    • ‘Cause we Can Can Can ☀️🍷🏨💃🏼

      June 23, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Slept in this morning and went across the road to Starbucks for a leisurely breakfast. We packed our bags and rolled across to Maidavale Marriot Hotel for a ‘Staycation’ treat 🍾

We purchased the package where we get free drinks 🍹 & nibbles from 530 to 830 and complimentary coffees & non alcoholic throughout the day. We have full access to the gym, pool and saunas which I spent a couple of hours making use of this afternoon. (Not the gym 🤫).

It has been so relaxing 😎 just to chill out and enjoy the luxurious atmosphere. I’d say we both deserve it after all the planning, activities & sightseeing.

The only downside is that we are surrounded by foghorn American 🇺🇸 folk 🫤👎🏻

      Everything else is lovely 🥰

6.30pm UPDATE! We are at the complimentary nibbles guess what? It’s hideous! I cannot tell a lie:

      Bags of crisps
      Green salad
      Chicken 🐔 nuggets (dry)
      Samosas (dry)
      Black Forest cake

The yanks are loving 🥰 it and DEMANDING more! We are drinking as much wine 🍷 as is humanly possible to block it (and them) out!
      🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
      🤨🤨🤨
      🤣🤣🤣
      🤮🤮🤮
One of the cranky yankies demanded lemon cake because “…I can’t eat chocolate 🍫 cake 🍰…”
      Fucking wanker! 👎🏻

So. Richard & I looked at each other and said: let’s get outta here and go see a musical 🎵 🎭

Within 10 minutes we had purchased great seats for MOULIN ROUGE, ran for the tube 🚇 and was at the Piccadilly Theatre 🎭 in the heart ❤️ of London in 15 minutes!

      …Because we CAN, CAN, CAN!

Unfortunately we could take pictures of everything else except the jewels (but have taken pics from the book) Incredible history here!!!
Thanks to Nicki and Mark for your generous hospitality and for taking the time to show us London over these last few days. We have had a fantastic time here!! and it has made us appreciate how old this city is.
It was also great to see Luka and Eva (and your 3rd Spoilt child Roxy (the dog).

      Full Circle

      June 1 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

I have gone full circle and arrived back in London ready for my journey home.
I went to the Royal Albert Hall last night hoping to catch a concert but nothing was on. It wasn’t even open to have a tour. It was also too late in the afternoon to visit any of the museums as by the time I would have got to the front of the entry queue it would be closing time. I had to settle for a walk in Hyde park in near storm conditions.
It has been a fabulous month and thank you for coming along on my unpredictable journey. Stay tuned for my next adventure.

      Flåm

      June 10 in England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

“Tourists don’t know where they’ve been, travellers don’t know where they’re going.” – Paul Theroux
Flåm is quite scenic. We managed to restrict ourselves to taking only 164 photos and videos in the 22 hours we were there, not all of which we plan to share with you.
Today (2nd June) we catch the Oslo train from Bergen, alight at Myrdal, then board the historic Flåm train. Very crowded. On the side of the train it says “One of the world’s most beautiful train journeys”. Hard to argue. The train line drops from about 900m at Myrdal to just above sea level at Flåm. One of the steepest in the world. It is 20km long and takes about an hour. Not fast. There’s a 5 minute stop at Kjosfossen to admire the waterfall. Spectacular, see video. There’s a dancer high up on the rocks and some haunting Norwegian music.
When we arrived at Flåm there were people milling around everywhere. Maybe because it is a sunny summer Sunday. We have an apartment booked for the night but check-in is not until 3pm. It is now about 1pm. The entry codes don’t work. We have a fjord cruise starting at 3pm and need to park our suitcases. Ursula phoned head office (in Oslo). They ‘changed the time zone’ then the code worked.
Flåm itself has the fjord in front but is ringed by steep mountains. Spectacular (overused word, but appropriate). It is actually like a holiday village with some shops, lots of accommodation, a big hotel a couple of restaurants and a food market with lots of temporary stalls.
Our 2 hour cruise goes down the Nærøyfjord to the little village of Gudvangen. Big electric catamaran with lots of people on board. Stunning scenery as we had expected. There’s a shuttle bus to take us back to Flåm.
The many tour buses have departed, taking most of the hordes. Flåm is now a lovely village. Very peaceful meal in the pub, followed by a restful night in our apartment, which is about 50m from the railway station, ready for our trip to Oslo tomorrow.

