      Etappe 19: Astorga nach Foncebadon

      October 10, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

      Foncebadón, near the top!

      October 21, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

5.2 km uphill to this small mountainside village. According to the guide books it was once completely abandoned, but the modern Camino's popularity has brought it back!

There are many ruins of stone buildings along the street.

We have climbed up into the clouds, walking through mist and light drizzle, but still no heavy rain.

      Back in the Mountains

      October 21, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Tonight I'm sleeping at 1400m and have left the Meseta behind and made my way into the mountains again. The days are colder and drizzly but so far my timing has been good with only light rain while I've been out on the trail. Fonceban, my place of rest tonight, is known for being covered in either snow or fog so I've been lucky to see the view this afternoon.

I am in an area of Spain that has slightly different architecture and is quite remote by Spainish standards. It's expected to rain everyday for the next ten days so the warm Spanish weather is behind me now.

I had a lovely dinner and conversation with new pilgrims friends last night and met up with several ones I've previously met tonight. It is still close to impossible to have a quiet dinner to yourself even if you wanted to.

I haven't had the camera out much again.

      Leon

      November 6, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

I had a blister on my heel for a while. Compared to busted elbows it foes not hurt. But very inconvenient for me.
So I took a rest day in Leon and popped that giant thing and let it dry out.
Leon is the last big city before arriving in Santiago and I enjoyed myself.
      Sights, food, drinks.

      Enjoy the pictures

Da sagte Jesus: »Du glaubst, weil du mich gesehen hast.

      Elli

      May 24, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Looks may be deceiving … Today we started at an elevation of around 1200m, we ended at around 1200m 16km down the road. That should take us about 4 hours with a second breakfast stop! Well, it didn’t …
In between all that we claimed to an elevation of 1580m, the highest point on the Camino, and then walked all the way back down again! We are back in the mountains which means beautiful views, slower walking and rocky paths at times. The views and scenery are worth the extra work. Tomorrow we keep going down to about 500m so I’m sure there will be some whinging tomorrow about sore knees or something.
Oh, and yes, the new shoes did their job, tested on all these surfaces was a baptism of fire! NO New blisters today …
At the top of the hill there is an Iron Cross. Pilgrims leave a rock or something from home at the cross, a symbolic discarding of some baggage or saying goodbye. It was quite moving there seeing all the rocks and messages and for some people discarding some real baggage. While we were there a lady placed a series of shells with names and had a little cry! We are constantly reminded what a privileged life we have had when we see other’s pain.
Leaving our Monastery was also a lovely moment as the 3 monks and fellow pilgrims were there to say goodbye after morning prayers. It is so odd how good friendships can be formed in such a short time on the Camino when everyone’s open to it.
We are staying in a lovely mountain village tonight and views from our Albergue are incredible. We are going to have to really try hard to be up for sunset (9:30pm) as I think it will be worth it. We had lovely catch up drinks with Tammy and James, who are on a similar time line to us so we will be seeing a lot more of them

Rabanal to Acebo de San Miquel

      September 14, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Left Rabanal for Acebo de San Miquel at 8 :15 AM. Approximately 21 km's. We are not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy. Back in the mountains again. In order to reach the Famous Iron Cross, had to climb into the thin air. Unlike the first mountain phase where your hip muscles was screaming for blood flow, your ligaments and tendons for flexibility, and your lungs for oxygen your body has adapted. Like Robyn Bess said earlier you just can't adjust for that straight downhill. Just brutal. On this very arduous downhill you realize that your trekking poles have added value. Not only do they assist your downhill, but they also serve like windshield washers with the back and forth keeping the swarm of flies out of your face. After a while you are satisfied just keeping the flies out of your mouth. The view from the albergue is awesome. There are no words that will accurately describe it. Back to the Iron Cross. I felt his spirit there today. It was so gratifying, made all the fatigue have value. Will machine wash clothes, then air dry. Very tired, but very fulfilled. Robyn, again I am in total agreement on trying to ascend a mountain on slate rock for a few km's. Very, very difficult. I am happy for today. Will bid you a fond adieu. Buen Camino.Read more

      Molinaseca

      September 26, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

      Climb Every Mountain…

      September 27, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

      Astorga to Foncebaden
      Day 26 - 26 km

After a lovely stay in Astorga we started the day around 8 and was welcomed with another amazing sunrise. The first few kms were beside roads again but we soon started up the country pathways. The terrain has changed again from the flat fields and farmlands to more rolling hills and scrub land. We spent most of the day slowly climbing. The last 5kms was extremely tough but we are nearly at the top and the views were again amazing. We are actually as high now as we were on our first couple of days in the Pyrenees. Only 2km climb tomorrow before the descent. After booking into our Albergue we had another great night with fellow pilgrims.
The weather again was sunny and we are struggling with the fact that we are only getting a tan on one side as the sun is always on our left. Something to work on in the two weeks we are holidaying afterwards⛱️👙🌊☀️😉

      Take my breath away...

      September 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

      Foncebaden to Molinaseca
      Day 27 - 19 kms

Well, the downhill decent into Molinaseca certainly took our breath away!! It was so spectacular with its views of the mountains, but very hard going on an incredibly steep decline, loose rock and large trip hazards... lots of concentration required! Hats off, and major respect for the elderly and more challenged pilgrims who have made this journey before us 👏 you are freaking awesome. 🤩
Another glorious sunrise 🌅, coffee stop in the most beautiful spot... mountain views to die for... and then the down... very steep!!
Such a gorgeous town we are staying in, we had a lovely meal tonight overlooking the riverside, very chilled now and ready for a big 31 kms tomorrow. We're going great 🥰🥰
