And were off again
 17 februari 2018, Finland ⋅ ⛅ -18 °C

So today is a pretty crazy day for me as my usual agenda boarding a plane would be jetting off somewhere hot, but today couldn’t be more different, I’m off to Lapland with my Finnish partner in crime Ida.
Even as I’m sat on the plane as we fly to helsinki it still seems a bit surreal. This is one of the first times I’ve flown where I’m not in that holiday mood of giddiness and I don’t know why although not feeling well might have something to do with it. We will fly to Helsinki first before flying out to Oulu which is about an hour away. Our arrival time is 1 in the morning and luckily Ida’s mum is picking us up so at least we won’t have our pants pulled down using an airport taxi. We arrive at Helsinki airport and the slight panic we might miss our connecting flight is calmed when the captain advises us that they have a delay on that flight also. The good news is it means I can have a cigarette in the airport smoking room which I have to say is the cleanest one I’ve ever seen. After a cigarette or two we head for the departure lounge and within no time at all we’re back on the bus to catch our flight to Oulu. Sitting on the plane waiting for take off a large crane like lorry approaches the plane and starts spraying the wing with anti free, this is to prevent anything from freezing up, well it is minus 16 outside. We arrive in Oulu without any freezing issues and I head through customs to have a cigarette while Ida waits for our case. Ida’s mums meeting us at the airport and as I go through there’s a lady that looks just like Ida and I say hello but it isn’t Ida’s my so rather than make a show of myself again I go and have my cigarette. Oh my gosh I wasn’t expecting how cold it was but the snow sparkles like diamonds even as it’s falling from the sky it’s so pretty. Back in the arrivals lounge it’s not long before Ida comes through with the case and is greeted by a lady that looks nothing like her and a lot younger than I was expecting. She drives us the 20 km back to the apartment and after a quick chat heads off and we get straight to bed as it’s 2amLäs mer

Out at Sea
 9 november 2017, Saint Lucia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C
So I wake this morning and the view as I step onto the balcony never ceases to amaze me. I feel so much better and shower and dress before heading down with Judy to have my morning brew with the office staff. We head out on the bus at 10 to catch the boat from the harbour and sit up front while Captain Kurt drives us to pigeon island. On route my hat blows off and although we turn around to find it we can’t see it anywhere. I have another one at the house so I tell him to carry on. We arrive at the island and take a small trek up to the fort at the top. You can see for miles and even Martanique in the distance. We walk back down and after a quick swim it’s time for lunch. The picnic supplied is sublime and after a good munch I’m back in the sea for a refreshing dip before our tour of the rest of the island. Were shown the houses of all the celebs before anchoring off to do some snorkelling . We head for home It’s been an amazing boat trip and just when I think that I couldn’t smile anymore we are surrounded by pods of dolphins 🐬 the babies frolicking in the sea jumping and diving they swim around the boat curving the bow as we dangle our legs over the side as they play beneath us. There are multiple pods and two different species with the youngsters being the most playful. The boat brings us back into harbour and we disembark back to the hotel. While Judy heads back to the office im left in charge of ordering drinks so 2 James Bond martini 🍸 it is. They are like rocket fuel then Judy orders a bottle of prosecco. Phil and Lorna join us for the sunset and we head back to the ridge. We have dinner and as I go outside the stars are amazing shortly after there is a power cut. With no light pollution whatsoever Judy and I cuddle up in fluffy blankets and fall asleep under the stars what a perfect end to a perfect day with a perfect friend.Läs mer

