    • Beneath the Heath 🌳 & Camden Market

      19 giugno 2022, Inghilterra ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Busy! Seems to be tourists everywhere today. Journeyed on the Northern Line to Hampstead: the deepest tube station in the underground system. It has lifts because there are over 320 steps to the platforms!

I intended to do a walking tour around Hamstead but decided to go alone and just have a wander around today! It is such a pretty village which is so close to Central London. The Hamstead Heath is also part of this area. George Michael used to frequent that often. Say no more 😝

On my way back I stopped off at the Camden markets. They were insanely busy which was probably more annoying than fun. I dodged the crowds the best I could and enjoyed a toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream… It was delicious 😋

I started to feel a little flat today due to the fact that our hotel is not really that nice and I felt a bit angry 😠 again that the Airbnb had cancelled at Kensington which would have been a much nicer area. Don’t get me wrong, I am trying to turn lemons 🍋 into lemonade and I’m sure that will override this feeling. 🤞

There is also a full week of train 🚊 strikes to occur from Tuesday in London which is kinda annoying as well… 😕👎🏻💩
I never quite understand public transport strikes because it really affects the general public more than anyone else. In a city like London where there are international travellers trying to enjoy their long overdue holiday after the pandemic it seems pretty selfish to me. 🙅🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Oh well… Them‘s the breaks! Mamma Mia: Tge Party 🎉 tonight should lift our spirits!
      🥰🕺🏼

      Camden & Cathedral

      5 agosto 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

We love the London busses. £1.75 for unlimited journeys when tapping on within the hour, how good! Consequently, on Saturday we covered more ground then the other days and we were thankful for it because our feet had done some kms after the week so far. We bussed straight up to Camden Market in search of some more music, food and culture which we found wandering over the Lock and through the endless shops and stalls. I couldn’t help my magpie ways and purchased a little ring for my collection. Concurrently, Vikum ate his way around the free chicken tasters being offered as enticements…possibly the same stall twice? (hard to tell, there was lots of food stalls 😏). For lunch, we scrounged the Yorkshire (Pudding) Burrito that I’d had saved on my Google Maps for about as long as we’d had the flights to England booked…it was delicious despite it’s novelty factor. V a little underwhelmed, however he’s less of a roast dinner person than I am, I would say. After attempting to find a decent coffee at Turkish coffee spot, we left with traditional coffees that were more sour than we could manage and continued our ongoing battle to find decent coffee somewhere (I am always keeping an eye out for Aussie or Kiwi run coffee shops). Onto another bus we carried on to St Paul’s Cathedral which was unfathomably wonderful. The mosaics though not part of the original cathedral where my favourite and taking the 582 steps up to Dome galleries to see the inside structure of the dome plus the views over London was worth every step. Vikum found a pub nearby for an avo pint and then we continued our mini-crawl to another pub which we found under a railway arch with a seat right on the Thames, and again onto a quiet hotel bar for some respite. We crossed London Bridge and strolled along The Queen’s Walk to Tower Bridge, passing the Tower of London itself where there were no heads on pikes, but it had been a long day…so there might have been one head on pike soon enough (V was hangry) had we not found our way to an restaurant for a curry dinner - so delicious. The korma was much much sweeter than we’re used to and the Tikka Masala was next level. Vikum let me drag him to one last site on my list: a piece of the old Roman Londinium wall before running for our bus home where we met Trajan. Finding our way home we again opted for a bus, a longer 45min journey with some more sightseeing of central suburbs. We crashed for the night feeling accomplished in seeing so much of London.Leggi altro

      London Interlude

      9 maggio 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ 🌧 64 °F

On returning from Ireland, we both came down with bad colds. Have been pretty much out of it since. Gail’s sister arrived on Friday and we haven’t seen her yet.  Got COVID tests to be sure - negative. Luckily we had no plans that couldn’t easily be deferred. The nieces arrive tomorrow. I think we’ll be well enough to join them.

