    Drive to Golden Bay

    Started the day with scrambled eggs with left over potatoes and vegetables all fried up in the pan. We checked out off the barn around 10am. We enjoyed our stay here in the Abel Tasman.

    First we drove to Split Apple Rock, an unusual rock formation that looks like an apple that has neatly been sliced in half. We walked down a track through native trees to get down to the beach. The water was so clear and the sand very golden. We came across a small cave where I took the first picture from. The split apple rock is made of granite and is estimated to be 120 million years old. You can see the split of the rock in the second picture.

    After this we drove on. We stopped at a Lookout point called Hawkes Lookout. We could see some snow capped mountains. You could see Riwaka Valley and out to Motueka and the coast.

    We drove down lots of windy roads. I was starting to feel a little car sick, but the views were breathtaking along the way. We came across another Lookout called Harwood in Upper Takaka overlooking the mountains.

    Next we checked in to the hostel Barefoot backpackers in Takaka, in Golden Bay. We made some sandwiches and then headed out to Waikoropupa Springs walk. We walked through native trees and across bridges over rivers to get to the springs. The walk was beautiful. When we got there I couldn't believe how clear the water was. I read afterwards that Te Waikoropupƫ Springs are the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand, the largest cold water springs in the Southern Hemisphere and contain some of the clearest water ever measured.

    We then went to Labrynth rocks which is a natural formation of ancient rocks. We walked through a maze like pathway between the rocks and native trees. We got a bit lost a few times coming across dead ends. The path was truly a labyrinth with paths winding through the rocks. There were many side paths that we all couldn't resist exploring. We made it out in the end. Kyra took a video for her vlog which will be funny to watch. There were little toys scattered everywhere a good idea for little children.

    In the evening we went out for a meal at root bar. I had a large beef burger and chips and a cider. It was a delicious meal.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Rawhiti cave, Wainui falls & Wharariki

    We started the day early with a hike up to Rawhiti cave. We hiked through lush ferns and walked across dry creek valley. After, the track was very steep and rugged as it zig-zagged up the hill. It was a bit slippery going up. After a tough climb we could see the cave entrance come in to view. It was spectacular. Definitely worth the climb. We walked down some wooden steps to a viewing deck inside the cave where you can look up at the stalactites. We then walked back it was even more slippery going down but I was glad of my walking boots. We saw a family walking up as we were going down and they wanted to give up and go back down. We told them it was really worth if you keep on going.

    After we made it back to the car we drove to Wainui falls. The walk lead us through lush native Bush and a large swing bridge. The waterfall was beautiful.

    Next we headed to Wharariki beach on the northernmost point of the south island. We walked on a track high up on the hills and then down a sandy track to the beach. The beach was stunning with large sand dunes and archway Islands. In the evening we went out for a meal at ths mussel inn. It was very cosy and relaxed atmosphere inside with a big warm fireplace. Ashleigh had Mexican bean pie and I had vegetable lasagne with salad and a glass of sauvignon blanc locally made . The perfect way to end the day.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Lake Rotoiti/Cape Foulwind/Pancake rocks

    This morning we got up bright and early at 6.30 as we had a long drive ahead of us to Hokitika. Our first stop was lake Rotoiti. It was a beautiful lake surrounding by mountains and we saw a rainbow at the lake. We spotted lots of eels. A guy was feeding them and they went crazy. Ashleigh has a video of them on his phone underwater.

    Next we drove to Kilkenny lookout overlooking Lower buller gorge River. After this stop we went to Cape Foulwind and walked to the lighthouse, we had a lovely view overlooking the Tasman sea.

