    September 5, 2017 in Italy

Left Lake Garda and we are now spending a couple of days at beautiful Lake Como. The view from our apartment is quite breathtaking.

    Lake Como

    September 5, 2017 in Italy

We are staying in an apartment in Faggeto Lario, which is situated between Como and Bellagio on Lake Como. We have great views of Lake Como...and George Cluney's villa (so we are told). We may go exploring the region OR we may just sit here for two days and enjoy a beautiful part of the world.

    Bellagio Italy

    September 6, 2017 in Italy

Lunch at Bellagio (the village not the hotel!). Bellagio is located on the point jutting out where Lake Como branches off into two arms of the lake. Perfect weather here, about 26 degrees. Tomorrow we add another country to our trip - Switzerland. Lugano is our first stop.

    Domaso

    April 2 in Italy

    Lake Como, Italy

    August 24, 2017 in Italy

Lake Como has to be my favorite place in Italy, and most suited to my style of travel. I hadn't planned on coming here but Kimmy added it to our itinerary and I wish we could of stayed longer!! We stayed in the beautiful little village of Varenna in a dated apartment with lake views. It wasn't flash or fancy but it was just perfect for what we needed. I've been having trouble sleeping at night as Nana and Kim are both snorers so I've been a bit of a dragon with no sleep. We had two bedrooms here so I was given a room to myself and had two of the best sleeps in a while!! Lucky because I know how grumpy I get when I don't get enough sleep! It was really nice to get out of the hustle and bustle of the big cities and away from all of the tourists as Lake Como wasn't too busy and we were able to completely relax. We indulged in the most amazing beef fillets two nights in a row as well as more gelato and desserts. We also made the most of the relaxing time and had a full day at the lake where Nana dove head first in and proved herself to be the coolest 70 year old Nana in the world! I also had my first Aperol Spritz, a popular drink in Europe of orange, aperol and prosecco, and went on a morning run up to the Castle for a bit of exercise and time to myself. On this trip I've learnt how important it is for me to love myself, take time to be on my own and clear my head, and work on being the best possible version of myself. As we leave Italy for France, I value the food, culture and people in New Zealand so much more. We've experienced several rude and obnoxious Italians since being here and they're definitely something not worth remembering. It has become quite evident just how thoughtful and respectful us Kiwis are, and it's no surprise why we're loved overseas so much!Read more

    Day 201: Day Off

    September 3, 2017 in Italy

We'd built our itinerary for here on the assumption that we'd have one day off to just chill and do nothing. Now that we'd finished all the WHS stuff in the area that we wanted to do, it was time to relax and get some work done.

Lucky for us the sun came out, so the whole house was bathed in brilliant sunshine basically the entire day. Only issue was that we had no wifi, so it was 3G tethering to the rescue! Got a fair amount of planning done as well, since that had been neglected a bit by both of us while in Switzerland. Made all our bookings and reservations for northern Italy, all the way up to the end of our time in Venice on the 15th of September. After that we'll head to the far east of Italy around Trieste for a couple more WH sites, then across into Croatia or Slovenia for hopefully a mini beach break.Read more

Day 202: Sacri Monti & Bellagio

    September 4, 2017 in Italy

Time for some more exploring, on our last day in Como! We headed downstairs, drove back and through the town, then up the western shore of the lake. It's quite long, and very deep, but crucially there are no bridges spanning it - so the communities across the water only a kilometre or so apart are literally an hour's drive away.

Our first stop was the second Sacri Monti we wanted to visit, this time one at Ossuccio. It turned out to be a great stop, because here you had to park the car in a little village near the bottom of the hill, and then walk up as originally intended. It was quite a walk in the sunshine and heat - probably a kilometre or so of mainly steep uphill.

Every few hundred metres there was another chapel containing beautiful baroque statues of the life of Jesus, focusing mainly on the Passion (the last week before Crucifixion). Finally we reached the top, where we were rewarded with a fantastic view back across the lake in several directions. Quite a beautiful spot, and lovely that not many people were around to disturb it.

Back down we went, and continued our drive northwards along the western shore of the lake. We stopped at a highly rated place for lunch, where we ate Italian style and had a two-course meal of primi (pasta) and secondi (meat). We both chose for our secondi the plate of smoked lake fish and polenta (the latter is a speciality of northern Italy). It probably wasn't the wisest choice because after huge bowls of pasta, neither of us were particularly hungry! The fish was incredibly salty, almost painfully so, and the polenta wasn't smooth and creamy like I've had before. All in all, a bit disappointing.

Further north we drove, until we reached the ferry terminus opposite Bellagio, where we could get a ferry back to our side of the lake. Had to wait about 40 minutes for the boat, but it was still far quicker than driving around! Nice views from the ferry as well.

Bellagio is a beautiful little town, though almost entirely populated by tourists. Nice little alleyways with shops of the souvenir variety, and plenty of waterfront restaurants too. Once we'd found a park we wandered around a bit then grabbed a drink and a cake at one of the restaurants. Quite pricey, but that was expected. Lots of Australians around here as well, almost felt like we were back in Sydney at a few points!

Finally done, we hopped back in the car in the late afternoon and drove back south to our villa, sad to be leaving Como and the wonderful view, but definitely looking forward to having wifi again!
