Travel Day 1: Chicago -> Istanbul

Today is the day! We spent the morning finishing up packing and getting everything labeled (in case we lose something!) and ready to go. Uncle John showed up early and we were soon all loaded up in his car heading to O’Hare. At the airport, we got checked in and through security easily and found our gate. We were all TSA pre-approved which helped! O’Hare was busy and big. We grabbed dinner before our first flight to Istanbul. We are so excited for this trip but are not looking forward to the next 3ish days of travel.Meer informatie

Travel Day 2: Istanbul-> Bali

We landed in Istanbul after getting some sleep on the flight, even though it was very warm and we were a little squished. Our next flight wasn’t for 10 hours so we wandered around the airport, got some food, read our books, took naps, and played games. Anything we could think of to kill the time. I think we walked around the entire Istanbul airport. We did end up finding a “nap zone”, which had more comfortable lounger chairs. We chilled there until our gate number was finally posted and we were able to head there.
We made it into our gate, behind a whole separate wall! We were then ready to board and brave another 10ish hours in order to get to Denpasar. So close!Meer informatie

Made it to Bali + Emily, James and Heidi

WE ARE IN BALI! We made it through customs and immigration without much issue, and then headed out of the airport. There were SO MANY people waiting for people from the airport. We walked through all of these people until we found our driver. Mom’s dream finally came true of someone waiting at the airport with a sign with her name on it!
Our driver took us to the AirBnB in Uluwatu where Emily (who had been in Bali two weeks already), James and Heidi (who arrived yesterday) had food delivered from a noodle and dumpling place and were outside waiting for us! We ate, got a quick tour of the place (4 bedrooms and a swimming pool) and are now off to sleep and to adjust to a completely different time zone 13 hours ahead of Wisconsin!Meer informatie

Uluwatu-> Nusa Penida

Today we had an early wake-up call - we had to be ready to go by 7:00am (although our driver showed up at 6:35, so we ended up rushing!). We said goodbye to Leanne and her mom, and loaded 6 people and all of our luggage into a not so big vehicle. We somehow managed to get everything to fit and were off! It was about a 45 minute drive to Sanur. We arrived around 7:50 - and the docks were packed!! SO many people everywhere! Thankfully our driver guided us through the crowd to the correct boat company that we had reserved.
We paid for our tickets, and then had to put bag tags on our luggage to mark the right boat. We then were off to the actual dock. We followed the crowd and were directed to our boat! We handed our luggage off and then boarded the boat ourselves. We all fit in one row. We enjoyed the breeze coming in from the front and cruised 45-50 minutes to Nusa Penida (a small island off the southwest side of Bali)!
Once we arrived we got off the boat and collected all of our luggage. We google mapped it to our AirBnB and took off walking. It was about a 20 minute walk. One of Mom’s luggage wheels broke, so we ended up having to carry it, but we eventually made it! Once we arrived we realized we had ended up coming into the wrong port. We were on the 8:30 boat rather than the 8:00 boat which took us to a slightly different port. Had we been at the correct port it would have only been a 3 minute walk….
We got settled into our rooms (3 separate rooms with a shared kitchen area and another pool right on the north coast), and then after talking with the host, we booked a tour of the west side of the island for the afternoon! We quickly grabbed lunch across the street, and then met our driver just after noon.
Our first stop of the day was Kelingking Beach - wow the views were incredible! There were MANY people, but the color of the water and the rocks (that look like a T-Rex) were stunning to see. We took some beautiful pictures and then were off to the next stops: Angel Billabong and Broken Beach.
Angel Billabong is an area with massive waves crashing up onto the rocks creating beautiful small pools. The broken beach included a neat arch that we got to see and walk across. While exploring Broken Beach we also got to see a sea turtle swimming! We were trying to guess how big he was based on how far away we were and still seeing it quite clearly!
Then we headed to our last stop: Crystal Bay. Here we were able to go swimming! After a long, hot day the water felt so, so good. We all swam and relaxed on the beach. Then we headed back to our car with Gede. Gede was such a great driver! We were lucky to have him as our driver all day. To top it off, he drove us to a place on the beach for dinner so we could watch the end of the sunset.
Finally we made it home at the end of a long, full day, and are all exhausted! We all showered, settled in more and are ready for a good nights sleep. Tomorrow’s adventure: snorkeling!Meer informatie

Snorkeling!