    Our next stop was pancake rocks. It was a lot bigger than I thought and very impressive. The rocks are made of limestone formed under the sea 35 million years ago. However no one knows how the rocks were formed in to layers. The waves were crashing against the rocks and the waves came up very high. There was also a impressive blow hole. We then drove to Hokitika kiwi holiday park. We arrived in the evening and had an early night we were all very tired after being out on the road for 10 hours. We've got a nice cabin with a double bed and bunk. Everything is spotless here and so clean. The last hostel we stayed at in barefoot Backpackers was not clean at all so it's been nice to stay here.    Lue lisÀÀ

    National Kiwi Centre, Gorge & Hokitika

    This morning we drove to the National Kiwi Centre. At 10am we went to a eel feeding talk. We got to feed the eels meat. The eels were very long, they are the biggest in New Zealand, known as the longfin eel. Unfortunately these eels are declining due to pollution, the building of dams, loss of vegetation near their habitat and overfishing. We also got to touch one of the eels it didn't seem to mind at all. Apparently the young ones are more likely to bite you.

    Next we went to the Kiwi House. There were two kiwi birds. I was surprised how big they were and how quickly they moved. It was great to finally see a Kiwi bird.

    We then drove to Hokitika Gorge. Usually the river is vibrant blue but because its been raining it was a bit murky. It was still impressive and we had a lovely walk through the forest and over a swing bridge. We then drove to Hokitika beach and saw the famous sign just when the sun was setting. We had vegetable tomato pasta in the evening then went to the glow worm dell. It was impressive and the most glowworms I've seen for free.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Helicopter flight to the glaciers

    This morning we drove from Hokitika holiday park to franz josef. We stopped off at a beautiful lake along the way called Lake Mahinapua. We had beautiful views of the snow capped mountains.

    Next we drove straight to Franz Josef village. We could see the mountains as we were driving in. We had a flight booked to see the franz josef glacier and fox glacier for the following day but we went in to ask if we could do it today instead as the weather was good. Luckily they had space for us to do it straight away. We quickly grabbed some lunch from 4 Square. We first had a safety briefing then they walked us over to the helipad. Ashleigh and I went in first we were luckily enough to get front seats with the pilot. We put our belts and headsets on. We were both so excited. It was also our first time in a helicopter. We slowly went up in the air. It was quite smooth. First we went to franz josef glacier. We landed on the glacier and we were able to get out and enjoy the snow and take some photos. The Franz Josef Glacier is approximately 7000 years old and is a massive 12km long . Where the ice descends and meets the river valley below it reaches to less than 300 metres above sea level. The ecosystem around the glacier is extremely unique due to the combination of the ice meeting the Waiho River and the surrounding rainforest.

    We then flew up to see Fox Glacier and Mount cook. The views were breathtaking. I honestly had a tear in my eye. Definitely one of the most memorable moments of our life. After a 30 minute flight we landed. I could of easily stayed up there for longer.

    After this we went for a walk near the glacier. We walked through a rainforest. We couldn't walk close as it wasn't safe so we did a 30 minute recommended walk for that day. We walked past a beautiful waterfall and we could see the mountains and glacier from a distance. We saw a picture of what the glacier used to look like in 1908. And it was right up close where we were standing where it ended, now it is in the distance. It's very sad that it's melting away.

    In the evening we had pizza in the hostel glowworm accommodation. It was a lovely hostel very clean and comfortable beds. We spotted a Kea bird flying around. A kea is a large parrot found in NZ. We then went to Monsoon for drinks and had a dance. It was a fun night!    Lue lisÀÀ

    Morning hike & Sunset at Lake Matheson

    This morning we had a bit of a lie in and then went for a walk in to Franz Josef Town. We then walked over a bridge and had a beautiful view of the river and mountains. We walked to the franz josef glacier walk hoping the weather conditions had improved so we could walk further. Unfortunately it was only the 30 minute hike the same one we did the day before. However we did get a better view of Peters pool the sky was clear so we could see the glacier and mirror reflection of the mountains.

    We then had lunch at the hostel before driving on to fox glacier village. We drove to lake Matheson in the afternoon to do the circular walk. We had a coffee at the cafe there first. The lake was stunning. The most beautiful lake I've seen so far. We even got to see the sunset in the evening. I loved the mirror reflection on the lake of the mountains.

