      Reisebericht-Montag 1

      22 mei 2023, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

      Guuuuuuuten morgen.

Klack, Klack

      Our day in Porto

      23 april, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

We spent part of the day with Bruno on a private “Off the Beaten Path” walking tour of the city. He was incredibly knowledgeable — about history, architecture, food, languages, and art (including street art). It was the best city tour either of us has ever taken. We got our first Camino passport stamp at the Cathedral … and shared a francesinha sandwich for lunch and cataplana for dinner — both typical Portuguese dishes. And it feels like we spent hours zipping and unzipping our duffel bags and backpacks and fanny packs, as we organized and reorganized our gear, getting it ready for tomorrow!Meer informatie

      Caminho Portuguese 5

      12 september 2019, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

      23 april, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Had to walk towards the central route to head to Villa de Conde. The rural areas with wildflowers and eucalyptus forests are great. Once I reached Mindelos, I took a break to enjoy the architecture and snack.Meer informatie

      Day 2 & 5 - Queimada

Queimada: A Galician Ritual On Your Camino

      https://followthecamino.com/en/blog/queimada-th…

Sorry for being so absent! The Camino has been so much to taken, absorb, process while also trying to be present to the Camino Moments and Camino Angels! This post is about Day 2 & Day 5 because on the Camino you keep meeting up with the same people which is so cool and the constant reminder of how special the Camino really is!

Day 2 - Carla...in my photos was the Volunteer at the monastery who on surprise decided to introduce her pilgrams to Queimadra drink which is a traditional Portugues ceromony to ward off evil spirits for a strong Camino! We all had such fun with this and learning from Carla about the history of the Monastery and the drink and a history lessons of Portugal! We all fell in love w/ Carla...as we were leaving (Tuesday day 3) she told us she was starting her Camino on Wednesday!

Tonight (day 5) we arrived at Casa de Fernanda and were so warmly welcomed by Fernanda and fellow pilgrams.....then learning our Dutch friends from the monastery would be arriving to stay as well. The Australian, Michelle had met them the previous night and Michelle stayed where we were last night! The Camino God-Instances are so very real and definitely the spirit of the Camino. And to add to the excitement ...in walks CARLA who has her friend and her Friend Manuel who will be coming from Porto to cook at Fernanada's tonight! We were filled with such joy and excitement!!!!

After dinner....We see Carla preparing the Queimada! She shares her special ritual for the first time in Fernanadas home...,now undrstand Carla, Manuel and Fernanda are all Camino friends and do the Camino many times! Fernandas is special because not all Albugues in Portugal do community dinners and she does them every night! Fernanda's is talked about often on social media ...her love for pilgrams shines through with so much love and passion!!! After some ritual and drinking we then begin singing and playing the guitar...there were Dutch, Brussels, German, Austrailians, Americans and Portuguese at the table singing and dancing together! This is the spirit of the Camino ...tomorrow we all go off and hopefully meet again along the way! It was an extroverts dream come true! Such fun!

I will also share tomorrow about my Day 5 as a witness to the Camino...no phone...no photos..,a total day of being present to each and every moment (seeing, hearing, tasting, feeling and smelling)! Sometime disconnect has to be intentional to truly see the Spirit around us!

Today was such a special day! Oh and another thing Carls shared on Tuesday, "Every Camino is your first Camino because every Camino is different!" I can't wait for my next one! Everyone needs to Camino!!!

      Good Night for now😉😘

      To the monastery!

      6 april, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

It was a straight 15 km ealk out of Porto. A virtual straight line of boredom. At the end, I reached the Zona Industrial. Yes just as lovely as it sounds. The last 8 km's, were a bit nicer thru some small towns. I was anxious to get to the monesteiro de vairao in Vairao turned albergue, becuase I heard so many good things about it. The volunteer hospitalerio is very nice. Maria another volunteer, took all my clothes and washed and dried them in a machine for me! Beds are a little short tho. My feet are sticking thru openings in the foot board as I write. Anyway some pics from todayMeer informatie

      Day 2 on the Camino

      30 september 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Started the day from Vila Cha. Had a nice stop in Vila conde mid day and saw some lovely gardens, monuments, old buildings undergoing renovations and a community chapel dating back to the 16th century. Had a nice lunch too ☺️. Then onto Poa da Varzim. When we walked into town the public temperature notice board read 42 degrees! After a shower and a lay down at our hotel Casa Verde we went around the corner for dinner at O Patio where we had a lovely dinner of grilled fish. Highly recommend this restaurant. See the complimentary cheese board for a starter.Meer informatie

      Challenging day

      28 juni 2022, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Today was challenging but I (re) learned some import l lessons-
      1. Let fellow pilgrims help you. Charles helped me adjust my backpack which greatly reduced my hip and lower back pain. By mid day, I had learned to lean away from the sea wind and use my poles for physical support.
      2. Acknowledge the talents and skills of others. Because I was struggling, I encouraged Charles to walk in front to set the pace. He kept us going at 2.7 mph along the coast and when we turned toward the Central route, he kept us safe on tiny, busy country roads. I was truly thankful for his leadership.
      3. Trust in God. Using the Brierley guidebook, Apple Maps, and Google maps, we safely negotiated the unmarked route from Vila do Condo to Sao Pedro de Rates. Amid cornfields and farms, we saw no yellow arrows anywhere. It felt like we were creating this path. With Charles’ guidance, I knew God was walking with us.
      4. Grace is in abundance on the Camino. Today was marked by joyful grace. We enjoyed a respite in an empty courtyard, arriving for lunch at closing time. The lady at Cafe Barbosa graciously fed and watered two tired pilgrims plus we used her bathroom.
      5. Love, kindness, and history. Now we are in Albergue Sao Pedro do Rates, the oldest albergue in Portugal. The pilgrims are from Germany, Canada, France, DC, London-so friendly and fun. The hospitelero was gracious and helpful.

Charles has some foot issues, so I reminded him that we can take a day off. He’s not ready for that, but we’ll play it be ear.
      Goodnight!

      1st Day Trekking

      6 oktober 2022, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Started from Matozinhos today up to Vila do Castell. About 12.5 miles in all. It was an easy- ish 1st day with no significant climbs. I did get stuck having made a rookie mistake. I agonized for weeks on how to carry what I needed for the day. I had decided on a hydration pack and a Fanny pack and had done several walks with this combination which worked fine. Then I saw a bigger waist bag with pockets for water bottles and thought that would be the better way to go. So I ordered it but never tried it out before I left. So when i put it on today- fully packed- well, if you’ve seen the scene with Reese Witherspoon in “Wild” you get the idea. My lumbar spine was not happy. So- I have pulled out everything that wasn’t absolutely necessary and I’m gonna try to fashion some shoulder straps to help with support. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow.
I was in and out of cell reception so could not follow through on my listening plans. I saw and talked to a couple of other pilgrims today. A young lady from Switzerland and Jerry from Dublin- also a recent retiree. Jerry has been adventuring since he retired. Went half way around the world on a cargo ship and has also completed parts of the northern route.
So far I am really enjoying traveling alone! There is something really freeing about doing what you want when you want.
It will be an early night for me. Didn’t sleep well last night and want to be fresh for the walk tomorrow!
