      Exploring Seattle

      Spent the day exploring the shady streets of Seattle. The space tower gave great views over the city but they insist on telling you it was only supposed to be there for 6 months which makes you feel somewhat nervous given that that was a long time ago. Walked around an art exhibit to make ourselves feel more cultured. Many sights seen, many snacks eaten.Läs mer

      Raus aus Lateinamerika geht es für uns in die USA. Bevor mit Hawaii das nächste große Highlight ansteht haben wir uns für Seattle als Zwischenstopp entschieden.

      Mit 6° und fast dauerhaftem Regen war das Wetter eine willkommene Abwechslung - reicht dann aber auch wieder 😁.

      Seattle ist die Gründungsstadt und der Hauptsitz von Amazon, neben 40 Bürogebäuden und den Amazon Sphere erprobt Amazon hier auch mehrere Amazon Go Supermärkte. Supermärkte in die man mit einem QR Code der Amazon App hineingehen kann, sich die Sachen herausnimmt und ohne Kasse wieder gehen kann.

      Die Abrechnung läuft durch Kameras die jeden Schritt verfolgen.

      Das bekannteste Wahrzeichen Seattles ist definitiv die Space Needle - da das Wetter zu wünschen übrig lies haben wir darauf verzichtet hinauf zu fahren.      Läs mer

      15,000 steps around Seattle!

      We started our day with the Pike Place Market Food Tour with Jonathan from Eat Seattle.

      We went on a journey through the Pacific Northwest by tasting Seattle’s best artisan vendors in the famous Pike Place Market.

      Our menu for the next 2 hours was: Chicken Tinga tacos
      Maple Candy Salmon Jerky
      Cultured Greek Gelato
      Clam Chowder
      Fresh margarita pizza
      White truffle and pesto crostini
      Black truffle and pepper crostini
      Noccialata hazelnut spread
      Pit Smoked Pulled Pork
      Blackened Cajun Salmon
      Chocolate Cherries

      My favourites were definitely the tacos, pulled pork and chocolate cherries! We learnt a lot about the market's history - for example, you have to start your first shop there so places like McDonalds or Subway have no chance to take a spot from the locals! Starbucks did have their first shop there and went on to become internationally known worldwide. Jonathan was also the perfect guide, making it fun and informative along the way.

      We headed downtown to the monorail for the next part of our day, and started with the Chihuly Garden & Glass gallery.

      The eight galleries and three Drawing Walls of the Exhibition Hall offer a comprehensive collection of Dale Chihuly’s significant series of work. The artworks demonstrate how he pushed the boundaries of glass as an art medium in concept, execution and presentation.

      The work was truly beautiful and in the garden it was displayed in a way that made it look like it was part of nature. Definitely a must see!

      Right next door was the famous Space Needle.

      Built as the centrepiece and inspiration for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, the Space Needle has since become a part of the Seattle experience and the globally recognized icon for the city. Standing 184 meters/605 feet tall, the Space Needle gives visitors unparalleled views of Seattle and beyond through its “floor-to-forever” glass walls and the world’s first revolving glass floor.

      We went all the way to the top in the lift that gave us spectacular views of the city, all glass fronted walls which were fantastic to see the whole of Seattle. The revolving glass bottomed floor was interesting but we all braved it and jumped on!

      Just a short walk through the park was the Museum of Pop Culture

      The Museum of Pop Culture is a leading-edge nonprofit museum, dedicated to the ideas and risk-taking that fuel contemporary popular culture. At MoPOP, artists, audiences and ideas converge, bringing understanding, interpretation, and scholarship to the popular culture of our time.

      We didn't have lot of time here so I chose to focus on the Nirvana and grunge room..taking me back to my teenage years in the 90s. And then went on to find the popular film, fantasy and horror sections. I nearly didn't make it through the horror part..pretty much ran through the display!

      We grabbed a Lyft.. Seattle's version of Uber and headed across to Fremont Brewery.

      Fremont Brewery is a family-owned craft brewery founded in 2009 to brew small-batch artisan beers made with the best local ingredients we can find. Their slogan is 'Because Beer Matters!'