    In the evening we checked in to the next hostel in fox glacier called Ivory towers. We each had a single bed in a room. It was a lovely hostel with a wooden decking outside. We made vegetable mango curry in the evening with rice. We had an early night after a busy day.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Drive to Wanaka

    We checked out the hostel at 10am and went for breakfast in town. We had a yummy breakfast muffin with bacon, egg and hash brown. We set off for a 3 and a half hour drive to Wanaka. We stopped at thunder creek falls. It was raining but it meant there was more water coming down. The waterfall was very high surrounded by trees. It was very impressive. We then drove on to Wanaka Lake Lookout point. It was cloudy but we were able to see some of the mountains. It was a lovely drive. When we arrived at our accommodation the white room which we booked on booking.com we unpacked the car and checked the place out. We've got a beautiful small flat with a large bathroom and open plan bedroom and kitchen.

    We then decided to drive to the famous #ThatWanakaTree which is recommended. We weren't very impressed when we got there. Maybe because the weather was very grey but it wasn't that impressive. We picked up some food from new world and had a relaxing evening in ready for an early start tomorrow to do Roys Peak hike.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Roys peak hike - Toughest hike yet in NZ

    This morning we got up early to take on the 16km Roy's Peak hike. Kyra dropped myself, Conny and Ashleigh off at the start at 09:15. As soon as we started climbing it was very steep. After an hour we were all out of breath. It carried on getting steep all the way to the top. It took us 2 hours and 45 minutes. Some parts of the track were slippery because of the ice especially near the summit where we were walking on the edge of the mountain. We had to be very careful. There were points we wanted to give up but we carried on going. Spurring each other on. I was hiking up in a t shirt as I was very hot from the steep climb. Nearer to the top it got very windy and freezing. I had to put on layers, hat and gloves. Which we reached the top at 1,578m the views were breathtaking. We could see the mountains in the southern alps, the islands in the bay and lake Wanaka.

    Next we walked down the slippery track and had lunch a little way down. We then walked to another point and took some photos. We spent about an hour at the top to take in the stunning views. Next we walked down. It was easier going down but slippery at times. We made it to the bottom at 14:50pm. It was definitely the Toughest hike we've done so far in NZ, but so worth it!

    Kyra picked us up and then we went for a well deserved coffee at the Trout by the lake. We also had some chips. We are now relaxing in as we are all so tired from the hike.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Puzzling World & Drive to Queenstown

    We checked out the room at 10am. We dropped Ashleigh off for a haircut then we had a wonder around the shops in Wanaka.

    After this we went to puzzling World. Puzzling World had a large maze and optical illusion rooms. I really enjoyed our time here. I love optical illusions. Some of the rooms we went in to were famous faces following you as you moved around the room, one where you appear to shrink or grow (see video) another where objects glide uphill and you have to walk on the side and uphill in that room, it made us a feel a bit dizzy. There was also a room with illusionary sculptures. After this we did a big maze and we had to get to the 4 different coloured towers.

    After this we we went to the Burrito Craft for food a burrito van in Wanaka. It was very yummy. Next we drove to Queenstown. We stopped off at Arrowtown a historic gold mining town. We had a look around the shops. I got a beautiful jade ring in one of the gift shops. The drive to Queenstown was beautiful it was raining but we were still able to see some sun on the top of the snowy mountains.

    When we arrived in Queenstown, we checked in to the hostel adventure HQ. I was surprised how big Queenstown was. We are in a 6 bed dorm but we have comfortable beds and our own shelfs built in and space underneath to put our bags. We had a look around the shops in Queenstown and went for a pint at Morrisons Irish Bar. We had KFC in the evening and now relaxing in the hostel.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Bobs cove, Glenorchy & Moke lake

    We started the day wondering around because ashleigh forgot where he parked the hire car. There isn't anywhere to park it outside the hostel but he found a free car park 10 minutes away. Once we found the car we drove to Glenorchy. On the way we stopped at Bobs cove and did the loop track. The water in the cove was so clear and we had beautiful views of the snow capped mountains (see first picture). We then headed to Glenorchy an hour away just outside of Queenstown. Glenorchy is a beautiful rustic town surrounded by native forests and mountains. We had a walk around and got a coffee in a pub with a open fire. It's been quite cold today.

