      Amsterdam 1.0

      18 Juni 2023, Belanda ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

      Day 2 - Canal Ride

      13 Mei 2023, Belanda ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Did the standard city bus tour which is ok but I'm not a huge fan. Fortunately , thanks to Google maps, I had downloaded an offline map of Amsterdam. Then I can pull it up anytime I want and see from the GPS exactly where the bus is en route and what direction it is moving. Helps to orient oneself. I can guarantee you most people would be clueless where they were. Personally I'd rather walk the city. If you know where you're going, you can plot the route on the map while still on wifi. Then just follow the little gps beacon as you walk. If you decide to alter the route, just jump on cellular for long enough for it to map the route, then put it back on airplane mode to avoid cellular charges. I also use iCloud for my photos so be sure to go into Settings/Photos/cellular Data and turn off uploading of photos while on cellular. That will stop it from auto uploading your photos if you happen to jump on cellular for a bit. So many things to remember!

After the city bus tour , we jumped on a canal boat for an hour+ tour of the canals with narration. Nice sunny day. Wear sunscreen - dang it was hot on that boat. Lots of cool houses along the banks and houseboats.(for an explanation of all the gabled houses you see in Amsterdam, here is an excellent site -http://www.amsterdamforvisitors.com/canal-house…) Living on a houseboat isn't cheap and they allow only so many and you have to have a permit, so if you want to do that, you'd have to get someone to sell you their permit and those can cost you all the way up to a million bucks - whew. Getting a parking permit for your car in Amsterdam can take you 8-10 years and you only get a permit for your neighborhood and you might need to circle the block for 20 minutes till you find a spot. No wonder everyone is on a bike! (Amsterdam is a great place if you have suicidal tendencies - just step off a curb without looking!).

      Day 2 Amsterdam

      13 Mei 2023, Belanda ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Was nice to finally get some sleep! Still not enough but after another one of these great European hotel breakfasts , we are beginning to feel human again! Scrambled eggs, tasty little sausages, good cheeses, nice greens for a nice side salad. Humongous pear to finish it off. Some good plain yogurt with ginger/coconut granola sprinkled on top, multiple coffees.

Off for a bus city tour this morning at 9 and then we'll be jumping on a boat to explore the canals, followed by a food tour. That should finish us off.! Our tour director Bart is a former native of Amsterdam so that will be nice. He led tours for Europeans throughout the US for some 10 years , which explains why when we mentioned Winston- Salem, he said - ah tobacco - Reynolds family. That was a bit shocking to hear.

Saw this portable wifi machine in the lobby of the hotel today. Kind of handy if you don't have a plan. https://www.hubbywifi.com

      Old Haunts

      26 September 2023, Belanda ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Waiting for the Americans to arrive from their various cities across the US, we (or should I say I) took the opportunity to revisit some old haunts. After walking through the tourist area of Rembrandtplein; (the famous painter who lived in Amsterdam and who's house is now a museum), with its many bars, cafes, restaurants, hotels and of course the modern sculpture of the Thinker. After stopping off at the Flower Market; famous for its tulips🌷 (from Amsterdam 🎼) and clogs in all sizes for the tourists, we walked down Leidsegracht crossing 3 of the main canals in Amsterdam. We stopped off at Leidsekade, where the hotel I stayed in when working at the airport is (no longer) there. Just 8 minutes later , we walked to our 1st destination, Cafe Helmers, on Eerste Helmersstraat, which was our (British Aircraft contractors at KLM) local bar when not working 🍻🍻🍻🍺. Physically, the shape of the bar had not changed much but visually quite a bit in the 38 years since I frequented it. So after stopping for the obligatory beer 🍺 (well, it would be rude not to and I was on a reminiscing trip). Shortly after, we left to walk 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️ to another important destination.
Vondel Park, where in the summer bands 🎸🎶🎷 would play, people would walk🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️, cycle 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️, run 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️, and sunbathe 😎😎. It is also the place where I knelt down to tie my shoe lace, I heard "YES" and ended up proposing 💍 to Jayne on a long weekend visit back in the late 80s 🤣🤣🤣

