  • Valparaiso - Day 2

    21 mei 2015, Chili ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Lorena and Rapheal arrived at the hostel looking like Zombies from their overnight bus ride.

With our group reformed we decided to take a private boat around the bay to check out the port. After lunch we hiked up the hills to check out the open air musuem which turned out to be quite disappointing compared to the local street art/graffitti on all the back streets.

Another group cook-up at the hostel then we found a cosy local bar with a brilliant 2 piece band playing the harmonica. Being the eve of a public holiday - the town was packed with locals and buzzing with excitement.

  • Perro

    21 mei 2015, Chili ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We adopted a stray dog today.. or "independent dog" as they like to call them here. We named him "Perro" ("dog" in Spanish :-) ).

Perro was sitting outside the train station when we arrived in Vina Del Mar. He had a few scars and looked a bit worse for wear, definitely one of the less healthy dogs we'd seen, and not as cute as some others.
He started following us as we walked down the street. This is fairly normal.. the street dogs like to follow you for a bit until they find someone else of interest and follow them instead. But Perro stayed with us. Eventually I couldn't resist and gave him a pat on the head even though he was smelly. He followed us for about 2km, until we reached the hostel our friends were checking in to. We were waiting outside and Perro waited with us. Then he started playing fetch with us with a rock he found on the ground! We would throw the rock for him and he would take turns bringing it back to me and Travis.

Perro stayed with us all day. Walked up the hill, to the beach, played more rock fetch in the sand, up to the lookout, even waited with us as we watched the surfers for half an hour.

It was so sad to leave him :-( Hope you are doing ok Perro! Sorry we had to leave, we miss you already.

On a side note, there was a riot in Valparaiso after the parade today.. we missed most if the action :-(

  • Goodbye Chile!

    24 mei 2015, Chili ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

We spent our second last day in Santiago checking out the last of the sights, wandered through the mall and Plaza De Armas, where there were a few street performances and chess competitions going. Stumbled across a little microbrewery near our hostel for dinner and had a lovely evening out complete with ceviche (mixed raw cured fish, my favourite!), delicious cocktails and a great live singer. Great night :-)

On fly out day we checked out of our hostel and head straight to the airport.. we weren't flying out till that evening but we had lounge access and were ready to make the most of it! It was great.. one of the nicest lounges we've been in- especially after "roughing it" a bit it was great to get pampered. Funny how easy it is passing 6 hours at the airport when there's free food and drinks involved.. Suki may have gained 2kg purely in cheese consumption :-)

Goodbye South America... Thanks for an awesome time!

  • Welcome to... Miami!

    26 mei 2015, Verenigde Staten ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

Hola Miami! (where strangely enough quite a few people still speak Spanish.. maybe we've just never noticed before!)

Arriving in the early morning from our red eye flight we were in a bit of a daze. Fortunately we were staying at what turned out to be an awesome airbnb place.. our host Lior was so chilled and relaxed, it felt like we were housemates in his apartment for the next few days.

Situated a stones throw away from Lincoln St mall and a short stroll to South beach we had a relaxing few days soaking up the sun, doing a spot of shopping and absorbing the "Miami vibe", including some questionably dressed people and over the top flashy cars. A few not so nice pretentious types but you can't win them all I guess.

Unbeknownst to us it turned out to also be Memorial Day long wkend in the states. Also unbeknownst to us Miami has been in past years a bit of a trouble spot over this wkend, with a huge influx of partygoers (in particular African American) and shootings in the past. Fortunately there was no trouble this year. The police were well prepared with patrol cars at every corner. Was quite a sight with all the interesting characters roaming the streets! Travis and I also celebrated our 14 month anniversary with dinner at "Mangoes" complete with an amazing soul band and live show from some raunchy dancers :-)

Another highlight in Miami was our adventure today experiencing a Jet Pack ride! We had seen this on tv before so jumped at the chance at giving it a go. Basically the jet pack is a chair you get strapped into with a large hose connected to the discharge of a jet ski. The water jets propel you into the air (up to 30m at full throttle!) and a max speed of approx. 20mph. Was great fun!

  • Costa Rica!

    27 mei 2015, Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We arrive into San Jose airport and are immediately confronted by hourds of locals outside hustling to give you a ride into town. It wasn't too bad though, they were still surprisingly friendly about it. We are quite surprised by how well most people speak English. It ties in with what we had heard about Costa Rica being quite commercialised now by the tourism industry and consequently things are quite expensive.

