      Pamplona

      September 11, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 93 °F

14 mile walk today into Pamplona with 90+ temps and lots of steep ups and downs. Thankfully we started at 6:45 and walked the first half in nice temperatures. We are finding that leaving before the sun comes up is wonderful and helpful.

We stopped for a pilgrim’s breakfast in a small village where we found the only place open because of a small sign on the trail nailed to a tree. We shared a meal with a doctor from Bakersfield and a lady from Hanford. What a small world. The owner of the cafe/store had done the Camino 11 times and shared with us the impact it made on his life.

Once we got through a very long, hot walk into the city we where greeted with beautiful city streets to tour. I am still amazed by the age of Spain and how clean everything is. Had a fun lunch with new friends and now waiting for the city to wake back up (after siesta) for the night.

Encouraged by the kindness of pilgrims

      August 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Today was a beautiful day - sunny and in the 70s. Everything felt easier with sunshine after two days of rain. The walk was more level today and was a welcome relief from the ascents and descents of the past few days. It was a beautiful walk through different patches of forests and passing by farms and through little villages along the way.

I walked for a bit with some people I met from Germany and Spain on my second night in the hostel. Their pace ended up being too fast for me, so I lagged behind. My knee started hurting pretty badly so I stopped to try to fashion a compression band out of my buff. I was feeling pretty worn and tired by the time I was getting to the last few miles for the day. As I was walking slowly through one of the little villages before Pamplona, the German man called out my name from a cafe and invited me to sit with them for a coffee. I walked with them the final mile into Pamplona and was grateful for the companionship and not having to focus on finding my way and just following them.

Pamplona feels like a big city after the tiny villages I’ve been staying in so far. I wandered into the old part of Pamplona to find somewhere to eat and saw some people I met from Ireland sitting at a restaurant outside. They invited me over and I asked if I could join them for dinner. I think the longer I’m on the trail the more kinship there will be with other pilgrims I’ve already met and new people I’ll continue to meet. I’m grateful for the companionship today.

      The Road to Pamplona

      September 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

      Zubiri to Pamplona
      Day 4 - 21 km

We had an early start today as we wanted to get to Pamplona before the 31 degree heat set in. It was a good day walking with all the fellow pilgrims we have met along the way. Our first mission was to find a coffee shop but alas we were either too early or they were closed on Tuesday’s. 😧 We still ambled along past little villages and then into the big metropolis of Pamplona by 1.30pm. Our accommodation is great at Hostel Alho right in the middle of Pamplona and planning a rest day for tomorrow so we can check out the sights. Great night looking around the busy town square with a few wines and our first taste of Paella.Read more

      Rest Day Pamplona!

      September 6, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

      Pamplona
      Day 5 - Rest Day

We spent a lovely day being tourists in Pamplona. Another hot one so we decided we needed to shop for something cooler to wear...any excuse 💃😉
Highlight of the day was visiting the bull ring. Great informative self tour, gave good insight into the passion surrounding the sport.
Very pleased we took the day to explore this beautiful city, however as far as rest days go we failed in that department as we still clocked up over 10k for the day!
Planning a 6am start for tomorrow as it looks like a tough day with some big hills to climb along the way! Back into it!! 😁

      Pamplona

      Yesterday in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

      Day 4 Pamplona
Distance from Larrasoana to Pamplona 19kms

The temperature is getting warmer and it was pleasurable to walk on a dry surface in warm sunny conditions. We stumbled across a 13th Century church with its doors open and Sister Maria in residence.
It was a long easy walk into Pamplona and being Mother’s Day the city was buzzing with families. We found the famous Iruna Bar the hangout of Ernest H and enjoyed the local Rosado and delicious tapas. Dined with fellow pilgrims this evening and look forward to a rest day here in Pamplona tomorrow.

      Jakobsweg Tag 3

      March 11, 2020 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

"Herzlich Willkommen an Bord! Hinsetzen, Klappe halten und bitte möglichst schnell wieder verschwinden! Danke!"

      Into Puente La Reina

      September 25, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

Today we left Pamplona and walked up up up to the Alto de Perdón, which is where that famous metal monument is that you see on “The Way.” It wasn’t as tough as we thought it would be. Going down was rocky and slippery though! There were so many windmills on the ridge up there. We were excited to get close to them so we could hear the sound they make. They were almost entirely silent until we got really really really close. And up close they make a sound like an airplane flying overhead. It’s quiet though. If you live right next to those windmills, I think he would disregard the sound like any other kind of white noise.

We stopped in a town along the way for a sandwich and soda at an albergue and bar. Two Israeli men invited us to share a table with them. We chatted for quite a while and learned all about how Yom Kippur, which is today, is celebrated. Some people fast but not them.

