      Mauer

      Der Vormittag war definitiv etwas bedrückend. Ich stand noch nie neben einer so hohen Mauer, die Menschen so hart trennt.
      Schon nachdenklich stimmend, wenn man die ganzen Geschichten ließt, das Graffiti sieht und von jemandem seine Sicht der Dinge hört.
      Und dennoch denken wir, ist es sehr wichtig, sich ein paar Sichtweisen zu dem Konflikt anzuhören um sich ein möglichst vielschichtiges Bild zu machen.      Les mer

      Geburts - und St. Katharina Kirche

      Den Nachmittag haben wir dann genutzt um die Geburtskirche zu besichtigen. Sie muss mit dem kompletten Mosaik einmal wirklich schön gewesen sein. Erbaut wurde sie von Kaiser Konstantin 335 nChr, im 5 Jhd nochmal komplett neu erbaut (Brand oder Erdebeben) und zählt damit zu den wenigen Beispielen komplett erhaltener frühchristlicher Kirchenbauten. Heute stehen die Menschen Schlange um den Stein in einer Grotte unter der Kirche zu berühren, wo angeblich Jesu geboren wurde.(Bild 1-6)
      Gleich an die Geburtskirche anschließend wurde 1347 ein Schrein der Heiligen Katharina geweiht, der Jesu hier erschienen sein soll und ihr Martyrium vorhersagte. Durch den Kaiser von Österreich wurde aus dem Schrein 1882 die heutige Kirche, die alljährlich Austragungsort für die weltweit ausgestrahlte Weihnachtsmesse ist. Unter der Höhle befinden sich drei große Räume die als Schreine und Gräber dienten, heute werden dort Messen gehalten.(Bild 6-9)      Les mer

      Jericho

      Die tiefstgelegene Stadt der Welt - ca 250 Meter unter dem Meeresspiegel.
      Außerdem liegen die ersten Besiedelungen in dem Gebiet hier 10 000 Jahre zurück.
      Ihren Spitznamen "Palmenstadt" können wir nach dem Spaziergang am Nachmittag definitiv bestätigen, hier werden viele Dattelnpalmen gepflegt sowie Bananenbäume geerntet.
      Die Luft hier ist etwas schwerer haben wir das Gefühl und wie man das hier im Sommer bei 40°C aushalten soll, weiß ich nicht so genau.      Les mer

      Wadi Quelt

      Die leider dreckigste Stadt, die wir bisher gesehen haben, haben wir heute hinter uns gelassen und sind den Flusslauf des Wadi Quelts hinaufgelaufen.
      Eine absolut ruhige Schlucht, derzeit karges Sandgestein, nur das Qitschern von kleinen schimmernd schwarzen Vögel und ab und zu Krähen - einfach schön.
      Den Hinweg haben wir auf einem Aquädukt gemeistert - Maps.me ( beste App der Welt ♥️)hatte uns den falschen Weg angezeigt, aber eigentlich den besseren, da er mehr im Schatten lag. Die ersten Aquädukte gab es hier schon in der Zeit der Hasmonäer im 2. Jhd vChr. . Herodes ließ die Systeme dann ausbauen und auch die Briten haben noch einmal Hand angelegt und die Aquädukte modernisiert. Noch heute läuft hier Wasser von Jerusalem nach Jericho und versorgt das Tal mit frischem Wasser. Jedes Jahr muss es dazu aber in langwieriger Handarbeit von Schlamm und Geröll befreit werden. Das machen die Jungs, die wir auf dem Weg nach oben getroffen haben.

      Unser Ziel war das Kloster St. Georg. Erbaut Ende des 5. Jhd. von Johannes von Theben, wurde das Kloster der Theotokos (griechisch für die Mutter Gottes) geweiht, 614 nChr wurde es von den Persern zerstört und danach vergessen, um 1170 herum wollten die Kreuzfahrer es wieder herrichten, jedoch ohne Erfolg und es verfiel wieder, erst 1878 bis 1901 wurde es von griechischen Mönchen wieder errichtet und seitdem leben griechisch-orthodoxe Mönche dort. Es ist wirklich beeindruckend, wenn man nach dem langen Marsch durch diese verschlungene Schlucht um die Kurve kommt und ein Kloster sieht, was sich an die steile Felswand schmiegt und direkt am Abhang, umgeben ist von bunten Blumen und Bäumen und singenden Vögeln. Ein wirklich besonderer Ort.      Les mer

      The Seperation Wall

      Did you know that there is a Separation Wall running around the whole of Bethlehem? I certainly didn’t!