My routine is waking at around 6am daily but I love the fact of getting up and just sitting having a couple of cups of tea with the most heavenly view. Each time I come out of the front door I just gasp with the sheer beauty of it but as I come out today The Piton is gone. It’s pouring and the rain causes a mist which totally shrouds the beautiful peak. The plan for today is the sulphur springs and mud bath so after finishing my brew with judy at the office I head down. It’s still quite early so I get my own personal guide who explains how the whole of SOUFRIERE is a volcano crater and that it means sulphur in French. There’s a strong smell of rotten eggs as I watch the sulphur pools bubbling away and then it’s time for the mud bath. Firstly I get in the hot water spring pool which opens up the pores then I cake myself in mud. You allow it to dry before rinsing of in the pool again. It’s supposed to make you so rejuvenated that it will make you look ten years younger. I plan to stay in here for a few hours with that promise but after 20 mins hoards of people arrive that have just docked on a cruise liner so I get out and make way for the tourists. As I walk back up the hill to the ridge I slide on the road and end up arse over tit hitting the ground with a bump. I recover myself and although I’m bruised and dirty finally make my way back to the house. After a quick shower I’m ready to go again and walk nick to the hotel to be picked up by the bus. This afternoon is a day on the beach and as we drive to the town Captain 👩✈️ Kirk is waiting on the boat to take us to sugar beach. We set of and the boat goes so fast I feel like my backside is still on the jetty.
Arriving at the beach it’s rammed but pretty soon a large boat arrives and evacuates it. So armed with my towel I claim my sunbed and settle myself down for the afternoon. The sun beds along the beach are 90 dollars so I’m glad I blagged a cheap seat. After a couple of hours enjoying the view and sipping on coco water the boat is back to pick us up. I treat the crew to a drink and the captain invites me to the driving seat. We are soon back on dry land and heading back to the hotel a quick drink in the bar and we have to go and get ready as tonight we are doing the bbq. It’s nice to get dressed up and although the makeup runs off you I go the whole hog. The food is amazing starting with gazpacho and bloody Mary’s followed by chicken ribs and multiple salads. We enjoy a couple of cocktails after the obligatory sambucas at home and then Judy orders prosecco I am certainly loosened up ready for the limbo dancing 💃 later. Pudding is to die for and although there’s little room left I indulge. The show starts with acrobats and fire 🔥 eating and the it’s time for shaking my thing. I thoroughly enjoy having a good dance and although I’m not flexible like I used to be I have a good go. After the evenings finished we make our way back to the house where I’m in the land of nod within minutes.Läs mer

Tommy the Tarantula
 6 november 2017, Saint Lucia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C
I wake at 5 as my body is still on English time and make my way to the kitchen to put the kettle on. I pick up the kettle and as I turn to fill it up from the water filter there’s a bloody big Tarantula giving me the eye 😱 with kettle still in hand I run out the back door back in the front of the house and shut the kitchen door. For the time being Tommy the tarantula is contained. I watch him through the Louvre doors as he breakdances around the kitchen floor. I take myself back to my 4 poster bed and hide beneath the mosquito net until I hear Judy up and about. Her first question is why is the kettle in the middle of the lounge I explain and she opens the kitchen door but Tommy has gone. We have our cup of tea and then walk the dogs in our pyjamas before coming back to find Tommy has returned. She wastes no time and chases him out with a broom. We have another brew and the most beautiful rainbow 🌈 appears over the Piton mother nature is such an amazing thing. The plan today is to have a walk into town so after a quick cuppa in the office with Judy and the team I head off with shopping list in hand ad tonight I’m cooking dinner. Town is a mixture of shops and banks so I ask where i can get a local breakfast and I’m directed to a little restaurant called petit Piton. They obviously misunderstood what I wanted as it was local English breakfast. I opted for an egg sandwich and a coke and as I’m eating away I hear a guy below the window. We get chatting and he offers to be my guide although I advise him that I won’t be giving him money but will buy him a pair of flip flops as he has nothing on his feet. He escorts me round town which is great as I don’t get mithered by anyone else. Shopping list purchased and Judy comes and picks me up and drops me at home. I spend the afternoon with Shirley the house keeper and she cleans while I cook. After dinners prepared I head down to the bar and meet Phil and Judy and we enjoy a few cocktails before heading back to the house for dinner. We sit on the balcony watching the sunset over the Piton before retiring to bed early.Läs mer

Just Landed
 5 november 2017, Saint Lucia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C
I touch down after a gruelling flight and realise I will be administering a nicotine patch for the journey home. I collect my bags from the only carousel in the airport and make the vey short walk to customs. I get pulled over and lie through my teeth to the oficer telling him I only have clothes and make up in my bags. Throwing him off the scent by opening my bag and showing off my newly purchased underwear. If he’d asked me to open my bag I would have been up shit street without a paddle. Waiting in arrivals is my good friend Judy who hastily scoops me up and directs me to her jeep. She is such a good friend as on the back of the seat is a cool box with chilled bottles of Piton beer in it. We crack open a beer and drive away from the airport pulling over shortly afterward so I can get into my shorts and have a paddle. 40 minutes later we arrive at Hotel Boucan where we order a Gin and tonic and sit down by the pool. It starts to rain quite heavily so drinks in hand we head back to the house. A couple more gins and I’m well on my way having started with eggs benedict and champagne for breakfast followed by numerous bloody Mary’s on the flight. Judy’s cooked up a curry but when I get to my room I’m blown away and there on the side is a gift bag. Upon opening it I find a bottle of sambuca and a bottle of grey goose the girl knows me so well. Phil debriefs on the dangerous things on the island including tarantulas but I take it all in my stride and turn in for an early night as I’m beat .Läs mer

