  • Husky Volunteering

    5 September 2015, Jerman ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Unfortunately our lives as Husky dog handlers were short lived.......whilst we LOVED the dogs and didn't mind the work, the countless hours of sitting around, repetitive jobs and lack of appreciation encouraged us to leave early.

Basically our day would start at 7am with the commencement of the first dog run. There were a total of 27 dogs mixed between 7 kennels and each kennel would be released into the yard separately to prevent fights and also protect the dogs on 'heat' from being seduced by the boys. This gave us enough time to clean out the kennels and replace the beds with straw when required.

At 9am it was time for breakfast then we would clean the common areas and bathroom before starting other jobs (stockpiling dry dog food etc). It's 12pm, time for another dog run and add to the ever growing mountain of dog poo.

From 2pm to 4:30pm we would generally have lunch and play cards. There was 5 old dogs who now lived inside and needed someone to keep an eye on them (2 of the were epileptic and 1 had a massive cancer on her belly) so we couldn't really do anything. The only activity outside the farm was a 40 minute walk to the nearest town to buy a beer.

430pm was feeding time and ear plugs were recommended as the dogs loved to express their excitement for eating the same food everyday. It takes a lot longer than you think to feed 27 dogs and wash all the bowls! The last dog run of the day was 7pm and generally didn't last more than an hour as it was getting dark and cold.

The host (Sergeant Ben) has an employee (Christian) who we spend most of the day with and he's a top bloke. He taught us a lot about dog training which was really great but that doesn't make up for all the short falls.

During the colder months the work does become more interesting as the training for sled dog races in Norway starts. Sergeant Ben has a custom training sled and scooters for this task but it would still be a few weeks till it was cool enough not to burn out the dogs. Christian showed us how all the gear worked though which was cool. The closest we got to actually using the gear though was when Travis put the harness on and pretended to drag Suki on the dog scooter.

It was disappointing that we were not allowed in the family's house except for a small kitchenette/common room that didn't have a tap so you have to walk to the bathroom to fill up the tub to wash dishes then empty into the toilet etc. We cooked our own food and ate by ourselves and therefore there was no interaction with the family.. we could hear a lot of yelling going on between the parents and the 2 kids in the main house though so it was probably for the best!

We slept in the world smallest caravan on the other side of the farm which you have to unlock three gates to get there - also annoying. As soon as we arrived we were told we would have a dog sleep with us (his name is First) in the caravan.. "cool!" Suki thought..The catch is he needs full time supervision as he's old, epileptic and poos in his sleep. But having said that we fell in love with him and miss him everyday.

We loved the dogs and their personalities here but unfortunately that doesn't out weight the feeling of being in prison and feeling unappreciated. This is nothing like the volunteering we have done before.

We eventually summed up the courage to confront Sergeant Ben about how we felt and tell him that we're leaving (4 days into our 2 month stint). It actually went better than we expected (he didn't flip out, yell or throw us out) and whilst he was not apologetic he understood where we were coming from and was actually nice to us on our last few days. So we leave with mixed feelings..

First, Pauline, Kazimere, Inuk, Ete, Aiko, Brunick, Alois, Bearcreek, Gipsy, Piki, Puck, Flip, Balto, Willy, Yuna, Jannu, Maya, Boccia, Neiden, Whitey, Joatka, Ranja, Summit, Lotte, Eddie, Joop... We're gonna miss you all! (Except Balto... Still undecided about him!)

  • Amsterdam!

    9 September 2015, Belanda ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

We eventually escaped from husky prison and make a break for Amsterdam.

Its Sukis second time in Amsterdam and Travs first. We spend the first day cycling through the city on fixies- the city is very well equipped for cycling! We head to the local brewery for a few bevvies and wander around the Jordaan and the canals. A great steak for dinner, then off to the popular "Wynard Focker" bar to sample the local liqueur Jenever, and a few of the cocktail concoctions made by all the local liqueurs- our gay bartender Andre is hilarious and gives us loads of free tastings :-) We walk away with 2 bottles of the "Half and Half" liqueur. Then of course the obligatory walk through the red light district to check out the "working girls" in the windows and the numerous coffee shops selling marijuana. Being a Monday night, most of the girls looked quite bored sitting in their windows, although the "sexy librarian" look (high ponytail, glasses, neon underwear) seemed to be the latest fashion trend. There is a lot or stigma attached to Amsterdam, the legal marijuana and the prostitution, but we found those aspects to only form a small part of the city (probably because we didn't partake in either of the above!)

