      Erkältungspausentag 2/2

      September 11, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Danach gibt es wieder was zu Essen von Too Good to go.

      Manchester locally

      July 12, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

No trips today just getting out and about in local Manchester.

The girls went to Elizabeth Gaskell house which is an old Victorian property where Gail volunteers. Elizabeth was the owner and became a famous English writer. Regarded as ‘one of the greatest female novelists of all time’ Elizabeth Gaskell was born in 1810 and lived at 84 Plymouth Grove in Manchester with her family from 1850 until her death in 1865. Elizabeth welcomed guests such as Charles Dickens and Charlotte Bronte to her House and mixed with a cross section of Victorian society from the poor of the workhouse to the likes of Florence Nightingale and Charles Darwin.

Alan and I visited the Imperial War Museum which had a focus on how Manchester coped during the war.

Everything is quite local to their house which is on the river. You can see the Manchester United stadium not far away. If you have a lazy US$6 billion, they are for sale.

Further down from the museum is the Coronation Street set and filming studio. Yes, it is still in production!

Alan took me to The Britons Protection pub. It was the scene of a violent local political rally in 1904 where 15 demonstrators died. I was pleased to see my ancestor's whiskey on sale although I had a beer.

We passed the Midland hotel walking back into town. In the entrance was a 1939 Rolls Royce. This was the hotel where monsieur’s Charles Rolls and Henry Royce met for afternoon tea and decided to try their hand at building cars.

A quick stop at the state library and we then rendezvoused with the girls at Sam’s Chop House for a late lunch.

We had to back track to find a misplaced umbrella which became another excuse for another drop.

Home on a tram and relaxed to plan tomorrow. We will be on the move again.

    • Queer As Folk 🌈🕺🏼💃🏼🎉

      June 17, 2022 in England ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Lovely relaxing and leisurely morning walking into Ashbourne town for a ‘alf English breakfast. The UK is experiencing a heat wave 🥵 at the moment! How lucky can a guy get? ☀️It’s the top news 📰 story today! And, yes, it’s extremely hot 🔥 Because I have slowed down a bit I have noticed I’m quite exhausted 😴 The heat is very different here in the UK 🇬🇧 than back home so I’m just slowly trying to adjust.

Called into Buxton this afternoon: it’s an old spa town in the Peak District: Quaint shops and historic buildings. Bunting still up for the Jubilee! Love how patriotic & Proud the UK 🇬🇧 is!

Too many people have been telling me how cold 🥶 it is in Melbourne so I’ve called Qatar ✈️ and extended my Summer by a few more days! Thought it may be a long time between visits so I’d make the most of this while I’m able! You only live once I say ✊🏻

To celebrate 🎉 we hightailed it to Manchester for a night out on the Queer As Folk famed Canal Street… and oh ! What a night! ✔️

K-Y Kelly put on a fantastic show. And! What a fabulous drag name! 💃🏼

I was feeling very tired and melancholy this evening but it was very refreshing to be able to talk to Steven and Richard about this and discover they had similar feelings at different times. I am so often comforted to know other people are not 100% jubilant and happy 100% of the time! Social Media & facades represent a different view but I so much admire those who are strong enough to admit things can be hard sometimes. Those are MY people & I’m proud to be around them. Honest, real & open 🙏✊🏻

Regardless of the way I feel I am generally very able to pick myself up, take a look at the BIG picture and simply enjoy the moment. This is most certainly the way it was tonight 🕺🏼🙏🥰🎉There have only been a couple of these moments during this trip and I think it’s important to let people know that is okay & valid and it is human to feel this way. I handle my mental health very well as evidenced by the amazing experiences I’ve had this trip… ✊🏻👍🏻

I had an absolutely fantastic and joyous night. What an amazing place Manchester and Canal Street is… I have never in my world 🌎 travels found anything that matches the scope and complexity of this amazing GLBTIQA street! People were widely diverse, truly exclusive & honestly friendly, kind and welcoming. It was a pleasure to see and participate in that type of inclusive and honest behaviour.

As much as people may try and pretend that getting older isn’t a factor in the real world it actually is. There comes a time in the evening where crowds and loud music and extremely cramped environment become an effort rather than a pleasure. If you know when to draw the line you have a skill that is worth acknowledging and being proud of. 😝😍😇

An amazing 👏 night, and amazing street; amazing friends that made so much of an effort to help and create a wonderful evening of pure energy and effervescent fun!

