      Getting to Grenada

      We left Trinidad on Wednesday afternoon, after spending over a month there. We had a great time, saw some amazing things and met some wonderful people. Leaving the mooring was a bit stressful, but I was happy to say goodbye to the plank I had to walk across every day to get ashore! 🙈 The sail to Scotland Bay around the corner was fine, and apart from an early-evening party boat, we basically had it to ourselves. We anchored there overnight and left at 3am because the trip to Grenada is about 15 hours long and we wanted to arrive before dark. There was a very strong current pushing us west and we were told to keep east of the oil rig so that we weren’t catapulted past Grenada, but this meant that we spent a lot of the trip with our nose into the swells. Not pleasant! It was our first sail without crew and I’ve got to say I was a bit anxious. 😬 Luckily it went smoothly, and when we arrived in Grenada, Tony was there to show us where to anchor.       Day 67

      Panama und San Blas

      In Panama City wären wir gerne noch länger geblieben. Die Stadt gleicht so gar nicht den anderen zentralamerikanischen Städten, die wir bis jetzt besucht haben. Fährt man abends durch den neuen Teil, könnte man meinen, man sei in New York gelandet. 🌃
      Nicht so im alten Stadtteil Casco Viejo, wo wir unsere Unterkunft hatten. Hier hat es coole Bars und Restaurants sowie schöne Kolonialbauten.

      Nach 2 Tagen Panama City startete unser Inselhopping auf San Blas, das wir alle schon sehnsüchtig erwarteten. Während 4 Tagen besuchten wir in einer Gruppe von ca. 30 Backpackern verschiedene Inseln in der Karibik zwischen Panama und Kolumbien, mal eine andere Art meine Geburtstag zu feiern.😊

      Bewohnt werden die kleinen Inseln vom indigenen Stamm der Kuna. Die Kuna sind ein stolzes Volk mit vielen Traditionen und Bräuchen. Touristen sind willkommen, müssen sich aber an die Regeln der Kuna halten. Ausländer dürfen zum Beispiel keine Fische fangen oder Kokosnüsse von den Bäumen nehmen. Diese sind nämlich neben US-Dollar eine Währung der Kuna. 🥥 Jede Kokosnuss auf den Inseln hat somit einen Besitzer. All das lernten wir bei einem Besuch der Caledonia Island Community, wo uns die Kinder mit einem Willkommenstanz begrüssten.

      Ansonsten verbrachten wir die Tage an den traumhaften Stränden mit Beachvolleyball spielen, Schnorcheln und Kartenspielen, bevor wir am Mittwoch in Capurgana, Kolumbien, ankamen.

      Day 10

      Dancing At Sea

      December 21, 2022, Caribbean Sea ⋅ 🌙 77 °F

      We’re not the ones doing the dancing … it’s Insignia that is jiggling and wiggling as we continue deeper into the Caribbean for tomorrow’s port call.

      The motion of the ocean was noticeable as soon as we left the protected harbor of St John’s, Antigua. As the afternoon progressed into evening, the wind picked up … blowing hard enough that the deck 5 promenade was locked down to passengers. No veranda time for me tonight, though I did brave the wind to rescue the “wet varnish” sign that was fluttering like mad on the railing.

      Tonight we dined at one of the specialty restaurants, the Polo Grill … with our friend CD Ray. We picked the date … he picked the time and venue. We had a delightful meal, catching up on each other’s lives. Travel being a common link, there was no lack of topics to discuss and plenty of opportunities for laughter.

      We wrapped up our evening with tonight’s entertainment in the Insignia Lounge … a production show titled “Acoustic Sessions” … featuring the “most recognizable pop music in an ‘unplugged’ acoustic style live band setting.” With the string quartet joining the show band to accompany the production cast, it was a lively show. Nicely done.

      Tomorrow is the third one of our run of seven ports on this cruise. What was supposed to be a “chill” cruise has been anything but as we seem to be busy doing this … that … or something else. Not complaining at all, but we are looking forward to a quiet morning tomorrow since we don’t get into port until 11:00a.      Read more

      Day 13

      Day at Sea

      December 24, 2022, Caribbean Sea ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

      First, it was supposed to be a day in St Barts … the heavy swell forecasted for today put paid to those plans.

      Next, it was supposed to be a day in Sint Maarten … swells and a strong current on the unprotected side of the pier put paid to those plans. It explains why Mein Schiff eventually moved away from the berth we tried to dock at and took the protected side of the furthest pier … and why the Silver Sea ship that was ahead of us turned tail and left … leaving us to make our attempts to tie up.

      Could this be because we are on day “unlucky 13” of our trip? Nah! I don’t believe in that. Just the vagaries of cruising weather causing mischief.

      So, after sounding our horn in salute to Philipsburg, and exchanging toots with RCL’s Voyager of the Seas and Mein Schiff, we turned our bow out to sea.

