Changi Airport & Flying to Sydney

When we took off from Singapore Changi Airport, it was 9:10 Singapore time and 12:10am Sydney time. The pilot warmly welcomed us on board and mention this time difference and reminded us to turn our watches forward. When we got close to landing, he came back on the intercom system and admitted he made a mistake and that we were now only two hours difference as flew into Daylight Savings Time.... quite funny! Marina Bay Sands & Shoppes

After we checked out of the hotel at 11, we had to return our access to the Infinitely Pool. The hotel held our luggage while we explored the area. We took a Singapore River Cruise that was a little less than thrilling. Then we walked through the shops, including “Ferrari Junior” where the 50% discount rack had t-shirts for C starting at $169. Ha! Most places in the shops were Brand Names I couldn’t pronounce, let alone afford: Cartier, Louis Vuitton (who has their own FLOATING store connected), Jimmy Choo, Armani, just to name a few. This shopping mall was pretty crazy, it also had a man made River “flowing” through where you could catch a ride on a Venice style gondola. We ate some more Hainanese Chicken Rice at the food court, which of course wasn’t as good as the Michelin Star hawker ‘stall’ nor was it as cheap. We had Mango Tango Mango Ice for dessert. M was really keen to try these pay as you go motor scooters but we couldn’t download the apps so ultimately couldn’t ride. We wandered over to the Gardens By The Bay but just sat as it we were too tired to wander further. Knowing there was a rooftop pool and things to do a Changi Airport, we got to the airport about 5pm for our 9:10pm flight. It was quite cool to sit in the pool and have the planes take off around you. We grabbed some quick dinner and headed to the gate. Security that scans your bags is dedicated to each gate, this was a first for me.もっと詳しく

Infinity Pool

Iconic Sites

I worked a half day on Friday - it was sad to say “bye” or hopefully just a “see you later” to everyone I had spent almost all waking hours of the last three days with. Then I me up with a virtual friend from the States that is currently living in Singapore for her husband’s work. We had a quick peek at Chijmes, set of the wedding scene from the movie “Crazy Rich Asians”. Apparently the movie is a pretty accurate description of some people’s reality. Then we met M for drinks at the top of Marina Bay Sands. Such a great view. A storm came quickly rolling in and we had to move to the inside bar for a bit. I met M later for dinner where we had more amazing views. Once we finished dinner there was a light show harbour side. After that, of course, we visited the Infinity Pool.もっと詳しく

Black Pepper Crab

Though the Chilli Crab is iconic, recommendations are divided between it and the Black Pepper Crab. After a full day of work, we went to a restaurant on the marina, Palm Beach Seafood, together for dinner for the last night together. The crabs were huge!!! 2 kilos each - almost 4.5 pounds each. Hainanese Chicken Rice & Singapore Sling

At work we experienced some Japanese culture including balloon making and lunch. I can now make a balloon dog or giraffe by the way. After work, I met M for dinner on Smith Street which is where the heart of Chinatown is. We made our way to one of the two hawker stalls that was awarded the Michelin Star. This was also our cheapest meal in Singapore - the iconic Chicken Rice. Traditionally the chicken is poached but we had heard it was better roasted so we went with that option. It was pretty delicious. We met a guy called Peter who sat at our table, an American guy who recently graduated college and was traveling alone for a Vietnamese wedding. Once we finished eating, we invited him to walk the street with us for dessert and looking in the shops. We had sweet corn traditional ice cream (who knows?) that actually was made from sweet corn. I know because there were the clear plastic-y bits of the corn that get stuck in your teeth in it. We stopped to check out another hawker centre and took the opportunity to try a durian smoothie. Durian is a fruit. Google a picture. It’s actually banned from some places because of its terrible, strong odor. It tastes nearly as weird but was a must try. Shortly after we parted way with our need friend and met one of my work mates at Long Bar, the originator of the Singapore Sling. The Singapore Sling is a gin cocktail that was created to give women something to drink prior to 1915. It was pretty tasty, but not $32 SGD worth, but I’m glad for the experience. You are allowed to throw your peanut shells on the floor and the free peanuts were bottomless which helped make up the outrageous price of the drink. I left my personal phone behind and had to go back to the bar with my fingers crossed it was still there. They made me unlock the phone in front of them to prove it was mine, I really appreciated this! Singapore is considered a “fine” country because you have to pay a fine for just about any wrong doing, including chewing gum which is illegal. Singaporeans like to play by the rules and I enjoy this.もっと詳しく

Satay By The Bay

For dinner at the Gardens, we ate at the hawker center called Satay By The Bay. It’s basically food stalls (and it’s supposed to be cheaper). I ate Stingray, pork belly satay, clams made the local way, Roti, and a Chinese “salad” that I can’t remember the name of. There was also this deliciousness that they called carrot cake that tasted nothing like carrots (thank goodness!) but rather and omelette type thing that was soft and tasty.もっと詳しく

Gardens By The Bay

My first day of work and meeting my Asia Pacific (APAC) team for the first time! I have two teammates from China, two from Japan, one from India, and my manager is based in Singapore. We had some cultural experiences in the office including leaning about Dangal, a wrestling like sport in India and women ‘fighting’ for their right to participate. We also made traditional Indian Rangoli and art of decorating with colored powder. We did a little work in the morning but spent most of the day team building at Gardens By The Bay, an icon of Singapore. At Gardens By The Bay, there is a Flower Dome with flowers from many countries including Sakura (Japanese Cherry Blossom). There is also the Cloud Forest where the tallest indoor waterfall is. There is the Supertree Grove with large metal trees scaled with plants that light up at night connected by the SkyWalk. Plus there are many other Gardens for China, India, Cactus, etc.もっと詳しく

3 Zoos Pt 3

At 3:29 it started to rain and the 3:30 Orangutan feeding was cancelled. Then it started to pour and it became a heat storm full of lighting and thunder. There was a man and a woman I met when watching the chimpanzees earlier who met while traveling and are now just travel buddies who only meet up when they don’t have someone to travel with. We were all disappointed about the storm but we sat and talked for the hour while it stormed until they left the zoo and I went to meet M for the River Safari. The River Safari was a separate entrance that took you through different species of different rivers around the world, plus pandas, though one was hiding. We also got a boat ride on the reservoir and I saw the “Maned Wolf”, an animal I didn’t know existed which is stunning! We wrapped up the night at the Night Safari. The Night Safari was yet another zoo which opened from 7:15pm to 12am only. Of course this zoo showcased nocturnal animals. We saw the Fishing Cat in action, a sloth bear that wanted to eat us, bats, a white lion and Asian lions, Asian elephants, leopards, pangolin, and some others I never heard of. The zoo was really awesome though and felt like we were really in the wild and could actually see the animals in action.もっと詳しく

3 Zoos Pt 1

Even though it was scheduled as my “travel to Singapore” day, it was Monday and M had to work. He also wasn’t as excited about going to the Zoo so I took the opportunity to go alone. As soon as I got to the zoo I hurried to the elephants. For $5 SGD you could feed an Asian Elephant. The one I got to feed carrots and bananas to was less interested in bonding with me or getting a pat but more interested in not having lag time between bananas. Still an awesome experience and even better when the $5 goes to animal conservation. Also pictured here is the “Eco-Link” which is basically a bridge for wildlife.
