      Cinnamon Lodge & on the road again

      We started our journey from Sa Pa to a place Jeroen holds dear, the Cinnamon Lodge. The weather was perfect, no rain and a nice sun in the beginning. Later it was a bit more cloudy, however that was such a refreshment as the Vietnamese sun can be quite harsh. The journey was smooth overall. On the way we took some pictures, which we will treat you with :)

      The cinnamon lodge and their host gave us a warm welcome (again for Jeroen). We stayed at a recently built lodge up the cinnamon farm, which was incredible. We had dinner with the family, including an infinite amount of rice whine. Next to that we were treated with a light show, as it started pouring down.

      We relaxed a bit, had a great dinner and an amazing sleep.

      Cinnamon Harvest

      Before leaving on Wednesday we had the opportunity to see the cinnamon farm. It has been in their family for 20 years, built up by the father after fleeing north from the War. We also had some cold cinnamon ginger honey tea which was so tasty.
      Many people don’t know that cinnamon is the inside bark from the cinnamon tree. They can harvest them after the trees are 5 years old and are cut until they are 20. When the bark is cut the tree dies and is cut down, so they put the seedlings closer together on a hill and then cut them at different ages to make space. The harvest is done by hand in 45cm long pieces. The bark is then peeled off the tree which we were allowed to try. It smelled heavenly and tasted like fresh cinnamon. It’s harder than it looks. You try to not break any pieces because that gives less money. They get 2USD$ per kg. The bark is then dried for 1 day in the sun and rolls up. To get the brown rolls we are used to they need to do an additional step and shave the bark, which we also tried. So a lot of work goes into it. As you can see we were quite sweaty. Then the shaved bark is left to dry for 3 days and gives a yield of 7USD$ per kg. The stems of leaves are edible too and used to make cinnamon oil.
      We were given a few rolls of cinnamon and honey to make tea on the way.

      Ha Giang Loop

      Nachdem wir uns in Indonesien doch entschieden haben nach Vietnam zu fliegen stand für uns eine Sache fest, wir wollen unbedingt den Loop machen! Und es war die aller beste Entscheidung ever. Mit die besten Tage der gesamten Reise bisher. Die Landschaft ist einfach unfassbar. Alle 200 Meter wieder anders und neu. Besonders der erste Tag. Wir waren eh schon mega hyped, noch bevor wir überhaupt auf den Motorrädern saßen. Als wir dann aus der Stadt raus sind dachten wir uns schon: „omg wow wie schön😍“ aber dass es sich einfach nach jeder Kurve steigert, damit haben wir nicht gerechnet. Durch Täler und Berge führen uns die nächsten Stunden und Tage. Die Sonne wärmt uns sanft von oben. Der Wind streicht die Haut in unseren Gesichtern die nicht vom Helm bedeckt sind. Alle 30 Minuten bleiben wir stehen um die Aussicht genießen zu können und unseren Ärschen eine Pause zu gönnen😂! Die Zeit zum Nachdenken ist unbegrenzt und wirkt unendlich. Unsere wild zusammengestellte Gruppe von überall her wächst über die Zeit durch super Gespräche sehr zusammen. Czytaj więcej

      Barche a spinta!

      Dal ponte immediatamente esterno al paese di Coc Ly percorriamo un sentiero ben poco agevole per raggiungere il Chay River; qui, o meglio qualche centinaio di metri più a valle, essendo il fiume praticamente asciutto nella sua parte alta, ci imbarchiamo.
      Dopo un breve tratto, manco a dirlo, siamo incagliati.. ci tocca scendere a spingere la barca, cosa che capiterà più volte nei primi minuti di navigazione.
      Da lì in poi è uno spettacolo. L’acqua si fa via via più profonda e intono a noi di aprono scenari incredibili, fatti di foreste tropicali, cascate e roccia. Stupendo. Terminata la navigazione siamo tutti concordi, questo fiume è stato il più emozionante tra quelli percorsi in Vietnam.       Czytaj więcej

      Trajet vers Bac Ha

      4 heures d'autoroute jusqu'à Lao Cai (prononcé "baoque aie") pour déjeuner.
      Nous reprenons la route 1h30 jusqu'au village de Bac Ha (prononcé Baka) où nous sommes hébergés par Mme Loan de l'ethnie Tay.

      Très bon accueil ! Après une ballade et ces premiers paysages Vietnamien , nous dînons avec la famille ! Beaucoup d'alcool de riz et de liqueur de prune !
      Comme on ne boit pas seul, j'accompagne avec plaisir !

      Avant la cuite, nous allons nous coucher sous les combles. Il fait froid et 2 couvertures suffisent à peine ! Si seulement le froid était le seul problème !! Un mariage de l'autre côté de la vallée et sa sonorité à fond jusqu'au petit matin, nous a fait profiter de la musique traditionnelle vietnamienne.       Czytaj więcej

      Can Cau Market and Tribal Villages

      I was feeling much better after my herbal bath and slept very well. God knows what was in it but it seemed to work. So we borrowed the bike and went to Can Cau Market, famous for being the largest buffalo market in the area. When we left on the bike Phat looked at us with his huge puppy dog eyes for leaving him. But we hadn't done anything for 3 days so we headed off to the market. Well the ground was absolutely sodden from the rain and the sheer number of buffalo's that had trampled their way through. It was a lovely drive but as always in the mountains the weather is very unpredictable, luckily we were on our way back and were able to take cover in a cafe when the heavens opened. After waiting 45 mins it turned to drizzle and felt it was as good as we would get so we grabbed Phat's treat cake and headed back to the homestay. The afternoon was spent playing games with Phat and then having the honour of visiting various local tribal villages. Will even tried their local tobacco! The weather was stunning and the views were lovely on the bike along the way!