      I'm not a beer drinker but they had a lovely..and very boozy..blackcurrant and blueberry cider on tap so I had one of those.

      A great stop before we walked through Gas Works Park.

      Gas Works Park has beautiful sweeping views of the city and Lake Union. It contains remnants of a coal gasification plant, the last of its kind in the United States. The plant operated from 1906 to 1956, but is now an iconic fixture in Seattle's landscape. The park made an appearance in the movie 'Ten Things I Hate About You' and the 'Sleepless in Seattle' house can also be seen from the hill for all the movie fans.

      Our last stop was dinner at Pablo y Pablo in the Fremont district.

      Pablo y Pablo is a Mexican restaurant and bar whose menu uses ingredients and techniques from around the world. Pablo y Pablo aims to give a genuine dining experience to guests that’s as warm and energised as the food, and it certainly does that. Our server was Ismael from Barcelona and he was fantastic! Top class customer service, genuinely interested in us as a group and was able to recommend different dishes and cocktails..he even remembered that one of the girls couldn't have diary and ordered the things she could have so she didn't miss out..amazing end to a full and fun day!       A day trip to Seattle

      We were up at what felt like the crack of dawn today to go and pick up a rental car and headed straight for Seattle! When we arrived we headed straight to Pike Street Market for some lunch and then went to the Space Needle. It was fun to see the city from up there and there’s even a revolving floor which is cool, but also messes with your head a bit!

      After that we went to the museum of pop culture which was really interesting, before going for a walk to the Olympic park and along the Pier to watch the sunset and ferry boats (Grey’s anatomy fans will know the significance!) We enjoyed some locally caught fish for dinner, grabbed a coffee from the original Starbucks before driving back to Vancouver! We really could have don with another day or two to see more of the city but it was still a really great day trip.

      We arrived pretty late and have another early start tomorrow morning... 😴      Läs mer

      Sightseeing in Seattle: The Seattle Dog

      When it comes to hotdogs, Haukur is a connoisseur. On top of his list for Seattle was to try the Seattle Dog, a hotdog topped with cream cheese and sautéed onions and served in a pretzel bun.

      “ Schlaflos in Seattle “

      Entspannt ohne Gepäck direkt durch die Sicherheitskontrolle mit genügend Zeitpuffer warteten wir auf den Abflug. Nach 9 Std 45 Flug nach Seattle, mit toller Sicht über Grönland, aber mit 48 Minuten Verspätung (MEZ 1:30) blieb uns nur noch eine knappe Stunde, um unseren Anschlussflug nach Honolulu zu bekommen. Die Minuten flossen dahin, als wir im Flieger noch auf der Landebahn stehen blieben.
      Beim Ausstieg waren wir schnell, um den weiten Weg zum Customs zurückzulegen, was aber nichts nützte, da man zuerst das Gepäck holen musste. Unseres dauerte und dauerte, so dass unser Vorsprung vor den anderen schwand. Schließlich mussten wir uns mit dem sperrigen Gepäck in eine endlose Schlange anstellen, um an einen von nur 3 Schalter zu gelangen. Auch das Anfragen nach einer“ fast lane“ nutzte nichts, wir hörten nur ein "sorry“. Nun waren es nur noch 35 Minuten bis Abflug und wir standen noch immer mit dem gesamten Gepäck in der Schlange. Endlich kamen wir dran. Der Officer war lustig, was uns aber mit dem Zeitproblem nichts half. Alle 10 Fingerabdrücke wurden genommen, dann waren wir durch. Nur noch 25 Minuten.
      Unser Gepäck musste nun wieder aufgegeben werden. Meins war schon auf dem Band, dann holten sie es wieder runter, da es am Schalter von Alaska Airlines abgegeben werden musste. Dem Mitarbeiter fiel es 2x vom Wagen. Aber irgendwann hatten wir es dann auf dem richtigen Band, aber nicht mit der Gewissheit, dass wir es noch schafften, den Flieger zu kriegen. Vorher nochmals durch die Sicherheitskontrolle.
      Wieder eine Schlange, aber da fragte ich alle vor uns, es waren nicht wenige, ob sie uns vorlassen, da unser Flug in 20 Minuten ging. No problem. Das Band rechts machte gerade zu. Links klappte es, aber Gürtel ab, Jacke aus, Schuhe aus, EBook raus, Flüssigkeiten raus. Dann wechselte auch noch die Crew, wieder kostbare Minuten. Gott sei Dank ging das Handgepäck ohne Verzögerung durch. Schuhe und Gürtel an, EBook und Flüssigkeiten einpacken, Jacke schnappen und run zum Alaska Airlines Gate D 8. Es war genau am anderen Ende und dort auch noch am letzten Gate. Wir rannten und rannten, wir waren erst bei A. Oh Gott, wie weit es war. Mein Knie musste durchhalten. Immer mal wieder zwischendurch gehen. Der Schweiß lief schon. Endlich in Sicht, Martin war schon am Einchecken. Geschafft!!! Aber ob es das Gepäck geschafft hat, wissen wir nicht. Jetzt erstmal 5 Std 25 Flug nach Honolulu. Mittlerweile ist es 4:16 MEZ. Ich habe noch keine Minute geschlafen.
      Es gab kleine Snacks und Getränke, dann konnte ich endlich schlafen. Pünktliche Landung. Leider war unser Gepäck nicht dabei. Nach 18 Stunden unterwegs noch Verlustmeldung machen, danach das Auto abholen, was einfach war. Aber Martin hatte seine Tasche wieder beim Baggage Claim stehen lassen. Auch das wurde gelöst, so dass wir endlich zum Hotel Ewa fahren konnten. Nur zuerst musste man noch herausfinden, wie man ohne Schlüssel das Auto startet. Gut, dass Martin sich auskennt, denn ohne Navi ging es nun zum Hotel.      Läs mer

