Alesund - Land of the Trolls

    September 6, 2017 in Norway

Off the boat all day today on a tour which took in Borgundfjord, the valley of Validal, the powerful Gudbrandsjuvet Gorge and then down the 11 hairpin bends of ' Trolls Path - the Trollstigen mountain road. We also saw the waterfall at Stigrora and the Trolls Wall (3280 feet vertical mountain face) at Andalsnes.
The weather could have been kinder at the start but the rain stopped and we had dry coach stops until the final one where the Wall was lost to low level cloud. Overall, a great day out.
We were back on board for another delicious dinner and ended the day watching another show from the entertainment team who range from very good to room for improvement!

    Alesund Norway

    July 26, 2017 in Norway

    Hi Family

We have had two incredible days in the fjords. Yesterday we arrived in Flam early in the morning where there was a spectacular cloud hanging around the cliffs of the fjord. After brekkie on the deck we set off for a big day climbing up one of the steepest roads in Norway up numerous hair pin bends in a bus. Amazingly the sun kept breaking through. The scenery as we looked back to the Aurlands fjord was out of this world. There were neat little farms and patches of snow on the mountain tops , numerous waterfalls and fast flowing rivers tumbling over rocks. Pools as clear as a bell . We often had to pass other buses on single lane roads very scary!!! We had lunch in a majestic old hotel and walked up onto the grass roof of the culture centre for a fabulous view down the valley. Then we went on two trains . The last one stopped at Kjosfossen waterfall right beside the track where the spray covered us. Hilariously a lady dressed in red popped out the vegetation beside the waterfall and danced to some haunting music. Bizarre. The ride back down to the ship was so lovely. After our return we had cocktails and caviar as the ship sailed slowly through the fjord. We had the urge to burst into song but controlled ourselves. Certainly it was one of those moments we will never forget and probably the best day so far .Now we are in another fjord at a town called Alesund which has art nouveau architecture . We went to the high point above the town and looking down was quite amazing. It was sunny while we were out and surprisingly the last few days have been the warmest of our trip so far. We don't leave here until 11.30 as we don't have far to go tonight so we plan to eat up on the deck by the pool. My back has been so terrible that I decided to try a short course of Bette's prednisone and after one day it is better than it has been in 5 weeks. Not sure what will happen when I stop. Bette's right knee is playing up and she will have to have that investigated on our return. We trust Lucy and Josh got away and that Ruby had a wonderful birthday with her school mates. Can't believe you are 6 !!! Miss you all all of love ❤️

    Alesund, Norway

    June 22 in Norway

Ålesund is known as the Venice of Norway. Our tour gave us a view of ancient and modern Alesund. After a major fire in 1904, the city was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau period.
We traveled to the city mountain of Mt. Aksla where we had incredible views of the archipelago, town center and Sunnmore Alps.
Along the way we saw ladders on the roofs of homes leading to the chimney. Heat is critical in Norway so chimney sweeps need access for maintenance.Read more

    Alesund, Norway

    August 8 in Norway

FINALLY A DAY OFF TOGETHER!!!!! Jackson always starts work at 8am or 9am so we slept in, getting off the ship around 11. We wandered down the harbour front. Finding a Tandoori restaurant called Tajmahal but it didn’t open until 1pm. So up the big mountain we went, 418 steps to the top. We stopped for a quick break just over halfway and met up with the deputy captain and his family. At the top I offered to take a picture of them so he returned the favour and his adorable kids photobombed us. We ran into Chris (manager) and James (ex-manager/current communications manager) when we were just about to head back down. Chris decided it would be fun to show me they walked up not took the train by chasing me trying to wipe his sweaty forehead on me.
When we made it back to the bottom we still had a bit of time before the restaurant opened so we wandered around some shops. It eventually opened and we both enjoyed our meals (butter chicken & chicken tikka masala) but Jackson wished his was a bit spicer.

