    Final Day

    2022年4月30日, アメリカ ⋅ 🌧 75 °F

The last day of my trip is here. I'm officially home at the beach as I'm writing this.

Friday night I had driven to somewhere in South Carolina and had stopped at 4:30 pm to make a few last minute business calls before the week ended, then I slept for 5 hours in the gas station parking lot. I headed out at about 10 pm and hit the road. Since that one late night on Whiskey Row, my sleep schedule has been wacky. I pull over and sleep when I'm tired, and then I drive some more until I've reached my destination or am top tired to drive.

By 3 am I made it to St. Augustine. Driving up I-75, I spotted Buc-ee's and after hearing that it was an experience, I wanted to stop on the way back down. My GPS has routed me to I-95 so I had to go 30 min out of my way to hit Buc-ee's in St Augustine. I arrived at Buc-ee's at 3 am Saturday morning. I should have gone in the store then, because by 9 am the place was a mad house. If you've never been, how do I describe it? It's like a Wawa, Cracker Barrel, and camping store all in one. The place is huge. They have beef brisket and they are chopping it up right there. The guys chopping the brisket are wearing aprons and yellow cowboy hats. They have the bugs make your own coffee station that I've ever seen, the cutest gifts, decor, and rings of recreational and camping gear. I bought a brisket and egg taco and a coffee. I walked past about 50 ice freezers as they are lined up on all sides of the building with a sign that says, "we have the right to limit".

I have no pictures because I lost my phone! Well, I didn't lose it because I knew exactly where it was, but I couldn't get to it. When I woke up that morning, there was no signal so I placed my phone in the window behind the kitchen cabinet to see it I could get a bar. I left it there while I was getting dressed. When I closed the door the van jostled and my phone fell into a one inch gap between the buffet and the van sidewall. It was way down in there and there was no way to get it.

So now I had to find my way home without Google maps. I couldn't remember the exact route I had taken to St Augustine in the past, but I headed south on 95 looking for the next major east west road that looked like it might go to Tampa. It's not fun not having a phone. I felt such a sense of desolation and disorientation. The stress was building and I could feel my muscles tightening. Of course, I found I-4, and I knew my way from there.

I had really wanted to stop by the Blue Beacon truck wash in Dade City, but I needed to get to General RV to see if they could get my phone out of the wall for me. It was a Saturday, so I didn't even know if the service department was open. Definitely couldn't call them. Love bug season in Florida has begun and they are everywhere. I knew if I went to Blue Beacon, by the time I parked the van in Brandon it would be covered in love bugs again.

General RV was a success. I told the lady the story and she laughed so hard. "Do they even sell Rand McNallys anymore?" we wondered together. Thankfully, not being open but having a skeleton crew, they were very sympathetic and came to my rescue. Between removing one panel and using a long wire stick with a magnet on the end, they were able to pull my phone out. My life was whole again... or was it? It's a love hate relationship I have with my phone.

Back home to the birth center lot where the RV hookups are, I rotated the van different directions as I hand washed off all the bugs and dirt from 6 different states. It took over 3 hours. The front of the van, I scrubbed with a plastic scubby. My hands are peeling today. I was standing on an aluminum ladder, in a puddle of warer, holding a water hose as a bad storm was coming in. I quickly emptied my most important things from the van to the car, hooked up the van to shore power, set the van AC to 82, and set off towards home. Arriving home, I scrambled for my keys that had been buried and placed somewhere I couldn't quite remember. The condo smelled sweet, and my hanging string lights that I left plugged in on a timer greeted me brilliantly, "Welcome home".

I have no pictures from today, but I've posted some other pictures that Rebecca sent me. Here's a few things that I've learned on this trip about van life... what appliances I cannot run off shore power, how the electrical system of the van works, how to live off the grid for 10 days, how to stay warm, the best positions for sleeping on a slope without falling off the bed, what I need and what not to bring next time, how to pack and store things efficiently, how to fill water without hose hookup, how to save grey tank from filling, how to dance while driving.

    Here are the final numbers:

    Total Miles: 2,477
    Total Days: 14
Days Off Shore Power: 11, the last 10 days
    Total Fuel: $827.76
Total Damage: rock chip in the windshield which can probably be filled, two GFI electrical outlets that won't reset/breaker flipped I suspect- likely breakers are behind a panel somewhere, table broken as the metal stand stripped right out of the particle board it was attached to. Not sure I want to fix the table as it will just break again. I'll try to find an alternative or live without it.
Total Hot Flashes: 561, God help me!

I love van life and I had an amazing trip. Can't wait for the next one!

    Return To Hot Springs

    2022年4月29日, アメリカ ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Rebecca's flight was at 7 am, so we traveled the 4 hour drive from Louisville to the Knoxville airport through the night to have her there by 5:30 am. We traveled a couple hours until around 1 am when I started to feel myself nodding off. So an hour and a half away from the airport, we stopped for 90 min to sleep before continuing the trek. After I dropped her off, I slept 2 more hours. Sleep the last two nights has been in small increments and definitely insufficient. My body is feeling it.

