      Buddha Museum

      May 10, 2020 in Taiwan ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

      Lambai island

      November 22, 2019 in Taiwan ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Got on the way for our 3 hour drive at about 10am. We were heading south to get a ferry to the island of Lambai. A small island off the South West coast of Taiwan.
Arrived and got straight on a fast boat, taking 25mins to get to the Island. Scoped out hiring scooters and bicycles, and settled on electric bikes.
The island is only 5k long so doesn't take long to get around. Checked into our accommodation and set off to get some dinner from the shop. Salad, hot dogs, sandwiches, beer, more beer and red wine. Made it down to the coast in time for sunset. I got in a quick drone flight whilst everyone else got the beers going. Shortly after the sun went down, we had to abandon the beach as the mosquitos were forming an organised attack, regardless of the deet.

Had some more food on the balcony overlooking the sea and the stars. Played cards until the bar opened at 8pm. Then proceeded to play pool until 10. Only people in the bar, which was probably quite lucky. At only a pound a beer it was a nice cheap evening.

      Lambai island exploring. Turtles galore.

      November 23, 2019 in Taiwan ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

All finished breakfast by 9.10am! Maybe a heavy booze night makes you feel more awake in the morning. Will have to further test this theory.
Straight to the north west corner to see a big ball rock thing called Vase rock. (Dad called it Chodyknobend rock). Did the usual Le Poidevin move of walking a further 10m to everyone else and having a bit of beach to yourself.
Straight into the water for a dip. A strong current, lovely and warm water with Turtles everywhere. Great visibility. Lovely!
Tried to find a cafe for a while along the coast. Eventually found a coffee shop which made an excellent tuna sarnie and latte float.
Down to another beach for a glorious swim, so warm! Turtles and lion fish. Plus swarms of Chinese people all with life vests on, tied to their leader.
We cruised down the East coast seeing the harbour and more tropical coast line. Everyone here drives motor bikes.
Up to the 7-11 to pick up some more red wine and beers and back to the balcony for sunset and drone flying 😁.
Curly fancied a pizza so we took the bikes along the coast road. Got lost a few times, I asked a random shop were the pizza shop might be and we got some rough directions. Found the Luna pizza van which did fantastic pizza, including a banana and chocolate one for dessert. Yes yes yes!
She gave us some recommendations of what to do on the way home, including looking at flowers which only open at night and crab crossing. Half way to the flower place, my electric battery on my bike died. The bikes are very heavy, and not really suitable for just pedalling. We were not that far from the rental place, so I rode it back there. They then swapped all our batteries just in case.
Loads of night time tourist groups on scooters seeing random sights on our way back. Like hells angels does 50cc tourism. Funny to see.

      Kaohsiung: Countryside Tour

      June 10, 2023 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

Yes, the tour I had arranged was supposed to take us — and six others — to the countryside. And it did. But the itinerary we ended up doing wasn’t what I had booked.

I must admit that I was hugely disappointed — and greatly frustrated — that the guide (Tom) took it upon himself to take us much farther from the port area without consulting with me first. That he did so because he felt this was “better” than what I had booked was no excuse IMHO. He could have easily said so at the time of the booking and presented me with alternatives that I would have gladly considered and made a decision accordingly.

Essentially, our day turned into a lot of driving with a couple of neat 5-minute photo-op stops; a noodle soup lunch (tasty, I will admit) at a local restaurant; and a long drive to a village that wasn’t a village at all.

The change Tom had made was to take us to an “indigenous village.” Turns out that it was a purpose-built cultural center where, if there were any exhibits, we weren’t directed to them. It certainly wasn’t the interactive indigenous experience we expected it to be from his description.

Instead, on arrival at the Indigenous Peoples Cultural Park, we were rushed onto a shuttle bus that took us to a theater where we sat through a half-hour music/dance performance that meant very little to us because we had no idea what we were watching. Afterwards, we ran through the heavy downpour to the shuttle to be returned to the entrance.

After all that — contrary to our instructions to return us to the ship — Tom made brief stops at two of the places on the itinerary. By then, however, there was no time to walk the old iron bridge and enjoy the wetlands ecological park setting; and the tile factory/kiln in the park was more like a gift shop than a manufacturing plant. That we didn’t go anywhere near the “unique” temple the itinerary called for was the crowning disappointment.

Add to all that … the vehicle was a tight fit for eight people (Tom claimed the larger vehicle had developed a mechanical problem and was in the shop) and the A/C was inadequate — especially in the back row. All around a frustrating day.

A terrible shame that this tour was so disappointing since we enjoyed our visit to Kaohsiung on RTW2017 tremendously and were looking forward to our return.

*** Update: After advising Tours by Locals of our disappointing experience, we were given a partial refund on the cost of the tour. It doesn’t change the unsatisfactory tour experience, but it is a consideration we appreciate. And Tom has perhaps learned a lesson about the importance of communicating with the client in the future.

      An unexpected theme park

      November 21, 2019 in Taiwan ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Packed up in our woody Switzerland style chalet on the edge of Sun Moon Lake. Very nice breakfast of mushroom fruit, sausage and boiled egg.
The plan was to walk to the cable car and go to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village.

