      Day 22–27

      Agucadoura

      Heute Nacht war Horror, wir hatten einen Schnarcher, den Kate sogar 2x weckte, ohne dass es etwas nützte und eine Schnarcherin, die ich weckte und ihr sagte, dass sie zu laut sei. Sie schaute mich nur ungläubig an, aber alle Pilger waren wach und beschwerten sich. Doch was nützt es, irgendwann schliefen wir ein, aber um 6 war alles auf um sich fertig zu machen.
      Heute ging es wieder dem Strand entlang, ab und zu suchten wir schon ein wenig abseits den Weg, immer der gleiche Strand und vor allem legten wir heute viele km auf den Holzstegen und im Sand zurück. Hostel hatte ich vorab schon reserviert und so konnten wir uns wirklich Zeit lassen und waren trotzdem um 12:30 beim Hostel und trafen alte, junge Bekannte.
      Heute konnte ich auch erstmal eine zeitlang am Strand verbringen, obwohl das Wasser saukalt ist.
      Am Abend waren wir ein netter Trupp, Kanadier, Dt., Ukrainer, Iren , Engländer und Franzosen, die sich bei Rot- und Weißwein gemeinsam zum Strand begaben, war ja gleich über der Strasse, und den Sonnenuntergang miterleben.      Read more

      Albergue Sao Tiago Labruge

      After walking 25 kilometers (15.9 miles), we arrived at this albergue or “hostel.” We chose a room with 8 bunk beds (16 mattresses), empty when we arrived, but now mostly full. There are plugs next to each bed-yea! My shower was lukewarm/cold, so it was refreshing and quick. We settled in-plugging in all devices, changing to fresh clothes, and putting on sandels.
      Dinner at Novo Rumo by the sea was delicious! Pasta Carbonara, mixed salad, hamburger (Charles) and ice cream. My mojito and Charles’ Macallen whisky hit the spot. Now it’s 9:00 pm, we have pre-packed our backpacks, and we are in bed after 41,445 steps! Tomorrow, we plan to do it all again!      Read more

      And this one really was (22.5km)🤣

      It really was what should have been yesterday! 22.5km (ish)...
      We left Angeiras at about 0800 after a pretty good night's sleep. It was nice to have a chalet to ourselves so we could spread out without upsetting anyone else or invading their space. We very quickly found the seaside, turned right, kept the Atlantic on our left, and headed off. It was quite chilly and there was a gentle breeze (more of that later🙄😅) but it was very pleasant walking along the boardwalk towards today's stop, Aguçadoura.
      Before too long, though, the wind started to pick up and was slowing us down. After a stop for breakfast at Vila Chi (where Sid and Marcel made an appearance) we headed off again. The wind was dreadful and we were heading straight into it! According to the BBC weather app we were enjoying a 'moderate breeze' of 18 knots (about 33km/hr) but a check on the Portuguese weather app put that into touch - we were fighting winds of 50km/hr, hardly a 'moderate breeze'🤪.
      We ventured on though (no choice, we've booked all but one of our accommodation) and stopped for a small beer at Vila do Conde, which is, funnily enough, where Julie, Anne and I got lost last time we were here 🙄🤭. Onwards and upwards (well, flatwards) for lunch at Povoa de Varzim (a long wait for a large wrap) then on again to our accommodation at Aguçadoura. This is a 'guest house' - it's an albergue with towels - and as we're pretty tired we decided to eat in. A good decision😋 Funny how you can walk and talk and eat and talk and still find lots to talk about 🥰🥰🥰. Looking forward to a good night's sleep and a gentle walk of just 22.2kms tomorrow in winds of only 40km/hr - sheer luxury 😆😅🤣      Read more

      Labruge and our first alburgue!

      We walked SO much farther than we had anticipated! 17 miles according to my pedometer! Definitely tired, but feeling accomplished! The coast was gorgeous! After Matasinhos it was miles and miles of boardwalk and beach! The sea wind in our face kept us cool on this hot day! So far, very greatful for the items I’ve packed with me!       Day 1 - Porto to La Bruge

      Beautiful day! Beautiful weather! The sun was out, but the wind, a steady breeze into your face, kept it comfortable if not cool. A little bit of a late start, but we needed the sleep.

      As mentioned, we worked our way back to the Cathedral and then wound our way to the coast going down, down, down, hundreds of steps and narrow streets.

