Málaga, Córdoba, end of the road trip

      March 24 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

We stayed in a lovely Airbnb along one of the beaches off Malaga. We explored Málaga, had a day trip to Córdoba, and then road-tripped through Almería and Alicante to Donostia-San Sebastián. Driving in another country isn’t for the faint of heart!Read more

      Siebter Stopp San Sebastian

      February 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

      Moin Leute,

      Stellplatz San Sebastian

      February 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

      Weiter gehts nach Spanien

      May 21 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Read more

      Public Transit Excitation

      July 20, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

The bad news: I had a 15 minute connection between trains and a late arrival. The great news?

My 1st train of the day's late arrival was ameliorated by good fortune in that I bought the 2nd ticket at the same time, in person, and Renfe ( the train co ) therefore held train #2 to allow a smooth connection! Yes! Winning!
Internet purchase would have been 2 tickets...and a sad overnight stay in Vitoria for me.

Of course, train 2 was thus late arriving to San Sebastian (where I hoped to grab a snack and a beverage). This is not great news as it means I missed the Euskotren ( metro ) that I planned to grab to reach Hendaia, France with plenty of time to catch another train/metro to my destination (Biarritz).

      The good news?
I am a good walker. I made the next metro that might take 40 min to reach the station in Hendaia and the last train to Biarritz leaves in 52 minutes. Or...tomorrow

      Exciting!
If all goes swimmingly there is a good chance that I'll make it!

People ask me: "Why trains? Just fly!"
Well.... About 20% of the worldwide corporations are responsible for more than 90% of all emissions. Airlines are heavily represented in that 20%. And I like lookin out the window.

But.... Does it help? I don't know.

      Exploring Gipuzkoa with Ander

      May 21, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Right next to Donostia-San Sebastián the beautiful area of Igeldo is located. We were lucky to spend several days with my friend Ander and his family. For those who don't remember: Ander was my flatmate in Finland. He took us to some hidden idyllic spots next to the sea and we hiked on top of Hernio, a popular summit in the heart of the region Gipuzkoa. In the town of Usurbil we experienced the annual traditional cider festival. Each stall offered different types of cider from the region and the trick was to pour the cider into the glass from the greatest possible height. :-D Very tasty the cider, by the way.

The other day Ander organized kayaks and we paddled to the rocky island in the middle of San Sebastián Bay. The view towards the city was amazing and luckily no one else was there. A big highlight for Alina and me was the possibility to watch the first football match for us in a stadium. Fighting for the qualification for the Champions League, Real Sociedad San Sebastián won 1:0 against UD Almeria. The atmosphere with 31,000 celebrating fans in the stadium was great.

As a small thank you, we invited Ander's family to a typical German dish: Kartoffelbrei, Frikadellen mit gedünsteten Äpfeln und Salat. As desert: Rote Grütze mit Vanillesoße. (By the way, we had to adjust the meal planning several times because not all ingredients were available.) Thanks a lot to Ander and his family! We enjoyed our stop in Basque country very much!

      Cooking Class

      May 14 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We did a fantastic cooking class today with Lander, a chef with 25 years of experience from https://www.amaurcook.com/
The class conducted in Lander's apartment with only 6 of us was a fantastic way to spend an afternoon.
We made some of the all time most popular pintxos from San Sebastion.

We prepared anchovies in order to create Antxoa Jardinera - removing the scales and bones and leaving them in a brine. Chopped the vegetables and placed in a vinaigrette to atop the anchovy. A version of this is sold in every pinxtos bar.

Tarta de Queso or the 'famous' cheese cake was made next using 'La Viña's' recipe. 'La Viña' est in 1959 is a local bar that churns through 100s of these cakes every day! Tarta La Queso is considered the one and only pinxtos dessert.

We also put together 'gildas' - on a small skewer, an olive, followed by one end of the anchovy, 3 piparrak, the other end of the anchovy and finished with another olive. Topped off with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Designed by a customer in 1940s to be eaten in one mouthful. It was named after Rita Haywoths character in a 1946 film -"green, salty and a little bit spicy".

The highlight dish for me was the Tortilla de Patata (potato omlette). Confit potatoes, caramelised white onion and eggs. The best Tortilla I've had!

Hojaldre de Txistorrra or chorizo in puffed pastry are a very easy, quick to prepare mouthful of yum!

RIsotto de Idiazábal was another highlight and similar to the risotto we had in town earlier in our trip. Using puntalette, similar to orzo and a beautiful, smoky cheese.

Accompanying our dishes we drank a local boutique beer, sagardoa, txakoli.

      Fantastic day!

      Logistics..San Sebastián, Spain

      September 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

Today started out with a list of things to do. Find Holly was first on the list 😆 Long story, I won’t get into it, but if you ever go to the Madrid airport, don’t underestimate it!! I’ll just say, she missed the flight, and we were separated.
We both mailed our luggage in separate cities this morning and because the P.O. didn’t open until later, there was no way I’d make it to San Sebastián at a decent hour so I taxi’d to meet Holly, who ended up in San Sebastián. Nathalie left from our room at 7:30 and walked the city (Irun) for an hour trying to find the yellow arrows to lead her out of town. Crazy. This is the Camino Freaking Norte. Paint some yellow arrows please. She walked 38 Km to San Sebastián today-my guide book says it is 26km. Her Garmin watch 38km. Tricksters. That’s super hard. She was tired, but totally enjoyed the views and met people that we will probably bump into all the way to Santiago. Holly and I sat at a beach bar and drank a couple sangria’s before going back to our shared Hostal-just us 3 in a room which is nice. Once Nathalie arrived at the Hostal we all did our laundry and then walked down to the historic center of the city to enjoy delicious pinxtos (we are in Pays Basque so they aren’t called Tapas here) The streets were lively, full of families, lovers, and friends, of all ages. So amazing. Moms and daughters walking arm and arm, the elderly out for a date night in their Sunday best. Here, I don’t think people get babysitters. If the parents are out, they are pushing strollers and kids are playing everywhere while the adults sip wine, eat, and talk. It astounds me how people aren’t concerned about kids getting kidnapped. They are playing in the center and parents don’t even look up to keep an eye on them. They trust. They feel safe.
Tomorrow there is a severe weather warning/flash floods. Today was hot and not a sign of such weather. We will see.

      San Sebastian - Donostia

      September 21, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

I'm shattered. I set out from Irún with my German companion, Yannis, at around 7am. We hadn't been walking long when the road started ramping up and Yannis has legs like stilts so I was having to push to keep up. We stopped briefly for photos and then the rain hit. The hill we were climbing was only 650 metres high but the wind and rain made it feel very remote. I was so glad I wasn't alone. We caught up with a Spanish guy, Alfonso, who tagged along with us as Yannis led the way. It was tough. So tough that at the first bar we saw, after the hills, Alfonso bought us all a drink. There was still plenty of walking ahead but it was so good to be sitting and chatting (as best you can with three nationalities) and not out on the hills.

The rain continued until we reached San Sebastian and I was ready to drop. We had to leave Alfonso as he hadn't booked into our hostel. It was hugs all round.

Yannis, who is a chef, is cooking tonight. I guess we should be out eating in San Sebastian but the hostel is warm and dry and bed isn't too far away. And, anyway, we haven't really got the right clothing to be in the town. You can smell the money here whereas we just smell.

Photos - The rain restricted photo opportunities so there's only San Sebastian cathedral, sunrise, Yannis and Alfonso on the hills.

      San Sebastian

      May 14, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Also alles in allem ein toller Tag 😉
