Day 1 - Porto to Angeiras

      April 12 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Today was our first day’s walk on the Camino Portuguese. It was so much fun to get to share it with Miguel who we met while walking the French Camino in the Fall of 2022. And it doesn’t hurt that he is Portuguese and speaks 5 languages.

We left from the Porto Cathedral and walked through the narrow streets of town to the river and then made our way to the coast. It was such a nice and peaceful walk as the day awakened. Once on the coast we headed north following beautiful wide beaches for a total of almost 16 miles. The weather was clear and warm which was a concern as the rains have been unyielding for weeks. We always wish we had trained more but hope that we get stronger as the days go by. We should sleep well tonight.

      Albergue Sao Tiago Labruge

      June 27, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

After walking 25 kilometers (15.9 miles), we arrived at this albergue or “hostel.” We chose a room with 8 bunk beds (16 mattresses), empty when we arrived, but now mostly full. There are plugs next to each bed-yea! My shower was lukewarm/cold, so it was refreshing and quick. We settled in-plugging in all devices, changing to fresh clothes, and putting on sandels.
Dinner at Novo Rumo by the sea was delicious! Pasta Carbonara, mixed salad, hamburger (Charles) and ice cream. My mojito and Charles’ Macallen whisky hit the spot. Now it’s 9:00 pm, we have pre-packed our backpacks, and we are in bed after 41,445 steps! Tomorrow, we plan to do it all again!

      Day 1 in the bag

      April 22 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

After a late start to my walk and making a detour for the aquarium. I made it to Lavra, where I met an extremely generous and helpful couple who helped me get to my hostel, which was way further inland than I thought.Read more

      To the monastery!

      April 6 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

It was a straight 15 km ealk out of Porto. A virtual straight line of boredom. At the end, I reached the Zona Industrial. Yes just as lovely as it sounds. The last 8 km's, were a bit nicer thru some small towns. I was anxious to get to the monesteiro de vairao in Vairao turned albergue, becuase I heard so many good things about it. The volunteer hospitalerio is very nice. Maria another volunteer, took all my clothes and washed and dried them in a machine for me! Beds are a little short tho. My feet are sticking thru openings in the foot board as I write. Anyway some pics from todayRead more

      Vila do Conde

      April 15 in Portugal ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

A full sized day at 24km.

We left Matosinhos at 8:30am and did 6km before stopping for breakfast at Cabo do Mundo. It took about 40 minutes to get out of Matosinhos and onto the ocean promenade.

Most of the rest of the day was walking on wooden boardwalks over the dunes behind the beach with wonderful views of the ocean.

Towards the end the sand had shifted to cover up the boardwalk so we had to slog through deep sand for a few stretches.

The weather was sunny and perfectly clear with a cooling breeze, making for excellent walking conditions.

We had lunch and a foot airing at Vila Chã, in a bar/bakery. Kev ordered a “Cachorro da Padaria” not knowing how big the thing was. With Dave’s help we did it justice.

Then it was about 8km to Vila do Conde. We passed the very long and wide beach south of town where lots of surfers were enjoying the nice regular swell rolling in.

We’ve checked in to Hotel Brazão near the centre of town.

After getting clean and washing clothes we dined on some big prawns cooked in garlic, washed down with the house vinho verde. It was a tiny family run restaurant, Adega do Testas.

      Vila Do Conde to Esposende

      April 11 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

We left charming Vila do Conde with its flower filled parks, impressive aqueduct, monumental fountains and tiled chapels to walk 17.7 miles to Esposende- a long day! We hiked through the small towns along the coast and had so many people wave to us or honk their horns and call out, “Bom Caminho!” Such friendly people! We were back on the boardwalks again for awhile until we moved a bit inland and hiked still on boardwalks but over the masseiras or garden plots- we saw tons of onions being harvested. In Aqucadoura we passed old windmills and in Estella there was a huge soccer complex and golf course. It was hot so we had a late lunch and lager in a café and rearranged our socks and packs. We finished our day hiking through a eucalyptus forest which was cool and breezy and smelled so good! The flowers were vibrant and beautiful all over the paths today and lemons trees are bursting with fruit. Today on the way we met so many other pilgrims- this warm and pleasant weather is a boon for all of us. We met people today from France, Hong Kong, Japan, Dubai, Norway and even a couple of Okies from Enid! And tonight at supper (which was low key in the albergue dining room) we met Amanda from the Florida Gator Nation! 🧡💙 In Apulia a little lady named Lina (age 90!) stopped us to chat and direct us to the church- she was amazing and sweet to talk to us. So tired from the day and tomorrow will be another long day so I’m headed to sleep and dreaming about our adventures for tomorrow.Read more

Day 2 - Angeiras to Póvoa de Varzim

      April 13 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

Last night (our first night on the Camino) we stayed in an out of the way campground where Miguel spent 10 summers of his youth. We had a great little 2 bedroom cabin with a kitchenette and bathroom. We grabbed bread rolls, ham and cheese plus Fritos and Oreos from the campground store for dinner and forced ourselves to stay awake until 7:30pm 😂 Gosh we were beat!

It is hard not to compare this Camino to the Frances route, but let me just say that walking all day looking at the ocean and listening to it crash against the shore all night is pretty heavenly. The fact that we have not encountered one proper hill is pretty crazy too. But that being said, the guys still have a few blisters to doctor and my hips are letting me know they don’t like carrying the backpack weight. Nothing a little ibuprofen can’t handle I hope. We are glad today’s 11 miles was a little shorter than yesterday.

Day 2 - La. Bruge to Sao Pedro de Rates!

      June 28, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

So, we walked today! Just walked, observed, talked and were silent. Just curious, is there anything else going on in the world? Nevermind. Please don’t answer that. I’m enjoying my world with Claudia too much.

We spent the first part of the day walking the Coastal Route from La Bruge to Vila de Conde. The Portuguese coastline is really beautiful. A little treacherous looking but beautiful. Most of it was along the boardwalk allowing us to see up close all the rock formations and huge, incredible beaches and the wonderful artwork along the way. Apparently stacking and painting rocks is an art form. Enjoyed that.

As we arrived in Vila de Conde and left the coast for the Central route we realized we would have to go it on our own. No way points. No yellow arrows. Just us and Apple Maps. Critically, we did not want to end up on a highway. So we chose a route avoiding it. Ultimately, we were successful. There were some doubts, but the scenery was well worth it. Endless fields of corn with the traditional granite white houses with red tile roofs surrounded us. Many of the crops were surrounded by tall stone fences making us feel like we were in a tunnel. And we had to watch for cars screaming by on barely a one lane road.

After some tense moments, we finally arrived in Arcos San Miguel for a thirty minute break and lunch at Cafe Barbosa for a small sandwich, chips, banana and Super Bock beer. What else is there? A bathroom! Thank God! Amen! The Camino always provides.

2.2 km later we ended up at the oldest albergue in Portugal, met some nice young Peregrinos, had a chance to visit with them, dinner and now to bed.

Not sure how far tomorrow. I have some blisters that have developed. Hopefully, we will be fine. The road less traveled is behind us and the path to Santiago is clear.

      15.8 miles and 36,000+ steps.

      Bom Camino!

Gute Nacht Geschichte- Sonntag Nr 5

      May 21, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Grins.

P.p.s. ohhhhhh 🤤🤤🤤🤤 war die Melone lecker

P.p.p.p.s. ich träume heute Nacht cun: ein Bungalow-Vermieter-Park-Besitzer zu sein