Today we had the opportunity to go snorkeling! We woke up and had breakfast at 7:30am. Our breakfast was cooked by our host, and then our driver, Gede again, picked us up just after 8:00 to head to snorkeling!
It was about a 20 minute drive, and then we had to walk to the snorkeling check-in counter. We quickly checked in, and then were each given a wristband with our company’s name. We were sized for flippers, and then given a safety briefing before heading to the boat. We boarded the boat with about ten other people, and then were off!
It was about a 10 minute boat ride to our first snorkel location: Manta Point. We put on our masks, snorkels, fins, and life jackets and were in the water! Unfortunately we didn’t see any mantas, but we did see some cool fish and coral! Heidi, sadly, got pretty intense motion sickness at this location due to the waves, and sat out the rest of snorkeling, but was feeling better by the end.
Our next stop to snorkel was Gamet Point. Again we saw some beautiful fish and coral. Here we even saw a big school of fish swimming together! Next we headed to Crystal Bay, and enjoyed more snorkeling. Our last stop for snorkeling was Wall point (really a very steep incline that continued into the water). We were amazed at all the fish and coral that we could see.
From there, we were back in the boat heading back to our starting point. We got off the boat and then rinsed off the salt water. We then met Gede and headed back to our AirBnB. We changed and then headed across the street for some lunch. We enjoyed some food before heading back to our Airbnb to relax for the afternoon and do some planning for the rest of our trip!
We booked a handful of things to do in Ubud (our next stop) and to finish out our time here in Nusa Penida. Dad’s eye was not looking good, and he was resting most of the afternoon. When Dad woke up we all walked about 15 minutes down the road to the “apotek” or pharmacy to get dad some eye drops. He was able to get some antibiotics, and we are all hoping it is a magical Balinese eye drop that will cure him quickly!
We ended our evening with dinner at Mae Mae with live music, and then played Euchre (Emily had never played!).Meer informatie

Today was a favorite! We started off with breakfast at our Airbnb - again it was simple but delicious. Then our driver and guide, Gede, met us and we were off!
Our first stop of the day was Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach on the Indian Ocean. We paid admissions and then were stunned by the beautiful views. Dad was not excited about the steep cliffs on either side of us…. but braved it initially. We began a STEEP descent down some stairs, and about 15 steps down, Dad turned around and returned to the top with Gede. The rest of us continued down to the bottom. We had to use ropes and some big steps to get to the bottom. The sand at the bottom was amazing and this became our favorite beach yet, the views and color of the water were breathtaking.
After enjoying the beach and water on the way up Mom did the Bali swing over the water! She even got to wear a beautiful dress! We then finished our ascent back up. There were many more people coming down as we were headed up and it got quite congested! We made it to the top and reunited with Dad and Gede. Then we headed down the other side to Atuh beach. These stairs were not along a cliff wall, and Dad did much better going down! We enjoyed a refreshing swim in the ocean. It was absolutely beautiful, with a window cliff in front of us. We swam for a while and then headed back up. The stairs up were hot! We met Gede and were very excited for some AC in the car :) We stopped for some lunch and enjoyed delicious milkshakes!
We then got back in the car and headed to our next stop: Goa Giri Putri Temple. We arrived, rented sarongs and then headed in. This temple is inside a cave! You have to enter through a small hole (that they claim anybody can fit through!). Once inside it is a massive cave that you can stand up in. Gede told us that many people from Bali come to this temple for ceremony.
Then we headed to our last stop: an ATM… because we needed more cash! We then made it back to our AirBnB and relaxed by the pool and played Euchre for the afternoon. We went to a restaurant just down the beach from us called Kul-De-Sac Beach Bar and enjoyed cocktails and dinner while watching the sunset. We ended the evening playing the Crew!Meer informatie

To Ubud + Mom and Dad’s 33rd Anniversary

Today was a travel day as well as Mom and Dad’s 33rd wedding anniversary! We woke up this morning in beautiful Nusa Penida and enjoyed a delicious breakfast at our AirBnB. We were talking to our host, and she mentioned the potential of an earlier boat back to Sanur at 1:00pm, rather than us having to wait until 4:30 which was our current round trip ticket.
We wanted to check out a beach in town called Kutampi as well, so James, Heidi, Mom, Maddy, and Emily walked into town. James, Heidi, and Maddy stayed at the beach and swam for awhile, while Mom and Emily walked down to the port. They were able to go to the Idola Boat desk and switch to the earlier boat!
We swam for a little while at our AirBnB before heading across the street for lunch, We enjoyed a quick lunch and then met our taxi down to the port. The taxi couldn’t fit all six of us, so we had to take two trips with our luggage, but that was ok because it was only a 5 minute drive.
We boarded our boat a little late, and then were headed towards Sanur! We made one stop to pick up some more people, and then began the 45 minute fast boat ride. The ride was incredibly hot, but we all made it feeling pretty well, and then met our driver at the port. After about an hour and a half drive we were at our AirBnB in Ubud!
Our AirBnB here is beautiful! We have an outdoor kitchen and pool with three bedrooms with their own bath. We chatted with our host briefly, she gave us recommendations for dinner. We made reservations for 7:30pm, and then mom and dad headed to a mart to pick up snacks/drinks for happy hour. We enjoyed drinks and snacks by the pool while we chatted and planned the rest of our time in Ubud. Maddy, James, Heidi, and Emily played the Mind, and we won! We then all got ready and headed out to dinner.
We had dinner at the Copper Restaurant on the rooftop. It was a fancier place with delicious food. It was their seafood night special, so Dad enjoyed lobster, Maddy had shrimp, and Heidi had squid. Mom and Emily enjoyed steak, and James had pork ribs. It was a great time celebrating Mom and Dad’s anniversary!
We then walked the short walk back to our AirBnB and headed to bed. Excited for our first full day in Ubud tomorrow!Meer informatie

