      At Sea: Far East Legends Stats

      Day 2 of two days at sea.

      Today was pretty much a duplicate of yesterday. Except that we socialized with friends at the Oceania Club Party and then Mui and I dined alone at the Polo Grill.

      Captain Brajcic and GM Laurence both took an active part in tonight’s Oceania Club Party. As she always does, OCA Cella gave us some stats for the segment and threw in some “trivia” about “our ages.”

      Here are a few tidbits …

      There are 545 guests from 21 countries on this segment … 477 repeaters; 161 of which are at the elite level (20 plus cruise points) … 1 guest each from Ireland and the Netherlands. 154 new guests joined us in Dubai … 68 of them are first timers on Oceania.

      There are 402 crew members from 40 countries taking care of us … a mini United Nations. Of the entire crew complement, 80% are on the hotel side.

      As for the “age” trivia … the average age is 70; median age is 72. The age that the largest group falls into is 71. There are 3 teenagers; 68 passengers in their 80s; 1 passenger is 90. There are 11 birthday twins.

      By the way, we will be back in India tomorrow … with a small change to our schedule. Instead of departing at 7:00p as originally planned, we’re going to be leaving at 5:00p. Apparently, there is a cyclone bearing down on the area, so Captain Brajcic wants to boogie out of town early.      Weiterlesen

      9. Seetag

      22. März 2020, Bay of Bengal ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

      Der 9 Seetag ist heute gestartet. So langsam merkt man wie die Stimmung immer mehr kippt. Die Passagiere suchen nach Sachen worüber sie sich beschweren können und uns als Crew das Leben schwer machen können.
      Ich versuche die Tage mit viel Kaffee und Soduko im Shop zu überstehen 😅. Gestern Abend wurde eine Crewparty auf dem offenen Deck veranstaltet. Das hat wieder richtig Spaß gemacht.
      Morgen sollen wir in Sri Lanka ankommen und betankt werden. Bis jetzt ist der Stand das wir im Hafen stehen dürfen. Das wäre super für mich, dann hätte ich einen halben Tag frei ☺️🙏. Danach machen wir uns dann auf den Heimweg. Neuster Stand ist, dass wir am 14. 03. In England ankommen.      Weiterlesen

      Singapore Airport

      I get why this is a top rated airport in the world! It was beautiful to fly through and kept me entertained for a few hours. They had so many duty free shops as well as so many gardens!

      The first shot is one of the most notable for the Singapore airport and that’s called the Jewel. You can take the train through there, but not able to enter it unless you exit and reenter security. They also have a tour if you have over a 5.5 hour layover of Singapore and the airport! I highly recommend if you layover here try and see the tour because I wish I could’ve.

      With the new Disney ship coming to SEA and basing from Singapore I know I’ll be back soon. I am looking forward soon to seeing the city!      Weiterlesen

      Singapore’s Changi Airport

      I had no idea that Singapore’s Changi Airport is so unique until my friend, SJ, told me that many people consider it a destination unto itself.

      We visited Changi with the express purpose of catching a flight to London, (at 15 hours, the longest flight either of us have ever taken) but after checking our bags, I was delighted to find that our terminal featured lush decor and a free butterfly garden.

      I had my first taste of Singapore style coffee here, too. Kopi Peng is iced coffee with evaporated milk, a lot like Vietnamese coffee, actually. So yummy!

      I’ve never had so much fun while waiting for my flight. In fact, I found myself rushing back to the gate for boarding because there was so much to enjoy.

      Since we flew with Singapore Airlines, it only seemed right to start our flight with Singapore Slings. I’d never had the drink before. Not only were they tasty, but they were on the house.

      How to Surf (by Lewis)

      I took surfing lessons in Weligama, Sri Lanka and it was really fun. Sri Lanka has the best starter surfer beaches there because there are consistent waves, no rocks, soft sand, and chest deep water. Gliding on a surfboard can be really exciting once you get the hang of staying up. Learning to surf is an amazing way to clear out your mind and focus on one thing.

      Before you start surfing, you need to gather the supplies. Those supplies include a surfboard, a bathing suit, and good waves. A good wave is a not-too-big, not-too-small wave. After you get the materials, paddle out, using your hands, into the surf. After that, you need to find a good wave. When the good wave is thirty feet away, turn the board around, by paddling, a one hundred eighty degree angle. When the wave is about ten feet away, start ferociously paddling forward. Let the wave catch you and start standing up. To stand up you need to: push up in a pushup position, then slide your back foot up to just about a third of the board from the back, and finally, push up, with your hands, on the board while sliding your back foot up and past your other foot. Don't forget to keep your arms out for balance; otherwise you'll fall off!