      We don’t mind a day at sea. After all, we will have many, many more port visits by the time it is all said and done. But I do feel bad for those who are on Insignia just for this short cruise.

      Normally, we don’t spend much time on the pool deck. Since we had already donned our swimming attire, however, we decided to head up there. Mui immediately took advantage of the then-empty swimming pool for a pretend-dip in the ocean. I settled myself in the shade on deck 10 to catch up my journal.

      Life is good!

      Day 13

      Christmas Cheer from Insignia

      December 24, 2022, Caribbean Sea ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

      A lovely day at sea … all the more so because it was an unexpected one.

      While the decorations have been evident since we embarked in Miami a week ago, and Christmas carols have been playing in the background, the holiday ambiance has been quite subdued.

      (Daily lighting of the Menorah candle was on the Currents schedule, though we did not participate.)

      Until today.

      Suddenly, Christmas goose appeared on the menu in the Polo Grill … crew began sporting Santa hats … the Insignia Show Band performed a selection of Christmas Favorites on the pool deck at noon … and tonight the entertainment staff joined together to perform the “Insignia Holiday Show.” We enjoyed bits and pieces of all of this.

      I understand there is a “Christmas Eve Rock Around the Clock” party up in Horizons later tonight … as well as an Interdenominational Christmas Service led by CD Ray. We’ll be long in bed by the time these activities get going.

      Day 20

      Dancing on New Year’s Eve

      December 31, 2022, Caribbean Sea ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F

      Once again, it is Insignia that is doing the dancing … not us.

      In fact, if conditions don’t calm down — which, based on Captain Brajcic’s noon announcement, we aren’t expecting to happen — there won’t be any dancing to ring in the New Year. Unless you call the lurches we make when the ship unexpectedly “zigs” and we respond with a “zag” a new style of dancing.

      Capt B said that the waves today are in the 12 foot/4 meter range. Seems more than that to me, but I will take his word for it. We went through a brief squall earlier, and it looks like another one is heading our way momentarily. The apparent wind was around 45+ knots when I last checked.

      Mui and I have experienced 40 foot waves and hurricane force winds … on a smaller, 100-passenger vessel … when we were crossing from the Ross Sea in Antarctica to New Zealand. Thus, we’re OK … feeling no ill effects. But it does seem rather quiet around the ship, so I imagine a number of people are prone in their cabins.

      I have some great footage showing the motion of the ocean, but I am limited by bandwidth, so here’s just a short snippet for those of you who are land-bound to enjoy as you “armchair travel.” (Sorry about the horizon not being straight … between the motion of the ocean and the wind, it was hard to keep the camera still.)

      Happy New Year from Insignia

      January 1, 2023, Caribbean Sea ⋅ 🌙 79 °F

      Yes, we managed to stay up to bid 2022 farewell … and ring in 2023. We did the countdown as we watched the ball drop in New York City.

      Attendance at the party was small. Mostly I think because of the motion of the ocean. But also because there were early parties for those who didn’t want to wait up. After all, every hour some country somewhere around the world was ringing in the new year. Those who did attend the late party — passengers, staff, and crew — jumped in with both feet to enjoy the festivities. And yes, there was plenty of dancing … the real kind 🎉

      Day 76

      Blue Sailing San Blas Islands, Tag 4

      January 12, 2023, Caribbean Sea ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

      Wir sind weiterhin auf dem offenen Meer und werden ordentlich durchgeschüttelt. Es ist weit und breit nur Wasser und teilweise bis zu 4 Meter hohe Wellen zu sehen. Ich habe mittlerweile die 3te Tablette genommen und auch Niels hat schon zwei genommen. Das soll schon was heißen. Ansonsten ist heute durchhalten angesagt, da es noch bis morgen andauern wird. 2 Leute haben sich bereits übergeben. Hoffentlich wird das nicht mehr.
      Wir fahren auch nur unter Motor und Segeln nicht. Niels ist deswegen enttäuscht und hatte gehofft, etwas mitsegeln zu können.

      Weil die Wellen nicht genug sind, dachte sich meine Gebärmutter meine Periode 4 Tage früher ins Rennen zu schicken. Toll... Da man eh nur rum liegen und abwarten kann, ist es aber erträglich. Es soll zum Abend hin etwas ruhiger werden und morgen Vormittag sind wir in Cartagena. 