Bali, Bintang and Boom Boom

Today we got up, had an hour and a half drive to the gorgeous Bali Telaga Waju River where we went whitewater rafting. Per Dad, if we do nothing else on this entire trip, it will still have been worth it. It was sooooo much fun! We split up into two groups: Emily, James, and Maddy in one raft with a guide, and Mom and Dad in another raft with two guides. (Heidi was having a spa day back in Ubud). We were told to yell Boom Boom every time we were about to hit a big rock, log, or river wall. Mom and Dad were pretty sure their guides were running them into these intentionally because they liked hearing us yell Boom Boom all the time. There were many beautiful waterfalls that our guides were not able to avoid so we had several good showers. The whole trip was about 17 kilometers. We had a couple breaks throughout where we refreshed ourselves with some Bintang, Bali’s most popular beer. We also switched up our groups to boys and girls.
At the end of the river trip we were served a delicious buffet lunch, the highlight of which was the shrimp chips (and more Bintang!)
We had a miscommunication with our driver on the way back and instead of heading straight home we visited a coffee plantation and sampled a number of different coffees and teas (most of us only partook of the teas, we still don’t drink coffee): )
We finally made it home and caught up with Heidi. We all went out shopping, except for Dad who recuperated from the Boom Boom and Bintang. The visit to the local market was overwhelming with the myriad of stalls and items for sale. Some clothes and pictures were purchased. We finished the night having dinner at the Semujaen, which means “Delicious Atmosphere.” We are now heading to bed early for our early early rise tomorrow to climb Mount Batur.Meer informatie

Mt Batur, hot springs, coffee & massages

We had a very early (2:30 a.m.) pickup time from our driver and we were off to Mt. Batur. We were each given a head lamp and a walking stick and were assigned Charlie and Coleman as our guides. Emily wasn’t feeling well (we think she has sun poisoning) so after climbing about a half hour, Emily and Mom decided to ride on the back of motorbikes up the mountain. They still had to climb the last half hour, which was the most difficult, but got there before the rest of us. Maddy, James, and Heidi climbed fairly quickly and left Dad with Charlie as they took their time going up. Charlie was patient and Dad says he wouldn’t have made it without him. At the top, Charlie managed to find all 3 of our groups so that we could sit together. There were probably 500 people waiting at the top of the mountain and it was dark, so that was quite an accomplishment. Charlie then made us breakfast of warm banana sandwiches, boiled eggs, and oranges. The sunrise was amazing. When it came up, we could see that we were above the clouds. Charlie also took us to the very top where you could see steam coming out. Mt. Batur is still an active volcano. After taking pictures, we headed back down, which was not as easy as we had hoped. With the loose rocks, it was very easy to lose your footing so we needed to go slowly.
We finally made it to the bottom where we thanked Charlie for his support (we’re not sure where Coleman ended up) and met our driver and headed to the hot springs to soak our sore muscles. After the hot springs, we stopped at a another coffee plantation and tried a sampler of 14 different coffees and teas. Heidi even tried the special coffee that is made from a coffee bean that has been pooped out of a mongoose. It was very dark and very strong, but Heidi liked it.
After the plantation, we finally headed back to our villa to relax. After resting for awhile, Dad and Mom got their first massages, a 1 hour Balinese massage, and Emily got a post sunburn treatment before dinner. After dinner, we were very tired, so got to bed early.Meer informatie

All Around Ubud

Today was a much more relaxing start than yesterday! We were able to sleep in a little later and had a slow start. James and Heidi were up and ready to go so they headed out to a coffee shop while Mom, Dad, Maddy, and Emily slept in. Once everyone was up we headed out to breakfast at a place with crepes! They were delicious and then we headed to our first stop of the day: Monkey Forest! Emily still wasn’t feeling 100%, so Mom and Emily got Grab scooters to go to Monkey Forest, while Maddy, James, Heidi, and Dad walked. We saw SO many monkeys, and even got a selfie with a monkey!
From Monkey Forest we headed to Tegalalong Rice Terraces - or so we thought. Our grab ended up dropping us off at Uma Ceking - another rice Terrace in the Tegalalong Area. We first grabbed some lunch and then explored the rice terraces. We had a lot of fun with the different levels, and Maddy got to do a Bali Swing in a beautiful pink dress!
We got a Grab back to our Villa, and Emily still wasn’t feeling well, so Emily and Mom headed to a doctor, while James and Maddy did a Campuhan Ridge Walk, and Heidi and Dad chilled. The Doctor gave Emily some cream antibiotics on her hands and feet and prescribed anti nausea and anti inflammatory meds. He wants to run some tests to see if it’s an infection and we will know tomorrow. James and Maddy enjoyed their hike!
We all met up down at the markets, and enjoyed some gelato before dinner. During dinner we got to see some beautiful Balinese dances! We headed back to our Villa to wrap up the evening and get ready to head to our new locations tomorrow: James and Heidi - northern Bali, Mom, Dad, Emily, and Maddy: Seminyak.Meer informatie