Day From Hell
 22 juli 2016, Kina ⋅ 🌙 29 °C
The plan today is to go to The Window of The World so we set the alarm go 8 o'clock and by 9 we're on our way. We arrive after an hour on the tube and as they don't accept cards I have to go to the cashpoint. I enter my pin a couple of times and just think that I have misread the instructions but on my 3rd attempt it blocks my card. When I look closer I realise that the digits on the keypad are not in the same sequence as I'm used to and have been inputting the wrong pin without realising. This is a big problem as its the only card we have out with us so the only thing we get to see is the replica of the Eiffel Tower from the gates before having to make our way bback to the hostel. This is another one hour journey and when we get back I have the costly pleasure of speaking to an agent In India to unblock it. As I'm reaching the end of the call my credit runs out and I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I suggest we go and try the card and we make the 10 min walk to the cashpoint near the park, only to get there and realise I've left the card on the bed. This day is going just great. Mark volunteers to go back as the toilet is calling and returns 20 minutes later with the card. I input it with trepidation and for the first time today something has gone right. It works. We extract some money and walk the short distance to the bus station to purchase our tickets for tomorrow to Yang Shuo. When I check the tickets they have today's date on and I try to explain I want them for tomorrow but even after writing the date down she doesn't understand and the lady next to her helps us and eventually she reprints them with tomorrow's date. The tickets cost £20 each but we will save on a hostel so it's not too bad. We go back to the hostel and have a breather for half an hour, and I suggest we should go and see the sunset seeing as today has been such a let down. The problem here is there are lots of high rise buildings so we have to catch a tube. When we get off we are right in the middle of a building site and trying to find our way out proves a little difficult, we see a path and venture down it to find ourselves smack bang in the centre of a building being built with metal girders and concrete mixers galore and the foreman shouting us to get off. We retrace our steps and follow the road around but the only traffic passing us is construction lorries. We eventually reach a security hut and with a little help from google translate we are told to carry on. Out of the corner of my eye I see a huge rat and as I jump in shock land on a huge concrete puddle which splashes all the way to my arse. Grrrrrrrr. After a further hour of walking we reach the waterfront and I have to say i need to stop chasing sunsets. After the sun disappears we decide to take a different route back in fear of being run over and what a bad descision that was. We are walking around a building site where each road leads to a dead end. After 3 hours of walking we reach life and after getting a taxi to the nearest subway station we are sadly disappointed to find it's a train station and we need to get another taxi which are nowhere to be found. A mototaxi(bike) pulls around the corner and Mark and I both jump on the back. Considering the day we've had this is probably not a good idea as we cross busy roads and mount pavements narrowly missing pedestrians in our way before thankfully arriving at the tube. I sit for a moment to compose myself and a bloody huge cockroach lands on me.We board the tube and once safely back get into bed before anything else can happenLäs mer

After the best nights sleep in over a week I feel like a new woman, and am ready to start a new day. The plan today is to buy a lonely planet guide book as you are not allowed to bring any books into China we didn't want to start off on the wrong foot so we adhered to the rules. The guy on reception has given us directions to the biggest book shop in the world and is pretty sure we will get it there. It's quite a long way from here but the tubes are pretty easy to follow so we set off on our quest. This place is crazy, they have motorised bicycles as well as mopeds that are all allowed to drive on the pavement and at times I think I'd be safer walking in the road. We disembark at children's palace and as soon as we get off we are instantly at the bookstore. It is huge, and I wonder how we are going to find anything in here even if we were Chinese. We have a few attempts at asking a couple of the staff if they speak English but no one here does. I try and use my initiative and ask someone in the English book section if they can help and we show him a copy of the lonely planet in Chinese and explain exactly what we want, but after he's spoken to a couple of people they tell us they don't have the book or anything similar in English and they only have the likes of Jane Austin. After nearly 2 hours we admit defeat and after a bite to eat we head home.
When I explain to the guy in reception he says he can order it on line and it will arrive tomorrow so we go with that and place the order. It's really strange how they're so advanced with so many things and yet are so restricted at the same time. Tonight the television reception is down and since being here the Internet has been rubbishy, or so I think. When I mention it in reception he tells me they have no Facebook or google here and if I'm using this as my search engine I need to change it to Yahoo.
We head out and buy a few bits at the supermarket and tonight cook a bit of dinner before grabbing an early nightLäs mer