      Ein Highlight gab es aber! Niels hat einen Thunfisch gefangen. Richtig toll. Den wird es am nächsten Tag zu Essen geben, wenn die See wieder ruhiger ist.      Read more

      Day 86

      Beginn der Segeltour in Cartagena

      April 8, 2023, Caribbean Sea ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

      Am Freitag um 19.00 Uhr war der Treffpunkt am Hafen von Cartagena. Nun kann die 5 tägige Reise nach Panama beginnen. Zuerst gab es eine intensive Polizeikontrolle des Gepäcks. 🧳Nachdem alle Gepäckstücke von 20 Personen kontrolliert wurden, durfen wir an Board. Schuhe aus, Bikini an und nach einer kurzen Instruktion ging es auch schon los. 🩴👙
      Ca. 22.30 Uhr verliessen wir den Hafen von Cartagena. In den ersten zwei Stunden durchquerten wir den Kanal. Das Meer war ruhig. Nach 2 Stunden waren wir auf offener See und dies für ganze 45 Stunden. Überall Blau, soweit das Auge reicht. 🌊Nur Wellen und den Himmel gab es zu sehen. Mit den Reisetabletten konnten wir uns gut an den Wellengang gewöhnen. Im Bett wurden wir hin und her geschoben - das Gepäck musste überall befestigt werden - vom Toilettengang fangen wir erst gar nicht an. 🚻Nach dem ersten Tag auf See bevor die Sonne unterging - besuchten uns die ersten Delfine und schwammen ein paar Meilen mit uns mit. 🐬Eine unglaubliche Begegnung. Alle waren Glücklich.

      Alle drei Mahlzeiten werden für uns 20 Passagiere durch Manu zubereitet. Er ist ein Meisterkoch. 👨‍🍳Die Crew besteht aus 4 Personen, welche sich alle 2 Stunden abwechseln und uns sicher über das Wasser bringen. Unser Segelschiff die Wildcard ist über 20 Jahre alt und wie die Crew sagt ein Biest. ⛵️Zeitweise hatten wir das Gefühl das wir sinken würden, da dass Segelschiff von einer Seite auf die andere Schwankte. Von unserer Bettkabine aus, konnten wir manchmal durch die Luke sehen, wie wir unter Wasser gerieten.

      Wir sind eine coole Gruppe. Die Hälfte ist Dutch, dann 1 Amerikaner, 2 Engländer, zwei Schweizer, 1 Kandadier und ein Franzose. Die meiste Zeit verbringen wir mit Sandro und Demi aus St. Gallen. So viele Stunden auf offenem Meer und auf engem Raum ist nicht einfach für alle. Ständig ist man in Bewegung, keine Privatsphäre, 3-5 Stunden Schlaf pro Nacht und in den Schlafkabinen ist es enorm heiss. Dennoch haben wir uns alle gute verstanden und man nahm Rücksicht aufeinander. 🥰

      Day 112

      2 Tage am Barrier Reef

      May 4, 2023, Caribbean Sea

      Zwei Tage lang durften wir die magische Unterwasserwelt am zweitgrössten Barrier Reef der Welt erkunden.🪸🐠 Es hat uns wortwörtlich den Atem geraubt, als wir in diese bunte, belebte und ruhige Welt eingetaucht sind.
      Am ersten Tag war unser erster Stopp das Hol Chan. Direkt beim ersten Stopp wurden wir von Haien begrüsst.🦈🦈 Wir konnten mit ihnen schwimmen. Zuerst etwas ängstlich und mit grossem Respekt ins Wasser eingetaucht und nach 10 Sekunden war alles verflogen. Wir hatten das Glück diese einzigarten Wesen zu beobachten. Kurz darauf begrüsste uns eine Schildkröte 🐢 in ihrem Revier. Auch mit ihr durften wir einige Meter mitschwimmen.

      Beim zweiten Tauchstopp sahen wir riesige, bunte Korallenriffe, Rochen und erneute viele bunte Fische… 🐠🪸🦈🐟🐡
      Die Strömung war jedoch ziemlich stark an diesem Tag, was das Schwimmen gegen die Wellen anstrengend machte. 🌊🥵

      An einem Ort haben wir Tarpune Fische gefüttert. Sie werden bis 2,5 Meter gross. Bei der Fütterung hat der Fisch die Hand von Alessandra verschlungen. ✋🏼❌Wir hatten einen tollen Tourguide und wir waren eine kleine Gruppe. 🚤Er hat uns alles erklärt. Bei jedem Fisch den wir gesehen haben, hat er uns den Namen und seine Eigenschaften genannt. 🙋🏾‍♂️

      Am zweiten Tag haben wir erneut wunderbare Tiere gesichtet und hatten einen tollen Tag im Meer.

      Es ist eine wunderschöne Erfahrung gewesen, wie die gesamte Insel. Es war der erste Besuch auf dieser Insel - aber bestimmt nicht der Letzte. 😍🌞🏝️

      Heute sind wir zur Insel San Pedro gekommen. Hier verweilen wir die nächsten 5 Tage.

      Heute ist nicht alle Tage, wir kommen wieder - keine Frage!👍🏻✋🏼