Day 2 we took a day trip out to Zaanse Schans, a cute little village with a bunch of old fashion dutch windmills set along the river. We discover that this must be where old people go to holiday- the average age of most of the tourists we saw must have been over 60! Its a nice walk and we pop into a little cheese factory and take advantage of the free cheese samples.. Yum!

Back to Amsterdam that afternoon and we make a visit to the "Red Light Secrets" museum, which gives us a behind the scenes insight into "the oldest profession in history". It was very interesting actually, and we discover a few cool facts- there are 400 plus windows in the district and the girls pay 150euro per 10hour shift to hire the room. The going rate per visit is 50euro. The average visit lasts just 6 minutes!

Its an early night for us as Trav is feeling a little sick and we have another long travel day ahead of us. We pick up some groceries for dinner and also stumble across the cheapest Hoegaarden beer we have ever seen- normally $20 for a 4 pack in Australia, we pick up a 6 pack here for 3.80euro- Bargain!!

  • Hamburg (Day 1)

    11 September 2015, Jerman ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

It's time for Hamburg and we're excited to be catching up with Ole (a German guy we met when traveling on the Navimag cargo barge through the Chilean Fjords). Ole was kinda enough to let us stay with him at his family home. Ole picks us up late at night from the train station in his Dad's cool BMW work car and takes us for a tour of the harbour (3rd biggest in Europe which is currently lit up with blue lights to celebrate a festival). Back at his house we meet his girlfriend Claudia again and catch up from when we met them last.

It's Friday morning and Ole has to work (Ole is a recently graduated pilot for Lufthansa and is currently working at a huge Airbus factory) but he's given us a good guide of things to do in the city. First stop is the Miniature Wonderland Museum. We originally thought this is for little kids but it blew our minds. Basically it's a massive multiple level exhibition of different European cities with miniature trains, buses, roads, buildings, cable cars and even a Airport with a flight tracking board! The attention to detail is impressive even right down to the lights on the little cars turning on when the ambient lighting fades to embrace the nighttime setting. Truly a remarkable exhibition! Outside we wonder the city streets and walk along the massive festival 'Cruisedays' which has booths setup for the rich nomads looking to book their next cruise. We catch up with Ole at of the ferry stops and have a beer whilst meeting his Grandfather. Opa (German title for Grandad) is 92 years young and looks extremely healthy for his age. Him and Ole catch up atleast once a week for a beer to watch the large ships pass through the harbour.

Ole mates call and invite us to a BBQ at their place so it's time to swing by the supermarket to pick up some fancy meat and plenty of beer. We finish the night off at a local bar with some killer mule cocktails and try not to suffocate with the plumes of smoke flowing through the premise!

  • Hamburg (Day 2)

    12 September 2015, Jerman ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Ole has some business to do so he drops us off in the city to wonder around. There's a protest on about something we don't understand but the most amazing fact is that they have a DJ playing house music in the background - anyway we jump in to take a selfie. We've been putting Ole parents Nespresso machine through its paces so we stumble across a Nespresso shop and realise that they give you free coffees and biscuits! - This is now a daily ritual for us as we put on a show pretending to be interested in buying a fancy machine. We catch up with Ole and his mates for lunch at the Currywrust restuarant.

Ole had planned to take us flying in the Cessna that he rents in the arvo but the approaching heavy clouds forced us to reconsider and instead he took us sailing in the lake in the city - brilliant and hilarious experience with us trying not to crash into other yachts and learning how to avoid getting knocked out by the boom. Ole is a gun as his team has just finished a world title race in Germany last week where his team came 5th! On the way back home we visit the Elb tunnel which is now a redundant cross-river tunnel that open to the public to walk through. Built in 1911 the construction is impressive with multiple lifts to transport the vehicles down. At on 1.9m wide at the base it's a squeeze for any modern day vehicle.

