      Laredo to Guemes, Spain

      10 september 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

Another crazy difficult day! We clocked another 30Km day! No blisters for Holly and I yet, we have a system that’s working for us and we are sticking with it. Toe socks with Darn Tough Merino socks on top. I know it sounds overkill, but it has worked for me for years and I’m so glad Hollys feet are happy with it too.
Today was pretty cool. We all walked a few kilometers and then had to take quick 10 minute ferry across and start hiking again. We did have a pretty scary little stretch from one end of the beach where we hiked straight up, very technical, no room for slipping. At one point I was on all fours dropping my foot placement just perfectly in order to make the next step. I also thought having poles were not a good idea and quickly realized that I definitely needed them to plant to test the ground before stepping. Before we headed up a local said it was very dangerous and that the trail slips away sometimes, so to be very careful. He wasn’t over exaggerating!! What made it more difficult was a group of like 8 who were older, not hikers, painted toe nails in sandals trying to maneuver in front of us. No place to pass. They were on a little day trip we think. We had 30k to knock out and they mine as well been in walkers they were going so slow. One fell, saw a couple other dirty butts, so they did too, I assume, but they were taking forever and it was so hot. We were getting a little anxious and finally Nathalie (of course she did!) shouted, “Hey move over, we have a long ways to go today”. A man shouted back “They are elderly, be patient” and she replied, “I’m not patient, come on”. Then she started saying “beep beep beep coming through on the right”, God I love this girl!! She made her point, got through the masses, and then they got a clue and moved over for several others that needed through. It was tough!! Really tough. I’m not sure why they were on that hill. A lot of other pilgrims took the road route because of the danger of falling off or slipping and getting injured. We made our way down to this huge beach and we walked for about 3 or 4km on it before getting back on a trail. I’ve never spent much time on the beaches in Spain..and coming from a puritanical society in the USA, I was a little taken back by what I saw! We were strolling along in our sexy hiking cloths, dripping in sweat, while families with kids and dogs, and couples young and older were enjoying their Sunday afternoon. I always notice dogs first and then the people they are with. I was checking out this dog playing around and here comes an older couple strolling along and they were naked. His stuffs just swingin, hers too, and it’s so natural for them. All I could think of was at least put some sunscreen on? Wouldn’t want all those parts getting burned!! I noticed it the first day in San Sebastián too. Women topless sun bathing. Such confidence! Here I was hotter than heck and I thought about taking my shirt off, soaking it in the water and then putting it back on but didn’t want to flash anyone with my bra!! Seriously! We come from a very different place, indeed. However I could do without seeing anymore old dingers swinging around.
After we got through that stretch we walked through town and found the yellow arrows again that would lead us to Guemes. A lot of road walking after that. We were getting rummy and a little giggley. We were walking down this street and this younger man was walking towards us. He had nothing on but shorts that were tucked into the built in underwear. And I said ‘Here comes another naked man”. We all started laughing so hard. He must’ve felt so small after passing us because we were all losing it.
We finally made it to our destination, Holly and I got our own private room, a lady washed our clothes and delivered them to our rooms. I had a shower and then a nice relaxing bath. It was perfect for the muscles!! Then Holly and I went for a lovely dinner at the place attached to this Posada. Unbelievably wonderful. Best meal yet on the Camino.
It’s 11:30 now & need to get some rest. ❤️

      Invited for lunch

      24 mei 2022, Spanje ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

When we were looking for a restaurant that was supposed to be good and also open according to Google, we stumbled upon another Camino miracle. We asked a lady outside her home where the restaurant was, and she told us the restaurant was closed. We talked to her for a little bit and viewed the chapel on the same property. Then she asked if we were hungry and would want to come in because she had prepared lunch. We accepted the invitation and we were served a three course meal accompanied with wine. We talked to the lady, her grandson and later also to one of her sons who joined the kitchen table.
The stories were great, the location 'El Palacio de Bueño' even greater and the experience the best. This was a birthday lunch we will never forget.

      6. Etappe von Noja nach Santander

      24 mei 2022, Spanje ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

      Feeling Froggy - Carpe Diem

      9 mei, Frankrijk ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Final day of R-N-R in Biarritz. We woke up early to a dense sea fog, a common thing around here due to the Pyrenees mountains meeting the sea. After breakfast we met Alan, our local guide for a private tour of his hometown, learning about the history, culture, and geology of the region plus a sprinkle of spirituality, philosophy and folklore.

