      Day 24

      The Third Largest Church in the World

      Well I’ve now entered and walked the largest church in the world. Incredible! It took 70 years to build constructed on the site of a mosque. No sign of the mosque as it was in poor condition so it was destroyed and the church replacing it. The construction was begun by King Fernando in the 13th century. He is San Fernando and is the city’s patron saint. And is also entombed here.
      He is so revered that in his feast day his mummified body is brought out for parishioners to pay their respects. There was no access to the knave he is at fue yo restorations.

      Sevilla

      April 24 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

      Als letzten Stop in Andalusien haben wir Sevilla auserkoren. Wir brechen also morgens die Zelte in Humilladero ab und fahren in den Norden Andalusiens. Dort haben wir einen Campingplatz etwas außerhalb empfohlen bekommen, von dem aus wir mit dem Bus direkt ins Zentrum fahren können.
      Pünktlich zur Mittagszeit kommen wir dort an und essen erstmal Mini-Bocadillos im "100 Montaditos", das Felix noch aus seinen Studizeiten kennt.
      Frisch gestärkt starten wir dann mit dem Citytrip. Als erstes versuchen wir noch spontan Tickets für den Alcazár Palast zu bekommen, aber auch hier vergeblich. Spontan ist nicht, auch nicht in der Nebensaison. Also schlendern wir zuerst durch das hübsche Viertel Santa Cruz mit seinen verwinkelten Gässchen und endlosen Tapasbars. Im Anschluss geht's zur Kathedrale (der größten gotischen Kathedrale Europas - da sind sie wieder, die Superlative) mit ihrem berühmten Glockenturm. Ein extrem beeindruckendes Gebäude, das man mit der nötigen Geduld sogar spontan noch hätte besichtigen können, aber die Schlange am Eingang schreckt uns dann doch etwas ab und wir entscheiden uns dagegen. Stattdessen werfen wir den Schlendergang wieder an und durchstreifen die Gassen bis zum futuristischen "Metropol Parasol", den Pilzen von Sevilla.
      Dann geht's zum Fluss und von dort endlich zum berühmten Plaza de España, für uns auf jeden Fall ein absolutes Highlight. Auch wenn sich dort die Touris wimmeln und man sich dank Ruderbooten ein wenig wie im Disneyland fühlt. Tilda verbringt den ganzen Tag mal wieder bestens gelaunt in der Kraxe und wird nicht müde auch noch beim Anblick der 1.000 Pferdekutsche freudig zu jauchzen. Trefferquote: 100%
      Nach einem kurzen Abstecher durch den Beginn des (riesigen) Parque de Maria Luisa geht's dann zurück zum Campingplatz.      Read more

      Seville

      Day 10-Seville

      Leaving our oasis, we reluctantly started the trek back to Portugal exchanging stories of Jack the cat along the way. Thom even stating he’s not sure he’s ok will never seeing our American football loving cat again! Today, a stopover in Seville. Our flat not quite ready, Matt skillfully navigated with manual transmission the not so two way sardine like can of a parking garage. Heading to the lively historic heart of Seville, we marveled at the sprawling gothic cathedral. It’s tower, always to be higher than everything thing else in the city, is the center of life in Seville and catholic Spain. A moorish city for 500 years, when reconquered in 1248, the goal was to effectively stomp out the mosque by building a cathedral over it. The result, a sprawling behemoth that is noted in the Guinness book to be the largest cathedral (in square footage) in the world. Turning our sites to the town, we walked the outskirts of the Royal Alcazar and into the Bario Santa Cruz (or Jewish quarter). Quaint narrow streets with shops and restaurants, we stopped to partake in some more stinky cheese and sangria.

      Our next adventure, prying the car out the public garage and into the basement of our flat. A first for us all-a car elevator. Once again, Matt was victorious! Taking a little siesta and missing our chance to see the barber, we headed out later to experience an Andalusian tradition-Flamenco! The dancers and singer mostly sad, oftentimes looking like they were in pain, buliding, building and building and then super sweaty at the end-I felt as if I had watched someone giving birth. But after reading more about it, Flamenco was at first the dance of the outcasts/Gypsies in Southern Spain and a form of expression. Morphing later to the romantic and national identity it is today. Afterwards, on to the other typical Spanish tradition. . . Tapas during the 9 pm dinner rush! Getting lost while finding gelato on the way to our flat, fortunately all roads lead to the cathedral, I’m pretty sure purposeful and metaphor for life here in Spain.      Read more

      Casa Funes

      Dann suchen wir das Alcazar, was gar nicht so einfach ist, weil wir da als nächstes hinwollen. Es stellt sich heraus, dass die Tickets im Moment ausverkauft sind und Susanne bricht in Panik und Hektik aus und macht Olli, Jakob und Theo ganz verrückt, die sich gerade gemütlich etwas zu trinken und ein Eis kaufen wollen. Wir stellen uns in die lange Ticketschlange und finden heraus dass es für 18 Uhr noch Karten gibt. Wir versuchen diese online zu buchen und stehen zeitgleich weiter in der Schlange an. Es ist so schwierig, die Tickets online zu buchen, dass wir irgendwann am Ticketschalter ankommen und sie dort oldschool kaufen. Dann endlich erste Trinkpause in der Bar Casa Funes

      Cathedral

      After a lunch back at the apartment we headed back to the same area as we had on line tickets for 1500h to enter the Seville Cathedral. Very large and impressive from the outside and inside and out. The audioguide was not very helpful as it was difficult to figure out where you were in this massive structure. We viewed the main altar and the tomb of Cristobol Colon (Columbus) and a few of the chapels and then were told they were closing early and we had to leave. We would have liked another 30 minutes but on the other hand we were actually feeling rather tired and when we got back to the apartment and out of the 32 degree heat we both relaxed and rested up for our dinner out which Doug had arranged for our 44th Anniversary.

      Catedral de Santa María de la Sede is the third largest church in the world, after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and St. Paul's Cathedral in London.

      The Cathedral was built on the site where once a Moorish mosque stood. This mosque was taken from the Moors in 1248 and was then used as a cathedral. In the 13th century, the mosque was destroyed, except for the Patio de los Naranjos (the orange court), and the Giralda tower. Construction of the cathedral began in 1403. The cathedral was finally completed in 1507.

      Tomb of Christopher Columbus. His remains were transferred from Cuba to Seville 1898 and now rest in this tomb. It is adorned with a bronze coffin, carried by four figures symbolizing the kingdoms of Castile, León, Aragon and Navarre

      The minaret of the Cathedral, La Giralda, is the tower of the mosque that was preserved after the demolition of the mosque when it was replaced by a cathedral. On top of the Giralda Tower is a four-metre high bronze statue. This statue, representing faith, is nicknamed the Giraldillo. The statue turns with the wind and, consequently the tower got its nickname (Giralda = weather vane).      Read more

      Heute Mittag ging es von Córdoba nach Sevilla. Wir haben als erstes unser Quartier bezogen und kamen aus dem Staunen nicht mehr heraus. So eine schöne Wohnung und noch dazu direkt neben der Kathedrale 🥰. Ein Traum!Read more

      Sevilla

      Um 16 Uhr sind wir schon in Sevilla. Der Campingplatz am Puerto ist nichts besonderes, aber recht nahe bei der Stadtmitte. Wir testen Uber und fahren in die Stadt zum Plaza de España und genießen noch die Abendstimmung in Sevilla. Ein Tag vor Heilig Abend ist die Stimmung natürlich überall weihnachtlich. Und wir sitzen im Freien und lassen uns Tapas mit Sangria und Cerveza schmecken.Read more