    On the way back we stopped at Moke Lake. It was off the main road down a small track. There were sheep in the middle of the road when we were driving down. The roads were also a little icy so we took it slow. The lake was surrounded by grassland and towering mountains. There were people doing dragon boat racing on the lake when we went there.

    After the drive we walked to Queenstown Gardens which was very pretty. We walked by lake Wakatipu in Queenstown then we got an ice cream from Mrs Ferg Gelateria. I had chocolate Brownie and Gingerbread. The Gingerbread icecream was so good. In the evening we cooked sweet chilli tuna pasta and then went out for a couple of drinks in Pig and Whistle.     Canyon Swing, Gondala & Night out

    Woke up excited and nervous for the Shot Over Canyon Swing. We booked a Tandem cliff jump swing. We got it for half price only $129. We arrived at the shop at 10.20am. They drove us 10 minutes down the road to the shot over Canyon Swing. They first put the straps on us and attached us together. They were joking around with us saying they didn't know what they were doing. I was little nervous. Ashleigh wanted to go head first. The jump was 109m high and you get 60m of free falling. First they dangled us off the edge we had to put our legs up in the air crossed so we were upside down. I was excited but also very scared at this point. We had to lean back and put our arms out. I kept wanting to hold on to the rope. Before we knew it we were free falling upside down towards the water. I was screaming and Ashleigh was laughing at me. However I did enjoy it. We were upright for the last part. It was so much fun. They then pulled us back up to the platform. We watched the video and photos when we got back. I bought them for $30. The jump we did was called the Gimp Boy Goes To Hollywood. We did the scariest one apparently.

    Next we went back to the hostel and then drove to a shopping complex just outside of Queenstown. We stopped at pac n save for lunch. I got some black boots from k mart only $28. After this we got dolled up ready for our night out. We first went up the skyline Gondala for sunset. We had breathtaking views of Queenstown and lake Wakatipu. We were lucky it was clear. We then went to Ferg burger. I had a bombay chicken burger it was very yummy. After this we had some wine in the hostel and played some drinking games. We got chatting to a couple of people in our room who just arrived. Luke was from London but now lives in Dunedin and his friend Viane was travelling NZ. They were both really nice and came out for drinks with us. One of the cool bars we went to was called cowboy QT. We had a great night dancing and got back about 4am.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Lake Wakatipu & Meal out

    Woke up quite late today then we went for a full English breakfast at Brazz. We got a breakfast for only $10 which is very cheap for Queenstown. We also got a free coffee which you get for staying in the hostel we are staying at Adventure Q2. We then went for a walk by lake Wakatipu. It was a little cloudy today but we were still able to see some of the mountains. We then went to Kathmandu. Ashleigh needed a new coat as he managed to rip his one last night. I bought him a blue Kathmandu jacket as an early birthday present. I got a long sleeved quick drying top for hiking. Both were half price in the sale. Kathmandu is so much cheaper here than back home.

    We then relaxed in the hostel and put away our washing. We paid $8 and the staff in the hostel wash and dry your clothes for you and then leave it by your bed which is good service. In the evening we went for a walk down by the lake and went out for a meal at the cow. It was a lovely old pub with an open fire. The reason the pub is called the cow is because they used to keep cows in there to milk. We had homemade garlic bread to start. It was delicious followed by a small pizza. We both couldn't finish it all so we've taken some back for our lunch tomorrow.

    It was our last night in Queenstown. I've loved being here. We just have tomorow morning here then we are off to Te Anau for 2 nights.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Hydro attack & Drive to Te Anau

    This morning we had breakfast and then checked out of the hostel. We were both excited as we had Hydro attack booked for today. Ashleigh did his at 10.50 and mine was at 12.30. Unfortunately we couldn't do it around the same time as those were the only time slots available. The hydro attack was like a jet boat/submarine in the shape of a shark. We both had great fun going under water quickly and then jumping out of the water vertically and it also went on its side. It was an experience like I've never had before. We got photos and videos on a memory stick. We were both smiling the whole time, it was great fun.