Good Bye Ubud and Hello Seminyak

Today we took a Balinese cooking class. Our driver Tata picked us up and we stopped at the market. We tried a few new fruits, salak (snake fruit), mangosteen, and rambutan (red spiky fruit). They were all very good! We also tried some pastries such as a banana cake, sticky rice, milk cake (Tata’s favorite) and rempeyek (a peanut cracker). We also enjoyed these. We walked through the butcher area where they had chicken, duck, and beef. Next we stopped at some working rice fields. We walked through them and saw people harvesting the rice and then hitting it on a basket to remove the rice. Tata mentioned this process would take two days for the field they were harvesting. After harvesting the rice from the fields the outer shell must be removed. It used to take a person two days to remove the outer shell from one kilogram of rice, but now they have a machine that does a kilogram in 5 minutes!
Next it was time for the main event: cooking😃. Our chef teacher was our driver’s cousin Wayan, he owned the whole operation. There were the six of us plus two other couples, one from the Philippines, and one from the Netherlands (Dad had great fun talking to the couple from the Netherlands!) in our group. We made two different sauces and both started with garlic and chilis. We made 7 different dishes, most not too spicy. We also made an awesome dessert called Klepon Cake—boiled green rice dough with palm sugar in the middle rolled in coconut- so good! After cooking we were able to eat what we had created and a delicious feast was had by all😁.
After lunch it was time to go back to Ubud and say good-bye to James and Heidi as they were heading north on their own. We then headed to Seminyak for our last few days in Bali. We found our AirBnB after a crazy car drive in lots of traffic. After settling in we went to the Double Six beach, had dinner at La Plancha and watched a beautiful sunset.🌅Meer informatie

Beach and Tanah Lot

Today was our first full day in Seminyak. The day started a little slowly, but by 10 we were on our way to Tanah Lot . We had our same driver from yesterday, named Gede (no, not all our drivers are named Gede, it just seems that way.). Traffic was really rough, so many cars, a few big busses (way too big for the narrow streets of Bali), and a bazillion scooters, and practically no stop lights.
We finally made it to Tanah Lot and were able to observe several beautiful temples, but since the tide was high we couldn’t walk out to the temple and since we are not Hindu we are not allowed in the Temples proper. We had a nice lunch overlooking the temples and the Indian Ocean, and then headed back into the traffic. When we got back to our AirBnB we chilled for a while and planned tomorrow and things to do in our next stop, Cairns, Australia. Maddy and Dad took Grab scooter rides and Emily and Mom walked to the beach where we had dinner and watched the sunset. The sunset was beautiful and the daiquiris were delicious, but our waiter who was brand new struggled getting our order correct. Dinner still tasted good.
Tonight will be an early night as tomorrow is an early morning with surfing lessons at 7:00 am. We are looking forward to it, but if there is no post tomorrow you will know we didn’t make it ha ha.Meer informatie

Surfing 🏄♀️ and Elephants 🐘

Today was a great day! We started out our morning with an early wake up call to walk down to the beach for surfing lessons at 7am. Mom and Dad were a little concerned but were excited to try their “semi-private” lesson together (they shared one guide and Emily and Maddy each had their own). Our main guide Dewa met us and gave us some instructions on land before hitting the water. It was so much fun. The waves were a good height for beginners and gave us ample time to try to stand up. It took a little while, but Maddy and Emily figured it out and were able to stand up! This was also Emily’s second surfing lesson, so she is almost intermediate already. Mom and Dad enjoyed catching the waves, but struggled to stand up. Mom preferred to surf on her knees, however, she did get up on one of her last waves!
It was a great learning experience and excellent way to start our last day in Bali. We also got to see lots of skydivers fall out of the sky and land on the beach! After we finished our two hour lesson, we walked home, changed and grabbed breakfast at a little Greek place before meeting Gede to head to the Bali zoo. Traffic is still horrible in Seminyak, so it took over an hour to go the 10 miles.
Once we made it to the zoo, we headed straight to the orangutans and elephants. They were having “open-range” orangutans for an hour so we were able to see Septi (female orangutan born in September) swing over and eat some food. It was so cool to be that close to her and watch her interact with people. After our time with Septi we saw some other animals, like monkeys, crocodiles, ostriches, sunbears, and tigers. Then we were able to feed an elephant. We all got our baskets of carrots, bananas, sweet potatoes and cucumbers and headed down to meet Hati. Hati is a 27 year old elephant who likes to eat fast. It was so cool to feel her trunk and skin and watch her consume all this food.
Once Hati was done eating, we finished out the loop of animals at the zoo and went by the lions. We were also able to feed the male lion Deo! He a little scary and a little too close for comfort, but interacting with him that close by was pretty breathtaking (in a good way). We finally made it out and found Gede to head back to Seminyak.
We ended the night with another lovely dinner on the beach watching the sunset and headed home to pack up and catch our flight to Cairns tomorrow!Meer informatie