It's getting dark so it's time to knock down a few bevvies and head into town. Ole is a brilliant host and takes us to all the hotspots including the street food market, red light district, 99cent bar and of course a Irish pub to dance the night away ensuring we sample Germany's finest booze along the way.

5am and we stumble to the fish market for an amazing fish burger and watch a massive cruise ship navigate through the harbour. What an incredible night - time for bed

  • Hamburg (Day 3)

    13 September 2015, Jerman ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

It's a slow start and after a few coffees we come back to life. We're off the visit Opa at his apartment and he pulls out a 1977 Atlas to show us where he grew up. We go for a peaceful drive down to the river and sample a raw herring burger followed by Spaghetti Cabonara Icecream (stringy Icecream encasing frozen cream with egg liquor on top)!

Back home we meet Ole parents who have been saving in Norway over the weekend and his girlfriend Claudia returns from visiting family. It's time for Suki to turn on her magic as she whips up a monster Curry! It's a great dinner and afterwards Ole's parents pull out an old school film slide projector and share some pic of their 1996 trip to Australia.

We say goodbye to Opa as we drop him back at his apartment and are so grateful to meet him. We take a detour via the autobanh on the way home and manage to max out his old mans BMW at 210km/h and still get overtaken by a Merc - plus its raining!!!

It's getting late and tomorrow we move on to Berlin. It's been an incredible weekend and Ole's hospitality has been remarkable. To finish off the night we knock back a few shots of the Wyand Focknick liquor we brought him from Amsterdam.

  • Berlin

    16 September 2015, Jerman ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

Berlin here we come! Its a slow start as we are a little dusty after our big weekend in Hamburg. We quickly discover though that Berlin is a much more culturally diverse and edgier city than Hamburg... We only saw 2 Porches the whole time we were here (as opposed to one at every street corner in Hamburg)! Our apartment in Neukolln is great- an artistic gem full of eclectic furniture and art, with the added bonus of being 5min walk to the old Templehof airport runway (now converted into a free public outdoor space) which turned out to be awesome and one of our favorite places in the whole city!

Ole and Claudia gave us some great tips for places to visit while we were here... We did our best to squeeze it all in to 3 days. We are not history buffs in any way however it was very fascinating learning about the history of the Berlin wall, visiting the monument and seeing the divide between east and west of the city. We also did a day trip out to Potsdam, a lovely little town where Claudia is from, to check out the famous castles there and also have a delicious lunch at "Chi Keng" Japanese restaurant.

Berlin was also a landmark moment for us as we both bought new shoes and said goodbye to our severely deteriorated hiking boots which had been with us every step of the way on our round the world journey... Goodbye boots!!

  • Off to Krakow.. I mean Warsaw!

    17 September 2015, Polandia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Its an 8 hour bus ride from Berlin as we head to our next destination.. Warsaw. Its only on the bus however that Suki realised we didn't actually want to go to Warsaw.. we wanted to go to Krakow.. and that Krakow and Warsaw are not the same place.. Doh! It turned out to be a blessing in disguise though, as Warsaw turned out to be a beautiful and historic place... Made awesome by our wonderful host Renata, the kindest, warmest and most giving soul we have met on our travels.

We arrive late on Thursday night and Renata greets us into her beautiful home. Its late but she insists we eat cake. We wake up the next morning and Renata has left for work but she has left us a delicious breakfast and a long handwritten note with suggestions of things to do for the day and lots of interesting facts. Renata's cute little dog Wonton is scheduled for surgery this weekend, you can tell Renata is worried about him but still takes the time to make sure we are ok. She asks us what we wanted to do in Warsaw and we say, "Drink Vodka!" So she offers to make us dinner on Saturday night with Vodka matching foods! We are stoked to say the least :-)

  • Warsaw (Day 1)

    18 September 2015, Polandia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Day 1 in Warsaw we spend at the beautiful "Kazienki Park"- the summer residence of the last king of Poland. Known for his many love affairs, his "mistress house" is very conveniently located only several hundred meters from the main palace! The park is beautiful and we end up spending a lot of time trying to entice the friendly red squirrels to eat out of our hand.. they weren't too interested when they found out we were offering banana and leftover sandwich though!