    We then had leftover pizza for lunch from the cow. It was still just as good warmed up in the microwave. In the afternoon we did a food shop at pac n save Queenstown, before driving to Te Anau. We had a lovely scenic drive windy roads and mountains while the sun was setting. It took us 2 hours to get to the hostel in Te Anau called Te Anau lake front backpackers. We have our own room with single beds and a en suite bathroom. Its a little dated but cosy.

    Ashleigh and I cooked crispy chicken tacos in the evening for everyone. The kitchen was very busy. We enjoyed it with a nice cold beer. We are having an early night tonight ready for an early start tomorrow. We are going to Milford Sound for the day.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Milford Sound

    This morning we got up bright and early ready to drive to Milford sound to do a boat cruise. We had breakfast and then set off just after 8.30am. It was a cold frosty morning and the roads were icy so we took it slow. There was frost and mist surrounding the snowy mountains it was very picturesque. Completely different landscape to what we've seen before. We went through the Cleddau Valley and then went through the Homer Tunnel 1.2km long through solid rock. The tunnel passed through the Darran mountain range.

    When we were on the highway to Milford Sound we could see the damage from the floods that happened in February. Half the road was damaged so there was traffic lights to get through one lane and you could see the ruins in the river.

    We arrived in Milford Sound just after 11am. Our cruise was not until 1pm so we got a latte in the visitor centre and I had a cinnamon swirl. We walked to check in to the terminal just before 1. We then boarded the southern discovery cruise. We went up on top deck outside. It was very cold but we were lucky it was a clear sunny day, unusual for Milford Sound as it normally rains. Milford Sound is one of the wettest places on earth experiencing rain 200 days of the year.

    Milford sound was out of this world with its towering fiord's cliffs and mountains and so many waterfalls that cascade downwards from as high as 1000 metres. It was very impressive. The first waterfall was beautiful falling slowly. We got right up close with the front of the boat. We could see a rainbow through it.

    We went out right to the Tasman sea. We spotted some seals on the rocks coming back in to Milford Sound. We then went to Stirling Falls. We were at the front of the boat so had a fun experience going underneath the waterfall. The waterfall filled up cups at at the front of the boat We could then drink it. It was very refreshing. This waterfall is 151m high – three times the height of Niagara Falls but the mountain behind displaces the height of it. We also went to an underwater observatory centre. We walked down some steps to an underwater observatory room 10 metres below sea level. We saw different species of black coral and colourful fish.

    We went for a short walk after the cruise to bowen waterfall. Also very impressive. The sun was beginning to set and Milford sound looked beautiful. I was sad to leave this place. We then drove back to Te Anau. We had sausages and mash for tea. We are all exhausted after a busy day today. We are doing a walk on the Kepler track tomorrow morning by Te Anau lake.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Kepler track & Drive to Mataura

    This morning we checked out the hostel by 10. We first drove to Te Anau bird life sanctuary which was free to get in. One of the rare birds we saw was the Takahē that you can see in the pictures. The Takahē is a flightless bird only found in New Zealand

    Next we drove to the Kepler track for a walk. We started the walk at the Kepler track control gates. We walked through a rainforest surrounding by small fern, moss and tall trees. We walked to Brod Bay. It had a lovely beach. Unfortunately it was a bit cloudy so we couldn't see any mountains. After a 2 and a half hour walk we had our packed lunch in the car, cheese and ham sandwiches.

    We then drove to Mataura a 2 hour drive. We booked a air b&b for the night here before we go to the Catlins. It was the straightest drive we've done but was surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. We checked in to the air B&B. We have our own room with a double bed, lounge to use, kitchen and shared bathroom. Conny cooked spaghetti Carbonara in the evening for us all. It was delicious. In the evening we relaxed in and watched a film.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Drive to The Catlins

    This morning we woke up early as we had a packed fun filled day ahead of us. We first drove to Waipapa point lighthouse 55 minute drive away. We walked to the lighthouse by the rugged coast in the hope to see some sea lions. Unfortunately we didn't get to see any. Next we drove on to Slope point. It was raining and a bit misty today. We walked through a field and by the coast. The waves were crashing against the rocks. Slope point is the southernmost point of the south island in New Zealand. Next we drove on to Curio Bay.  We did the penguin walk in the hope to see some yellow-eyed penguins. Unfortunately we didn't see any but we did see some fossilised remains of an ancient forest. We were starting to think maybe today isn't our day to see any wildlife.

