      Schnee, Eis, Sand oder Gips ?

      Irgendwie von allem etwas, aber am meisten Gips.
      Die White Sands ist ein Gipsfeld von 712 km2 Größe. Es liegt auf 1200 m und bildet den tiefsten Punkt in einem riesigen Becken, dem Tularose-Becken.

      Es geht eine 13 km lange Straße in die Dünen. Die Dünen sehen aus wie aus Sand, nur sind sie weiß, aber wenn man darin läuft sind sie viel härter. Auch fühlt es sich ganz anders an, wenn man mit der Hand versucht in den Sand (Gips) zu greifen.

      Wir sind ungefähr 3 Stunden dort und erleben wie schnell sich hier das Wetter ändert. Konnten wir am Anfang noch alle umliegenden Berge sehr gut sehen, waren sie auf einmal hinter dem aufwirbelnden Gibskörnchen verschwunden.

      Auch der Farbkontrast von den weißen Dünen zu den dunklen Bergen war außergewöhnlich.

      #Camping 5 - White Sands

      Auf dem Weg von Big Bend zum White Sands National Park fahren wir an der Holloman Air Force Base vorbei. Es dauert ca. 15 Minuten um von Anfang bis zum Ende der Basis zu fahren. In dieser Zeit sehen wir: 16 Panzer auf der Straße, 4 Apache Kampfhubschrauber in der Luft, diverse Flugzeuge und Artillerie Geschütze. Zudem sehen wir wie neue Raketen zum Stützpunkt gebracht werden, den hier ist auch ein Raketen Test Gebiet. Es ist erstaunlich was alles aufgeboten wird und das obwohl die Militärbasis einer der kleinsten der USA ist.

      In den White Sand Dunes angekommen staunen wir nicht schlecht. Der Sand ist tatsächlich komplett weiß und es sieht aus wie eine Schneelandschaft. Die weiße Farbe verdankt der Sand den nahegelegene Gipsvorkommen. Der Sand fühlt sich auch eher wie eine Gipsplatte an, weniger wie der klassische feinkörnige Sand am Meer. Gerade als wir im Nationalpark ankommen beginnt der Sonnenuntergang und das Farbspiel am Himmel ist einzigartig. Da ich es nicht akkurat beschreiben kann, lass wir einfach die Bilder sprechen. Da wir uns einfach nicht losreißen können, bauen wir auch heute das Zelt im Dunkeln auf. Schon wieder. Aber wir wurden mit einer riesigen Sternschnuppe belohnt, die sich über den halben Himmel gezogen hat.      Read more

      White Sands National Park

      Une fois partis de El Paso (dans laquelle on n'a fait finalement que passer), on roule une bonne heure jusqu'à White Sands National Park. Nous quittons le grand état du Texas pour celui du Nouveau Mexique. Ce parc, considéré comme un monument est unique en son genre. Sur plusieurs kilomètres carrés, au pied des montagnes, un désert de sable blanc comme neige. Quelques petites randonnées sont possibles entre les dunes et Julien fait l'une d'entre elles pieds nus dans le sable. Il est possible de louer des luges pour descendre les dunes. En fonction de l'orientation de celles-ci, soit on s'enfonce dans le sable, soit il se fige et devient dur comme de la pierre. Malgré l'aridité du lieu, des buissons subsistent et servent de refuge à de petits insectes. Grégoire trouve même des lézards : un bleu, magnifique, et un blanc presque invisible sur le sol de la même couleur. Après avoir déjeuné, on reprend la route. On croise très peu arbres et encore moins d'eau. Les étendues de terres inhabitées nous paraissent de plus en plus grandes. Mais la végétation évolue au fil des heures, les roches changent de couleurs. Les sols aussi, parfois lisses, parfois tapissés d'herbe rase comme de la moquette. Au loin on entrevoit des champs d'éoliennes. Pour passer le temps, on s'amuse, entre autres, à compter le nombre de wagons des trains de marchandises que l'on croise (record à battre 226 wagons avec 5 locomotives !), et qui font, lorsqu'ils sont dans le même sens que nous, un bout de chemin à nos côtés. Au fur et à mesure de notre remontée vers le nord, la température se rafraîchit. Pour cause, nous sommes maintenant à plus de 2000m d'altitude. On s'arrête pour la nuit à Santa Fe, la première ville sur notre route depuis plusieurs heures.Read more