We wake really late this morning, well in fact it's actually closer to afternoon. We grab a shower and head out to catch the tube. We will go to The Peak today which is the highest point in Hong Kong. The queue today is a lot shorter than it was at the weekend but the Hong Kong/ Chinese people really do struggle with the standing in a line mind you saying that so did the French people in the queue it's so bad because there are old people and children in the queue that are getting pushed about so people can get the front seats. Two funny things then happen, the tram drives past the people at the front of the queue and when they eventually get on and sit down more people get on after them and although they don't have a seat they get the perfect view at the front, I do love a bit of Karma.
As we travel to the top of the peak, the huge skyscrapers that rule the city all look like the leaning tower of Pisa as the angle of the tram causes an optical illusion, and the view is made so much more impressive due to the amount and
height of the buildings. We reach the top and
once again delivered into a shopping mall. We wind our way out of here and make our way to the information kiosk inside an old tram. The lady in here is really helpful and advises us of a walk we can take around a small part of the island. She tells us that it will take about an hour so armed with our water we head off, I'm more than glad to leave the crowds behind and head for the tranquility of a country walk. The walk takes us along Lugard road one of the oldest roads on the island, it's beautiful, lined with trees and vegetation as well as spectacular views of Hong Kong Island. As we continue round the path there is a big billboard with a notice of petition about one of the houses here. The house is a listed building but the owner wants to knock it down and build two villas twice its size. Obviously the locals are complaining, but the holding company is owned by an ex government official so I think I can guess who's going to win.
The walk actually takes us 2 hours and when we arrive back we grab a coffee at Starbucks before specking our spot on the viewing tower to wait for the light show. The city is already lit up and the view from here is beautiful they do love a bit of bling here. We position our camera on time lapse but after 10 minutes I'm that cheesed off with being pushed and shoved we decide to leave and catch the tram, thinking we'll miss the rush , but we are wrong, the queue is massive but they have all barriers here so everyone has to stay in line. After an hour wait we're on our way down and even though we planned to hit temple market again tonight we are going to give it a miss and head straight for the hostel to lay our heads down.Läs mer

The plan for today is to go and see the big Buddha, but my first stop is to try and get the our room changed. I go down to the 3rd floor and bang on the door, but after 10 mins there is still no answer so I guess she isn't in. We can't wait in for her all day so we make our way to the tube and after a couple of changes were on the line to Tung Chung. There are loads of people on here but I'm hoping most of them will get off at Disneyland, however I'm sadly mistaken. We join the queue for the cable car, but after hardly moving for half an hour I suggest to Mark it might be worth doing this on Monday when there are less people. He agrees but making our way to leave the queue is a task in itself. Eventually we are back on the tube and after a little look at the map we've decided to go to llama island.
I have to say the tube system here is brilliant and within a short time we arrive at the pier. The boat over is just £1.40 and takes about 30 minutes and we arrive to the island. We disembark the boat and follow the single path in front of us which leads through the first small village with restaurants and shops scattered either side. A little further along is an English pub that sells pickled eggs so i indulge in a pack of ready salted and an egg while Mark indulges in a pint. We just have the one and mine was a coke but the bill is a tenner so that's our lunch budget out the window. Our first stop is the temple by which I am a little underwhelmed as I expected it to be really impressive but to be honest I nearly walked past it. We do a you turn and head up the hill and walk for half an hour till we reach the beach. Mark takes a dip to cool down but I choose not to as the water is a mass of plastic bags and rubbishy and to the right is a huge power station, although these things don't stop most people going in. The water is really warm and after a quick refresh we continue our journey around the island. On the other side we start on an incline up the hill and to the right is a bbq area where they have pits that you can use to cook lunch. We chat to a lady called Claire who is from Australia but working over here for 6 weeks and make our way to the viewing point at the top. There is just the one path that takes us around the Island and as we go down I spot a huge spider. When I look closer there are lots of them but its the biggest spider I've seen in the wild, so after a quick photo we continued along the trail accompanied by our new found friend. Along the path there are square doggie poo places which is a great idea, and further along we reach Kamikaze Cave where Japanese soldiers dug out the caves and placed torpedo boats in them to bomb the allied forces as they entered the harbour . The path leads around the harbour and towards the next temple before bringing us to the Fisherfolk Village. As we walk through there are hundreds of tanks filled with everything from Crabs to Prawns and a Clam that looks more than a little suggestive, but we give this a miss and opt for a beer. On The journey back we opt to sit inside as the heat is unbelievable and even the sea breeze is warm. Bidding good night to Claire we exchange email addresses and arrange to meet for dinner in a couple of nights.Läs mer