    We then drove on to McLean falls. The walk started through a beautiful rainforest with huge tree fuchsia, stands of olearia and podocarp forest. We then came to the shoot of the waterfall we walked up some steep steps and saw the impressive waterfall. It was still raining meaning there was a lot of water flowing down which probably made it more spectacular on a rainy day.

    Next we drove to another waterfall. It was a short 10 minute walk through a forest to Purakanui Bay & falls. This waterfall was not as impressive as the last but it was still very different and was a three-tiered waterfall. Still very beautiful. We then drove on to Surat bay Lodge backpackers to check in. We are staying in a 8 bed dorm. The woman was very friendly and you can tell she likes to keep everything clean and tidy - she told us to take our shoes off outside the room to keep the carpets clean. We've never had to do this in a hostel before. The carpets are cream. Maybe not the best choice of colour in a hostel. The lodge has a garden and chickens. We are also by the beach where the sea lions live. We haven't seen any yet but we are going to have a proper look tomorrow morning to see if we can see any. The woman also told us we can see penguins at roaring Bay between 3-5pm when they come back to their nests. Hopefully we will get to see some soon.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Surat Bay, Roaring bay & Nugget point

    This morning we checked out of fhe hostel and walked down to Surat Bay just at the end of the drive at the hostel. It was a cold, windy and raining today. We spotted a large sea lion on the beach after walking a while. I was surprised how big it was. He was sleeping. We walked a bit further and spotted another one. This one was more awake. I got some pictures of it yawning. It was amazing to see them for the first time.

    Next we drove to Nugget point. We walked to the lighthouse and saw the Nugget rocks. The sea was a beautiful turquoise colour. It was very windy here. We then drove down to Kaka point a seaside town where we met our friend Jeanine who was travelling around the south island the opposite direction to us. We had a coffee and carrot cake and enjoyed a catch up.

    After that we drove to Roaring bay in the hope to see the rare yellow eyed penguins. There was a viewing hut where you look out for them. You can't go on to the beach because they get distressed if you get too close. We waited patiently for about 40 minutes then suddenly we saw one the other side of the beach when we walked out the viewing hut. It was a yellow eyed penguin walking up the beach. A family told us there was another one down on the beach near the hut. It was very cute it fell over a couple of times on the sand. We were lucky to see some. The yellow eyed penguins are one of the rarest penguins in the world and only found in New Zealand.

    Next we drove to Dunedin. We cheeked in to our hostel the Manor backpackers. We are in a 8 bed dorm here. We went to the duke of Wellington pub in the evening. We enjoyed a pint of tribute which I was surprised they had. We had this beer in Cornwall before.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Exploring Dunedin & Otago Peninsula

    This morning we got up about 9am. It was nice to have a lie in and not be rushing around to leave early. I had a day planned for everyone. First we drove to Dunedin botanical gardens. It was a lovely sunny day but a little chilly. It was a beautiful big garden with trees, a large pond, rivers and a few bridges and a heated Edwardian glass house full of exotic plants.

    Next we drove to Baldwin Street- the steepest residential Street in the World. It was quite steep walking up but they had steps on either side to make it easier. We also drove to the train station a beautiful old building from 1906. Seen in the picture below.

    We then enjoyed a curry at a local restaurant/takeaway. For $10 we got butter chicken, rice, naan and a drink. Really cheap for NZ. It was delicious.

    After this we drove to Sandfly bay in the hope to see some more yellow eyed penguins and some sea lions. A lot of places you have to pay to go and see them on the otago peninsula. But I read on a blog online that you can go to Sandfly bay to see them for free. We walked up and down some steep sand dunes to get to the bay. As soon as we arrived we could see 4 large sea lions. It was definitely the place to be to see wildlife. It was a lovely sandy beach and the waves were crashing in. After patiently waiting we saw a little penguin come out the sea. He waddled up a steep sand dune. It looked like he was struggling as the wind was against him and the sand was blowing towards him. We were all hoping the little penguin would make it to the top where his nest was. In the the end he made it. Its a tough life being a penguin. We then spotted another one who walked up a small sand dune stopped half way for a scratch and then wondered off in to the bushes.

