      Day in Basel, Switzerland

      Today, in Basel, we walked around the old city using an app with a feature where it would bring up an audio recording whenever you walked past a significant sight on the walking route. Following that we spent the afternoon at the Basel Zoo. It’s not located far from our hotel and we were given a free transit pass by our hotel that we can use for all public transit, including to the airport tomorrow. The Basel Zoo has a very impressive collection of animals in well designed enclosures. We saw all kinds of wildlife including rhinos, a lion, a silverback gorilla, hippos, giraffes, zebras … monkeys, chimps, orangutans.

      Not going out for dinner today. Found a good little grocer near the hotel and bought salads. Also bought a beer for later tonight in our comfy hotel room! We did go for an added little walk to see the city Rathaus after we finished our dinners. Really enjoyed exploring the Old City of Basel.      Read more

      Day 12

      Basel to Zagreb

      Today we leave Switzerland for Croatia. But we don’t need to leave for the airport until noon.

      We started the morning with coffee from our in-room machine and food we picked up at a local supermarket yesterday. After making lunches and checking out of our hotel room we made our way on-foot to the Basel Kunstmuseum (Art). We were able to leave our luggage in the hotel.

      It was our first museum visit and we looked forward to the visit, having heard good things about it. We were able to use our Basel tourist pass to get in for 1/2 price. It’s a large museum organized by time periods. We started our tour looking at very old paintings from the 1500’s to around the 1800’s. Then finished by viewing 20th century art. I was surprised to see that the museum housed a large number of pieces by well known artists such as Picasso. We had a couple of hours in the museum and got to see a lot of interesting pieces.

      It was very easy to get from our hotel to the airport by bus. Only had to walk 1/2 a block to the first bus and the second bus picked us up right where the first dropped us off. We are now waiting to board our plane to Zagreb. It’s scheduled to arrive 30 mins. late.

      Plane finally flew almost an hour late. Got great seats with more legroom than I’ve ever had on a flight! That’s because we were in line with the emergency exits. On arrival in Zagreb we got lucky and found our way to where a shuttle bus was heading from the airport to the city bus station. From there it was short tram ride and walk to our apartment.

      It felt good to arrive at our next destination. But we had to go out and buy some food because we are going on a full day bus trip to a national park leaving early tomorrow morning and we want food for both breakfast and lunch. We found a nice grocer near by and were happy to see that prices were much lower than in Basel. We also noticed that a restaurant right outside our apartment has margarita pizza on the menu for a good price. So, after unloading our groceries that’s where we went for dinner. We both ordered the margarita pizza. We enjoyed both the food and the lively atmosphere on the street. I also really enjoyed the local, Croatian beer I had with my pizza.      Read more

      Westweg Etappe 13

      Heute ist es soweit, heute beende ich den Westweg in Basel.
      Ich besorgte mir erstmal im Ort ein kleines Frühstück und startete dann durch die Wutachschlucht in den Tag. Es ging durch kleine Ortschaften und Felder sowie Wald zur Burg Rötteln bei Lörrach. Dort holte ich mir am Westwegtor den letzten Stempel ab. Es folgte nochmal ein Anstieg zum Tüllinger Berg, wo ich meine letzte Pause bei schönstem Panorama machte. Die Wolkendecke von heute morgen hatte sich zum Glück geöffnet, sodass sich der blaue Himmel und die Sonne zeigten. Schon bald stand ich oberhalb von Weil am Rhein auf dem Rebberg und stieg bis an den Fluss Wiese ab. Basel war nun schon sehr gut sichtbar. Die letzten 5 km läuft man ständig geradeaus an der Wiese entlang bis man am Tierpark "Lange Erlen" landet. Dort kann man auf dem letzten Abschnitt noch die Tiere beobachten bevor es dann Richtung Bahnhof geht, dem offiziellen Ende des Westweges.

      Das war nun also der Westweg. 300 km durch den Schwarzwald, von Nord nach Süd. Für mich war es der bis jetzt schönste Fernwanderweg den ich je begangen bin. Die wunderschöne Natur, die vielen Menschen die man kennenlernt, sehr viele Erlebnisse, ob gut oder schlecht, das macht für mich das Fernwandern aus. Das bekommt man alles trotz oder gerade weil man sehr minimalistisch lebt. Alles was man braucht trägt man auf dem Rücken mit sich und wenn man nicht viel hat, dann legt sich der Fokus auf viele Kleinigkeiten, die im Alltag oft untergehen.      Read more

      Ziel erreicht.