Today we will change hostels so after packing and checking out we take the tube to our new destination in Kowloon. We have to wait till 2 to check in so after leaving our bags in reception we leave the hostel and head out into the bustling street below and too a little cafe in fbkmuthe street. It's comical because the menu is all in Chinese and the only form of cutlery is chopsticks. After a lot of pointing we order and end up with noodles and dim sum and try our best with the given eating implements. After spending a good hour eating our dinner we mosey back to the hostel to check in. Mark heads up to the room first and when he comes back down all he keeps saying is "your not going to be happy"When I get to the room it has to be the smallest squat I've ever stayed in Mark and I can't even stand up at the same time. The room we were in before was small but this is taking it to a new level. When I look at the bathroom there is literally a shower head over the toilet, an we have a problem as Mark has already paid for 5 nights. We grin and bear it and head out to the local "ladies market" a market full of all sorts from knock off handbags to cuddly toys. Only 5 minutes in and we were hit on by a woman working for the local massage parlour and Mark enquirer about getting his feet done. The woman escorted him away and left me to do some shopping. We met an hour later and had a wander around the technology centre which absolutely blew us away. The technology here is light years ahead of home and half the price, but we just window shopped and decided to wait until we get further in. The shopping had made us hungry so on route back to the hostel we opted for a restaurant just opposite which was popular with the locals. Once again using our chopstick skills we polished off dinner and headed home for bed. When I laid down on the mattress it was like sleeping on a floor so as its so late now we will be heading down in the morning to ask for a change of room.Läs mer

Mark and I don't wake till midday and he is pretty ill, absolutely full of cold. I go down to reception and reserve for another night and have a chat with a couple of people in there. After a short chat I am now aware we need a visa for China. This is not good news as we hadn't planned on staying in Hong Kong too long. I take the short walk round the corner to Starbucks and treat us to an egg and bacon croissant and a coffee before breaking the bad news. When I get back Mark is sat up in bed and his eyes light up when he sees I have food. I tell him about the Visas and after a short discussion we decide to make our way to the immigration office on the other end of town. Well actually it's on another island but still classed as Hong Kong. After a few queries we are in the immigration office to find that tourists have to go to the building next door. One thing that is immediately apparent here is they are not friendly and when asking for help they are quite rude. We enter the building and are greeted straightaway with security before making our way to the third floor. The guy here gives us a form to fill out and there is a place to get our passports copied and photos taken all at an expensive price. All info gathered and it's back to the guy who issues us with a number to join the huge queue. An hour later we are called to the counter where the lady asks if we have our flights booked when I tell her we will be travelling by boat she says we still need proof and when I ask how will I know we will get the visas in time she tells me in a stern voice that we will have to go to the agency upstairs.
What a surprise the price is an additional 30 pound each(more than the actual visa itself) but at this point we have no choice, and I reluctantly hand over my passport and told to return in a week. With this crossed off our list we have decided to go and see the light show over this side of the water. We arrive to the waterfront at just before 7 and I'm pleased to get a seat right on the front but within ten minutes people just literally stand in front of us so as the motto goes, if you can't beat them join them.
Slowly the night draws in and the buildings start to illuminate until finally it's time for the show. Junks float on the water as the buildings light up in time to the music. The show finishes 20 minutes later and along with 100s of other people make our way back to the tube to head back over to the other side of the water.
A couple of things we've noticed is that Hong Kong is a maze of Malls, but that the city also seems bigger underground than on top. The metros are pretty easy to use and very cheap especially with an octopus card.
Back on Hong Kong island we look for somewhere to eat. Inside a shopping mall close to the hostel we sit down and after being brought tea no one comes near for over 15 mins so I tell Mark we are leaving. In another mall we make our way to a Thai restaurant and after eating a delicious dinner it's back to the hostel.Läs mer

So after spending the past week at home we are making our way on the next part of our journey. This trip home has been extremely poignant and reassured me that what we are doing is definitely the right thing. It's been really hard to say goodbye a second time but was so nice to see the family and friends that I did.
The first few days were spent in Liverpool enjoying time with Amber and my mum as well as the other few members of the family and the 2 Lindas who never fail to put a smile on my face and have hearts as big as a whale. From there I travelled down to my second home in Portsmouth spending time with Bex and Lily who even in such sad times managed to create a few extra memories although it was without my friend Darren.
My return back made me realise a lot of things and for a change I slowed down and looked around me appreciating what a beautiful country we have noticing the butterflies and summer flowers and strawberry picking for the first time in years.
Thank you everyone for making it so special I will miss you more than you'll ever know, but there is still world to explore and somebody has got to do it unless you can think of someone else more suitable ????? Thought not so will keep you updated dailyish xxxxLäs mer