The rest of the day was spent enjoying the sun, scenery and spa amenities at the hotel - pool, sauna, hammam, and beach while Trina went on her own adventure exploring the town and coming back with snacks and wine to have a happy hour picnic on our balcony. We concluded the day with a sunset stroll along the shore to find Trina some seafood.

We depart for St Jean PDP tomorrow to prepare for "the real" journey ahead. We are getting weather reports of rain all the way to Pamplona for our first days on the Camino. Not ideal, but it is what it is. So, we decided to "Basque" in the sunshine today.

      Carpe diem.

      We landed! Biarritz

      7 mei, Frankrijk ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Welp! We got super lucky 🍀 and got to the gate as they announced gate closure. We were eating lunch in Atlanta and didn’t realize boarding began and hour before departure not 30 minutes. EEK!!😱

They poured us big wine cups 🍷 on the plane!

We landed in Paris and quickly hopped the transfer to Biarritz. The ride to the quaint beach town that has big waves and awesome surfers was quick and easy. 25 euros for the cab ride.

We walked around to see the ocean views, grab a bite, french wines and window shopped some artisan chocolates. Amy teaching me French! 🇫🇷

Once our room was ready we took naps and enjoyed the view from our room.

We went to the spa and went swimming in the heated pool. The hotel had an indoor and outdoor pool, hot steam sauna.

Looking to use some of the gym and spa services for body treatments while we acclimate to time change and get her out jet lag.

      Au revoir, Biarritz! 🇫🇷

      10 mei, Frankrijk ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Yesterday was our last full day. We had a lovely breakfast at the hotel. Fresh raw salmon, croissant, De Gateau Basque (it’s kinda like a custard and cake pie, very good) fresh juices cappuccino and fried eggs the French way. I mention the breakfast because it was very different than what I would get at hotel in the states.

We took a walking tour with Allan, a local Basque man. He explained a little history and climate change.

I left the tour before it ended to enjoy a massage at the hotel, saltwater pool swim and hot steam sauna.

Afterwards, I walked up the coast to see the view and thought I could get a good snack. However, I didn’t realize that every restaurant & cafe is closed at 2pm and doesn’t re-open until 7:30pm. I walked around and found the cafes full with people slowly sipping a glass of wine or lemonade bubble water and no food served.

As the clouds and fog lifted I saw the Pyrenees mountains in the background of the gorgeous views. I thought about what that will be like walking up those big beasts. I said don’t think about it just do it. Zoom in on the pictures and you can see the mountains.

Some of the places I stopped on my walk were the church Sainte-Eugénie Church of Biarritz. It is big and beautiful.

Plage du Port Vieux, an ocean pool where sunbathers come to relax with out having rough water if the open sea.

Playa De Biarritz. A swiming and surfing beach.

I was pretty hungry by the time 6:30pm and found a small custard dessert shop that sold these tiny custard balls, a tiny store that sold wine, chorizo, cheese, bread and canned pate’. I bought it and brought it to the hotel for a snack before dinner. Food is non-existent during the closed hours. I focused on the scenery and found the oasis of the dessert shop and small neighborhood store.

Met up with Amy and walked back over to the warf and had a nice dinner for sunset with some local oysters and razor back clams and local white wine. The sun set around 9:45pm.

We stumbled on a tiny nightclub about 1,000 sq ft. Had one drink and danced to Crystal Waters - gypsy! Fun!

Earlier in the day Allan our tour guide spoke about desire. He said if you desire what you don’t have you will always suffer And if you do get what you desire, it is only temporary. Attachment is not the way to live life. Detachment with love, appreciation and gratitude is to live life. Be here in the now and desire what you have.

On our last night in Biarritz I started feeling loss. Feeling how sad it was we were leaving this nice “ comfortable “ situation. I was attached to the comfort and certainty of this situation. Resisting what was ahead and unknown. Then I went and remembered the conversation with Allan and shifted my thinking to how great it was that I got to spend three days here and take care of my body with Sauna and pool. Sample French & Basque culture. Swim in the ocean on the other side of the world.

No loss, no sadness of leaving this place. Only happiness I got to experience it.

Today we pack up and head to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France 🇫🇷 to prepare of our walk on the El Camino De Santiago. I squeezed in an ocean cold plunge, hot sauna