      Rembrandtplein

      28 Juli 2022, Belanda ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Rembrandtplein.

      9 Oktober 2022, Belanda ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Settled into our Air BnB, which is an old peat boat, that is now a home. (here is the listing, with puctures: https://abnb.me/dpvdOtwK3tb) They line the canals. Fortunately Lex our host let us in early where we both took a long nap and then headed out for an evening Grand Canal Tour on a converted old wooden yacht. Jan, our captain and tour guide was a delight and very informative.Baca selengkapnya

      Discovering Amsterdam

      8 November 2022, Belanda ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Today the weather is supposed to be dry all day with a fair amount of sun. So we decided we would spend the day seeing some of the sites of the city and just wandering at our own pace. We started a bit later today as Brigitte is fighting off a bit of a cold.

As we were having our breakfast we were entertained by a couple taking a plunge in the freezing water and then taking a sauna. We then noticed a number of other people taking a dip in the freezing water, swimming about for a while but no sauna.

We headed off to the city centre on a self guided tour to check out the sites and just meandered around the streets, discovering picturesque little canals, old houses and interesting architecture and stores. It was nice to have a vague plan but one we could reroute if something took our fancy.

I had spied a lot of “coffee shops” and places to buy hash but resisted all temptation. I saw a lovely cafe off the beaten track that looked like it was popular with the locals so we went there for lunch and we weren’t disappointed. The owner was lovely (quite handsome and I think Brigitte took a bit of a fancy to him! ) The staff were all great and the food, wine and coffee delicious. We spent a couple of hours there recharging our batteries. After lunch we headed to the Bloemenmark to check out all the beautiful flowers. The biggest seller at the moment were tulip bulbs - I haven’t seen so many in such quantities, colours and types and very reasonably priced. Brigitte was able to purchase 50 bulbs for 15 Euros.

We also visited Rembrandt square, Munt Plein, a square in the middle of Amsterdam, which in fact is the widest bridge in Amsterdam. We also walked past the royal palace, which was very heavily guarded as there was some type of function or reception about to start. We also went to the Dam and visited a couple of stunning covered passageways. We of course saw many canals as they are everywhere and hard to miss and we walked through some upmarket shopping districts.

What surprised us as we walked around the city was the unruliness of the bike riders, of which there are many. No-one stops for pedestrians and the cyclists ride so fast, don’t wear helmets, hardly ring bells to warn they are approaching, don’t follow traffic signals ( we saw several cut off trams, busses and cars without hesitating), ride on the few footpaths that exist and ride so very fast. I was to be advised later that bicyclists are the top of the food chain in Amsterdam, followed by trams and busses, the vans and cars and last are pedestrians.

After a full day of hitting the pavement and clocking up over 15,000 steps we headed back to our hotel to have dinner. It was on this evening that I met Rufus, the hotel manager’s whippet who was an absolute delight.

Canal Cruise, Dutch Pancakes & A Queen

      7 April 2023, Belanda ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

For our last full day in Amsterdam, we worked on checking off the last of our touristy things to do. Mike and Teresa took us to one of their favorite Dutch pancake cafes. They come sweet and savory, so we tried each!

Next, we took a small, open-air canal boat tour. The skipper was from Amsterdam and the mate was a university student from Spain studying at the Free School in Amsterdam (doesn’t mean free tuition). They both shared a lot of information about the old city and the canals. For example: Amsterdam has around 1.4 million bikes, which amounts to about 1.6 bikes per person; every year, 15,000 bikes are pulled out of the canals (and a number of cars too); some of the large canal houses sell for close to 40 million Euros (!).

Later, the two of us walked to Dam Square, which dates back to the earliest days of the city’s founding (13th century). Located at the square is the Royal Palace (closed to visitors this week) and the Nieuwe Kerk (new church—15th century). The church is now a museum, which is presenting an exhibit about Queen Juliana, who reigned from 1948–80. That is probably not a typical touristy thing to do, but we learned a lot about this very progressive and down-to-earth Dutch ruler, who is the grandmother of the current king—Willem-Alexander.

Finally, we had a special dinner at The Secret Garden, the site of the former Rosa’s Kitchen, where Mike was a cook in the 1980s. The restaurant features Peruvian-Japanese small plate dishes, which were beautifully presented!

      Häuser entlang der Grachten

      10 April 2019, Belanda ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Baca selengkapnya