    Ålesund

    September 3 in Norway

    First Port : Alesund

    January 5 in Norway

This morning we hit open sea and as there was a big swell a few people were not very well. The cruise along the Norwegian Coast is different to a River Cruise, not much greenery, vineyards or old houses, just scenic icy mountains. After lunch we docked in Alesund where we walked around for a while as we only docked for a few hours before heading back to the ship. Once back on ship there was a tasting of cured meat (a local delicacy) on the top deck. This was followed by a short documentary film about the Northern Lights. Fingers are still crossed that we see them in the next few days. As I write this we are just having a glass of wine while we wait for our dinner seating.Read more

    Alesund - sunshine at last

    July 13, 2017 in Norway

    Snapshot
    Where - Alesund, Norway
    Weather - cloudy then sunny - 19°C
    Steps - 14,500 or 9.25km

Finally Norway manages to produce a nice day without the liquid sunshine they say is typical of Norwegian weather. No shore excursions organised so we took the HOHO bus to see the sights. Great view from the lookout - this really is a pretty town, very colourful. Apparently the main city centre had to be rebuilt in the early 1900's after it was destroyed by fire which is why all the homes have a similar architecture. We walked down the 420 odd steps from the lookout to the town centre.

Later we visited an open air museum which was like a village from the 14th century. I reckon everyone must have been below 5 foot or else they constantly had bad headaches from hitting their heads, the ceiling heights were so low.

    Next stop - Trondheim

    August 27, 2017 in Norway

Dr Tag het hüt unfreiwiuig miteme Früehligsputz vo paar Chistä aagfange. Mir hei z' Wätter ir Nacht nid richtig erchennt u drum am Morgä zersch mau müesse d' Chistene tröchnä u putze. Tja, o das muess mau si...
Speter simr losgfahre nach Trondheim. Ungerwegs heimr d' Tipps vomnä St. Galler-Paar, womer am Aabä vorhär hei troffä, bsuecht: ds Lundhags-Outlet (Outdoor-Chleider) u dr Ristafallet-Wasserfau. Dr Wäg nach Trondheim isch wunderhübsch, füehrt dür chlini Dörfli, ruhigi Wälder u ah schönä Gwässer vrbi. Zimlech am Aafang heimr no ufne chliini Fährä müesse, wo üs ufnä Inslä het bracht u änä widr drab.
Widr dunger simr no ga dr Dom luege. Womer ume Eggä si cho, heimr gstuunet: ar Fassade si 60 grossi Figure vo (mir nämä ah) Heiligä, gschichtsträchtigä Mönschä u vo Jesus gsi. Äs mega Kunstwärk! Gässä heimr imnä Auerwäutsrestaurant, "Egon" hets gheisse u gspisä heimr vom Pizza- u Salatbuffet.
Speter simr no so wit gfahre wiemer hei mögä u wie d' Zit het zuegla u so simr z' Ellingsgården ufeme Camping glandet. Dsch sonä Raststättcamping gsi u dämentsprächend heimr scho gli mau nach Pommes u Öu gschmöckt. Drfür heimr z' erstä Mau Elektrizitä gha u dadrmit dr Alj chönnä heizä u d' Liechterchötti lah lüchtä.
Am nächschtä Tag simr uf Ålesund gfahre. Uf däm Wäg heimr 2 Fährä müessä näh. Rächt lustig, ds isch eifach dr normau Strasseverlouf. Ufdr eintä Fährä hetsech ä euteri Damä mit ihrere Tür no ah üse Alj verewigt u speter no mit dr Ungerschrift unger ihrem Wärk. Lustegi Begägnig gsi!
Am speterä Nami simr ufeme Camping aacho u hei gwöschet, Alj putzt u Znacht kochet. Äs het Couscous mit Fischstäbli gäh.
Hüt simr gah z' Aquarium vo Ålesund bsueche. Äs härzigs Schmuckstückli wo Iiblick git it Ungerwasserwäut vor norwegischä Küstä u dä norwegischä Fjorden.

    Ålesund

    July 27, 2014 in Norway
