      Day 9: Vercelli - rest day

      I've taken my first rest day, and as far as I'm concerned, it's was a day late. I walked five days last year on the VF and then took a rest day, which seemed a little wimpy, so I thought I would see how far I could go this time around before I needed a break and I've come to the conclusion that it's only six days of walking! Vercelli is a terrific place to stop for an extra day - it's a very attractive city. I didn't do a great deal of walking as it was raining, and I wasn't willing to share the Great Pumpkin with this world. It's May Day here, and I was treated to the town band in a square nearby, and the bell tower behind my accommodation tolled the most delightful tune this morning. I then popped into a church (Paul the Apostle) and sat through mass - there was the most beautiful singing; even a hymn I knew! After that, I visited a most beautiful church (Saint Bernardo and Santuaries of our Lady of the sick), the Basilica of Saint Andrea (the first Abbot is recorded at 1226!) and they appear to have a copy of the Magna Carta on display! My last church was the Cathedral of Saint Andrea. I gave up after that as the rain got too heavy.Leer más

      Day 8: Santhià to Vercelli

      The most positive thing I have to say about today is that the terrain was mostly flat and that the weather was terrific. The most appropriate word to use to describe the walk (27.9 km) would be monotonous. At one point, I abandoned the Way and took to the main road so that I could avoid rambling through yet more farmland - which shaved a good few km off the length of the walk (about 30 km). The farm houses along the way were of no structural interest, and you can only take so much of tilled earth fields or water soaked paddocks before you are over them. Funnily enough, I had toyed with the idea of taking the train from Santhià to Vercelli because of how spent I'd been the day before. I'm not saying I wish I had, as there were some real highlights to the day, but I am saying that if you were to take the train, you wouldn't be missing much. I met a really lovely couple in the village of San Germano Vercellese, and while we were chatting in the park, two pilgrims doing the VF in reverse came by. Their end point is Lausanne. Now for the highlights: unbelievably, the church was open this morning before 8 am! I was so glad I checked on my way out of town. Again, I had to help myself to light up the crypt (Saint Stefano), and it was worth seeing. The next two highlights happened when I was walking on the main road: I saw what I believe is a marmot as the tail was thin (I now know this to be a Coypu) swimming in the Naviglia di Ivrea, and I startled a snake in the grass on the roadside! It was about 1/2 a metre in length and may have been a barred grass snake, which is non venomous, but it set my heart pounding! No photos, I'm afraid.Leer más

      Notre hôtel au Lac Majeur

      Après une journée au Zoo nous arrivons dans un hôtel splendide au milieu de la campagne. Des chevaux nous entourent avec des moutons 🐑 et un zèbre qui réclame des câlins. Les enfants sont aux anges car 3 minis chiens sont dans l hôtel. (L un d entre eux est venu dans notre chambre )Leer más

      Ich bin im Zelt. Etwas eingewickelt in meinem Schlafsack auf dem Bauch liegend schreibe ich diesen Text. Der Spot für die erste Nacht ist gefuden, ich habe gegessen und meine Körper ist müde und bereit zum schlafen. 85km von Domodossola bis hierhin habe ich heute zurückgelegt. Ein guter Start, wenn man bedenkt, dass ich erst um 08.00 Uhr in Luzern los bin.

      Obwohl diese Reise bereits seit 4-5 Wochen geplant war, habe ich mich eher wenig darauf vorbereitet. "Was soll schon schieflaufen, ich hab ja noch alles vom Skandinavientrip" war mein Gedanke. Ganz unrecht hatte ich nicht, nebst ein par Kleinigkeiten waren die Ortliebtaschen mit einigen Handgriffen fertiggepackt und ready. Doch die Rechnung habe ich ohne den Packträger gemacht. Da mein neues Velo spezielle Scheibenbremsen hat, passte der alte Packträger von Zuhause nicht richtig und so konnte ich ihn nur provisorisch auf der einen Seite anmachen. Gut, dass es in Sesto Calendo noch einen Decathlon gibt, der sogar am Sonntag offen hat. Das Problem konnte dank der Hilfe zweier sehr netten und kompetenten Mitarbeiter gelöst werden.

      Auch die Zugfahrerei war etwas mühsam. Luzern - Bern ging problemlos. Doch der Zug von Bern nach Domodossola war so komplett überfüllt, dass ich grad knapp ein Platz für mein Velo fand. Naja, irgendwie hats geklappt und um 11.30 stieg ich in Domo aus dem Zug, die Gümelei kann losgehen.

      Die ersten par Kilometer folgte ich einer ausgeschilderten Veloroute. Ein Weg, welcher auf einer alten Bahnlinie extra für Velos gemacht wurde. Nur leider z.T. katastrophal ausgeschildert umd ziemlich über Stock und Stein..."welcome to Italy" dachte ich mir, nahm es gelassen und war dankbar, dass ich Gravelpneus habe.

      Ab Mergozzo gings auf der Strasse weiter. Ziemlich schnell und alles am Lago Maggiore entlang. Kurze Bekannschaft mit einem älteren Herr, der sich an mich ran machte und mein Windschatten geniesste. Vorbei an der Goldküste des Lago Maggiores mit riesigen Hotelanlagen und massenhaft Touristen in Baveno und Stresa. Über Arona bis hierhin.

      Nebst dem Packträger konnte ich mich im Decathlon noch mit ein zwei anderen Dingen eindecken, jetzt kanns definitiv losgehen.