Flying to Hong Kong

Well it wouldn't be me if there wasn't drama. I manage to lose Mark at Amsterdam airport. There is the slight problem that I have both the passports and I've arranged to meet Mark at a totally different place. I eventually have to put a tannoy out for him , and he shows up just in the nick of time. We are ushered through passport control literally grab our bags and queue jump the long line of passengers waiting to check in luggage. The lady advises we are possibly too late and that our flight is already boarding I beg her with tears eyes saying today is Marks 50th birthday and this is a special surprise. Thankfully she loads our bags onto the baggage rack and we literally run to our gate and get there just as its closing. That is the closest I've got to missing a flight without actually missing it. On board I tune into some movies but a couple of hours in feel really sick. I put it down to the stress but feel rough for the whole flight. We touch down in bejing airport 8 hours later but the time difference is 7 hours in front, my poor body is still catching up from Brazil and the jet lag has more than kicked in its kicked ass. Mark and I have a ruck before were even off the plane so I spend the time in the airport crying in a hidden corner thinking about catching the next flight home. I grab a Starbucks and suddenly everything seems ok again and we board the flight for the 3 hours to Hong Kong with me wearing sunglasses to hide my red eyes.
At Hong Kong I'm thankful to see our luggage as I always worry when I have a connecting flight that I haven't put it on there myself but it's arrived safe and sound and we make our way to the metro. We have booked a hostel whilst at the airport right near Times Square and when we get off the humidity hits me in the face like a wet flannel. This place is a crazy shopping haven with bustling streets and so many shops but I have enough baggage on my back so we walk to the hostel and check in. Our room is barely big enough to swing a cat in but still feeling rough we get straight into bed and wake at 9pm. We pop out and grab a bite to eat at a street seller before returning to the hostel and falling straight back into bed.Läs mer

Last Bus Trip In Brazil
 1 juli 2016, Brasilien ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C
We wake this morning and my heart is heavy at leaving this beautiful place. At breakfast we speak with 2 ladies who we met at punta de monta the other day. She explains that she and her wife have just bought a plot of land here and plan to build a house. She must see my colour change from brown to green, im so envious. We finish breakfast and exchange facebook accounts with her inviting us to stay should we visit the island again. Like ive said before im not a great lover of revisiting places but this place is still so untouched maybe its a possibility. We bid our farewells, and head to the room to pack before making our short walk to board the boat back to Camamu. With a tear in my eye we leave the island and arrive in Camamu just 30 minutes later. The reality of being half way through our adventure is dawning with a harsh reality today, and as much as i love and miss my family and friends i know i cant return to life the way it was. We arrive in Camamu and there is a bus here, but it is full so we wait an hour for the next one. This place is a little market town and the traffic moving through the small area is constant. Our bus arrives and no sooner have we boarded the bus we pull up around the corner and the driver has a 30 minute break. We reach Bon Despacho and from here have to get a ferry its very similar to the isle of wight ferry and takes about an hour. By the time we arrive in Salvador its dark and we get of the boat to the worst downpour yet. Maybe this is preparing us for England. Theres no other option but to get a taxi and we bundle ourselves in soaked to the skin. The traffic is bedlem and nearly an hour later we arrive at our hostel. Its literally a case of ordering pizza and getting into bed. The journey home has begun xLäs mer

Staying local
 30 juni 2016, Brasilien ⋅ 🌧 18 °C
Weve dehired the quad cos i want to explore the local area a bit more. We have breakfast and decide to walk down to the beach and in the opposite direction to where weve been the past few days. We get onto the beach and sit on our own little piece until the tide comes so high we nearly get washed away rucksack and all. We make our way over to the next beach scrambling over the sea defence of rocks that have been placed on the shoreline and it once again brings me back to how global warming has effected even places like here. We relax on the beach for a couple of hours me just soaking up a little sunshine while Mark goes rock pool fishing. We walk back along the beach and stop in a little bar where we get chatting to two lovely ladies who dont speak any English, but with the help of my little pocket dictionary we hold a conversation for a good few hours. Back to the room between the itermittent showers we take a shower and at ten past 4 i say to Mark we need to head along the beach to watch sunset but 10 minutes later hes still got his head stuck in candy crush and i head off on my own. Rather than walk along the beach i make my way down the street that runs parrallel and im shocked at how many top end luxury complexes stand empty. I suppose they make enough money in peak that they can justify closing down in the winter. As i make my way down to the beach i marvel at the way the upturned coco trees have been carved into faces using the roots as hair. The indian fishing nets crowd the water here and the sun is nowhere to be seen , bit im enjoying the walk so carry on. I reach the beach front bar and order a coke knowing that there will be no marvellous sunset tonight and along the beach i see a familiar figure its Mark and im even happier to see him because ive forgotten my cigarettes. We share a drink as the sky turns black and once again the heavens open but as quickly as it starts it stops. By the time weve walked back its dark and we grab a shower before making our way to a different place to eat tonight. I place our order and then a different guy comes to our table And says the owner hasnt understood us ??? maybe my portuguese isnt that good after all😳 The guy speaks fluent english and tells us he lived in the States for two years, is from Curitiba but came here to surf 10 years ago and never left. When i ask about the reef he explains the tide is controlled by the moon and its only possible to dive here when there is a full moon, which wont be for a few days. We eat dinner and for thr last time head back to our little room in paradise 🏝Läs mer

