      Shirley House BBQ

      Funny how things work out, if we hadn’t had a couple of problems, we’d never have been in Idaho Falls this Memorial Day and we’d never have met the lovely Shirley family, who kindly invited us to their house for a BBQ.
      They live in the foothills to the east of the city with great views. Dan and Janice made us feel very welcome and we had a wonderful evening chatting with their family and friends. Great food and the odd drink or few. Stew and Dan also had a common interest..... Malt Whisky 🥃.      Read more

      Yellowstone < Idaho Falls

      Nach 2 super Tagen war heute der beschissenste der ganzen Reise. Ich wollte eig 2 Tage in Yellowstone verbringen. Der Park ist an sich super schön, aber im groben Ganzen habe ich auf meiner Reise eine solche Landschaft schon gesehen. Aber die paar Sachen, die besonders sind, wie die Geysire, die Hotsprings und der Canyon sind überlaufen mit verkackten Mongotouristen.
      Das Problem ist im Gegensatz zu den anderen Parks. Man kann mit dem Auto bis zu den entsprechenden Stellen fahren und muss sich nicht bewegen. So stellt man sich erstmal in einer Autoschlange an und kann dann nichtmal den Ort genießen, weil er aus allen Nähten platzt. Den Geysir und die Hotsprings habe ich dann noch geschafft☝️
      Als ich mich dann aber 30-60 Minuten in eine Autoschlange stellen sollte, um auf den Parkplatz zu dem Canyon zu kommen, hatte ich keine Lust mehr und ich bin direkt die 3 std nach Idaho Falls gefahren, wo ich eig erst Morgen ankommen sollte.

      Ich weiß es ist Sonntag, da ist mehr los. Es kommt noch hinzu, dass ich von den letzten Tagen im Arsch war, aber ich hab den Park einfach gefressen und bin jetzt hier im Hotel und ruhe mich Morgen einfach aus. Alexej holt mich hier Dienstag ab, wir müssen dann aber noch 12-13 std fahren. Also ist nen Tag Chillen ganz gut. Also wenn morgen nichts neues kommt, ich habe gechillt.

      Ich freue mich riesig auf die Woche in Kanada bei Alex. Endlich mal ne Woche sesshaft und keinen Zwang was zu planen, zumindest für mich 😜

      Wie die Kartoffel die Welt verändert hat

      Nach der "Mondlandung" war die letzte Station Blackfoot. Warum Blackfoot denkt sich vielleicht der eine oder andere? Tja ganz einfach... hier befindet sich nämlich ein "Potatoe Museum. Ja genau richtig gelesen. Ein ganzes Museum das sich rund um eine der beliebtesten Speisebeilage, Partysnack oder als fancy Hauptgericht die letzten Jahrhunderte unsere Gaumenzapfen richtig "klingeln" ließen.
      Die Kartoffel oder in meiner Heimat auch liebevoll "Erdapferl" genannt ist nämlich ein richtiger Hit und das weltweit. Idaho deckt ja, wie bereits erwähnt über 30% des Anbaus der in der USA verschickten Kartoffeln ab. Schon interessant, dass es über 50 Jahre dauerte bis die genießbare Kartoffel von einem spanischen Eroberer, Francisco Pizarro, über Südamerika nach Europa und schließlich in die Vereinigten Staaten gekommen ist. Naja damals schrieb man auch das Jahr 1570 und da war Reisen noch eine etwas trägere Geschichte. Das die Chips nur aus der Not heraus erschaffen wurden,weil Kunden in einem Restaurant keine "french fries" wollten, es die Sorten "Russian Banana" "French Fingerling" und "Purple Peruvian" gibt, Idaho alleine über 5000Tonnen Kartoffeln erntet oder dieses Supergemüse es bereits sogar auf den Mars geschafft hat ist ja nur eine Seite der Kartoffel. 😊 Fakt ist, auch dieses Lebensmittel sollte man nicht als selbstverständlich hinnehmen. Die Menschen in Idaho haben als erste nämlich eine tolle Ernte und Transportmaschine erfunden die es den Bauern um einiges erleichtert hat im richtig großen Stil zu ernten. Vielleicht denkt ihr darüber nach wenn ihr das nächste Mal in ein gutes Braterdapferl, die knusprigen Chips oder zum Burger ein paar Pommes genießt. 😊

      Die nächste Attraktion auf dem Weg zur nächsten Unterkunft führte uns dann auch bei den "Idaho Falls" in Idaho Falls vorbei. Ein künstlich angelegter Wasserfall der sich über die Stadt streckt uuund gleichzeitig als Energiequelle dient. Geniale Idee nachdem der der Staudamm gebrochen war und eine Überflutung die Folge dessen war. 😊