We pick up our hire car (a nifty Toyoto Corolla) and head to Monteverde.. a 3 hour drive up to the 1200m elevation cloud forest! Once we get out of the city the landscape becomes beautifully green and lush. We check into our hostel, find our bearings and settle in for an early night after a long travel day, ready for a big day tomorrow!

  • Monteverde

    28 mei 2015, Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Staying at the hostel here is cheap! We pay about $24/night for a private room with a delicious breakfast in the morning. The hostel is run by a small family who are very helpful when trying to plan activities.

Monteverde is little adventure packed town full of backpackers and famous for zip lining, bungee jumping and the cloud forest (because of the altitude).

Recommend by the Hostel we booked into the Extremo Zip Line tour. A short drive on rugged dirt roads we arrive at the private property and get suited up with all the harnesses and safety gear. A few of the helmets already had go pro mounts which worked out well for Suki. After a brief safety induction we commence the zip lining starting off on the beginner trails. After a few smaller zips, we start travelling upto 1km across the valley with amazing panaramic views. The zip lines get faster and longer as we go.

At one point we try a massive 'tarzan' swing with a 10m freefall sending you high into the treetops. The highlight was the 1km superman zip line (attached by a harness on your back) which you fly across the valley at an impressive pace.

After a quick afternoon snooze at the hostel we took a drive to the turnoff for the 'Strangler Fig Tree'. A quick 5m downhill hike to and we approach a massive hollowed-out fig tree forming an internal spiral staircase. Putting our claustrophobic fears to one side, we started climbing to the top squeezing inbetween the branches in places. Once at the top, the view was worth the climb!

For dinner we decided to go for the authentic option and eat at a soda (cheap local cuisine). After a massive feed, we got picked up for a forest night tour. Our guide was very passionate taking the time to get to know us and explain all the animals along the way. Tonight was an exceptional night where we were able to see a tarantula, 2-toed sloth, green viper snake, 2 scorpions making love, possum, endangered anteater, 2 different toucans, and a hummingbird. Suki was pissed that the sloth just hangout in the tree and looked nothing like the one in 'Ice Age'. Interesting fact: a sloth takes a dump only once a week and will lose 1/3 of their body weight.

Big day and we were spent when we got back to our hostel. Back on the road tomorrow to La Fortuna.

  • La Fortuna

    29 mei 2015, Costa Rica ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

It was a long drive today. 110km from Monteverde to La Fortuna, 30km of which was on unpaved gravel road.. in "Bumpy", our "not a 4WD" Corolla. So relieved when we got to the paved road!

Fortunately the second half of the drive was very beautiful as we drove around the perimeter of the great Arenal Lake and eventually caught sight of Arenal Volcano, an impressive and perfectly conical volcano. It was the first clear day in a month so lucky us!

The volcano is clearly visible from the main street of La Fortuna town, which is very cool. Our hostel is awesome- complete with hammocks and a bar (free welcome drink!), as well as access to the pool down the road. Its time for an afternoon of chillaxing! :-)

  • Cerro Chato (the water volcano)

    30 mei 2015, Costa Rica ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Early start today as we set off on the challenging hike up Cerro Chato - the water volcano!

At 1600m elevation the hike is a 6km round trip- doesn't sound like much, but we had been forewarned that it is not for the faint hearted. One person actually claimed they thought they were going to die twice on the hike. After conquering Torres Del Paine we consider ourselves "expert" hikers now so were ready to take on the challenge!

Cerro Chato is the little sister of the famous Arenal volcano and has been dormant for over 3000 years. The best part about it is that it has a 500m diameter green lagoon sitting in the crater of the volcano which u can swim in once you get to the top!

The hike was great! It didn't disappoint. The steep climb, uneven track and high humidity gave us a good workout. Many of the steps/ boulders were over knee height. Suki got stuck in knee deep "quick mud" at one point. Once you get to the top, there is an approx 150m climb down to the lake crater.. and that's when things got really tricky! Some of the steps were over shoulder heights and badly eroded. Lots of fun!

The best part was getting to the lagoon. Beautifully green. Was great to have a refreshing swim in there! Home just in time for lunch and an hour before the thunderstorm hit... Some other guys we met on the trail said it turned into a torrential mudslide. Win!

We also picked up two hitchhiking locals today, to "pay it forward" and bank some hitchhiking credits for the future :-)

  • Back to San Jose

    31 mei 2015, Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

3 hour drive back to San Jose to drop off car. Lesson learnt: No more driving in Costa Rica unless you like very narrow roads, heavy rain, windy bends and drivers who stop anywhere and do whatever they want. We're sticking to buses from now on!

    Goodbye "Bumpy!"