Shower Dodging
 29 juni 2016, Brasilien ⋅ 🌧 18 °C
We have hired the quad for one more day and have decided to head out to Saquira to watch the sunset, firstly though we explore some of the local beaches including bombara and punta de monta. I have said that i think the sun sets on this side of the island but Mark is adamant that the picture hes seen on the map has a sunset on it so off we head. Marks sense of direction is not great but sometimes its easier just to go with it than to have the argument that i dont believe in him.. We head off down the muddy track which is now even muddier as it rained all night again. We reach a dead end in the road and when i ask a guy if he knows the way he says its back the way we came and the way i said to go . On route we stop at Tapau again, because there is a reef you can swim to here at low tide but when we arrive its not possible. We have a drink at a bar on the beach and i ask the guy about Saquira and he tells us this is where we can watch sunrise. Lol im not gonna say i told you so!!!!! Back on the quad we make our way back to punta de monta where we arrive just after 4 and the view is spectacular. We enjoy a drink mine being non alcoholic because im pregnant .., only joking im still not feeling 100% and ad we sit here a group of Americans come down on the beach. They are a family and the son is getting married here on Saturday at 4pm. Im so glad tonight is such a perfect sunset as she must be so happy at the beautiful setting she has for her special day. We all share a drink as the sunsets and wish them well for the weekend. A quick shower and out for a bite to eat but im feeling really sick so we finish up and go back to the room. The room is spinning but i lay down and eventually drift off.Läs mer

Big Rain
 28 juni 2016, Brasilien ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

We wake and take breakfast and i enquire in reception about a quad. We got a price in town yesterday but here is cheaper, so he calls the company and a young girl comes out and gives me instructions for riding the quad. Mark is not in the bestt of moods after the football yesterday and as we make our way to fill up with gasoline hes shouting at me for my driving .... go slower go faster watch that bump... The more he nags the more i aim for the pot holes. Filled up with gas we set off, but they have had so much rain here its difficult to avoid the puddles and half way through the journey Mark demands i stop and that hes walking back. We have a heart to heart on the side of the road with people stopping to ask if weve run out of petrol. We make our peace and Mark gets back on (im sure hes just sulking because he cant drive)
Just 5 mins into the journey and it starts to rain, not just little rain but tropical rain. We try parking underneath a tree to take some shelter but we are both soaked so we push on until we reach Taipu De Fora. We arrive here soaked to the skin and park up the quad and make a run for the nearest shelter which surprise surprise is a bar. We order a beer as the barman just laughs at us. We really are a sight. Just the one beer here as its well expensive and within 20 mins the sun is back out. We walk along this idyllic beach and its hard to believe that this is the last week of 6 months away. As we walk along the beach we spot a fish struggling on the beach so he trys to pick it up to put it back in the water but just cant get hold of it a guy walks along and we get chatting to a Canadian who has lived here for over 30 years who picks the fish up and tosses it into the sea. We chat with the Canadian for 20 minutes or so before recommending a place for us to eat just 100 yards up the road, he walks along with us and although the place looks like is closed he shouts the woman who runs down and throws the doors open. Mark orders the octupus which looks delicious but im unable to eat, my stomach is all over the place. Dinner eaten and we sit patiently waiting for the rain to die down just as we think its stopped it hammers down again so we take the resolve to just grin and bear it. We jump on the quad and make the long journey(well 30 minutes but it seems longer ) back to base. I drop everything so i can get in the shower first, im covered in mud where the quad has splashed through the puddles, or should i say lakes? Washed we sit out on the front laying in my hammock just chilling for a few hours before heading for something to eat. Because its low season there is very little open , but we find a nice little place and order. I can literally only eat half of mine, so Mark finishes mine off and he takes the other half of his pizza back for supper. Im glad just to get into my bed and fall straight asleep.Läs mer