      Bethlehem is classified as a city that’s land belongs to Palestine, but civil services are run by Israel. Unfortunately a lot of these services either don’t run or aren’t prioritised. The Separation Wall was built during the Second Intifada, a period of heightened conflict between Israel and Palestine that occurred between 2000 and 2005. Construction began on the wall in 2002, cited as a security measure to prevent suicide bombers from entering Israel from the West Bank.

      When entering or leaving the city, the Wall almost looks like a scar, it is heartbreaking to see. We have had lots of conversations about it today, maybe it will become our (or a future generations) Berlin Wall. Only time will tell.      Les mer

      Nativity Church

      Our final stop today was the Church of the Nativity. As it turns out, at times, groups can wait 3-4hrs to get into the small grotto, it took us maybe 15mins. Inside the Grotto there is a silver 14 point star that is the actual place that Jesus Christ was born, on the left was a shrine for the manger. I actually became quite emotional while in the grotto, it did make tear up. It was incredible to see children and adults, of all faiths coming to witness such a place.Les mer

      Bethlehem University

      Bethlehem University is an oasis of peace amongst unrest. I didn’t expect today’s visit to the campus to be as emotional as it did.

      We started by going into the campus chapel, which is dedicated to Jesus as a child, the only one of its kind in the Holy Land. Our tour guide took us into a room where we met with the Vice Chancellor, Brother Peter Bray, who is a De La Salle Brother from New Zealand. Peter has been the Vice Chancellor for 15 years and his passion for education and young people was so strong. He told us all about the university and some of its history, including the 12 times it has been closed due to conflict or war.

      We were then introduced to five young ambassadors. Four of them travel each day to campus from Jerusalem. Because Jerusalem is in Israel and Bethlehem is in Palestine, you have to cross the checkpoint to get into Bethlehem.

      These checkpoints can be very daunting and a scary task for the students. At the checkpoints they can be checked for ID, their car searched and they themselves can even be subject to strip searches.
      These searches are all random and dependent on the mood of the checkpoint guards. Sometimes the checkpoints can even be closed, which means students cannot get to campus.

      One of the students was born in Palestine, which means she holds a green coloured ID. This means she cannot enter Israel/Jerusalem. To travel internationally she cannot cross the boarder and use the Tel Aviv, she has to travel to Jordan and fly from here.

      Hearing the students talk about their experiences was absolutely heartbreaking, and it just makes you realise how very lucky each of us are to not just attend university, but do you so safely, and without fear.

      At the end, we had a small question and answer time and I asked the student ambassadors if “they had a message they would like us to tell students or people back in Australia, what would it be?”.

      Their simple answer:
      Share what you have heard here today, tell people about their story, and maybe most powerfully, never take your freedom for granted.      Les mer

      Palm Sunday Road

      Today we walked down the Mount of Olives and the Palm Sunday Road. We stopped half way and celebrated Mass at the Dominus Flevit. As you can see, there is a stunning view of Jerusalem behind the alter. When Jesus walked down this road with the crowd, he would have seen the incredible Temple in front of him, not the golden dome.

      At the bottom of the Mount, we stopped at the Garden of Gethsemane. This is where Jesus is said to have prayed before his arrest and where Judas betrayed him.      Les mer

      Stations of the Cross

      We started this morning at 5:30am. It was incredible so the Stations around the Old City and end at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. This Church is on the hill of Calvary, where Jesus was crucified. We climbed to the top and got to touch the bedrock and were even more lucky to celebrate a (quick) Mass in the actual Tomb of Jesus.

      During peak tourist time, there can be 4 hour lines to even just walk through this Tomb, so we were very lucky!

      Getting to finish the Stations here was incredibly moving. To follow, quite literally, Jesus’ footsteps was emotionally for many.      Les mer

      How Bazaar

      The tunnel from the Western Gate took us to the Arab market, aka “souk.” This labyrinthine maze of narrow streets was a pleasant assault on the senses with bright colors and alluring scents such as frankincense, fresh bread, and coffee.