Cable car gave us some fantastic views over the Sun Moon lake. We walked down the hill being treated to an aboriginal dance and music show. Saw how they used to live in stone huts with wooden carvings everywhere. At the bottom of the hill was a theme park. Not what we were expecting, with big rides. Curly, Hannah and I went on one twice which took you 80m up then dropped you. Great fun.
With almost no one there, we got on and off most of the rides nice and quickly.
At 4pm we took the cable car back up to the top and down to our town. A quick beer to watch the sunset ove the lake and back to change. After an hour back at the hotel, we thought we would learn our lesson by heading out early for food.
No such luck with places closing at 6 all over the place.
One place was almost full so we went in there. Had a set menu for 7 for 5 of us. Lovely food including fried bananas, pepper beef and fish from the Sun Moon Lake. Stuffed! Back for some wine and a 58% bird seed wine to finish the night. Chriiiiiissstt.

      Lambai Island. South Side.

      November 24, 2019 in Taiwan ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Started with a breakfast of chips and pancake with meat and veg. Curly couldn't hack it so made it her mission of the day to find fruit and flavoured ice.
We set off toward a walking path with caves made of coral. Pleasant walk but with sharp pointy rocks. Drove to the East coast for more swimming with turtles. Quite strong tide, so we swam against it and drifted back. Dad found an 'octopus', was in fact a rock...
Cycled to Black Devils Cave, where some Dutch were killed and their slaves freed to live amongst the rocks.
Fantastic ice smoothy, and amazingly intricate wooden carvings. From there went to get some salad lunch and onward to the beach below our accommodation. Big swell coming in. Dad and I went out. I did some body surfing with the camera. You needed to line up with the rows of coral to avoid being sliced on the rocks. Cool and fairly sketchy.
Back for a quick wash up and out to find some dinner.
We cycled to a DIY BBQ. Loads of food in freezers, where you help yourself and cook it yourself. Almost certainly all got food poisoning now, but we will find out tomorrow 😝. Nice and tasty though, but all fully stuffed!

      Kaohsiung: Quake Alert

      June 10, 2023 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

We visited Kaohsiung on RTW2017. So, in looking for something different to do, this time I booked a tour to the countryside. It has been an “adventure” so far.

Haven’t seen much yet, but a presidential notice about an earthquake alert added a “gulp” to our adventure.

No worries … no shaking or rolling. At least not where we are. And the alert has expired, so we are good.

      Fo Guang Shan

      February 19 in Taiwan ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Before our monastery time started we been some days in Kaohsiung, it was nice. We saw André and Wei again, we been shopping, we been out and we had fun. That is all I want to say about it.

And so the monastery time starts!
After a long time without a workaway we are back. The biggest Buddhism monastery in Taiwan and we are here two weeks for volunteering. The work was way easier and way less then we thought before. The most time we been not working so we had time for us. I played a lot of basketball and been walking around while Leon was drawing, drinking tea or leaving to the city.
Typical for a monastery I stoped smoking and drinking for the whole time (was pretty easy)
Normally I am very social but I used the time to be by myself and I liked it. Maybe I was a bit tired of socializing or maybe I was because I been not smoking who knows.

My favorite job was carrying the dragon and I also was the guy that was infront so all the attention was on me and I had lots of photo shootings. The people went crazy when they saw the dragon show, it was really nice to see all these hundreds of people so happy every day.

Now is our time over and in 2 days we fly out of Taiwan. We had an amazing time here, a time we will never forget.

Next post will be from an Arabic country. Peace.

      Fo Guang Shan Kloster

      March 10, 2023 in Taiwan ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

      ###### english ######

The largest Buddha in Taiwan lures near Kaohsiung. About an hour on the public bus, I was alone on it, as was most of the time afterwards. Of course other people warn there, but they get lost in the huge complex.

One of the museum's staff gave me a book on humanistic Buddhism and I learned a lot about the many festivals in Buddhism.

The monastery was even emptier and the least busy was the Great Buddha Land, where there are many golden Buddhas.

      Kenting Crab & Nightlife

      October 14, 2023 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

A lazy day of taking care of myself (with a bit of success, blister on foot almost healed now) strolling on the beach, collecting pieces of coral and seashells, all the while observing the numerous hermit crabs 🦀 in all sizes and house styles. So cute, whenever they felt a vibration in the sand or saw a shadow they stopped movement and pretended to be just a seashell. Later I dined in a Thai restaurant and had some vegetarian Pad Thai... which had shrimps and chicken meat in it 🤔 so vegetarian xD 😆 and then I walked up and down the night market of Kenting Street, amazing how something that looks almost dead by day can turn into vibrant hustle and bustle at night with so many people walking up and down the road from booth to booth, eating, drinking, playing and spending money in all the shops that were closed garage doors before 6 pm. Still I am happy to move on to a big city tomorow, even if I didn't visit the famous old lighthouse of Kenting :-) I can see those at home.

      Google Translate:
