Day 68. Bodensee, Switzerland to Austria

    October 11, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We stayed at Jugendherberge youth hostel with inclusive breakfast and skrim curtains. We didn't know what time breakfast was but the curtains got us up at first light. It is an amazing bio (eco) friendly hostel run by a young Swiss couple. They work 8 months of the year and close over winter as they can’t afford the heating. Then they have a four month skiing break. The guy spent 18 months in Australia and NZ. He is a chef and he always has vegemite as a breakfast option. The breakfast was the best with natural and goodness options of joghurts, fruit, cereals, mueslis, fresh baked bread, meats, cheeses, juices, coffee, tea and fresh herbal teas. Susie loved it. Ron is still looking for eggs.
So at 9am we were on the road. Mr Google said it was only 48km to Lindau Island: so 3 hours max. We soon learnt that the cycle way and the road way were hardly acquainted.
It took 7 hours. From 9am until 4pm with only a short stop for coffee about 2m over the Austrian border in Gaißau and soup in Berenz. Ah, the relief of Austria prices instead of Swiss. (A glass of orange juice in Switzerland was $15).

The first 2 hours were lovely. Cruising along the railway line with only minor deviations and marvelling at the beauty of Arbon.

    Der Schweiss

    September 15, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

I rode 44 miles through Switzerland to Zürich. The first 30 miles, the scenery was...well...

The final 14 were literally 95% uphill in 90 degree weather.

My last day of riding was supposed to be easy, but

    I forgot.

    It's a bike tour.

    Nothing is easy.

    Day 64. Lake Constance

    October 7, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Today we crossed Lake Constance from Germany to Switzerland. Stefan drove us to Friedrichshafen in Germany where we caught a ferry to Romanshorn in Switzerland then a train to Rorschach and a bus (we missed the reticulated train) up to Heiden for a walk on a trail around Säntis Alpen. The railway station is 800 metres above sea level.
Lake Constance (known as Bodensee in German) is a 63km-long central European lake that borders Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Fed by the Rhine River, it’s composed of 2 connected parts, the Untersee (lower lake) and the larger Obersee (upper lake).

    Day 67a. Insel Reichenau

    October 10, 2019 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

The island is surrounded by fresh water and is a picture of lush tall strong trees, green fields, market gardens, greenhouses and quaint little towns. It is a paradise for healthy living.
The island also has a rich history. We visited St Georg, a Catholic Parish Church built in the 9thC. It was built in the Pre-Romanesque style. The images in the nave of the Church on the sides and on the north and the south wall survived well preserved for centuries. In the year 896 the head of St Georg was buried in the crypt.Read more

    Day 68a. Arbon & Steinach

    October 11, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

The day started cold and misty but clear.
In Arbon we followed the knitting trail along the esplanade where light poles and benches were decorated with knitted covers.
Arbon is a historic town and a municipality and district capital of the district of Arbon in the canton of Thurgau in Switzerland. Arbon is located on the southern shore of Lake Constance, on a railway line between Konstanz/Romanshorn and Rorschach/Chur, or St. Gallen.Read more

Day 67c. Constance to Romanshorn, Swiss

    October 10, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

We cycled into Romanshorn about 3:30pm. The first accommodation we came across was the Ancher for 140 Francs a night. Switzerland is expensive but this was too much for simple accommodation above a restaurant bar. Most places only opened at 5pm so we stopped in the main mall at Franzl Vienna Cafe for a snack. The Austrian owner Tatjana helped us find a room for the night. We decided on Jugendherberge Hostel for 110 Francs for a family room with bathroom. We were tired after 5 hours of cycling and went straight to the hostel.
After a shower we walked into the township for beer, pizza and salad at an Italian Restaurant Da Massimo. This bar opened at 5pm. Most opened at 7pm. Delicious. Just what we needed.

    Im Rutsch 'durch die Schweiz'

    October 10, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

    October 11, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C
