      Cape Town, Day 3

      5 Oktober 2019, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Another full day! We planned on going up to Table Mountain since it was a beautiful, sunny, clear day without clouds or wind...HOWEVER...when we got half way up the mountain with our UBER driver, it became apparent that half of the tourists in Cape town had the same plan. So we abandoned that and got the driver to take us to the District Six Museum. This was the area of Cape Town that during apartheid was cleared of all Blacks and people of Colour, as they were forcibly moved to other areas of town that were only for their ‘race’. The history was told with many photos, stories and displays, and the lady who talked to us, told us of her own mother’s evacuation against her will which killed her two days later, of a broken heart. We then Ubered to the hospital where Christiaan Barnard performed the first heart transplant and heard the story in a private tour which was extremely interesting and well done. We then went to an Art Gallery which came highly recommended to us, and although the building where it was displayed was amazing, the art was hard for us to appreciate. We also went to a Diamond Museum, run by the Shimanski Company where we had a 45 minute private tour that taught us about diamond mining, history, grading and cutting which was very informative. There was a singing and dance group performing in the square which we also enjoyed. All in all a busy and interesting day!Baca selengkapnya

      Kapstadt

      24 Oktober 2019, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

In dieser Gegend waren wirklich alle Häuser bunt, was sehr lustig aussah. Baca selengkapnya

      Cape Town - Day 1

      6 Februari 2020, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

I got up at 7.30am after another hot night in the dorm room with mosquitoes around in the room. I slept quite well considering the heat but still felt very tired when I woke up. I got a shower and had some cereal before packing my things and boarding the truck for our departure time of 9am. We had a relatively short drive into the wealthy suburbs of Cape Town with the huge clouded silhouette of Table Mountain dominating the skyline above the city.
We arrived at the busy and bustling Ashanti Gardens Lodge hostel. It was a well furnished hostel with a big reception area, bar/restaurant, communal kitchen and small pool. Lots of young travellers were moving around the corridors and sitting in the large patio area outside. We had arrived early after only an hour's drive with unexpectedly light traffic in the city. This meant that we had to wait for our dorm room to be made ready. We used the time by looking through the leaflets of activities and English Brian, Lauren and I booked for two days on the 'hop on and hop off' open top buses which take you on different tours around the city. As we readied to depart for the bus stop where the tour started, our dorm room became available and Monica, Phil, Bro, Lauren, Kristin, English Brian and I all claimed our bunk beds.
Then English Brian, Lauren and I all headed down through a local park and through city streets until we eventually found the ticket office and bus stop for the 'red route' of the 'hop on and off' bus tour. I sat in the front and plugged in the headphones for the informative audio tour which picked out sites and histories of the city. We headed up towards Table Mountain with Lion's Head mountain behind (so named because it looks remotely like a lion's head with a mane). Black maned lions once lived around the Cape Town area. These are stunning looking mountains with wonderful views over the city and deep blue bay. The bus stopped by where the cable cars take people to the top of the mountain. We then headed through very expensive real estate which is shielded from the strong winds that blow through the mountain corridors. We drove down and along the coastal bay areas with azure blue seas and sandy beaches. The coastal road had lots of fresh fish restaurants. We drove back towards the city, past a stadium built for the football world cup in Soith Africa. We reached the harbour and waterfront area and decided to get off to see a large arts and crafts shopping area and then on into the V & A food market where we chose between the many world food options for lunch. I had an Indian chicken tikka wrap which tasted a bit strange and wasn't my best choice. We then tried to take a harbour tour on a boat which was included for free on our ticket, but was cancelled due to the high winds that day. While we were there we watched lots of cape fur seals on a wooden platform. Their calls and behaviour, where the males vied for space, amused us and Lauren and I started 'communicating' through seal calls to each other which was a bit craziness that kept us entertained until we got back on the bus. The bus then returned through the inner city streets. It was interesting to hear that most of that part of the city had been reclaimed from the sea by the Dutch. We arrived back at the starting point and walked back up to the hostel.
I was able to get a shower and a short rest before it was time to meet for our group meal at Mama Africas to mark the official end of the journey for many of our fellow travellers. Sadly, Ian didn't make the meal from his hotel which was a shame as I was therefore unable to say goodbye and thank him for his kind and supportive conversation several days earlier. The restaurant was busy with a wonderful band playing African 'fusion' music. I enjoyed it so much that I drunkenly bought their CD at a somewhat exorbitant price. I ate a very enjoyable "catch of the dau" 'Derado'? fish with chips which was very nice indeed. I washed this down with rum mojitos and got quite drunk as a result. After the meal, we headed over to a loud bar where I drank more rum and coke and danced to the music with fellow travellers Lauren, Kristin and Vincent. We decided to head back to the hostel after an hour or so and it was time to say our goodbyes to fellow traveller Vincent as he took his leave. Back at the hostel, I fell asleep quickly thanks the large amount of alcohol in my system.

      Dag 16 Kaapstad

      16 November 2023, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

      Willkommen in Südafrika

      29 September 2019, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

      A trip to the cinema

      14 Juni 2023, Afrika Selatan ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

It was a stormy night with strong winds whistling all around us. This morning, it was very wet, but we were in no rush to go anywhere. We got chatting to a South African lady over breakfast. She is living here while she waits for her new house to be ready. We then spent the morning catching up with posts and then had kedgeree for lunch before venturing out to the cinema.

We took an Uber to the cinema as it would have been a 50-minute walk in the rain. Unbelievably, this was the first time we had ever used Uber! I’ve had the app installed for ages, but have never needed to use it! Anyway, today we took an Uber there and another one back. It worked like a dream, so I guess it won’t be the last time we use it. Welcome to the 21st century!!

The film this afternoon wasn’t as important to us as the cinema itself. We had been recommended it by René and several other people. The Labia Theatre opened in 1949. It has changed little since. It was built in the Art Deco style and has a lovely garden where, when the weather is good, you can sit and enjoy a drink and a snack before seeing a movie. Inside, there is a bar. You are allowed to take your drinks into the cinema. Mark asked for a red wine (they had five different varietals on offer!). The lady asked if he’d like a single or a double! This was a first! Naturally, he asked for a double. He got about a pint of pinotage, which got him through the film quite well!!

There is a popcorn kiosk. You buy the popcorn plain, and then add your own flavourings from shakers supplied – you can choose from butter, chilli, sugar, salt, spice, salt and vinegar, lemon, chocolate, or coffee!

The theatre has four screens. The one we were in was tiny and decorated with very old-fashioned curtains! Throughout the foyer, there were posters from the golden age of cinema. The atmosphere was very nostalgic. The whole experience was memorable. It was a really enjoyable afternoon. The film, About my Father starring Robert de Niro, was OK, too 😊!

Before going back to the hotel, we popped in to Spar to get some bread to go with cheese this evening.

A second trip to the Labia Theater

      19 Juni 2023, Afrika Selatan ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

We walked up the the Labia Theatre in plenty of time to see Greatest Days, the newly-released film of the Take That musical. It isn’t the best movie we’ve ever seen, but it was enjoyable enough!

We took an Uber back to the hotel after the film and had a panic moment when Mark realised he’d left his phone on the back seat! Fortunately, we caught up with him in the Spar car park next door and got it back! In the hotel, they told us that we had no hot water in our room and offered us a change of room. We didn’t fancy moving, so said we would manage for now. Hopefully, they will get it fixed tomorrow.