    We also saw a sea lion slide down a sand dune it was great fun to watch. We then saw one make his way to the sea, he would take a few steps and then stop yawn and carry on. I managed to catch a video of this on my nikon camera. It was a great day full of wildlife.

    This evening we are going out for a few drinks in Dunedin.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Highway 80 to Mount Cook

    Today we spent most of the day on the road we had a 4 and half- 5 hour drive ahead of us to Mount cook. We first stopped at Dunedin Market. It was mainly food there. We didn't buy anything because it was a bit expensive. Next we went to pac n save to stock up on some food. We left about 11am. It was a beautiful drive especially when we got on highway 80 past twizel on the way to Mount cook village. Probably one of the best scenic drives we have done. There was snow everywhere and the mountains looked stunning. Luckily enough some of the cloud was moving so we could see the mountains. We also stopped at Moeraki Boulders Beach a picturesque beach featuring sphere-shaped boulders on the sand.

    We checked in to the hostel yha Mount cook about 4pm. We went in the sauna and then relaxed in as it gets dark early. We are all tired from all the driving so looking forward to an early night ready for a day of hiking tomorow.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Rainy day in Lake Tekapo

    This morning we checked out early. We were planning to do the Hooker Valley track walk this morning in Mount cook but unfortunately it was very misty/cloudy and raining quite a lot. We decided we wouldn't be able to see much on the hike today so we decided we wouldn't do it today. We are planning to come back to Mount Cook on Tuesday when the weather is meant to improve and do the walk then.

    We drove just over an hour to lake Tekapo where we are staying for 2 nights. Even though it was raining the lake was a beautiful turquoise blue. We arrived at Lake Tekapo YHA hostel. We couldn't check our bags in yet so we went for a coffee in a bar. The cafes were full probably because it was poring it down with rain. We then went for a walk around the lake. We walked to a small church called Church of the Good Shepherd.

    After this we went to the pub next door to the hostel (our dog friday) to watch the rugby. We watched Crusaders vs Chiefs. We were supporting the Chiefs as we saw them play in Hamilton when we were on the North Island. Unfortunately they lost 18-13 but it was a good game to watch.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Mount John Summit

    Had a lie in this morning then Ashleigh and I got ready to do the Mount John Summit hike. We walked to tekapo springs where you start the walk. It was a gradual climb up walking through alpine trees. It was a little icy on the track towards the top and there was snow everywhere. It took us about 1 and a half hours to reach the top. We were rewarded with 360- degree views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. The lakes were a beautiful turquoise. It was a little cloudy but luckily the cloud was high so we were able to see a lot from the top. It was a little chilly when we reached the summit. I unfortunately dropped one of my gloves on the way.

    It was an easy climb going down took us about an hour. When we reached the start of the track Ashleigh noticed my other glove on a rock. I must of dropped it at the start of the track and someone kindly picked it up and left it there.

    After the walk we went to Tekapo springs cafe. Ashleigh had a coffee and I enjoyed a hot chocolate. We had a lovely view of lake tekapo and the mountains. We also had carrot cake.

    In the evening we played cards and had a few drinks.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Hooker Valley - Mount Cook National Park

    We decided to extend our stay at Lake Tekapo for one more night last night and I'm so glad we did because the weather finally improved! It was a sunny clear morning. We got ready for the hooker Valley hike which we've wanted to do for a few days. The hike was in Mount cook national park about an hour away. It was a great drive on highway 80 to mount cook, surrounding by towering snow capped mountains and blue lakes. We stopped and took some photos on the way.