      So Ihr Lieben,
      ich habe dann mal heute vorgelegt und mit Töchterchen Juliana und Schwiegermama Edeltraud die letzten 11 km der letzten und 12. Etappe von Lörrach nach Basel in strammen 3 Stunden gelaufen. Das Wetter war super und der Weg war wider Erwarten an der Wiese (Fluss in Basel) entlang recht schön.

      My route is ready!

      Yeah, it took me a while to decide for Costa Rica.

      For a long time I wanted to drive by truck 🚛 through Central Asia. I've been thinking back and forth with Frank and Lech for a long time. For this tour we need at least 10 people, otherwise the long drive and the fuel is not worth it.

      At the beginning of 2022 nothing came of it because the trip through Ukraine was out of the question due to the war there. Then in autumn 2022 the second plan was to drive there across the Black Sea 🌊, but then the Russian fleet moved there.

      This fall we planned to drive round the Turkish coast of the Black Sea but we didn't get enough people together. Long story short, I came up with an alternative. 😍

      A road trip through Chile came into consideration, from Tierra del Fuego to the Atacama desert, but 3 weeks wasn't enough and Peru was just a bit too touristy for me.

      That's how I stumbled across Costa Rica and I'm going to cruise through there by bus. So tadaaaaa this it is: Costa Rica! And this is my route ❤️.      Read more

      I tend to repeat myself.: I simply love ❤️ it since I was young (except after the Sandoz accident in 1986).

      Day 2

      Basel

      Heute folgen wir dem alten Rhein, größtenteils auf Schotter, Richtung Basel.
      Zuerst erreichen wir die Isteiner Schwellen, die letzten Überbleibsel eines ehemaligen Jura Massivs, heute ein beliebtes Naherholungsgebiet. Anschließend ergreifen wir am Wehr Märkt, das nicht nur eine wesentliche Rolle bei der Hochwasserregulierung spielt, sondern auch seit 1932 das Wasser in den Grand Canal d’Alsace mit seinen 4 Wasserkraftwerken weiterleitet, die Gelegenheit, das erste mal per Fahrrad nach Frankreich einzureisen.
      In Weil am Rhein legen wir eine Pause ein, bevor wir nach der Überquerung der Dreiländerbrücke zum zweiten Mal einen Kurztrip nach Frankreich unternehmen.
      Der Grenzübergang zur Schweiz liegt im Hafengebiet, hier wird man leider teilweise auf Straßen geführt. In die Altstadt gelangt man über die Mittlere Rheinbrücke. An heißen Tagen, wie heute, verpackt man hier seine sieben Sachen in wasserdichte Rucksäcke und lässt sich zur Abkühlung eine Zeit lang im Rhein treiben.
      Ein sehr freundlicher Polizist auf dem Fahrrad, weist uns den Weg zur Fußgängerzone und rettet uns damit an einem Verkehrsknotenpunkt vor den Straßenbahnen, die hier wohl im Minutentakt zu fahren scheinen.
      Wir lassen uns treiben, schauen uns das Wahrzeichen der Stadt, das rote Rathaus aus dem 16. Jahrhundert an, anschließend besuchen wir das Münster mit dem Grabmal des niederländischen Gelehrten Erasmus und den Tinguely-Brunnen. Bei der Hitze nehmen wir noch ein Kaltgetränk in der Standbar, die wohl das Ziel des „menschlichen Treibgutes“ zu seien scheint.
      Im Hafen entdecken wir eine überraschend andere Seite von Basel, bevor es, vorbei am Vitra Campus, wieder zurück zum Campingplatz geht.      Read more

      Back in Basel

      Nachdem wir die Gruppe verabschiedet haben, sind wir zum Bahnhof und wieder in Basel - vertraut, als ob wir gestern hier gewesen waren 😅 Erst einmal die Apotheke geplündert ( Stützstrümpfe bei 28° wollte ich schon immer mal tragen) und ab ins stylische Arthouse Hotel.

      Heute ist Schlendern angesagt und um 18.00 Uhr Treffen mit Loti und Gianni in Weil. Es war ein super Abend mit Rückfahrt in einem stylischen Taxi 🚖      Read more

      A Basilea fui dos veces de visita durante mi intercambio, y ya sé por qué. ¡Es carísimo todo! Si quitamos eso, es una ciudad limpísima, con mucha organización, con tranvías y coches eléctricos y tiendas únicas. El museo natural es gratis la última hora, y Unai disfrutó de lo lindo. La señora de la entrada nos regaló un dulce típico, que en Francia se llama ahora “Boules”. Todo un detalle cuando supo de nuestro viaje. Volvemos en tren agotados, después de una tarde más en la intensidad de Unai. Izei 🧡 tranquilito cada momento del día.Read more
