      Day 38, Mt. Fuji

      After two hours on the train, we approached Mt. Fuji. Seeing her in her splendor was breathtaking. (Surprisingly, I took this photo while sitting inside the train.) We were very fortunate because by afternoon she had disappeared, and tomorrow’s forecast is steady rain. We are staying in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese hotel, with matted floors and futon beds. Like many ryokans, ours has hot spring baths, separated by gender, where you go in with a only a tiny towel which you wear on top of your head. We also have a hot tub on our balcony, all supplied with volcanic waters. Dress code is a robe called a yukata. 👘 This afternoon we visited a museum featuring the art of Itchiku Kubota. Without a doubt, he created the most magnificent textiles I have ever seen (or even imagined). Fabric is tied in little balls and dyed over and over to give it 3D texture and vivid color. The fabric is then made into kimonos. His work is so renowned that he was the first living artist to be given his own exhibition at the Smithsonian. Besides his art, what I found so amazing is that he endured much hardship, including years after WWII in a Siberian prison camp. The resilience of the human spirit, and ability to create, is beyond measure.Baca selengkapnya

      Mount Fuji - part 1

      I think we learnt a very important lesson today... Japanese people eat very early... But more of that to come.

      We had an early ish start And went for breakfast which was Japanese style. Now whilst there was some tasty stuff on the platter as is evidenced by the photo, breakfast consisted of a mix of meso soup, green tea, rice, smoked fish and smother plant-based offerings. It wasn't disgusting but equally it wouldn't be my choice for breakfast in the future.

      After breakfast we walked to the train station to catch the one stop to Kowaguchiko. On arriving there we purchased a ticket which allowed us to hop on and hop off a number of buses in the area. We started by taking a bus to the end of the red line and seeing some amazing views of Mount Fuji along with lots of Taurus.

      Next we were back on to the red line service to take us to the ropeway which is the Japanese name for cable car. We queued for about an hour before we actually managed to take the trip up the mountain.

      At the top it was pretty busy and so we decided to walk up the hill further to see a shrine. To be honest it wasn't what we were expecting and so we returned back to the top level before getting a further cable car back down to the lake area.

      We caught another bus back to the town and found a bar for some food and a beer!      Baca selengkapnya

      Fujikawaguchiko

      Nach vielen Tagen in der Megastadt Tokio nahmen wir den Zug raus Richtung dem Highlight eines jeden Japanbesuchs. An den Fuß des berühmten Mount Fuji. Zunächst noch in Wolken gehüllt, zeigte er sich dann schnell mit seinem schneebedeckten Vulkankrater. Rund um die natürlichen Seen waren wir mit dem Fahrrad unterwegs und hatten wunderschöne Blicke auf den alleinstehenden Kegelvulkan. Übernachtet haben wir in einem traditionellen Hostel, in dem man sich sein "Bett" selber aufbaut.Baca selengkapnya

      Mt. Fuji

      Heute verliessen wir Kyoto zuerst mit dem Schnellzug, dann im Bus, weiter ins japanische Hochland – endlich weg von der lauten und lebendigen Stadt, was uns alle sehr erleichterte. Nachdem sich unser Guidr und ihre Schwester fast den Kopf einschlugen, fanden wir zum Glück noch das Hotel und genossen die Kühle. Danach trennten wir uns kurz, weil einige von uns noch mit dem Velo an den See fahren wollten – was sich mehr als gelohnt hat. Schliesslich konnten wir von dort aus den Sonnenuntergang geniessen. Der Abend wurde mit einem Hoto Fuodso abgerundet – einem Hot Pot, den die Japaner vor allem im Winter essen (oder wir Schweizer, weil wir bei hiesigen 23 Grad plötzlich doch fröstelten).Baca selengkapnya

      Fuji

      Dürfen wir vorstellen, Mount Fuji!
      Ist dieser Blick nicht fantastisch? 🏔️

      Zwei Tage haben wir hier am Mount Fuji verbracht. Er ist der höchste Berg Japans und steht so schon alleine da, weil er ein Vulkan ist.
      Bei unserer Ankunft war der Fuji noch in den Wolken verschwunden, so wie es wohl die letzten zwei Tage auch schon war. Aber das Wetter meint es gut mit uns und hat uns gleich am nächsten Tag einen wahnsinns Blick vom Hostel aus geboten.

      Als erstes haben wir eine Wanderung um den großen See gemacht. 4,5 Stunden hat das gedauert und es gab überall tolle Ecken von denen aus man den Fuji sehen konnte.
      Es ist so schön endlich richtig lange Unterwegs sein zu können, ohne das wir komplett durchgeschwitzt sind. In den anderen Ländern haben wir meistens schon kurz nach dem verlassen eines Gebäudes geschwitzt. Das ist toll, wenn man sich eh nur am Strand aufhalten möchte, aber groß wandern oder spazieren war meistens nicht machbar.
      Hier ziehen wir nun unsere Jacken im Minutentakt an und wieder aus 💁😅
      Aber schaut euch nur diese Herbstlandschaft an, 😍 die Bäume sind so kräftig rot, gelb und orange gefärbt, dass alles einfach nur bunt und toll aussieht. Genau so haben wir uns das für unseren Japan Aufenthalt gewünscht.