I had scheduled another appointment at Hot Springs Resort and Spa, and I'm really glad that I did. It was a completely different experience. I arrived a few min early for my 9:15 appointment. The day is about 25 degrees warmer than last week and the trees are much fuller and greener. I thought I was getting tub 5 again but I got tub 15. This tub is much less expensive, doesn't have the fire, and is located at the center of the back of the property on the creek. It's just as beautiful, peaceful and private though. More light filters in. It's situated next to a gentle waterfall on the creek, so I listened to the gentle sound of the water bubbling down the creek for the next hour. To my right, suspended above the creek are two large ducts to pipe the hot mineral water over to the tubs. The water in tub 15 is considerably warmer than hot tub 5. I'm very happy about that. I contemplate that this must be because it's closer to the source and has less time to travel through the potentially cold metal conduit before reaching the tub. I'm glad I got to visualize the pipes though and see and feel the hot water coming into the tub, because after my last experience I was thinking the whole mineral water thing might just be a scam. I'd booked my second spa experience before doing the first, otherwise I might not have come back. I'm really glad I did though.

I had a whole hour in the tub. I'm guessing the water was 102 degrees. It was relaxing. I listened to the creek and the birds singing. The train went through town, and I could see it as it crossed the creek. Returning to the van, my legs felt like noodles.

After 4 days of two people living in the van, going like mad people from place to place, the van needed some serious clean up and organization, so I sat there in the resort parking lot, cleaned up the van and had my coffee.

I then drove into town, walked around a bit, bought a magnet for my van at the outfitters post, and a another bottle of that fantastic wine at the gourmet store next door. The brewery and restaurant wasn't open yet, so I walked to the Red Bridge and then returned to the van and took a short nap. As I pulled out of my new favorite little town, the mayor and two other women were standing outside city hall, one of them was smoking. The voting polls were open. The hikers were repacking their backpacks and the Harleys were lined up on the street as the bikers were arriving for lunch at the brewery. Part of me wanted to stay and enjoy the Friday afternoon. The brewery is attached to a bar and behind that is a restaurant that serves tacos and lots of other hipster delicious foods. There's a large outdoor area with picnic tables and a band stage. It looks like a really fun place to hang out. But I must travel on.

I'm not missing home. I wouldn't even say I'm ready to come home. I miss my friends and family at home, but they are mostly managing fine without me. I heard gut wrenching news about a fatal drug overdose of a young girl that lives in my condo. So sad.

I want to get back home by Saturday so I have more than 24 hours to get ready for next week. I want to see my new best friend Kris and finish watching season 6 of Outlander together. I want to see my favorite local band on Sunday night at the Hippy. I want to walk the beach and see the sunsets once again. Onward south.

    Whiskey Row

    2022年4月28日, アメリカ ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Remember that time we slept on Whiskey Row? Yes, we did. Last night we were parked on Main Street in downtown Louisville- Whiskey Row. At 7:15 am I heard the traffic start for the day, zooming by us, and knew I needed to move or pay the meter. So I moved the van to a paid parking lot, $6 for the day. Then we slept another 3 hours.

We saw more of Louisville today and I have a few more stamps in my Bourbon Trail passport. Today we went to the Frasier Bourbon museum, Old Forester, Michters, Angels Envy and Evan Williams. The highlight of the day was the tour at Old Forester. We only did Bourbon testing there, although we bought a flight of Michters at dinner at Merle's Whiskey Kitchen, and a couple 1 oz bottles at Angels Envy.

    Bourbon Trail Day 1

    2022年4月27日, アメリカ ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

After our visit to Maker's Mark, we headed up to Heaven Hill distillery and then Jim Beam. We didn't do tours at either, but we stopped to admire the bourbon and the distillery. Our final destination was downtown Louisville where we hung out in Nulu at Bar Vetti, Gerti's Bar and surprise speakeasy below. Then we headed to Main St to Stevie Ray's Blues Bar. It was open mic night and the local talent was awesome. The night went on until 4 am playing darts at a small dive bar on 3rd.もっと詳しく

    Makers Mark Distillery

    2022年4月27日, アメリカ ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Today we hit the bourbon trail. I specifically chose the distilleries we went to because they are some of the most well known, but also because of reviews. Many people said Makers Mark was their favorite, the most beautiful and interesting. We went there first, so we spoiled ourselves.

When we arrived 20 min before the 1pm tour, there were 2 spots available on the tour. We jumped in on that tour of the distillery. We saw the whole process from grinding to cooking, fermenting, proofing, barreling, tasting, labeling and putting the wax seal on. They have their own spring fed lake on their 1000 acres that they use for cooking their grains. Whisky is spelled without an e intentionally because of Margie the founder's Scottish background. They use an old school printing press to make all their bottle labels. About 20-25% of the alcohol placed in the barrels evaporates through the barrels during the 5-7 years of aging. The Fungus in the air from the vapors causes the buildings and trees to turn black. This is why their buildings are black... to hide the ugly Fungus.