Travel Day! Bali -> Australia

Travel Day! Today we woke up in Seminyak, Bali, Indonesia and are going to sleep in North Cairns, Queensland, Australia! We began our day with a slow morning packing and then were picked up by our buddy Gede at 8:45 to head to the airport. We made it to the airport by 9:30, and then began working our way through security, checking bags, security, then immigration. We enjoyed an early lunch/late breakfast before our flight at 11:50 - that ended up being closer to 12:50.
There was some turbulence on the flight, but overall pretty smooth. We flew Jetstar which didn’t have a ton of space for us long-legged people. Once we landed in Australia we headed through immigration (The immigration gentleman wished Emily a happy birthday after he saw she was coming to Cairns over her birthday!) and collected our bags. We were questioned about where we had been in Bali due to a African swine fever disease that is affecting livestock in Bali that they are trying to prevent from coming to Australia.
We eventually made it through and got an Uber to our AirBnB! It is a super cute AirBnB with a great balcony! Our host even had a bottle of wine for us! We quickly headed down to the esplanade to catch dinner before restaurants closed. We ended up at a place called Courtyard and enjoyed some drinks and tacos and nachos! We wandered a little bit up past the ferris wheel (we may have to ride it at some point!) before heading back to the AirBnB to plan out our next 4 days in Cairns :)Meer informatie

Cairns- Hitting the Town

Today we took a slow start to help our bodies adjust to another 2 hour forward time adjustment. We are now 15 hours ahead of the central time zone. Amy was up anyway and saw a beautiful sunrise. We walked into downtown Cairns and visited a few information centers to gather brochures to help us plan the next few days. We walked to the Hemingway brewery for lunch and reviewed the brochures we picked up. Right next to the brewery was a huge cruise ship that was loading. After making decisions about the next two days, we rented Beam scooters and went to book our Great Barrier Reef tour. The tour we booked included an introductory scuba dive. As we discussed the scuba dive, we were told that due to some medications taken, Emily and Amy would need to get a note from a doctor to be able to scuba. Emily and Amy took the scooters to the 24 hour medical clinic, but it was too busy and they weren’t able to see a doctor. They were able to set up a telehealth check with an Australian doctor who concluded that one medicine could make us sleepy so we won’t all be able to scuba.
We put away the scooters and walked to the Cairns museum. It is a small museum, great for visiting in a couple hours. Cairns was founded by white settlers in 1876, but the aboriginals were there loooooong before that. Some of the history, such as the efforts in WWI and WWII were great, some of the history of the exploitation of people of color was rather shameful. All the history here is directly tied to the geography of the city: the water (rivers and ocean) and the climate (hot for raising sugar cane) and now the tourism of the Great Barrier Reef.
We finished the day with dinner at Muddy’s Cafe and a rousing game of Crew.
Tomorrow we go to the tropical rain forest and see koalas!Meer informatie

Kuranda + Koalas + Kangaroos

Dreams do come true. Today was an awesome day thanks to Maddy’s planning. We started the day taking a vintage train (on its 132nd birthday!) to the Kuranda Tropical Rain Forest. It was about a 2 hour ride up through the mountains, lots of very cool tunnels (15) and stunning views.
Once we arrived we had to hurry over to check in and get on our Duck ride through the jungle. A Duck is an amphibious truck from World War II. Our guide Lance loved to talk and we learned so much about the rainforest (but he talked super fast, faster than we could listen so we missed a bunch of it😳). But it was still great fun!
After the Duck ride we saw an Aboriginal dance. The big dance they did involved knocking their knees together much like the Charleston (hitting your knees together) During the dance they played the digerido (an long instrument made from wood) and showed us how to play if after. Then they showed us how to throw spears when hunting. They used a stick with a hook on the end that they inserted into the end of the spear and used it to give it a slingshot effect. They could really chuck it! Unfortunately they never hit their target, and even sadder we didn't get to try throwing a spear ourselves. Then we had a boomerang demonstration. This was great as we got to try throwing a boomerang ourselves. They use the boomerang to hunt birds.
Then we got visit the little zoo. We saw Tasmanian Devils, dingos (they were beautiful,) giant crocodiles, one of which was 73 years old and was 16 feet long called Jack the Ripper (apparently he has killed 12 of his wives,) and the highlight: kangaroos! We were able to feed them by hand!
Then came the reason for the whole day: we got to hold a koala! Labor laws for koalas are very strict so we were with the koala for a very short time, but Maddy, Emily, and Amy were allowed to hold Ollie (all 22 pounds of him, he was a bit chubby) and get a picture taken!
Then it was time to head back to Cairns; we took the Skyrail (think ski mountain gondola). The trip took about 1.5 hours with so many spectacular views. The Tropical Rain Forest really needs to be seen to be appreciated!
When we got back we had a some dinner, did some souvenir shopping and ended the night with another rousing game of Crew! Tomorrow: the Great Barrier Reef!Meer informatie