       It was really very interesting seeing the city wake-up as we walked north. About two hours in we came across a nice cafe overlooking the Rio Douro and had coffee and breakfast. We missed our breakfast at the hotel because we left too early. I didn’t feel so much like a tourist as I did an observer. It’s easier to do when your only goal is to walk all day. I see a lot more.

      As we left the city we started walking on an incredible boardwalk that goes along the coast for miles and miles. It really made for a great walk on wood all day long. Better than sand or rocks. The Portugal coast is beautiful in many areas and the people take advantage of it by how they have structured their life around it.

      We stopped for a late lunch - beer and a salmon wrap at a restaurant on the beach. We have begun to meet our fellow Pilgrims and trade the traditional hello of “Bom Camino” each time we see them.

      The day finished at La Bruge at my first albergue. We are in an old school house with a room of about a dozen bunk beds. Dinner was on the coast, of course.

      Finished the day with over 41,000 steps and 15.9 miles.

      Tomorrow an early start for sure!

      Camino Day 1

      Today we left Porto to start the Camino. We walked along the seaside boardwalk all the way from Matosinhos. Beautiful beach and crashing waves. We stopped on Paraiso at Pe No Mar for lunch and had a lovely meal with great service. Now we are in Labruge (population 3000) before we head on for our hotel tonight in Vila Cha (even smaller population), just up the road.Read more

      Nach einer mäßigen Nacht ging es noch vor acht Uhr los. Einmal durch die Innenstadt, zurück an den Fluss Douro und dann immer am Wasser entlang.
      Eigentlich wollten wir mit der historischen Bahn die Strecke etwas abkürzen aber dir fuhr erst um 9:00. Also sind wir die 4 km dann doch zusätzlich gelaufen. Irgendwann am Meer angekommen ging es eine lange Strecke auf Holzstegen am Wasser entlang.

      I will survive

      Der Tag begann für mich auf dem Flughafen in Berlin. Es war laut, die Stühle sehr unbequem, daher an Schlaf kaum zu denken.

      Um 9:40 stieg ich am Flughafen in Porto aus dem Flugzeug und musste zunächst zur Kathedrale, um einen Pilgerpass zu bekommen. Dabei beherzte ich gleich den Rat, für 3 Euro auf dem Turm zu steigen und genoss einen tollen Rundumblick über Porto.

      Alsdann begann ich meinen Pilgerweg, an der Küste entlang bis nach Labruge. Für eine Spende ab 10 Euro bekommt man ein Bett von einer freundlichen Hospitalera zugewiesen.

      My day started at the airport BER in Berlin. It was noisy, the chairs were very uncomfortable, so it was hard to try sleeping.

      At 9:40 am I got off the plane at the airport in Porto and first had to go to the cathedral to get a pilgrim's pass. I immediately followed the advice to climb the tower for 3 euros and enjoyed a great all-round view of Porto.

      Then I began my pilgrimage along the coast to Labruge. For a donation of 10 euros or more, a friendly hospitalera assigns a bed in the local Albergue.      Read more

      Der Blick zurück versperrt den Blick für das was noch vor dir liegt. Du siehst das, was du bisher (noch nicht) geschafft hast und verlierst den Blick für das, was der Weg für dich bereit hält.

      Lektion 1: Der Weg ist geebnet, er lehrt dich und du musst “nur” folgen! Ähnlich, wie wenn du dich dafür entscheidest, deinen Weg mit Gott zu gehen, der dir zeigt, welche Bahn du einschlagen sollst. Du musst deinen Blick auf ihn richten, sonst übersiehst du seine Wegweiser.

      seine Stimme und halte dich an ihm fest;
      denn er ist dein Leben.“ (Dt 30, 20)

      Zur Route:
      Porto - Matosinhos - Lavra - Labruge

      Hinaus aus der Stadt Porto ging es an einer wenig schönen Straße über Holzstege durch Dünen und vorbei am Strand von Ort zu Ort. Während ich die ersten 5 km alleine lief, treffe ich für die weiteren 10 km eine Niederländerin, mit der ich die Begeisterung für die Küste teile. Nach wenigen Kilometern alleine traf ich einen Deutschen, der mich erst für eine Engländerin hält und mit dem die letzten 10 km wie im Flug vergehen. Zu guter Letzt trafen wir auf eine weitere Deutsche, mit der wir gemeinsam unsere schlichte Pilgerunterkunft (S. Tiago De Labruge - eine alte, umgebaute Schule) suchten.