      That evening I cooked Aubergine Saak and Chapattis for the family. It was so much fun both Lan, the mum, and Phat joined in rolling the chapattis and they loved it! It was sooo nice to have home cooked food too! Then the family invited us to go to Bac Ha night market. Wow do they put a show on for tourists! First they have performances of their local dance on stage and then they build a huge fire and everyone dances round holding hands. It was so so so much fun!!       Czytaj więcej

      Bac Ha Market and off we go again!

      The next day we went to the really famous Bac Ha Market which is the largest market bringing together tribes from villages all around wearing their traditional dresses and making the market so colourful! We went with Lan and Phat and it was so interesting! We learnt that a buffalo costs about £1000 and a songbird about £100!

      We then very quickly decided it was definitely time to move on so we booked a super last minute bus to take us to Ha Giang, well two buses.

      The second bus had yet another crazy driver and it was sooo full of furniture and even a car windscreen in a wooden frame. We literally had to climb over it all to get to our seats! It's hilarious when you are on a bus as a tourists being thrown completely out of our seats and barely comfortable when the conductor of the bus stands the whole way barely moving with the manic bus. A girl on the bus described it as "its like the bus off Harry Potter" and honestly I couldn't have summed it up better!! The weather was glorious the whole journey and the views along the way spectacular! On the bus we met Svenja who decided to stay in the same Homestay as us. That evening we decided we would all do the 4 day motorbike loop together.       Czytaj więcej

      Bac Ha

      Kazdou nedeli brzo rano opusti zeny a muzi ze 4 mistnich kmenu sve vesnice v horach a udolich posetych ryzovymi policky, aby na trhu v mestecku Bac Ha prodali, co za uplynuly tyden vyrobili. Kabelky, penezenky, naramky, zalozky do knih, zviratka z tradicnich latek, misky z kokosovych orechu... a taky vodni bycky, slepice, kachny a psiky. Cedule, co tu maji, rika, ze je mistni zvireci trh zapsany do Guinessovy knihy rekordu. Uplne nevim, jaky rekord teda lame, ale bycka bych si koupila ;-).
      Krome veci na prodej se to tu hemzi barevnymi kostymy, babickami, maminkami s detmi, detmi s detmi... a taky zapadnimi turisty, kteri sem jezdi poridit suvenyry a par hezkych snimku.
      Po vydatne pho jsme suvenyry porizovali taky. V tvrde konkurenci prodejechtivych babicek slo smlouvani jako po masle. Az mi to obcas bylo blbe a k dojednane cene jsem prihodila dvacku. Suvenyry mam, rodino, pratele, teste se ;-).       Czytaj więcej

      Bac Ha

      Nous commençons réellement la visite du nord et de jolies montagnes (quand il n'y a pas de brume 😶‍🌫️) par Bac Ha, petite ville de 7 000 habitants. Nous y ferons quelques marches aux alentours.

      Een vlotte terugrit

      Hoe zou dat nou komen?

      Heeft vast niks te maken met het feit dat ik gisteren een paar uur over stapels stenen heb gestuiterd. Het bed van mijn "hotel" (zeven nog verassend netjes afgewerkte kamers onder een afdak) zal ook niet geholpen hebben. In Sa Pa sliepen Karin en ik op een matras dat je lichtjes uitgedrukt "stevig" zou kunnen noemen, maar dit geval lijkt meer op een stuk triplex met een laken erover en kostte waarschijnlijk nog minder. Fantastisch.

      Ik pak snel mijn biezen en stop langs de hoofdweg voor een bánh mì-tosti (niet eerder gezien, wel lekker) en een kijkje op de kaart. Omdat ik al dichterbij Sa Pa ben is er wel tijd voor een omweg door de bergen, dunkt me. Hiervoor moet ik bij Yên Bình afslaan. Op de brommert, half uurtje rijden, tank volgooien, bakkie pleur en de bergweg in. Na 20 meter zie ik echter al een schrikwekkend herkenbaar bord waarop iets wordt uigelegd over wegwerkzaamheden.

      Hmmmmm...

      Als ik de bocht om rij staat één groot modderbad mij op te wachten. Dat gaan we dus mooi niet nog eens doen. Wat eerder terug zijn bij Karin is natuurlijk ook helemaal niet erg, dus: Rechtsomkeert en gas erop.

      Het is rustig nu, omdat de hoofdweg naar Hanoi eerder afboog en dit slechts een verbinding is tussen twee lichtbevolkte provincies. Goede vaart. Ondanks de mist blijft het landschap nog steeds betoveren. Ik besluit deze keer de Rode Rivier te volgen en daar gaat het helemaal lekker, geen vierwieler te zien. Zo kom ik uiteindelijk voor twee uur al in Sa Pa, waar ik Karin weerzie in het vegan restaurant waar ze die ochtend heeft zitten werken. Na de lunch studeer ik wat Japans en werkt Karin verder. Als ik mij uiteindelijk wat begin te vervelen, breng ik de brommer terug naar de verhuur (geen woord over de laag stof en modder waarmee de eerder spik-en-spanne Yamaha bedekt is) en ga ik op Karins aanraden naar de spa voor een full-body massage. Dat is nog eens thuiskomen.

      's Avonds eten we mee met de familie die de homestay runt en ze hebben voortreffelijk gekookt. Vooral de typisch noordelijke gefrituurde loempiaatjes (heel anders dan je in Nederland ziet) zijn niet vanaf te blijven. We worden ook vergezeld door een Koreaans stel van middelbare leeftijd. De man spreekt belabberd Engels, maar laat zich daardoor niet tegenhouden. Erg vermakelijk. We sluiten af met een kopje bloementhee en slapende kittens op ons schoot. Welterusten.