      Eigentlich wollten wir nur einen Tag wandern und am nächsten Tag gleich abreisen. Aber dann zog es uns doch nochmal dichter an den Vulkan. Nur zwei km näher ran.. und noch zwei.. am Ende waren es 8km bis wir einen tollen Park für Fotos gefunden haben.
      Zurück haben wir länger gebraucht als gedacht und stellten mit bereits schmerzenden Füßen fest, dass der nächste Bus schon weg ist. Der nächste fährt erst in 2h.
      In Japan kommt man ja eigentlich ganz schnell von A nach B aber das kostet auch. Wir brauchen mit der langsamen Verbindung 4h (exklusive Wartezeit davor und dazwischen) und am Ende müssen wir noch weitere 4km mit Rucksack bis zu unserem Hotel wandern. Hab ich schon gesagt wie froh ich bin das es nicht so heiß ist? 🫣😅
      Für die Fotos hat es sich aber allemal gelohnt so lange unterwegs zu sein. 😍      Baca selengkapnya

      Mount Fuji 🗻

      Na een vroege wekker gingen wij op pad om de bus 🚌 naar Kawaguchiko te pakken. Vanaf het nabij gelegen meer kun je namelijk prachtige uitzichten krijgen over Mount Fuji. Een slapende vulkaan 🌋 die als heilig wordt beschouwd in de Japanse cultuur. De kans is klein dat je hem in de zomer volledig kunt aanschouwen, maar zelfs die kleine kans is genoeg om ons te verleiden naar deze regio te trekken. De rit duurt twee uur en direct buiten Tokyo schieten we de bergen in.

      Aangekomen in Kawaguchiko huren we fietsjes 🚲 en gaan op weg door de prachtige landschappen langs het meer. Het is bloedheet en de lucht is helder maar we zien al gauw dat de enige wolken ☁️ van vandaag zich hebben verzameld rond Mount Fuji. Dat is jammer!

      Het mag de pret niet drukken want de omgeving is schitterend. We maken een mooie rit en na een welverdiend ijsje en een kabelbaan 🚡 later gaan we met de trein terug naar Tokyo. Als we kort onderweg zijn en nog eens omkijken zien we dat we vanaf de andere kant nog een kleine glimp van de top van Mount Fuji kunnen opvangen. Hebben we hem toch nog een beetje gezien! 😉      Baca selengkapnya

      Castle climbing and magnificent Mt Fuji

      What a marvellous day!
      This morning, we toured historic Matsumoto Castle and the charming old town area surrounding the castle. Matsumoto Castle, with its wide moat, is also known as ‘Crow Castle’ due to its dramatic black exterior. Not as big as Himeji Castle and while there is not a great deal to see inside these castles, the challenge it to climb to the top (because it's there! ). The steps in this Castle were steeper than Himeji and in some cases the treads were 45cm high (normal steps are 20-25cm). This, combined with the million school kids on excursion (ok, slight exaggeration - hundreds), really took me out of my comfort zone and I was glad when we arrived back to safety on the ground.

      We left Matsumoto for the three-hour journey to Mount Fuji, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As we arrived closer, our beautiful sunny day began to cloud over and we were worried we wouldn't see the peak. Making our way up to Mount Fuji 5th Station, about halfway up the mountain, at an elevation of 2,300 metres the clouds seemed to get thicker... we would be lucky to see anything. We arrived and almost miraculously the sun broke through and there she was...Spectacular!

      We stayed in a hotel in the Lake Kawaguchiko area, one of the Fuji Five Lakes; Every room faced over the lake with Mt Fuji as the backdrop. Can't wait to see the morning view.      Baca selengkapnya

      Fuji-san in den Wolken

      Den Tag auf verbracht mit der Suche nach Fuji-san, leider erfolglos aber dafür die Region rund um Tokyo ein wenig erkundet. 🏔🚍🍡

      Die Bezeichnung Fuji-yama ist ein Irrtum aus der Zeit der frühesten Kontakte des Westens mit Japan nach dessen Öffnung 1854. Das Schriftzeichen san (山) wird ebenfalls yama gelesen, doch in Zusammensetzung mit dem Bergnamen liest man es san.

      Mount Fuji

      Am Morgen komplett verregnet und dann 2h autofahrt richtung mount Fuji um Bilder zu machen.
      Dort haben wir die beste alte japanische Dame getroffen und 1h lang mit ihr geredet!

      Tokyo to Mount Fuji

      Another fitful night of sleep and winding if I'll ever shake off this jet lag.

      The weather this morning when we woke was wet and very windy... Very similar to what we might have expected at home. The promise though was off better weather in the afternoon.

      Given the weather we decided to have a chilled morning and a slightly later check out before walking from the hotel to Shinjuku station to catch a train to our destination for the next couple of days, Mount Fuji.

      Fortunately, by the time we started walking the rain had stopped, although it was still windy. At the station we bought some tickets for later in the trip and then headed up the platform to catch the train.

      The service was not a bullet train (that will wait for another day) but it was still absolutely on time and spotlessly clean.
      The journey to our first change was just under an hour and at Otuski we changed trains to get a local train to Mount Fuji. Fortunately the weather was better and by the time we arrived.

      We got off the train at an amusement park, complete with roller coasters although we declined to take part! We walked the short distance to our hotel and checked in.. The hotel is clean and tidy but very different to our previous one.

      We walked from the hotel to a viewing point (on top of a shopping centre) of mount Fuji. Next week walked to an area that was highlighted as having bars and restaurants. It would be in understanding to try that it was deserted... It felt very much like an out of season British seaside - nothing was open. So, we decided to walk back to the hotel for a beer before having dinner at the hotel.

      The hotel restaurant is a BBQ affair and we both managed to make a decent effort at cooking.

      Decided to have an early night tonight in the hope that sleep comes easily before a fun packed day in the Mount Fuji area!      Baca selengkapnya