Off for a wander through Old Town next.. although Old Town is not actually that old.. approximately 85% of it (and the rest of Warsaw) had to be rebuilt following the "Warsaw Uprising" in 1944 (more on this later). It is very well done and very beautiful though.. having restored all the original architecture. When we look closely we think we can see some bulletholes in walls the original buildings.. could just be drill holes though! The sunset lights up the old town in a spectacular fashion, and we are even treated with a rainbow appearing above the square!

Getting hungry now we head to the Polish restaurant "Zapiecek" to sample some local fair. Its a chain restaurant, but very traditional and highly recommended. We were not disappointed! We tried the local dish "Bigos"- a stew type thing with meat, sauerkraut and mushrooms.. it comes with a shot of Vodka as an aperitif! And of course we had to sample a variety of "Pierogi"- Polish dumplings. The mushroom ones were our favorite. And all of this washed down with a giant glass of Sangria and 4 shots of vodka- blue Curacao-lemon cocktails. All this for less than $40aud for the whole meal... Loving Poland so far!

  • Uprising Museum

    19 September 2015, Polandia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

The Warsaw Uprising museum deserves its own post as it is so sad and we also learned a lot about the history of WW2 from it. Its a great museum and we were warned beforehand that it is quite sombering.

As part of WW2, the Polish Resistance attempted to liberate Warsaw from Nazi Germany by staging the resistance now known as Warsaw Uprising. The resistance lasted 2 months (August - October 1944) until the Polish finally surrendered. Approximately 16,000 army and 200,000 Polish civilians were killed during the Uprising. After the surrender, the Germans came in and destroyed almost all of what was left of Warsaw. By 1945 85% of Warsaw was left in ruins.

We also learnt about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943. In 1939, German occupational authorities began to concentrate Poland's population of over three million Jews into a number of extremely crowded ghettos located in large Polish cities. The largest of these, the Warsaw Ghetto, concentrated approximately 300,000–400,000 people into a densely packed, 3.3 km² central area of Warsaw. Thousands of Jews died due to rampant disease and starvation even before the mass deportations from the Ghetto to the Treblinka extermination camp began. The Jewish were told they were being transported to eastern labour camps- 7000 Jews a day. It took 2 months for the Jewish resistance to realise the Jews were actually being taken to extermination camps, and that's when the Ghetto Uprising began. The uprising last less than 1 month, until the Jewish resistance failed and the entire ghetto was liquidated by the Germans :-( Between the extermination camp and the uprising, over 350,000 Jews were killed.

It was very sobering to learn of Poland's part of WW2. Poland suffered the biggest losses of life out of all the countries in WW2- The death toll is estimated at 6.3 million (total death toll resulting from WW2 is 72 million- the biggest cataclysm in all of mankind). Very very sad and not something we think about often.

  • Warsaw Day 2

    19 September 2015, Polandia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

When we wake up Wonton has been taken to the vet for his operation and Renata is clearly worried about him. Fortunately the vet calls to give the all ok- Hurray!

We are excited about our Polish dinner Renata is going to prepare us tonight! Keen to contribe a little we offer to buy the Vodkas and dessert. We head to the supermarket in search of "Wyborowa" Wodka- reknown to be the best in Poland. Travis gets completely carried away and we walk out with 1 bottle of original and 3 small bottles of flavoured wodka- Lime, Ginger and Citrus.

Shopping complete, we head to the "Warsaw Uprising Museum" for a bit of history.. see separate post regarding the museum. After the museum we stop for a much needed beer and head down to the Old town again to check out some of the "secret spots" we missed last night following Renatas recommendation. Being a Saturday, the atmosphere is great, with many street performers out entertaining the masses.

We eventually head home to find Renata and her boyfriend Radec cooking up a storm.. it is a feast! We are treated to many amazing dishes, including the "raw mince thing with onions and pickles" (so good), Radecs special Herring recipe (2 varieties!), Radecs mums mushrooms in a jar (not sure about this one!), crusty bread, salami sticks, beetroot and goats cheese salad (sooo yumm), homemade pickled cucumber, potato crepes with salmon, and finally tiramisu for dessert. All washed down with copious amounts of wine and vodka... Needless to say everyone got a bit merry, with all of the vodka consumed (yes all 4 bottles), Travis passing out and Suki having very vague memory of the last 2 hours of the evening. Apparently we were up till 2am, at which point we just disappeared.. leaving the entire evening mess for Renata and Radec to clean up... Sorry guys! We had so much fun!