It is been an absolute privilege to reacquaint myself with Richard and Steven. They have welcomed me into their home and lives and have been more than generous with their time and efforts in ensuring I have the best time… And, I certainly have! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to both of them! 👍🏻✊🏻🥰❤️🕺🏼😘 🇬🇧☀️❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

      Counting mistake

      July 8, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

      Miles: 3.6 Steps: 8825
      Flights stairs: 8

Well we’ve traveled thru 15 countries so far - 13 flights, 9 trains, 10 long distance buses and 3 ferry’s … all without a hitch. But this week I discovered my first mistake. We’re under the Schengen Visa which allows us to travel freely throughout Europe for exactly 90 days. I had checked my days and double checked them - but I forgot to count a travel day from Norway to London as being in the EU. I put it down as just a London day, even tho I spent half the day in Norway. Big Woops. If I let it go, that would put us in Europe for 91 days and be in violation of our visa. Google is torn - some say I could be fined, or even barred from ever returning. Some say, the immigration officer won’t even notice. But Jordan and I being fairly cautious decided to not push it.

So today we had to extend our time in England one more day and not head to Germany as we had planned, cutting our time in Munich by one day, which is a bummer, but figured better safe than sorry.

We had to change our flight from today to tomorrow, and the only flight available to do that was out of Manchester! So … we jumped on a bus and rode north 5 hours so we can fly out tomorrow for Germany, and guarantee we will only be in Europe exactly 90 days.

Was a hassle but thankfully the UK buses are great and very inexpensive .. so no worries. But, nothing to really show of our day as the countryside didn’t look much different than the US to be honest, once we got out of London.

      Erkältungspausentag 1/2

      September 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Manchester - Family History Day 1

      January 5, 2020 in England ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

Today was dedicated to finding family headstones. With good planning it turned out to be easier than anticipated. Dottie and Adel have good memories of locations and combined with maps and the internet the headstones were easily located. At Southern Cemetery area U-2141 Isabella Occelston is my g-g-grandmother. John Weedall and Isabella Weedall are my g-grandparents.
At Saint Winfreds church are the markers for Grandpa George and Grandma Clare (Clara). These are the people that I knew as a child.

Also made another new friend Jennie Roberts. She is a member of the church and grew up in Manchester on Crown Street. Her family owned Massey Chip Shop. Visited with her and had a cup of tea. She had extra memories of the area and the town. Another wonderful connection to Manchester.

Monday I’m heading to the Manchester library to hunt old maps and photos of the places the family lived.

Finished the evening with Sunday Roast.

      Chatsworth day trip

      July 11, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We are heading out to drive to Chatsworth. It will be a fairly long drive, maybe an hour or so. The new Kia EV6 is fully charged and off we go.

The countryside is lush and green, you can’t help but be impressed by all the stonewall fences.

From the moment you enter the estate grounds it is jaw dropping how beautiful and grand this piece of history is and we couldn’t wait to look inside.

Chatsworth House was home to the Dukes & Duchess’s Devonshire family and has been passed down through 16 generations. They are all at rest buried in a nearby village at the St Peter’s church. The property came into the family after being purchased by Sir William Cavendish for £600 in 1549, who then began building on the grounds.

Kings and Queens visited here, and, in that era, it was all about decadence and wealth that was on display to all that visited. It is just an amazing place to visit.

For the Pride & Prejudice fans this mansion featured in the movie and tv series.

There are over 25 rooms in the stately home including the Painted Hall, State Rooms, Sculpture Gallery as you walk through discovering its art, history and all about the family.

The ceiling art defies belief. In every room there are staff to tell you the story of the family.

Each Duke wanted to make it bigger and grander than the previous generations, leaving their mark on one of Derbyshire’s finest country houses.

There were just so many stunning pictures to be taken it will be hard to settle in the top 10.

We spent several hours walking through and then we covered the grounds too. The weather has been a bit unkind today, but it didn’t dampen our experience.

The emperor water fountain works on gravity and the fountain steps are amazing.

Before we headed back to Manchester, we had to stop at the Devonshire Arms for a locally brewed pint.

Gail cooked up a home cooked feast and we settled in watching episodes of Pride & Prejudice so we could say “we were there today”.

      Manchester not by the Sea

      April 20 in England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Manchester

      February 20 in England ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

While wandering around Manchester I came upon the London School of Barbering and decided it was a good time to give some kid a chance to practice his skills. Turned out to be such a fun time. The kid was great — really good sense of humor — and he told me all about the city and the best places to visit, including where to get the best pizza.Read more

      Museum Hopping and 'Lovely Weather'

Spent the day visiting Manchester's various museums; Castlefield Urban Heritage Park, the Science and Industry Museum (at a location that used to be a textiles loading dock and has the first computer "Baby"), the People's History Museum, and (my suprise favourite) the National Football Museum. Was told by some locals that the partly cloudy, misty rain and wind was 'Lovely weather' to explore Manchester (😶).

Fun Fact of the Day: Waterproof Fabric was Invented in Manchester by Charles Macintosh adding Rubber to Cotton to create himself a jacket to wear in the rain.