Back on The Bus
 27 juni 2016, Brasilien ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C
I wake again at just after 530 as i am desperate to watch a sunrise, but yet again the rain is in and the only thing i can see is grey clouds, however i could easily get used to waking up to this view every morning. We grab a quick breakfast as the taxi will be here in a few minutes. We arrive at the bus station and board the bus for the short journey to Camamu. As soon as we step of the bus there are lots of people trying to sell us the boat crossing and as im saying no Mark has agreed with a guy who now has hold of our rucksacks marching us across the road and then wants paying for carrying our bags 50 ft . When i ask Mark what hes said he has no idea and the woman has to go through it all again with me. The boat leaves in 40 minutes so we have a quick ciggie and wait to board the bus. The town here looks really pretty but once again is going through a lot of building work ready fot the many tourists that will flow through here in the next few years. We board the boat and its like a speed boat we are flying but the rain is pouring in and as everyone is closing there windows we come to an abrupt stop. The captain ( the best looking captain ive ever seen and youngest) climbs on the roof gives something a bang and climbs back in the boat and were off again. We arrive on Barra Grande 40 minutes later but its still pouring. We sit in the little shelter waiting for the rain to break a little before we set off to find the hostel. We have to stop half way there to take shelter but the rain doesnt last long and as we round the corner our hostel is right in front of us, we stay here for a little while until the rain passes and then head out for a little while, Mark is a little wound up over the football but i decide to take some time out before he comes to find me as noone here speaks English so im the only one who can find us a bar to watch the game. I ask a guy at a restaurant in centro and he walks us round to the bar. The owners name is Bahia and he supports Bahia football team, serving us with a shot of his home made cachasa. Its literally a little shack on the street. We watch the game here on a telly i used to have 20 odd years ago. The locals become a little disturbed when Mark starts shouting obsceneties at the telly they ask him questions in Portuguese and he keeps nodding and saying Si hes probably right as the only thing they can be saying is how badly were playing. We finish watching the game and head back to the room with every intention of going out for something to eat, but i lye on the bed and wake up at 5 this morning.Läs mer

Lazy Day
 26 juni 2016, Brasilien ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We will have a lazy day today because sometimes you just have to appreciate whats on your doorstep. Mark has already hit the surf and i just lie back in the hammock and take it all in. The sound of the waves literally crashing on the beach casting my eyes out to check Mark hasnt been washed up on the rocks either side of the beach🏄 I spend some time writing my blog and make a few phone calls home.
The sea is really choppy but when Mark gets out i head right in. Its amazing and each wave brings me right to the beach and with the undercurrent being so strong I keep ending up on the beach like a drowwned whale. About midday we both take a shower and Mark takes the board back. Weve opted on not going far today so we take lunch at the bar next door. The problem here is the insects, no sooner have you poured a drink they are doing a backstroke in it so ive come to the conclusion that the dont poo when they land and therefore its ok to just scoop them out with your finger. We spend an hour in the afternoon just packing the majority of stuff as we are out of here in the morning and on our last part of the first part of our journey. The lady who runs the hostel has got a 15 day old baby and it takes me back 20 years i can remember it like yesterday. I sit with her and her mum chatting about how this would be my dream and they explain that initially there are lots of hurdles to get over before you start but it is definitely worth it , although she looks tired im sure this is more to do with the baby. We spend the rest of the day lounging around and at teatime Mark heads to the shop to buy a few bits. The evening is spent in pretty much the same way, and i get into bed tired from doing nothingLäs mer

I wake at 4 am today to try and catch a sunrise and as i sit on the porch at 430 i see a headtorch standing right by our gate. Its pitch black and i have a horrible feeling sombodies watching me . Mark is only a few feet away so i dont panic but within minutes it becomes obvious its the crew setting up for filming. I position myself where im not blinded by the lights of stardom and set up the camera on time lapse. Im amazed by how much i like this new gadget on my ipod. At 530 the sky starts to change from black to orange but i cant see any full sunrise so i take myself back to bed at 545. I get up for breakfast and im telling them about the film crew when one of the girls Luana tells me sunrise is at 6, absolutely gutted but theres always tommorow. We have extended our stay and our plans have also changed after speaking with them as Morro De Sau Paulo is going to be pakcked with it being festival. Mark attempts again to do some laundry but the woman is still not there so i do it all by hand while Mark erects a washing line. The weather has changed quite dramatically and the film crew on the beach are packing up. I ask if they would be finished for the day and the giy says give it an hour. Half an hour later im in the water and its great. The cloidy skies are starting to clear and the sun is trying its best. Mark and i head down the beach and just enjoying the fact of being so close to the sea. There is definitely a storm brewing and you can feel the wind of change so we grab a quick shower and wait for it to begin . Ive had a nightmare all the blogs ive written for the past few days have gone. I saved them on my ipod and the app crashed so all my drafts were wiped. So much for technology. At least writing in a book i dont have predictive text and a missing p on my keyboard. I have finally caught up by getting up at sunset and re writing. At 7pm the electricity starts to fail and by 730 we are using candlelight we sit in the darkness and Mark has the idea of swinging me in the hammock, the next thing im on the floor with my whole body bouncing of the concrete. We carry on watching the storm wondering wether to venture out for something to eat. We sit and sit and then decide to go. Armed with our head torches we make the 20 minute walk to town and with the street(i use that term loosely) lights out we see the fireflys. I first saw these in Petropolis and it makes me realise how short time is as that waa mearly 6 months ago. A lot has happened in 6 months but im really excited for the next 6. We eat delicioid pasta filled with sundried beef and pumpkin before returning to the hostel to baton down the hatches xxLäs mer