  • Warsaw Day 3

    20 September 2015, Polandia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We wake up feeling extremely rough after last night's drinking.

We finally drag ourselves out of bed and head to the outlets as planned for the day.. as soon as we arrive we hit a wall and want to go home. In our hungover state we also foolishly spend our last polish dollars on chocolate instead of food.

We get back to the apartment and Renata and Radec are home. Renata kindly makes us lunch because we were too hungover to look after ourselves.

We have a late overnight bus to wait for and spend the entire evening hanging out at Renatas place even though we were meant to "check out" that morning. We learn a lot more about Renata and discover not only is she a wonderful person, knows a lot about history and is a translator, she is also amazingly artistic and talented.. she designs clothes and wedding dresses! And renovated her apartment!

We feel a little sad to be leaving but also so grateful to have met Renata and made a wonderful new friend. Renata even gives Suki a parting gift- a beautiful charm bracelet and special bookmark- Suki is so touched! We really hope she comes to visit us in Australia!

  • Prague

    22 September 2015, Republik Ceko ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

The bus is late again........but this seems to be the happening thing in Europe. This time it was an overnight from Warsaw to Prague taking about 11 hours. Trav was not impressed that his fancy TV screen was broken but we both managed to get some sleep after knocking back some melatonin.

There was a random security check just inside the Czech Republic border where we had to dismount from the bus with our luggage and stand a line for the sniffer dogs. Suki's bag got picked out and then half heartedly searched by a police officer probably trying to top up his weed stash.

Checked into our Airbnb room which was a little like a hostel with the amount of rooms however the location and proximity to the old town was brilliant.

After a nap from the limited sleep on the bus we set off to explore. First stop was a picturesque rooftop bar overlooking the old town as the sun set in the background. With great tasting cheap beer it was hard to leave although for dinner we took a short walk through the old town and had a massive pork knuckle to share for dinner at a 500 year old brewery.

The next day we walked to the otherside of the river and explored the magnificent castle area and did a small hike to get up one of the surrounding hills which hosts a Eiffel Tower replica. On the way home we walked along the famous Charles bridge watching the tour boats and paddle boats navigate the river below.

It's only been a short stay but we've loved Prague and the price of food and beer here makes everything a little more special.

  • Budapest

    25 September 2015, Hungaria ⋅ 🌫 15 °C

Bus to Hungary! Despite being 1hr late the bus to Budapest was actually the nicest one we've been on yet (run by "Student Agency"). It was complete with tv screens, headphones, leather reclining seats, a stewardess and free tea and coffee.. Not bad 18 euro each! Bus experts now, the 8 hours actually passed very quickly.

In a nutshell, Budapest was nice but didn't live up to expectations. Pros: It was easy to get around and people seems a bit friendlier than in Prague and Warsaw. We walked across Chain Bridge, visited the castle and the Fishermans Bastion, which was good and had some great views. Sat on the edge of the Danube river with some cheese and wine to capture the sun set. Checked out a "Ruin Pub", Szimpler Kert, which was actually very cool. It was raining on the second day so we made the most of it and head to Gellert Spa for some thermal pools and steam room soaking which was very relaxing.

The negatives would be that some areas were quite touristy. The food wasn't that great.. all the good bread, cheese and wine is gone! Our meals out were kinda average. Also, probably more concerning is that there was pee on the street.. EVERYWHERE. Literally. There was a puddle of pee every 5- 10m. We witnessed the peeing in progress more than once. Big puddles, little puddles... Pee EVERYWHERE.

Nonetheless, we enjoyed staying in our cosy little apartment and it was still worthwhile checking it out :-)

  • Back to Bad Gastein!