Over the last five or 6 miles between the bottom of the hill, and the town that we’re staying in, it was quite hot. The temperature was probably about 85°F. There wasn’t much shade so we were pretty exhausted from walking in the sun. we both put on sunscreen which was great. Unfortunately I missed a little spot on the back of my leg and it is a very bright color of red.

We are going to stay in this town, Puente La Reina, for two nights to rest our feet and legs. So far it doesn’t seem like a very exciting place. The church is pretty. Everything was closed on Sunday yesterday. Today everything is closed because it’s Monday. I’m not sure how that works! We went to a bar and the woman there told us if we come back at 8 o’clock she’ll sell us a hamburger. So right now we have walked 19+ miles and we are eating chips and cokes in our room. Hopefully we are able to get some food tonight! We did stock up on non-perishables in a little store along the way. We have a mango, some dried pineapple, and some granola bars now too. And as much as David made fun of my skittle purchase, they came in handy today when we were tired and hot. I think skittles and Lifesavers are foods that deserve their own food group! Foods that are terrible for you that elevate your blood sugar really quickly when you are doing stuff that burns through fuel!

We’re looking forward to a rest day tomorrow. Our intention is to do a little as possible! Our feet and our legs are a little sore, but basically in good shape. We purposely chose a sleepy little town to take a rest day in, so we would not be tempted to go all over an interesting town like Pamplona and see all the cool things.

      First night in an albergue

      July 23, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

There were 14 beds in my room - 7 sets of bunks.
The pic shows the view from my bed in the morning: there's a draw curtain that helps with privacy and the lights that go on and off at any hour as each other guest goes about their business. My backpack added to that. I hung it with an S hook, which I brought based on a tip I read on the Camino forum I've been following.

I didn't sleep the whole night though but got up at 7 feeling rested enough. Luckily snoring in the room hasn't been too bad. I brought ear plugs but couldn't find them last night. I have to get better organised.

I got the sleeping bag and liner out, but only needed the liner. It was warm in the room, despite the cool outside.

The albergue is very clean, the showers and toilets are plentiful and in perfect condition. I will soon make use of the kitchen for the self-service breakfast, and then will have to pack everything up again, hoping to be able to easily find what I need, when I need it.

      Day 5

      August 28, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

A really lovely walk again today with nothing too challenging.. I was tempted to try and keep up with the First Lady in a trail running race that was happening on a part of the route as I was sure I could have done😂.. there didn’t seem to be as many people on route today, whether some had started particularly early due to the forecasted temperatures if 36 degrees, I don’t know..
i was walking up behind a couple of girls and heard one say that her shoulders were hurting from her rucksack.. the other girl replied that they’d only hurt for two weeks because after that God would have deemed her worthy from her struggle.. I missed the reply, but it didn’t sound like she was too happy to have to wait two weeks!!
Weather was perfect for walking at 8am but did gradually get warmer and warmer, although there was quite a bit in the shade which was very welcome.. again spent the first hour and a half passing people.. keep waiting for a judge to jump out with a red paddle and accuse me of cheating 😳.. having said that, going through a biggish town before Pamplona all rucksacks ahead seemed to vanish and I kept worrying I’d gone wrong 😑
Made it to Pamplona in really good time, but then found out that my accommodation was 1 - 1.5 km away from the route.. big panic 😱 how do I find it.. bigger panic.. how will I find my way back to it on Monday morning 😬worked the first part out, but no idea if I will in the morning ..
Needless to say I arrived too early to check in.. so a beer and bite to eat it was!!
The hotel tonight is way bigger and posher than any of the others, but I definitely prefer them as they were much friendlier and Camino orientated.. I was a tad uncomfortable turning up at this one with a pack on my back!!
Off for my evening meal now.. can’t believe I couldn’t eat here before 8, that’s nearly my bed time 🥱 hope there’s something I like as I’m starving.. buenos noches..

    • Pamplona-Where the Bulls Run!

      September 2, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Over and over again, I see the kindness of strangers. A woman I met from Brisbane, Australia was having a very difficult time with the travel and the backpack. A sweet couple from California first offered to divide up some of her backpack, only to discover she couldn’t carry it. So, Craig carried it about
5-7 km for her. It was hot, sunny, and an overall exhausting hike.
We arrived in Pamplona—-I showered, repacked and went to find food.
The toughest is that bars, restaurants close at 2pm for siesta and don’t serve food until 8pm, all I want to do is eat and go to bed.
Another big day ahead tomorrow. I slept in this cubicle. I actually liked that it helped with not hearing the snorers and for privacy.
      Puenta la Reina tomorrow.