      🇨🇭: de Tag het echt kacke gstartet. Nacht isch de Horror gsi….❄️ es sind 0 Grad dusse gsi und mir hend im Auto kei Heizig😬
      Die ganz Nacht kei Aug zuetue und sich de Arsch abgfrore….
      Am morge hemmer üs zerst mol uf dsurchi nach nem Heizkörper gmacht, mir sind i 5 verschiedene Läde gsi bis mir endli eine gfunde hend.
      Nochdem simmer chli de Route 66 entlang gfahre zu de Cadillace Ranche (zu dem in nem andere Footprint)
      Nochane hemmer üs uf de 5 1/2 h fahrt gmacht nach New Mexico zum white sands national park. Und es isches definitiv wert gsi😍 vo wittem hets usgseh wie Schnee aber es isch eifach schneewiise Sand gsi.
      Mir hend denn sglück gha das gad Sunneuntergang gsi isch und da isch eifach mega gsi!

      🇺🇸: the day starts terrible. The night was the horror…❄️ outside was 0 degres and we haven‘t a heater inside the car. We haven‘t sleep the whole night.
      The first thing we do in the morning was to search a heater for the car. After 5 diffrent shops we finally find one🥳
      After this start in the day we are driving the route 66 and visit the cadillace ranche. ( you will see it on the other footprint)
      After this we was driving for 5 1/2 hours to new mexico to the white sands national park.
      it was really worth it!😍
      It looks like snow but its just snow white sand.
      We are lucky that we was there when the sum goes down. This was amazing      Read more

      The sand is made of gypsum (Gips) that formed when shallow lakes evaporate every dry season, over millions of years… no sun today, but the white ones against the dark sky creates an incredible effect.       Nach den Caverns ging es direkt zum White Sands National Monument. Um dort hinzukommen bin ich nicht über El Paso gefahren, sondern habe die 20 Minuten in Kauf genommen und habe die Strecke durch den "Lincoln National Forest" genommen, das sich zum Schluss als richtige Passstraße entpuppte. Somit habe ich Texas vorerst verlassen und befinde mich in New Mexico. Sobald ich in dem Park war und las, dass dieser bis 8 Uhr geöffnet hat, war für mich klar, ich bleib bis zum Sonnenuntergang. Die knapp 4 Stunden, die ich dort verbrachte, haben sich auf jeden Fall gelohnt. Auch wenn ich definitiv kein Fan von Sand-Wanderungen werde. Es ist anstrengender als "normale" Wanderungen, was zusätzlich an der Hitze liegt, aber auch das ständige einsinken und dann die Hügel hoch & runter, hat es auf Dauer in sich.Read more

      Haben an einem verseuchten See, an dem man das Wasser nicht berühren soll, übernachtet. Ringsum eine Air Force Base und ein Raketenstartplatz. Einfach typisch USA. War trotzdem schön.
      Am nächsten Tag sind wir in den White Sands Nationalpark gefahren. Der Name verspricht nicht zu viel. Weißer Sand soweit das Auge reicht. Bisschen wie an der Nordsee hier. Oder wie im Skigebiet. Hier fahren extra Schulklassen her um Schlitten zu fahren.
      Dann haben wir noch einen Abstecher ins Pistacio Land gemacht und uns durchprobiert.      Read more

      White Sands National Park (New Mexico)

      During our Hueco Tanks stay, we planned to do one or two rest days depending on how we felt after bouldering a couple of days. We had several options with White Sands National Park leading the list.
      Unfortunately we had one thing to do before driving there: getting a tire repair. The last two weeks we had already refilled the air in our left rear tire three times, but the pressure never lasted more than a few hundred miles. We called the Roadside Assistance of our rental company and they told us to go to a tire repair shop. In the USA many roads are unpaved and even the paved roads are often in a bad state, so tire repairs are a common thing to do and there are tons of repair shops everywhere. We drove into El Paso, got our tire repaired in roughly an hour and payed just 20 $ for it!