    The track was fairly flat. We walked over 3 long wooden swing bridges, enjoying the views of mueller lake and the mountains. It took about an hour and a half to get to the end of this track. At the end was a breathtaking view of iceberg- speckled Hooker Lake, Mount Cook and the Southern alps. We took in the view here for a while. It really was amazing. We strolled back afterwards enjoying the views once again.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Drive to Christchurch/Quake City Museum

    This morning we drove from Tekapo lake to Christchurch. It was a fairly flat drive. It was raining so we couldn't see much on the drive. We checked in to UrbanZ accommodation backpackers in Christchurch . The hostel room was a bit dull and very basic. The windows are high up at the top so it doesn't let much light in. At least we are only here for 2 nights.

    In the afternoon we went to Quake City Museum. A museum about the Canterbury earthquakes. We first listened to personal stories about the survivors of the earthquake. It was very sad hearing the stories about the traumatic experience these people went through. One guy lost his wife in a falling building. He was flying to to Christchurch when this happened. He got rediverted to Auckland. A woman was in the tower of the Cathedral and was lucky to make it out alive after the sealing fell through. Many people lost their homes and 185 people died. Most of the buildings were severely damaged as a result of the Earthquake and some collapsed entirely. 80% of the buildings in the city were damaged. The third picture below is the Cathedral Spire that fell during the earthquake.

    The earthquake happened on the 22nd February and was a magnitude of 6.3. The earthquake struck at lunchtime when many people were on the city streets. Liquefaction was a major problem after the earthquake. Liquefaction occurs when soil loses strength and stiffness due to earthquake shaking. Loose, sandy soils behave like a liquid as water is forced up to the surface. Liquefaction affected large areas of Christchurch because many suburbs are built on soft soils or sand. It caused damage to roads, buildings, caused flooding and sand volcanoes. I really enjoyed learning about the Earthquakes in Christchurch and found it interesting hearing about people's personal experiences.

    In the evening we went to Little High Eatery, an indoor modern marketplace with lots of different cuisines. We had burritos and a cocktail . It was delicious and reasonably priced.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Christchurch Earthquake 9 years on

    This morning we went back to Quake City Museum because we didn't have time to see the last part of it yesterday. While we were in the museum a man from the Earthquake film in the museum walked past. He was the guy who's wife died during the Earthquake. A guy who was working at the museum said he is happily now remarried.

    After this we went to see the Cathedral. It was sad to see the damage from the earthquake and surprising it still hasn't been repaired 9 years later. After this we walked past lots of abandoned and damaged buildings surrounded by new buildings. The picture with the flooding used to be a large car park that fell down. We also went to see the Cathedral of best Sacrament. You could see where some of the building fell down and many shattered windows.

    We then went to visit the 185 empty chairs memorial Park. The memorial is to all 185 people that died during the earthquake. We were able to pay respect to those who lost their lives during the earthquake.

    For lunch we went out for Thai at The Nook Eatery on Regent Street . I had Pad Thai. It was delicious. In the video we saw a tram go past while we were in the restaurant.

    Next we drove to Summit road carpark in the hope to see a nice view over Christchurch Unfortunately it was raining but some clouds drifted away so we were able to see the city and the sea.

    In the evening we had a fun night out in Christchurch. We first went to the Rock pool bar to play pool and have some drinks. We went to a few other bars for a dance.    Lue lisÀÀ

    Hamner Springs

    This morning we drove to Hamner Springs from Christchurch. It took us about 2 hours to get there. We were all struggling from the night before. We went to Hamner Springs thermal pool and spa to sweat out the hangover. It definitley helped. Kyra had a coupon for a private pool so we all went in there first, it was inside. After this we went in a few of the hot pools. It was a beautiful sunny day and we could see the snowy mountains. The temperatures of the pools ranged from 34 degrees - 42 degrees. The heat from the pools were all natural and contained minerals. It really was relaxing.

    We also had fun in the small water park. It was cold out waiting to que for the double rubber ring but it was worth it. The first slide we went around a big bowl and then dropped in the middle down a slide. The other slide we went down and up a steep quarter pipe. It was great fun! In the evening we drove to Kaikoura. We stayed at dusky dolphin backpackers.    Lue lisÀÀ