    30 September 2015, Austria ⋅ 🌙 0 °C

Austria here we come! We journey back west towards Austria... Feeling extremely posh as we have upgraded ourselves to taking the train instead of bus! We arrive in Salzburg and encounter our first experience with the Syrian refugee crisis- there are police everywhere and a medical tent set up outside the station.

Bad Gastein is a beautiful little ski village about 1.5 hours south of Salzburg. It is not ski season but we are heading there to visit Sukis friends Thijs and Elke- Thijs owns an 8 apartment chalet there and Suki worked for him for a ski season 5 years ago... Such great times and memories!

Thijs is away the night we arrive so he sends Edwin, his new helper, to pick us up from the station. Edwin is Dutch and has been at the chalet for 3 months- very interesting guy! Its currently off season and Edwin hasn't had any guests for a few weeks- you can tell because he's very eager to have a chat! Several bottles of oversized wine later its 1am and Travis declares its time to go to bed :-P

The evening sets the precedent for our next 5 nights here, as we spend the days going on walks around the beautiful mountainside (including a trip up to Sportgastein) and the nights drinking lots and lots of wine.

We make a camp fire out the front of the chalet on night 2 (Trav has got his fire mojo back!), Thijs turns up and we spend an amazing evening catching up, drinking wine and cooking meat on the fire. We burn a book at one point (long story!).

Night 3 is a much needed night off so we have a quiet night in.

Day 4 we head to Thijs and Elkes place to test out the Laser Tag equipment!!! We set up a game of capture the flag in the front and back yard.. lots of fun! The technology has really improved since we were kids... The guns have scopes and everything! A few games of this and we are puffed and in need of a drink. We head out for dinner at the new pizzeria in town which Elke has part ownership of. The evening ends in us dancing in the restaurant after all the other customers have left, then having a jam session at Thijs and Elkes place afterwards on the drums and bongos- Travis shows some impressive skills on the drums while Suki displays her tone deafness on the bongos. All in all another great night!

We end our stay at Chalet Gastein with a quiet camp fire on Day 5, a bit more wine and learning about Edwins interesting life. Its been a great stay and we hope everyone will visit us in Oz next :-)

  • Oktoberfest (Day 1)

    2 Oktober 2015, Jerman ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

The traffic across the border into Germany from Austria was crazy. With strong border controls in place due to the refugee crisis our bus trip took twice as long but it's still only mid afternoon with plenty of time to party. Suki's friend Ben lives within 5 mins walk of Oktoberfest so we take a short stroll from the bus station and into one of the many stores selling Dirdls and Leiderhousens. 30 mins later we're suited up and looking the part ready to celebrate in one of the world biggest festivals.

We drop out bags off and head into the festival. We meet Ben at on of the main tents who's taken the day off with a bunch of work mates. Mixing with a bunch of locals (who have been coming almost every year since they were legal to drink) we get an authentic local tour taking us to the best stops and rides. Highlights include:

Devils Wheel - Ground based 'merry go round' which speeds up to throw everyone off with added rope and falling objects - the winner is the last one standing. Fun for all ages and very entertaining to watch.

Toboggan - Fast moving conveyor belt (hilarious watching people fall over) which you have to jump on then climb up the stairs offering and amazing view of the festival followed a quick decent via the slippery slide.

The night is topped off by losing our stomachs (and minds) on the Frisbee ride and we smash down some more festival food and we take the short stroll home.

  • Oktoberfest (Day 2)

    3 Oktober 2015, Jerman ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today we planned to catch up with some good friends from our last job who have also travelled to Munich to party at Oktoberfest.

We meet Amie and Sammie at the entrance at midday and head into the HB tent to start boozing. Steins have slowly been increasing in price every year and this year were stung with €10.40 each plus tip.......although that doesn't slow us down. Entering the HB tent we head to the private area at the back and score a special table as one of Dee's cousin is a waitress there and makes sure we're well looked after. Dee arrives shortly after and the fun begins!

5 hours later we emerge from the tent slightly loose footed and we take the girls for a tour of all the cool local spots and rides we learnt the day before. Finally it's 9pm and we end up back at the HB tent with some of Dee's family as we knock back a final Stein before we stroll home. What a brilliant day catching up with old friends.