      Two hours later we arrived at White Sands and it was insanely hot. We put on a lot of sunscreen and long clothes and went on a backcountry hike into the white dunes. At the visitor center they sold small sleds, but they were quite expensive and we thought we wouldn't really need one, but when we left the visitor center, a family just put 5 sleds next to the entrance for everyone to take. They were gone immediately, but we were at the right place at the right time and captured one of them!
      After just a few minutes of walking away from the parking area, we were completely surrounded by white dunes and couldn't see any car anymore, just a few people here and there on one of the other dunes. We inspected the footprints in the sand and realized that some people were walking barefoot. Up to that point we hadn't touched the sand and expected it to be really hot considering the permanent sun exposure, but it was actually cold! We took off our shoes and continued barefoot, which was really pleasant.
      After 2 hours of hiking and sledding, we returned to the car and drove to the sunset ranger tour, where we learned a lot about the vegetation and the people that lived in the area.
      In 2018 one of the dunes moved and one of the rangers noticed patterns in the ground that looked like human footprints. He informed others and soon scientists were inspecting these footprints. They found hundreds of them, perfectly conserved. In 2021 a study dated the origin of these footprints back 21.000-23.000 years. The age was confirmed by a second study, just days before we went to the National Park. Before this study the common understanding was that humans inhabited the Americas after the last ice age, thus approximately 14.000 years ago. Some scientists had claimed to have found traces of human live that they thought to be older, but they couldn't substantiate those theories with real evidence. With these new studies there seems to be some controversy and discussion in the scientific community according to our tour guide. The big question is now: how did they cross the ocean if not over the Bering Strait?      Read more

      Fa Carlsbad Caverne siwer am Morgo früeh witer nach Alamogordo in New Mexiko gfahro. Da heiwer de zersch im Camping igitscheggt (diz mal heiwernisch eppis gunnt ver zwei Nächt 😉). Derna siwer diräkt zum White Sands National Monument gfahro. Da heiwer e paar churzi Spaziergäng uber die endlose wisse Sanddüne gmacht. Äs isch sehr beeidrucked gsi, will eifach 20 Minüte fame Städji ewäg iner eher karge Wieschti ufzmal en rieso grossi Flächi wisse Sand isch, wa üsgseht wie Schnee. Wills de aber eso gwinde hed und chalt isch gsi heiwer deicht wier geh zersch mal ga z Nacht ässo. D Luscht ufne Burger häd nisch beidi packt drum siwer ima Diner, wand häsch miesse im Auto bstelle und öi ässo ga en Burger ässo. Mit vollem Mago siwer zrug ze Sanddüne und si der Sunnuunergang ga lüego. Am negschto Morgo siwer üf und äs isch z schönscht Wätter gsi. Drum heiwer Pancakes gmacht, aber währund dum ässo häds afa züe tüe. Drum siwer nahm ässo nu biz ins Bett gläge und hei mit der Mama und dum Norma telefoniert. Nahm Telefo isch z Wätter immer nu schlächt gsi und äs hed nu meh afa rägno. Drum heiwernisch ins Bett verpflanzt und hei Netflix glüegt. Am dri isch z Wätter immer nu himmelärdotrürig gsi. Drum siwer de schnell ga ichöifo und si ga Mexkanisch ässo, willwer in dem Rägo nid hei chene choche😢 Aber äs isch super gsi und mit vollen Mage siwer de ins Bett und hei en ischchalti Nacht verbracht. Da isch nixmeh mit churze Hose und z Fenschter sperrangelwitoffe.Read more

      Im Tularoza Basin in der Nähe von Alamogordo Stadt befindet sich dieser NP.
      Ist das mit 712 km2 grösste aus Gips bestehende Dünenfeld der Welt.
      Wir durchfahren das blendend weisse Sandmeer auf einer 25km langen Panoramastrasse. Sonnenbrille ein Muss!!!
      Notiz am Rande zu Alamogordo: hier im White Sands Missile Range ist die Geburtsstätte des Atomzeitalters: 1945 zündete die US-Militärs (die Stadt lebt heute von der Raketen-und Weltraumindustrie), die erste Atombombe.