      Der Rest der Fahrt ist einfach alles nur nicht in Worte zu fassen...den es ging in einen neuen Bundesstaat...Montana...aber das ist eine andere Geschichte. 😊      Read more

      Beer Tasting

      Abandoned trip to Grand Teton NP as it was raining and chilly when we drove there last Tuesday, we couldn’t even see the mountains !! We also were going to be boondocking with no electric and when we started the diesel Aquahot heating it was spitting out black smoke.
      So we drove down in elevation and found a RV service place in Idaho Falls. Our step decided to stop working and they needed to order a part and of course it’s Memorial Day Monday so the part will not be here till Tuesday. Or Wednesday.
      So we find ourselves parked in Snake River RV Park drinking beer on a Sunday evening. Life throws spanners in the works, but it’s still good.      Read more

      Cedar Brakes/SLC und Idaho

      …pjuuu was für ein Tag! Nicht nur das uns der Anblick im Cedar Brake National Monument Park echt die Sprache verschlagen hat sondern der Weg über Salt Lake City uns endlich nach Idaho gebracht hat und die ersten paar Meter in diesem „neuen“ Bundesstaat schon wirklich sehr beeindruckte 😃 aber alles der Reihe nach.

      Nach einem ausgewogenen Frühstück ging die Reise gegen 8:00 Uhr los in Richtung National Monument. Die Spannung und stieg und die Temperatur sank ziemlich auf knapp 3400m runter…ist nur etwas komisch,wenn man mit Flip Flops und kurzer Kleidung bei ca. 7C da steht und eigentlich nebenbei einen Schneemann bauen könnte 😄
      Man lacht und macht einfach weiter! ☺️
      Ein Weg musste gemacht werden deswegen ging es danach gleich hoch Richtung Salt Lake City wo uns auch schon ein leichter Regenschauer entgegen „lächelte“ nichts desto trotz war der Anblick des Capitols ein richtig eindrückliches Erlebnis und generell hat Utah einiges zu bieten. So schöne abwechselnde Natur…unglaublich. Schon interessant,dass es die Mormonen sind, die sich hier um 1850 angesiedelt haben und somit Utha auch der Mormonenstaat Nr.1 ist. Das heutige Ziel hieß jedoch Idaho zu erreichen und das haben wir nach 800km wohlgesonnen erreicht. Mal sehen was nun die nächsten Tage bringen werden…Chasing the sun ist die Devise! ☺️ drückt uns die Daumen 😊      Read more

      Hot stuff.

      200 miles or so of driving. A supposedly closed stretch of motorway pushed us towards an alternative route which went via the Craters of the Moon National Park. Sounded a suitable stop off - some walks & a markedly different landscape to anything we'd encountered before - volcanic outcrops, craters and lava flows. The initial drive was more interesting than a motorway but in no time at all we were back to long endless plains - as per normal. Approaching the national park we passed through lava fields which uncannily looked like endless piles of black rubble. Hopefully the park would be a little more distinctive than that. Judging by the visitor centre and how busy it was a lot people were expecting the same. The queue to pay was the biggest we've seen so far. Didn't bode well. The first walk - no space at the car park. The second & we were fortunate - the devil's orchard was a series of weird shaped lava outcrops and numerous negative placards about pollution. Might consider getting people out of the cars & instigating a shuttle bus system like every other national park we've been to. Next two car parks were full so no climbs up the cinder cones & the one way system meant a 5 mile round trip to have another go. Certainly was distinctive & striking scenery but the sheer weight of traffic spoiled it somewhat. Still we didn't pay so can't complain too much. Headed off to Idaha Falls & as Liz was heading towards a satisfying doze I was intrigued by a Historic Monument sign - EBR1 - curious - had to investigate which unfortunately meant a u-turn. She awoke to find us heading towards some form of nuclear museum. She wasn't impressed. Even less so when we were stopped by a soldier. Fortunately I wasn't in any more trouble - he was just helping out - they were rammed with all the post eclipse traffic. Anyway we parked up and she tolerated a self guided tour of the first generating nuclear power plant in the world. Hopefully we wouldn't leave glowing...Read more

      Memorial Day

      After the loop we ride our bikes to Freeman Park where there is a ‘Field of Honor’ and an event for Memorial Day. On our way in Stew asked a guy on his bike (Dan Shirley) if we were going the right way and another chance meeting leads to a memorable afternoon and evening.
      We walk through the flags representing local military personnel who lost their lives in war, it is very moving. Good to hear the pipes and drums of the Teton and District Pipe Band and see some Scottish dancing.
      Finished off the afternoon with a pint of Caber Toss a Scottish style ale at the Tap-n-Fill as recommended by the Shirley family (Dan, Janice, Elise, Josh & Austin) who we joined on the patio.      Read more