  • Munich

    5 Oktober 2015, Jerman ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

It's a rough start for Trav who feeling the effects of boozing the last two days. Luckily we set aside today for a rest day. Ben is also sick with a cold so we opt for quite day in to recover and rehydrate.

We head out to get some groceries and its absolute mayhem in the city. Being the last weekend of the festival and brilliant weather, the crowds are massive. Some of our friends venture back inside but they can hardly move. We're glad we've got the day off and enjoy relaxing back at Bens house.

It's our last day and Ben is feeling better so he takes us for a walking tour around town. Unfortunately the weather has taken a turn for the worse and were almost saturated by the time we reach the cafe. Our time in Munich draw to an end as we have a final dinner at a fancy Japanese 'Hot Pot' restuarant where you cook your own food on your personal stove!

The evening is topped off by one of Bens expensive red wines from his cellar.

  • LONDON (DAY 1)

    7 Oktober 2015, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Thanks to Sukis global friend network we're grateful to score another stint of free accommodation with Pratty and Katie in Clapham.

The weather is already pretty average so we postpone Sukis birthday fun day and head downtown to the Tate Modern Museum. Unimpressed by the things people classify as art (i.e. Blank canvasses with random circular red brush strokes and sculptures created from steel wool) we leave and head back to Borough Food Markets under the bridge and struggle to decide what to have for lunch.

The rain has started so we crank open the broken umbrella we stole from the apartment and continue our walk to Southbank before heading back home. We're on cooking duty tonight and whip in an incredible lasagne and catch up with Sukis friends Ben and Mark who pop over.

  • Zurich

    7 Oktober 2015, Swiss ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We decided to travel to London via an overnight stop in Zurich to visit Sukis friends Bud and Carol, and of course their beautiful little baby Harvey!

A bit of a panic at the train station when we discover the "cheap train" we book from Munich to Zurich was actually a bus... Some quick moving and a lot of running later we manage to get the bus just in time- phew!

Upon arrival in Zurich we head to Carol and Buds place and settle in for a lovely evening over pizza and catch ups.

The next morning we wake up and its Sukis birthday!!! We are actually really happy just to have a sleep in and do nothing. We wake up to hang out with Harvey and watch him have breakfast- he's learning to eat via the "baby led weaning" method and its so much fun watching him shove food in his face. A relaxing afternoon and we are off to the airport- next stop, London!!!

  • LONDON (SUKI BIRTHDAY, HYDE PARK, LION K

    10 Oktober 2015, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

The sky has cleared and the weather is beautiful. Today we're celebrating Sukis belated birthday. Back to the tube our first stop is Hyde Park. We stop at Pret to pick up supplies for lunch and hire one of the cool city bikes via the automated credit card.

Cruising around the park we stop at various ponds to check out the duck and geese that elegantly float along the water. Kensington Castle is next on the list but the outrageous price deters us from see the whole thing so we have a picnic next to the lake and try to feed the squirrels.

Back on the bikes we start to head East and were pulled over by a police car in a narrow road in the middle of the park. They informed us that you can't ride in this section on the park and Trav refrained himself for informing them that you can't drive a car here as well. After a long discussion of who was right and wrong, we concluded that the white circle with a red bike in the centre meant 'No Cycling' as opposed to the internationally recognized bicycle with a red diagonal cross. The coppers also told us that's it's usually a £60 fine - Trav responded with saying at the current interest rates that's about $400 Aussie bucks. They laughed and we parted ways (pushing our bikes) as they drove away.

At night we saw the famous Lion King musical. Trav was nervous about Sukis discounted online £35 tickets but it turned out to be pretty decent seats on the grand circle. The show was brilliant and very entertaining with all the animals and impressive props. Finally we could sing along with the lion king songs we'd been rehearsing all week!

  • LONDON (STREET ART TOUR)

    11 Oktober 2015, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

At dinner the other night it was recommended to us to do an alternative street art waking tour in East London.

The tour kicked off at 3pm and we spent 2.5 hours wondering the streets with a local artist who have the backgrounds to each display. She was lucky enough to have her own exhibit on display. The majority of the artwork had obtained permission from the building owners in lieu of late night stealth missions. She told a story of one of the artists who was caught and sent to prison and following his time actually met President Obama.

