Dinner on a Boat ride and city sunset

    May 21, 2018 in Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Thx to our host - the idea was executed to have our dinner on a boat ride. Asia flexibility let us book very easily, just on the pier.

The punctual everyday thunderstorm- already hanging tight in the clouds, waiting to crush on us, was left behind by the fast ship moving off city.

Gorgeous experience and reminded me of Thuy in viet who invited me for birthday last year.

Arrival - we went to backpacker district and enjoyed a wonderful whiskey in the drunken monkey bar, ending a enormous cool day.

Sunday is a day of rest

    October 7, 2018 in Malaysia ⋅ 🌧 81 °F

Well, the Borneo Hash House Hazards-Riettes (BHHHR) certainly do know how to throw a On After. Trail was very good, in the jungle with ups and downs that weren't so steep that you had to crawl up or slide down. Lots of flat bits, too. About 1.5 hours for 6 km. Nice. After a very short circle at finish, we cleaned up and went to a nearby restaurant that is often used by the many hash kennels here in Kuching. Good food and great laughs. The Whip, elsewhere called the Religious Advisor, continued with the down downs, and the hash gave me a sarong and a t-shirt. They are awesome people!

As typical, I woke up around 3 am but managed to get back to sleep until around 6. I've walked down the street to the nearest KFC because they have the bowls (chicken strips, mashed potatoes, corn, and cheese). Yummy! They also have chicken and waffles served as a sandwich. I kind of want to get one just to try it (see pic).

Although I really should walk around more today, I'm pretty sure I'm going back to bed for a movie and a nap, not necessarily in that order. 😉

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

Day 46: Last day in Kuching

    July 31, 2016 in Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

As per the title, today was our last day in Kuching. We've been in the area for 8 days now, far longer than we ever expected I think! We celebrated with a sleep-in, which saw me struggling downstairs for "breakfast" at 10:30am. Bumped into Keith and Maria while I was down there and organised to do dinner again tonight.

After breakfast we headed out briefly in the morning with no real plans; we had a coffee and cake in a nice looking cafe at the colonial-era courthouse building which we'd seen earlier in the week and meant to come back to. And of course Keith and Maria were there finishing their coffee! This town ain't big enough for the four of us.

Almost immediately afterwards we decided it was lunchtime (it was midday at this point), so we found a cheap Chinese food court where we loaded up on bowls of noodles again for a ridiculously cheap price (two bowls of noodles, a soup and two drinks was about $5 AUD). Shandos convinced me to re-visit H&M in the nearby mall where she looked at hats, but nothing particularly took her fancy.

Wandered back to the hotel where we spent the rest of the afternoon in the common areas on laptops, browsing the internet, doing various things and spending some time on Skype with parents. Headed out around 6pm for a sundowner beverage at a nearby pub and had a couple of beers before rushing back to the hotel to meet Keith & Maria for dinner.

Tonight's venue was TopSpot Food Court - a huge outdoor food court on top of a parking garage (!!) which is basically a fish market. You pick your seafood, tell them how you want it cooked and they bring it over. Malaysian prices of course, and since we'd so far had a very cheap day we splurged on a lobster (grilled in black pepper sauce), half a kilo of king prawns grilled in garlic butter, a plate of stir fried Bornean ferns in chilli sauce and two serves of steamed rice. All up - 125 ringgits which is about $40 AUD. I don't think you'd get half a kilo of king prawns for that price in Australia, let alone cooked and with a fresh lobster and sides! I just can't get over the price differences.

Not much to report after this, we left the food court and stocked up on cash for our next leg, Gunung Mulu National Park.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

    October 7, 2018 in Malaysia ⋅ 🌧 82 °F

Several people have asked me about my sign off phrase, "So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish." It's from Douglas Adams's book "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy," which turns 40 next year. The 2005 movie was a terrific adaptation with Alan Rickman (Professor Snape) as the depressed robot.

In the meantime, watch this: ✌️

    Kuching - Borneo

    May 12, 2017 in Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Aber dennoch: life is beautiful!

Freitag morgen: Elan!!!! Tatendrang!!!!

    Orang utan Rehabilitationszentrum
Kino: Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Alien Covenant,

    Brunei? Miri? Kota dingenskirchen...