Goin’ Down under Down Under + Em’s B-day

It was a wonderful long day out on the water. We got up early and scootered over to the marina to catch our boat for the day. Em and Maddy grabbed drinks before we loaded up our full boat. The drive out to the reef this morning was full of many safety briefs (about the boat/water safety, scuba diving, and snorkeling), breakfast and some sickness (Dad and Emily needed some fresh air). Maddy was the only one able to scuba dive so she got her three rules and group number and then everyone was ready to start snorkeling. The boat anchored at Saxon Reef, 55km northeast of Cairns, part of the Outer Great Barrier Reef. We were given flippers, masks/snorkels and wet suits for Dad and Maddy and we jumped into the water.
The reef was amazing. So much coral and many many fish to see. We saw a shark and a turtle! It is literally a whole new world down there. Mom’s favorite was a rainbow fish and Dad loved to be able to breath underwater. After about an hour it was Maddy’s turn to try an Introductory to Scuba dive! She and two other people joined her guide Harry. After she reviewed the three rules of scuba diving: 1) keep breathing 2) equalize your ears and 3) follow your guide, and passed the two skill tests, Maddy was underwater. She thought It was so cool to be down there, and be surrounded by coral and fish and highly recommends it!
After the morning snorkel and dive we were served a delicious barbecue lunch, and were able to relax. We traveled to our next location on the reef, about 200 meters away. After our food all settled, we were ready to hit the water again. At this point, we’re all expert snorkelers and were exploring the reef in no time. We saw a turtle again! After an hour or so we headed back to the boat, returned all our gear and started our trek back to the shore. While we drove back we were served a glass of wine and some crackers and cheese. Maddy and Emily hung out on top while Dad tried to get over his seasickness inside with mom.
Once we made it back to land and our hotel, we all got cleaned up and ready for Em’s birthday dinner! We had a reservation at a steakhouse right by the pier. We hopped on our scooters again (Maddy wishes they had cruise control!) and were there in no time. We all enjoyed tasty steaks and a lovely birthday brownie with sparklers to celebrate!
Today was a great day exploring the great barrier reef and celebrating Emily :)Meer informatie

Scavenging in Cairns

Today was a pretty chill day as we spent our last day in Cairns, tomorrow we are off to Sydney. We began the day with the Donut King and picking up some supplies from Woolworths (not the one we used to know.). Then we began a Scavenger hunt around downtown Cairns and learned some of her interesting history. We took a break and rode the Reef Eye, a 7 story high Ferris wheel.
We returned to the Scavenger hunt until we got to the Cairns Aquarium. At the aquarium we listened to couple presentations on sharks and the fish and coral on the Great Barrier Reef. We were able to identify many of the fish we had seen in person yesterday. We finished our Scavenger hunt and began packing to fly to Sydney tomorrow.
We are ending the day eating Chinese takeout and watching Finding Nemo and Finding Dory since we are off to Sydney tomorrow! We hope we can find P. Sherman 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney.Meer informatie

Travel Day! Cairns -> Sydney

Hello Sydney! Today was a travel day from Cairns to Sydney. We were up and ready for our Uber at 7:40, and to the Airport by 7:55! We were able to check in and drop off our luggage with no problem. We cruised through security and grabbed some breakfast while waiting for our flight.
We had to get our carry-on bags weighed (we were a little nervous as we could only have 7 kilos!) but we were all clear. We boarded our plane, and then sat for 1 1/2 hours as some people ended up getting off our flight and they had to find their luggage and get it off the plane. Eventually we were up in the air and headed to Sydney.
We landed in Sydney around 2:00, got our luggage, and called an Uber. We had about a 20 minute drive to our AirBnB. Our AirBnB is right in the heart of “The Rocks” Sydney. This is the original part of Sydney that was founded first. We dropped our bags and headed out to explore! We headed down under the Sydney Bridge and got our first glimpses of the Sydney Opera House!
We wandered for a while looking for a visitor center and ended up asking a very nice police man for directions. He helped us out and we got some brochures with information. We then found a small burger joint for some dinner. Afterwards we headed back through the rain/cold to our AirBnB to plan our next four days in Sydney! We are very excited for the upcoming adventures but it is much colder here than it had been in Bali and Cairns.Meer informatie

All Things Sydney Opera House

Today was a fun filled day exploring Sydney and mostly the Sydney Opera House! We enjoyed a slow start to the day, and then headed out to Pancakes on the Rocks for breakfast. We enjoyed delicious pancakes, eggs, and bacon. From there Dad headed back to the AirBnB to rest because he didn’t feel very well, and Maddy, Mom, and Emily headed to the Sydney Eye!
After about a 20 minute walk, we arrived. We moved quickly through the queue and before we knew it we were at the top! It was really neat to be able to lookout over Sydney in every direction. We saw the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, the airport, the harbor, Allianz Stadium, and so much more. It also helped us get our bearings in the city. We grabbed lunch in the same building before heading to the Opera House.
We had a great guided tour of the Opera House. We learned that it was built over 16 years, and the gentlemen who designed it, Jorn Utzon, actually quit the project before it was finished because of government changes and he was de-funded, and a different architect finished the project. We learned that the outside is made of over 1 million self-cleaning tiles, and that each arch is a part of the same sphere. We got to see inside a couple of theaters and got a mini preview of our show this evening! We also met “Benny the Seal” who lives in the water below and likes to sit in the sun on a ledge just below the walkway!
Next we wandered through the royal botanical gardens. We enjoyed the sunshine and the various plants and trees. We ended at Mrs. Macquerie’s Chair which is a great view point of the Bridge and Opera House for Sunset. We waited for sunset and it was worth it! The views were incredible! We grabbed a quick Uber back to one of Sydney’s oldest pubs on the corner of our Airbnb, Here of Waterloo and met dad for dinner.
After dinner, we headed to Aida - an opera at the Sydney Opera House! We have never been to an opera and now we can say our first opera was at the Sydney Opera house! Pretty cool! It was extremely well done, and we all managed to stay awake and enjoy it even though it was all in Italian!Meer informatie