5/21 update:  Well, it has been a bit of a stretch. Our colds were pretty bad, especially mine. I missed Hampton Court and we both missed a performance of Book of Mormon that we had booked to see with Toby and Kirsten. They took friends instead. Then I noticed blood in my urine. So off to urgent care I went thinking I had a UTI. Wasn’t so simple. They considered admitting me to the hospital, but instead gave me 2 antibiotics and sent me to a nephrologist. Still not certain what the diagnosis is, but am pretty much back to normal. Have another appointment with the nephrologist Wednesday.

We did have some fun with the sister and nieces. Went to Camden Market yesterday and a cabaret last night. Walked along Regent Canal. We did make it to the Harry Potter play. I was drugged up trying to control my cough, but it was an overall good experience. Also went to Kensington Palace and Harrod‘s. Walking from KP to Harrod’s, we passed the Iranian embassy where protesters had splashed red paint on the front of the building.

      Camden Canals

      20 dicembre 2019, Inghilterra ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

After the zoo, we wandered down the canals and visited the nearby Camden Loch market. By far the coolest setting for a flea market that I've ever seen! The good stall choices were pretty extensive too.Leggi altro

      Camden Market y otros

      28 dicembre 2019, Inghilterra ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

      London Day 1

      16 agosto 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Woke up in Londonn at around 8:30am! And i was starving, so after dropping my bags off at the hotel that I will stay at for the night, I went over to find breakfast at a little café. I opted to get some smoked salmon eggs benedict 😋 and read my book as I ate breakfast. After that, I took a peek over at Hyde Park which is the area that I was staying at. It’s huuuuge! I only walked around for about 20 minutes and I don’t even think that I saw a tenth of the park. But the section that I did see was gorgeous! It had a little fountain and everything. The whole park was quite well maintained. After a short stroll, I walked over to Camden Market which was about an hour and 15 minutes. I stumbled upon a trapeze/circus school?? Which was random, but fun to watch for a little bit. I got to the market and looked around for a loooooong time. Funny considering that I didn’t end up buying anything (which I do regret now) but it was massive! I believe that it used to be a horse market or something. But yeah there’s endless stalls, I definitely didn’t get to check all of them out. But they had everything- clothes, jewelry, food, souvenirs, and so much more than that. I’d gotten some chicken dumplings for lunch, and a pastel de nata as a little dessert. After the market, I took the bus back to the hotel to check in. Except I fell asleep on the bus and stayed on for like 15 more minutes past my stop…. Oops. So then I had to walk for about 30 minutes back to the hotel. After I got my things settled in my room, I went to go to the Borough market to meet Jenny, who’s actually someone from Richmond! We connected over instagram through a mutual friend- which we happen to have quite a few of- but we’ve never actually met ourselves. We shared some overpriced strawberries covered in chocolate (€8=$16ish CAD)- but it was so so so delicious, don’t regret that choice. We did a lot of walking around central London, which I hadn’t seen yet since I’m staying a bit further out. We grabbed some chipotle for dinner- which is kind of comical to me that I’d get that on vacation. We saw the Tower of London, and walked over the Tower Bridge a couple of times. It was a really nice time spent!! Jenny was feeling tired which is so reasonable because she just arrived today, so she headed back to her hostel. Then I decided to walk from the centre of London all the way back to my hostel (2.5 hours walk ish). So I walked along South Bank, which is kind of by the water. Saw some street performers, and walked by many of the sightseeing-y things such as the London Eye and Big Ben! My feet and legs were very very tired by the end of the day. 45,784 steps in total today folks. After, I did a solid load of “laundry” which is just me washing my socks and underwear in the sink👍🏻👍🏻Leggi altro

      Back in London

      2 maggio 2023, Inghilterra ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

From Oxford, I took the train back to London. I‘m staying in a little apartment in Kensington. The neighborhood with the pretty white townhouses. After settling in I went to Camden Market. It‘s a market with many little shops of all kinds of sorts, jewelry, vintage clothing, art, and many more. As well as food stands.
After I took the underground to Buckingham Palace and I could see that preparations for the coronation of King Charles are being made. I walked to Westminster and looked at the church and the building of Parliament with Big Ben. Also called the Palace of Westminster. It is the meeting point for both houses, the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Across the river, I spotted Big Ben.