      Zurück zum jetzt...ich liege auf dem Bauch im Zelt und ehrlich gesagt habe ich etwas Angst. Es ist mir unwohl und ich lausche jedes Geräusch während ich dies schreibe. Der Spot ist nicht optimal, nahe am Ticino Fluss und es gibt so viele Tiergeräusche. Vögel, Enten, Spechte die klopfen, Gänse. Ich glaube ich gehe ab jetzt lieber auf Campings, lets see.

      Ah ja da war noch was, ich liege direkt unter der Abflugschleuse des Flughafens von Milano🙄, diese Fluggeräusche sind echt nichr überhörbar...

      Sayonara Santorini, Goodbye Greece

      This was certainly our shortest European trip, but we had points to burn and a travel itch to scratch. I think it's the only overseas trip that hasn't involved a Chinese food fix! We did, however, grab some Italian food today. Our flight tomorrow is from Milan so today we flew Ryanair to Malpensa and caught the local train up to Arona to catch a glimpse of Lake Maggiore outside of winter.       Colosso di San Carlo

      Heute machen wir eine Rundfahrt um den Lago Maggiore. Erste Station: die Statue des Erzbischofs Carlo Borromeo. Dieser wurde nach seinem Tod heilig gesprochen und daher wurde im 17. Jahrhundert diese große Statue erbaut. Sie ist aus Kupferplatten zusammengenagelt und insgesamt 35 m hoch.
      Sie gehört damit mit der Freiheitsstatue zu den höchsten begehbaren Statuen der Welt.
      Wir hatten uns also vorgenommen im Inneren bis nach ganz oben zu gehen. Daran sind wir leider gescheitert. Das letzte Stück musste man in einer engen Röhre eine super steile Leiter mit rutschigen Stufen hochklettern. Das war uns einfach zu steil und zu eng, sodass wir zwischendurch wieder umgekehrt sind.
      Der Ausblick von der Mittelstation war trotzdem schon toll 😊      Leer más

      Ce soir c’est camping !

      Enfin, un agricampeggio. Nous en avions déjà fait un dans la banlieue de Vérone. Le principe : une exploitation agricole mettant à disposition des emplacements comme au camping, avec des services (sanitaires, douches, électricité, eau, possibilité de vidanger…). Tout ça pour…15€ la nuit ! Du luxe quand on voyage en van. Le propriétaire de l’agricampeggio dans lequel nous sommes ce soir est horticulteur, il propose dans sa boutique toute une variété de plants de fleurs et d’arbres. Comme par exemple, des citronniers (photo 1). Après une rapide promenade au bord du Lago Maggiore, place au premier barbecue du voyage !

      Et on termine cette journée avec un joli coucher de soleil, buona notte a tutti ! 🌅      Leer más

      Ob Mađoretu sva, sam ga (še) ne vidiva. 7 minut je kao peš do jezera. Še pride na vrsto. Kempič je ful (tabla tako govori), sam dejansko ni. Greva not, a ne delajo med 12:00 in 18:00. Kaj zdaj?

      Aha, piše,da pošlji svojo dolžino na vacap... Narejen...

      In nič. Parkirava na placu številka 17 in se razkomotiva. Jebiga. Bo že.

      Ha, in je. `Ok. Welcome. You can stay till 18.8.'

      Vroče je ful. Ostaneva noč ali dve. Odvisno od stanja po 7 minutah do plaže. Kajaka ziher ne bom vlačil dol 😬. Potem pa naprej na hladno v Zajčevo deželo. Kopiramo najlepše stvari (Colle de Nivolet).      Leer más

      Tranquille & majestueux lac d'Orta

      Ayé on est arrivé•e•s en Italie 🇮🇹🔥.

      Après avoir essuyé quelques galères dues au réseau routier un peu nébuleux ; on a finalement réussi à parvenir dans le Piémont ! (On ne prend pas l'autoroute, et les éviter n'est pas chose facile en Italie à priori 😅. Sachant que Turin est indiqué à chaque intersection dans à peu près toutes les directions possibles !)

      Paulo a réalisé son premier pain au levain (qui vit plutôt bien dans le van finalement ✌) ce matin 😋.

      Aujourd'hui, on a découvert le tranquille et majestueux lac d'Orta, ainsi que la ville d'Orta San Giulio et son Sacro Monte (le Mont Sacré) que l'on a gravi. Au milieu des hêtres et des pins, de nombreuses chapelles, des rotondes, un calme plat et le chant des oiseaux ; idyllique ! Le clou du spectacle : une vue plongeante sur le lac et l'île San Giulio.

      Nous avons évolué dans la ville un peu plus tard dans l'après-midi à l'heure de la sortie de l'école et des pauses "gelato" des élèves, on vous cache pas qu'on en a également profité 😇.

      Fun fact 👉 les italiens ont des conteneurs de tri spécifique pour les bouteilles d'huile d'olive, oui, oui !

      Pella am Ortasee

      Mit einer mittelguten Vorbereitung ging es nach einem Abschiedsapéro kurvig über den Simplon bis nach Gravellona Toce. Dort wurden die wichtigsten Lebensmittel für die folgenden Tage gekauft - Bier und Wein. 🍻 Der Castellania Camping in Pella überzeugte mit der freundlichen Besitzerin und der direkten Lage am Ortasee. Die kurzen Nächte konnte man so frühmorgens mit einem Sprung ins kühle Nass kompensieren. Ebenfalls konnte man mit dem Boot zum Örtchen Orta fahren um dort den ganzen Tag sich mit Apéritif zu beschäftigen.Leer más
