      Tag 151

      October 20, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

      Floating along in Basel

      July 21, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Today we woke up, packed up our stuff and headed for a coffee at the much talked about Olives for a morning coffee. Olives was this small but cute little cafe that Liisa found and seems to be the biggest fan of. I enjoyed the coffee but Liisa and Kate later revealed they werent the biggest fans.
We then drove to Basel to meet Giulia! The drive was fine but the city driving and finding parking was a nightmare. We made it after some stressful moments for ol Georgia and then we walked to Giuls house. It was so great to see her! Her apartment was so nice and spacious. She had made brunch for us and we all sat and chatted. Next we walked through the town, seeing all the nice buildings and headed along the river. We then packed all our stuff into a wet bag and jumped into the Rhine. We floated along for about 30 minutes which is something the locals regularly do. It was so cool to see the town by water and the temperature was actually so nice.
We dried off, then got a gelato which was delicious. We all walked back to Giuls house, then I stayed with Giuls while the others headed to check in and explore. Giuls and I caught up some more, watched some trash tv and she cooked dinner for me. It was a lovely chill afternoon. Then I got back to the apartment and played bananagrams with the girls. It sounded like they had a great day too!

      Drinking our way through Basel

      July 22, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Today we woke up, had some brekky and ventured in to Basel to meet Giuls for coffee and a donut. The donuts were different but good and then Liisa, Kate and Erin also got a little salami sandwich on the side at the little markets that were running in the main square. Next we walked back to Giuls house and jumped in the car to head to the Tierpark which was a free mini zoo!
There were heaps of animals including 3 different goat enclosures, monkeys, 'wild' cats, bison and reindeer. We loved the monkeys. One came right in front of us and was staring right at Giulia. He had his arms folded and looked so so human. One other was trying to crush something and was really throwing his back into it. We all loved the Tierpark.
Then it was time to say goodbye to Giulia and she dropped us back by the river. It was sad to see her go, but I know we'll see each other again. We walked down by the river in search of a bevvy and sat at a table overlooking the river. It was beautiful. We then headed back into town and had a grocery store lunch and a beer which was actually exactly what we all wanted. Took that to the river to eat as well.
Next we went on a walking tour around Basel old town and learnt about the city. From basilisks that guard the city, to a man who they thought 'discovered the town' (not true) but did a naked (magic mike) dance for Cleopatra (maybe true). Along the way, we saw a lost child and guided his mother to find him and ended with a sweet treat from Basel. I somehow ended up holding the plate for the guide...
Then we went to have a spritz drink on the river bur first discovered the Basel Tattoo was on which explains why we'd seen lots of bagpipes and bands all weekend. We enjoyed a spritz and then headed back to the Tattoo 'street' for dinner as they had a variety of stands set up with all different foods. We then walked home but stopped at a brewery right underneath our apartment building. The beers were so good and very Australian craft beer style which is something I've not had in a while. Then we did laundry, played some games and went to bed.

      Basel - Rhein

      July 23, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

      Tag 1:

      Day in Basel, Switzerland

      September 11, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Today, in Basel, we walked around the old city using an app with a feature where it would bring up an audio recording whenever you walked past a significant sight on the walking route. Following that we spent the afternoon at the Basel Zoo. It’s not located far from our hotel and we were given a free transit pass by our hotel that we can use for all public transit, including to the airport tomorrow. The Basel Zoo has a very impressive collection of animals in well designed enclosures. We saw all kinds of wildlife including rhinos, a lion, a silverback gorilla, hippos, giraffes, zebras … monkeys, chimps, orangutans.

Not going out for dinner today. Found a good little grocer near the hotel and bought salads. Also bought a beer for later tonight in our comfy hotel room! We did go for an added little walk to see the city Rathaus after we finished our dinners. Really enjoyed exploring the Old City of Basel.

      Basel to Zagreb

      September 12, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Today we leave Switzerland for Croatia. But we don’t need to leave for the airport until noon.

We started the morning with coffee from our in-room machine and food we picked up at a local supermarket yesterday. After making lunches and checking out of our hotel room we made our way on-foot to the Basel Kunstmuseum (Art). We were able to leave our luggage in the hotel.

It was our first museum visit and we looked forward to the visit, having heard good things about it. We were able to use our Basel tourist pass to get in for 1/2 price. It’s a large museum organized by time periods. We started our tour looking at very old paintings from the 1500’s to around the 1800’s. Then finished by viewing 20th century art. I was surprised to see that the museum housed a large number of pieces by well known artists such as Picasso. We had a couple of hours in the museum and got to see a lot of interesting pieces.

It was very easy to get from our hotel to the airport by bus. Only had to walk 1/2 a block to the first bus and the second bus picked us up right where the first dropped us off. We are now waiting to board our plane to Zagreb. It’s scheduled to arrive 30 mins. late.

Plane finally flew almost an hour late. Got great seats with more legroom than I’ve ever had on a flight! That’s because we were in line with the emergency exits. On arrival in Zagreb we got lucky and found our way to where a shuttle bus was heading from the airport to the city bus station. From there it was short tram ride and walk to our apartment.

It felt good to arrive at our next destination. But we had to go out and buy some food because we are going on a full day bus trip to a national park leaving early tomorrow morning and we want food for both breakfast and lunch. We found a nice grocer near by and were happy to see that prices were much lower than in Basel. We also noticed that a restaurant right outside our apartment has margarita pizza on the menu for a good price. So, after unloading our groceries that’s where we went for dinner. We both ordered the margarita pizza. We enjoyed both the food and the lively atmosphere on the street. I also really enjoyed the local, Croatian beer I had with my pizza.

      Basel

      April 21, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

      Devon to Basle

      May 9, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

(Updated) Started badly coming to a halt after 20 minutes on A38 just before it becomes the M5, fortunately stoppage was only 10 minutes and as usual once moving there was no obvious cause for the jam. Heathrow car park just after 12 and by 1 we were checked in and through security. Plane ready on time, then the normal 45 minutes taxi to the takeoff runway! Arrived Basle, interesting airport half in France and Half Switzerland, ( look for fence in photo, the other side is France), have to be careful which exit you use once you’ve picked up your cases. Short coach ride to ship and efficiently checked in. Only 63 passengers (capacity 168) this trip, partly as early season and partly because crew is short staffed as Ukrainian and Indonesian members have not been able to travel yet. Downside is second “Bistro” restaurant will not be open, ( tonight’s dinner in main restaurant was excellent), upside as compensation we have been given the restaurant drinks package, glad I didn’t advance buy,
The ship is moored in the largest port in Switzerland, there are hundreds of containers a short distance further along the quay side just waiting either to be collected by lorries for distribution within Switzerland or loaded on a commercial barge to travel down the Rhine to France and Germany. Now understand the church we have been looking at during meals is actually in France.

      Mes doux

      January 14, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

      Rhyschwimme

      August 13, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Rhyschwimme: Swimming-in-river-rhine, is a fixed term and this Swiss tradition exists since 1830.

I tend to repeat myself.: I simply love ❤️ it since I was young (except after the Sandoz accident in 1986).

Imagine we would have that water quality in river Elbe in Hamburg, Strandperle 🐚 would be even more famous...