Manly Beach + the Rocks + the Climb

Today was another great day in Sydney! We enjoyed a slow start with bagels and muffins at our AirBnB. Dad was feeling better this morning so we all headed out to our first stop of the day: Manly Beach. To get to Manly beach we headed to Circular Quay to catch the fast ferry to Manly Beach. We made it on the 10:00am ferry and were off! We enjoyed seats right in the bow of the boat and had great views the whole way! The wind was a bit chilly we but we survived.
Once we arrived, we walked down the corso (the main street) and arrived at beautiful Manly Beach! Wow it was stunning! Beautiful blue water and soft sand. We enjoyed exploring the sand and rocks before following a walkway down to Shelly Beach. Afterwards we walked back towards the main street and enjoyed lunch at a cafe along the way. We picked up some delicious massive cookies and jumped on the 1:30 ferry back to Circular Quay!
Next up we did a self guided (really Maddy guided) walking tour of the Rocks! Maddy lead us to 11 different places. The majority were historical with roots leading back to the founding of Sydney. Then it was time to split up. Emily and Maddy headed to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and Mom and Dad went to try and scout it out, and walk part of the bridge.
Mom and Dad enjoyed the museum learning about the building of the bridge, and walked part way along it. Then they headed back to the AirBnB to wait for Emily and Maddy to be finished. Emily and Maddy had a wonderful time climbing the bridge! The sights and views were incredible.
They were given jumpsuits, harnesses, coats, headlamps, and were ready to go! They began the climb over a catwalk, and then climbed 4-5 very steep ladders and were on top of the bridge! From there it was small steps up to the summit. At the summit the whole group sang Happy Birthday to Emily as it is still her birthday week! They stopped for beautiful pictures and views along the way. The city of Sydney is gorgeous! They began the descent and continued to enjoy the wonderful views. They made it down with no problems, and then met Mom and Dad for dinner. We enjoyed some pasta for dinner and are relaxing going to bed soon.Meer informatie

Beaches, Boutiques and Buses

We started our day by exploring the Rocks Market, just down the street from our AirBnB. It was full of lots of different booths selling food and various art, jewelry, clothes, and other things! We enjoyed a spiral potato on a stick (Mom thinks State Fair should add this food item!) and some pork gyoza dumplings. We had fun wandering and purchased some great souvenirs to take home with us.
Then we headed to Circular Quay where we jumped on a bus and headed out to Bondi Beach! We had fun using public transportation all day to get around! After about 45 minutes we were there. We headed down to the beach and took in the beautiful views. The waves were pretty good and we had fun watching people surf! We then began the coastal walk south along the coast to Tamarama beach and then Brontë Beach. The views were incredible! We grabbed a toastie for lunch and watched some guys playing soccer volleyball. We then took a bus back up to Bondi beach and wandered the shops.
Next we took a bus and a train back towards Sydney to Chinatown! We had a lot of fun wandering and exploring. We found another market! We then enjoyed some cream puffs and a delicious Chinese dinner. We went back to Circular Quay and did a little more souvenir shopping before we went to Lightscapes! It was in the Royal Botanical Gardens, the displays were beautiful. They were all connected to music and had a plant theme.
We headed back to our AirBnB and played some Crew while relaxing. Another great Day in Sydney!!Meer informatie