      We managed to get parked right next to the Space Needle. The fountains outside were lovely.
      Took a while to get up to the top because of the queues. It was undergoing building work last time I was here. The changes were lovely. Big glass panels all around the viewing floor.
      There was a revolving glass floor on the level below. It was strange walking on the glass. Takes an hour for a full circuit around.      Läs mer

      Ich bi gester am Nomitag am 15.00 in Seattle acho und ha höt Morge am 5i de Zug zum Flughafe müsse verwütsche....das ged ned bsunders viel Ziit. Aber imerhin gnueg für ehn Stadt-spaziergang 😅.

      Uf mim Wäg zum de Banhof sueche bin ich am Public Market und no vielne andere chline Sehenswürdigkeite verbi cho. Woni de Bahnhof gfonde gha han (mit vielne Umwäg wells so viel z gseh gäh hed) bini no zum Space Needle gloffe.

      Am Obig bin ich d StandUp comedishow im Hostel go luege und bin denn nomol churz durd Stadt gloffe.

      Jetzt hock ich grad am Flughafe und warte uf min Flug uf Hawaii :)      Läs mer

      Sightseeing in Seattle

      Mit der Fähre fahre ich heute nach Seattle, die größte Stadt Washingtons. Ich möchte eine kleine Sightseeing Tour machen. Als allererstes mache ich mich auf den Weg zu einem riesengroßen Indoor Markt mit unglaublich vielen unterschiedlichen Geschäften - dem Pike Place Market. Dort trinke ich einen Frappuchino im ältesten Starbucks der Welt.
      Nächste Sehenswürdigkeit ist die Space Needle, ein 184 m hoher Turm mit Aussichtsplattform, auf die ich heute nicht gehe, da das Wetter keine gute Aussicht zulässt. Der Turm wurde für die Weltaustellung 1962 erbaut. Um aus dem Zentrum dorthin zu gelangen wurde ebenfalls eine Einschienen-Bahn (Monorail) gebaut, die bis heute fährt. Zurück nach Downtown fahre ich also mit der Bahn und genieße eine wunderschönen Aussicht auf die Stadt. Dort schlender ich noch durch die Shoppingstraßen.
      Zum krönenden Abschluss des Tages genieße ich in einem Restaurant mit Meerblick eine berühmte Suppe die Clam Chouder.
      Gut gesättigt geht es mit der Fähre und einem herrlichen Ausblick auf das nun durch Lichter hellerleuchtete Seattle zurück nach Bainbridge Island.      Läs mer