Next stop we caught up with Sukis old boss in London and downed a few pints at a local pub followed by catching up with her old housemate Mark for dinner at the old favorite restaurant in China Town.

  • LONDON (BRIXTON POP)

    11 Oktober 2015, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Today is wedding dress shopping day for Suki so she heads into the city with some friends whilst Trav catches some Zzzzz and meets up with a friend they met on the Navimag cargo barge in Chile. After a few drinks, Suki arrives at the pub excited about the buying a dress! In celebration we cheers and Steve tells us stories of the rest of his trip and future plans.

A few more pints down we return home and get ready to go out for dinner. We stroll to the now 'Trendy' Brixton village and have dinner outside one of the tiny pop-up restuarants. After dinner we head to 'Brixton Pop' - a cool venue that's been created out of stacked shipping containers producing numerous bars, eateries and groovy places to chill with friends. It's been a great night and we stop for one last drink at a pub of the way home.

  • LONDON (POP QUIZ CHAMPIONS!)

    12 Oktober 2015, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Michelle found time in her busy All Blacks Tour schedule and caught the train to London to catch up. After a traditional roast at a local pub Michelle was glued to the TV watching the Ireland V Scotland match.

Over the last couple of days Pratty and Katie had been prepping up for the weekly trivia pop quiz at their local pub. Luckily Michelle was in town and at 8pm we regrouped at the Clapham North ready for a challenge. Unfortunately it seemed that our booking was lost so Pratty stealthily tore up another groups reservation so we could have a table.

It was a tense few rounds with all members of the team able to chip in and solve the puzzles. Sukis only contribution extended to knowing the name of a feather pen (quill) for which she felt made her one of the group......

In the end out of 10 teams we tied for first and then won the tie-breaker question of guessing the quiz masters mothers year of birth (she was way old!). We split the £50 jackpot 6 ways and were well impressed with the victory. For Pratty, this was his first win since they started 18 months ago - obviously the Aussie contributions pushed us over the line.

  • LONDON (THE WEDDING DRESS SAGA)

    13 Oktober 2015, Inggris ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Unfortunately not all of the gang love Sukis new dress. This has now become a bigger issue than global warming!

With one last day in London, Michelle and Suki head into to town to inspect more dresses. After a long day, the RIGHT dress is found and with a bit of sympathy she gets a full refund on the purchase of the first dress!

Trav has been roaming the city by himself checking out the main tourist spots and catches up with the girls for dinner before heading to the theatre.

Suki has booked us in for the show 'The Curious Case of the Dog in the Night' which although her Asian thriftyness scores us tickets with a good part of the stage obstructed, turned out to the be pretty interesting based on the life of an Autistic kid.

We say our farewell to Michelle and head home to pack for our 2nd last leg - Hong Kong!

  • Honkers!

    16 Oktober 2015, Hongkong ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

The end is near as we leave Europe and head back to Hong Kong. We are staying with Sukis best friend Josh so are looking forward to chilling in his nice 28th story pad for a few days! Suki actually chucked a bit of a tanty when she found out Josh and Titus were going to be away the week we were going to be there- completely unreasonably as we were the ones that changed out dates but that's not the point! Fortunately Josh being awesome, changed his flight out so we got one night together before they left. And there was the added bonus that we got to babysit their little toy poodle Hugo while they are away!

Hong Kong time was chilled and fun- we took the opportunity to catch up on a lot of stuff (such as wedding planning!), with another added bonus of getting food made for us by Josh and Titus' house maid :-) We hung out with Hugo and took him on little excursions, to Lamma Island and also a tiring 10km return trip to the Peak- Hugo is extremely fit for such a little guy! The most loving and affectionate little guy, it was so much fun looking after him all weekend.

Sukis mum also happened to be in town so we caught up for dinner with Sukis family one night. Jasons friend Perci had opened up a popular new Mexican restaurant so we went to pay him a visit. On the last night we head to Chalis place, where Molly and Chali cooked us a great dinner. We then head out for dessert afterwards! (yum yum)

Before you know it its time to get moving again.. travelling in style with our business class flights and fancy lounge access. The clock is ticking and our final stop is Japan!