Blue Mountains and Blowouts

Today we took a sunset trip to the Blue Mountains, perhaps the oldest mountains in the world. We took a small tour bus with 8 other people and our guide/driver, Derek. Derek was entertaining and very knowledgeable. He has had many jobs including day trader, ICU nurse, city bus driver, part time college professor, and retiree at 42, and now for fun he does these tours. Later he disclosed he had a PhD in philosophy. We loaded up at 10 AM and headed west.
Our first stop was a little before the mountains called Orchard Hills where we stopped to observe some kangaroos. One was standing by a bush nearby just watching us. We saw four others hop away from us in the field. It was very cool!
Our next stop was in a small mountain town called Glenbrook where we ate some lunch. Then back onto the bus to the Blue Mountain National Park. Our guide led us on an approximately 2 hour hike to Wentworth Falls and back. Along the way there were numerous breathtaking vistas. Fun fact: they are called the Blue Mountains because of the very fine oil the eucalyptus tree leaves give off into the air that reflect blue in the sunlight. One tree had flowers that if you ate them provided energy or after they died were good for starting fires. Ken headed back before the end as the hike involved narrow trails that were very high with sheer drop offs. Amy, Maddy, and Emily went merrily onward oblivious to the obvious danger of which that Ken was all too aware. The hike included an optional hike down to the bottom of the waterfall. It was just beautiful. The downside was that it was an additional 390 steps down and then back up. We made it!
After the falls we headed to the Three Sisters. The Three Sisters are three stone monoliths that aborigines believe are three sisters turned to stone by their medicine man father during battle to protect them (they wanted to marry three brothers from a different tribe which was what started the battle). But the father died in the battle and no one was able to undo the spell. On our way there we heard a weird noise from one of the bus’ rear tires. It didn’t seem to affect driving, so we kept going. While we looked at the Three Sisters our Guide checked out the tire. The outside of the tire looked like it had shredded. We all agreed to drive to the next stop and Derek was going to change the tire while we watched the sunset. The stop for the sunset was called Lincoln’s Rock. Once again Ken saw the obvious danger of being in high places that no one else did, and he went back to attempt to help our guide change the tire. Amy, Maddy and Emily shared some wine and cheese and crackers sitting on some rocks and watched the sunset over the mountains. No one was injured on the rocks including the woman being photographed by about 5 photographers, but there were the remains of two cars that had crashed on the hill. It took awhile after the sunset, but the afterglow was an amazing red. The guide was not able to loosen the lug nuts to change the tire so we were given the choice of driving back to Sydney slowly (80kph) or taking the train. Four of our group opted to take the train back, we stayed with the bus. After we got on the highway, we heard the rear tire blow out but since there were two tires on both sides of the rear axel, it didn’t have much of an impact. Derek got us all back to Sydney safely and we made the tired trek back to our apartment to get ready for New Zealand!
We ended our night packing, and since it is our last night in the land down under Amy, Ken and Maddy all tried vegemite! They were not fans. Our visit in Australia supported Alexander’s theory that no one has bad days in Australia. 😀Meer informatie

Travel Day! Sydney -> Auckland

Most of today was spent at the airport or in an airplane! Our flight left at 11 so we got to the airport early and were able to get checked-in and through security fairly easily. This was the busiest airport we had visited and included the longest wait times through security. Once on the plane, despite having babies/small children on both sides of us, the flight went well and we landed in Auckland in no time. But we did lose two more hours due to the timezone. We are now 17 hours ahead of Milwaukee! Crazy!
After a few hiccups getting off the plane and through all of customs (involving a water bottle and some apples) we finally made it out of the airport! It was super windy and raining pretty hard when we met our Uber, but by the time we got to our apartment, it was merely drizzling. We settled into our apartment on the 30th floor (Dad is not a fan of the floor to ceiling windows and open patio, but Maddy, Emily and Mom love the view), and headed out to dinner. We enjoyed a lovely dinner at the Shakespeare bar (Auckland’s oldest pub), despite Maddy’s burger coming without a bun, and then relaxed before heading to bed early to be ready for our Hobbiton pickup at 6:30am tomorrow!Meer informatie

Gandalf, Geysers + Glow Worms

Today was a great day in New Zealand (named incidentally, after Zeeland in the Netherlands 😁). It started bright and early with a 6:30 AM pick up by our tour guide and driver, Chris. He had a lot of interesting facts and information! We picked up two other groups, a family of four from Houston and three travelers on holiday from the Netherlands.
After an hour and a half bus ride we arrived at middle earth (Hobbiton, the location where the outside scenes from Frodo Baggins’ village in the Lord of the Rings films were filmed). It is out in the middle of farmland, with rolling green hills covered with sheep and cattle. We (really just Ken) got some souvenirs in the gift shop and then a Hobbiton guide led us through the village. They went into an incredible amount of detail making the six middle earth films, including a large fake oak tree where each one of 300,000 plastic leaves were individually painted and attached. We got to see Bag End, Bagshot Row, and the mill. The hobbit holes were varied in size to account for the different size of the characters (Hobbits are a little over 3 feet tall and the wizard Gandalf was full-sized), despite all the actors being regular sized people. We ended the tour at the Green Dragon Inn where we were given a souvenir mug and cup of ale or cider. We sipped our ale as we sat by the toasty fire.
After Hobbiton we headed for Rotorua which sits on two tectonic plates which are hitting each other creating a giant area of boiling mud and water. There is also a geyser called Te Puia that erupted 15-20 feet into the air. We had an excellent buffet meal at the geyser.
Our final stop of the day was at the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves. We were led on our tour by Nah, a descendent of the Māori Chief who discovered the cave. After a brief talk about the history of the cave we went in. It was so cool! There were so many stalactites and stalagmites slowly (so very slowly) growing together. We made it to a large space called Cathedral Cave which has amazing acoustics. We were regaled by a couple of our fellow tourists with songs! A river runs through the cave and we took a boat out onto the river to see the glow worms. In order to see the glow worms there are no lights in this part of the cave and it was almost pitch black. We moved away from the dock and a short way down the river we came into a section of the cave with thousands of bright blue glow worms across the ceiling. Our guide moved the boat by pulling us along a rope strung from the walls. Due to recent flooding we could not continue down the river so we sat for a few minutes just marveling at the beauty on display above us. It was then time to climb out of the cave and return to the bus for our 2 1/2 hour drive back to Auckland.
We finished the day with dinner at the Chargrill and headed back to our AirBnB to plan our last day on vacation. Tomorrow night we head home. What a long, strange, wonderful, trip it’s been.Meer informatie