We got to taste 5 types of their bourbon, buy a bottle and then dip the lid in the wax ourselves. I bought my bourbon trail passport and got my first stamp. We walked out with a bottle of freshly waxed 46, a bottle of mint julip and some mint bourbon chocolate balls. On the road to the next distillery.

    Mammoth Cave National Park

    2022年4月26日, アメリカ ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Rebecca likes camping, she says. This is her first time camping. She loves nature and hiking as much I do, so we've been doing quite a lot of that. This morning we set out on a 3 mile hike on the trails here in the National Park. We saw some deer on the trail.

After our hike, we hung our hammocks before heading out on our first cave tour. We did the Frozen Niagara section of the cave. Then after dinner, we did a lantern tour of the cave. So amazing! More than 400 miles of cavern and they keep finding more connecting caves.

Overall we walked over 7 miles today, saw a couple more deer on the trail waking back to the campground. Our camping neighbor Matthew from Rhode Island who has been tenting all month since he was laid off, shared his campfire with us. We shared our moon pies with him and taught him how to make an instant smore by heating a moonpie in the fire.

Mammoth Cave Day 1 of 2

    2022年4月25日, アメリカ ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

What a great day! This morning I swung up to north Knoxville to pick up my cousin, Rebecca, who flew in from Tampa and stayed with her friend in Knoxville over the weekend. We then hit the road toward Mammoth Cave.

We made a few stops including Walmart for groceries and Cumberland Mountain State Park where we hiked the 2.8 mile Pioneer short loop trail. I installed the AllTrails app on my phone which was amazing to know exactly where I was and track my hike. I wore my new hiking shoes, Altras, and I almost stepped on a snake, 6-7 feet long, 2.5 inches in diameter. Rebecca has the pics.

We were routed on all these great scenic back roads and were listening to The Dead South bluegrass sound.

Mammoth Cave is in central time zone. So we arrived here about 3:30 pm. Went to the camp store first and bought firewood. Then went to the visitor center where we bought tour tickets and watched a historical film. I bought a magnet for the back of my van! First one.

Then we came and set up camp. I got the feet on the grill and used the grill for the first time. I cooked little red potatoes and 2 hamburger patties which we placed on a Spinach, beet, Artichoke and feta salad. While I was cooking Rebecca brought out a charcuterie board and wine and we started a fire. What a night. I think it's just beginning, lol. There's much more that Rebecca captured, but might have to catch that on Facebook.

Next up, Moon Pies on the fire.

    Last Day in Knoxville

    2022年4月24日, アメリカ ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

After a wonderful, long weekend with Moriah and Eddie in Knoxville, I'm pulling out this morning. Yesterday was our final day. After brunch at Jake's, we headed to Pigeon Forge to enjoy some mountain views and found ourselves at the Curahee winery. We did wine tasting and bought a few bottles. I bought Strawberry wine for Rebecca whom I'm picking up in an hour on the north side of town. The winery was in a shopping plaza with a little kiddie train, a large grassy area with corn hole, large chess and checkers. We walked around and watched people fly up this ride real fast only to be dropped down. We went into Flavortown and walked around a bit. Then at REI, I became an official lifetime member of their Co-Op. I bought some walking shoes and walking sticks as well, so now I'm all ready for the bourbon trail. Last night we went to Firebird for a nice steak dinner and carrot cake for dessert. I took a nice long bath after dinner. Might not get one of those for awhile.

On to Mammoth Cave today. We're expecting rain and cold again. I see a campfire and strawberry wine in my future. Right now, enjoying my morning coffee.

    Sunday Brunch

Scrambled Jake's was voted best breakfast in Knoxville and I can see why. Southern grub with a sophisticated flare. I had the Fungus Among Us scramble.

    Downtown Knoxville

    2022年4月23日, アメリカ ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Downtown Knoxville is pretty awesome! I love how it is a metropolitan area with all the venues of a large city, but yet it is so accessible, making it feel more like a small hometown. It's the people there and the way they interact with the city mainly that gives it that smaller hometown vibe. Today there was an EV show, the Dogwood Crafts Festival, and lots of prom couples. Moriah and Eddie only live about 10 minutes away from Downtown, so we got there quickly and parked for free in the parking garage.

Knoxville was home to one of the last World's Fairs in 1982. They built the Sunsphere and an outdoor theater just for the event. We paid $5 to go up inside the Sunsphere. It's a 76 ft diameter gold ball that is 26 stories high, where we walked around, had a 360 degree view of the city, read about the city, the history of the sphere and the World Fair.

From there we visited the Knoxville Museum of Art that features Tennessee artists, Asian artists and Women artists.

After that, we were feeling quite hungry, so we headed to Market Street where we saw mass hula hooping and street musicians and ate lunch at Stock and Barrel. Delicious hamburgers there.

We then walked up Gay Street across the railroad tracks to the winery, but they were having a private event today so were closed. We headed back down Gay St to Blackhorse Brewery for a drink. And then found ourselves back at the park at Market Street where we took some photos before heading back home. After all that walking in the hot sun, full bellies and drinks, we came home and took a nap.

    Knoxville is beautiful!