      London

      February 2 in England ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Second day in London did start with me doing my assignment which we didn't capture in photos (is on a tiktok later), but luckily I finished and we got to walk around. We went to St Dunstan in the East Church Garden which was a cool decrepit church. Next we went to a random church we found that had a cafe and a dog inside who is our new best friend. We visited St Paul's but we were too late for the tours. We went to Postman Park just for the Pat joke and some really sad plaques of heros. And finished with a Harry Potter store which Emily spend too much money in!Read more

      Frameless and The Gunpowder Plot

      May 26 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Today we went to an immersive art experience. It had all the classic art works, like The Scream, Starry Night, and The Persistence Of Memory. There were four rooms, which all had a different theme. One had artworks about the world around us, while another was abstract. My favourite room was interactive and was called Colour in Motion. There were screens on the ground and walls, which showed paintings. But every now and then, the artworks turned into dots, which went on to the floor, and when you walked, the dots parted.
We then went back to the hotel room, and Mama and Papa had a sleep.
We went back outside, and went to the underground, which we took to Tower Hill. When we got there we went and did a Interactive escape room like experience about the Gunpowder Plot. "Remember, Remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and a plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot". The Gunpowder Plot was an attempt to blow up parliament and King James the 1st in 1605 by the Catholics to bring an end to the Church of England . With the help of VR, we escaped from the Tower of London in a zipline with a chair. We then saved a Priest and helped with the plot. We met Guy Fawkes, who was the person who was found about to light the fuse. He was played by Tom Felton, who is the same person who plays Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter. My parents say it was him but he was only in the VR bit where we were taking the gunpowder to parliament by boat, and again when we went through time and saw the different ways the Brits celebrate The 5th of November, but I don't believe them. It was kind of scary, but also a lot of fun.
Tomorrow we go to the Tower of London,
      See you then,

      Lucca

When a woman is tired of London…

      June 12 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

2nd Eurostar journey complete, I headed to my hotel near Kings Cross to drop off my bag before hitting the nearby streets for a stroll. I was looking for a bookshop and discovered Word on the Water, a bookshop on a barge moored on the canal. Purchase made, I headed back to the hotel to await the arrival of Sarah and Gerard who kindly made the trip over from Battersea to meet me for dinner. We decided it would have been wrong to skip the 2 for 1 cocktails on offer in the hotel lounge, and may have ordered our 6 at once in order to meet the happy hour closing deadline. Pina Coladas et al quaffed, we walked a few steps to the immensely popular pizza place on the corner, queueing for around 30 minutes for our table. We were all getting pretty antsy and a touch hangry by the time we were finally let inside. Fortunately the food on offer was delicious, and we talked about everything and nothing as we ate our fill. All too soon it was time to say goodbye and S&G decided it was a good night for a stroll to Trafalgar Square - it was all I could do to stagger the few metres back to the hotel and retire to my small but perfectly formed room.

The next day Linda and I had planned to rendezvous for a fancy lunch at Fortnum and Mason at the Royal Exchange to kick off the Screaming Sixties World Tour in fine fashion. It’s a glorious building, actually the third to stand on the site. The first two were destroyed by fire in 1666 and 1838. That makes the current building a veritable whippersnapper opened by Queen Victoria in 1844. Having dispatched the obligatory champagne and a scotch egg or two, we went our separate ways, meeting up again at Searcy’s Champagne Bar at St Pancras. Home to the Press for Champagne button, Searcy’s is just the spot for traditions to be created. I visited here prior to my first journey northwards on the Caledonian Sleeper, and then introduced Linda to it when we were heading to Aberdeen on our way to Shetland. It was therefore an automatic inclusion on the agenda prior to heading to Euston to await the sleeper’s departure.

This may be my first visit to London in many years where a jaunt to Liberty wasn’t on the agenda. I knew I’d be unlikely to get out of there without at least one purchase and figured I probably didn’t need to lug anything extra to Scotland and back. Besides, there’s still time for another visit (or two) to London before heading home!

Stay tuned next time for the introduction of some new characters…The Mayors of Smugtown!