      Riding the waves is a great way to clear out your brain and focus on one thought. With only a surfboard, a bathing suit, and some waves, you can empty your mind and have a good time. Surfing was really exciting for me, and I want to share that excitement with you.      Weiterlesen

      03.22.2024 Bay of Bengal Day1/2

      A much needed sea day after 7 ports in a row. Know wonder we were tired last night. Clocks back another hour last night so we did get a little more sleep.
      Lectures, photo books and haircuts are on the agenda for today.
      Today was a first for us. Since Myron has a cold or sinus infection and Fiana had 8 days of photo book catch up. We decided to watch the lectures in our cabin. They are always shown live and then can be viewed later as well.
      First at 9:30 is Guest Lecture with Russell Lee: "The Great
      Tea Theft."
      Steep yourself in the true tale of the 1848 British spy who went to Asia to steal the secret of tea.
      11:00 is with Viking Resident Historian Iconic Lecture with Dr. Bryan Babcock: "How the Spice Trade Changed the World."
      Consider spices and aromatics as global trade's first commodities and their continuing legacies today.
      Dr Babcock just joined us in Singapore as Dr Cribbs disembarked, so first time listening to him today.
      Diana had a hair appointment at 5;40 followed by dinner. We returned to our cabin for an early evening staying in.
      We turn our clocks back 1/2 hour tonight. Now that’s an odd time but we need to get synced with Colombo, Sri Lanka, our next port in a few days.      Weiterlesen

      Colombo, Sri Lanka. Day 2

      After more or less restful night, we had an early breakfast at the hotel and were on the road by 8:00am. The Google map showed the driving time to Colombo around 3,5 hours. On the way we stopped to take pictures of the lake and a Temple during the day light. Another location for a short stop was a place where lots of monkey were sitting on the guard rails.
      We stopped at the tea factory where we had a tour and tasting of 9 different teas. Gold tea is only available in Sri Lanka. Short stop to take pictures of the rice plantation.

      Then we arrived in Colombo and the first stop was an Independence Square with Independence Memorial Hall in the middle.

      Independence Memorial Hall is a national monument in Sri Lanka built for commemoration of the independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule with the restoration of full governing responsibility to a Ceylonese-elected legislature on 4 February 1948. Located at the head of the monument is the statue of the first prime minister of the country

      Our last stop was Gangaramaya Temple. The temple's architecture demonstrates an eclectic mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese architecture.
      We spent quite a long time there. Unfortunately, the heat was unbearable and we were getting really tired.
      We asked our guide to take us back to the ship.
      After quick lunch and a shower we felt a little better, but still very tired after seven days of touring in the heat. Glad we have two sea days in front of us. We went to bed at 8:00pm.      Weiterlesen

      Day 92: Sailing the Bay of Bengal

      Today we continued our journey for days traveling from Phuket, Thailand towards Colombo, Sri Lanka. Just typing that I am in awe that we are here in the middle of ocean on the other side of our planet. Our earth is becoming smaller with each port we visit. Traveling to distance places isn’t
      T as scary as it was before this trip

      So, what do you do on a sea day - You eat anywhere between three and seven meals a day. You can visit the Spa & Gym. - Today - I walked by them.

      In the morning I sat with Gail (The Grand Master Felt Maestro) you guided me to finish my dolphin. Than at 1:00pm we attended a champagne tasting session. The guys always do a great job teaching us about the different wines and teaching us how to examine and taste wines. Things to look for in color, linger, and palate. It’s educational and fun!

      We met the other “Paul & Donna” at the wine tasting. It’s been 92 days since we boarded Neptune and it is almost daily we meet someone new.

      In the afternoon Paul attended Jennifer Eremeere’s lecture “Time to Write that Book.” She does an amazing job leading her workshops. I love that there is always a practical exercise we do right then and there to support the lesson of the day.

      It was time for dinner - and I don’t think we attended the show in the Star Theater (I don’t have any photos). So, it must have been an early to bed night.      Weiterlesen

      Story of Tea Part Two

      We are now in the Bay of Bengal and it is time for part two in the story of tea. The Brits were not satisfied with correcting the trade balance. They wanted to know how to grow and process the tea leaves, secrets closely guarded by the Chinese. So they financed a spy, a renowned horticulturnist Robert Fortune. He was able to locate and gain access to the area growing green tea. He discovered the Chinese were adding gypsum and Prussian Blue (potential poisons) to green tea to make it green because they thought the Brits liked the greener color better. He was also able to smuggle out plants and seeds. None of these survived because an Indian port official left the terrariums carrying the plants open. Meanwhile he was searching for the source of plants for black tea. He discovered it and found out it was the same plant with different processing. This time he labeled the terrariums "Do Not Open." They made it successfully to the fields in India where tea thrived.Weiterlesen
