    Berry

    March 8 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Mary had recommended that we stop at the town of Berry, nearly an hour away from Mary’s, on our way up to Evelyn‘s (George’s cousin).

So we stopped off there and had a coffee and pastry. It was a quaint town.

Then on the road again arriving at Evelyn and Carlos’s just after 2pm. Greeted with a lovely watermelon smoothie.

    On to West Pennant Hills

    March 8 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

While driving to Evelyn’s, we noticed a crack on the windscreen that kept growing. So the first thing we had to do when we arrived at West Pennant Hills, where Evelyn and Carlos (her husband) live, was to ring the rental firm to get them to organize the windscreen replacement. Once done, Carlos and George drove to the local garage and left the Crib with them overnight.

Evelyn suggested we go into town but first visit Fran nearby at the Meadowbank Grove Community Care Centre. Fran is George’s oldest cousin, who had visited us in Donegal with her daughter, Joanne in 2013. Though suffering from dementia, Fran was her usual frank, lovable, cheerful self. George took her through the McPherson book he had produced for her. She recalled memories of those she recognized like Martha (George’s grandmother) part of the Irish family that were holy 😄

Then we went into the city by ferry. It was awesome to see the city lights and feel the buzz of a Friday evening in the centre of Sydney. We had a bite to eat and a drink in a restaurant near the Opera House before heading back on the ferry.

    Drive around Sydney

    March 9 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Today Evelyn and Carlos took us for a drive around the city… being a Saturday it was busy. Sydney has so many traffic lights! We saw the Sydney Opera House and Sydney harbour bridge, from the opposite bank of where we were last night. Some terrific views of the city especially at Panos Gardens giving sea views and the city skyline at Dudley Page reserve.

We stopped at Watson’s Bay for lunch. Delicious fish food. Afterwards, we walked towards MacQuarie Lighthouse along the cliff top.

Towards the end of the drive, we went to see the McPherson’s first house in Darling Street, where there was a quaint terrace house (now worth 2.5 million AUD) that Evelyn’s Mum and Dad along with her and 9 siblings lived in when her family immigrated to Australia in 1961. Some years ago, her mum had given it away because there was so much wrong with it. We could say “if only” but it hasn’t stopped the family and offspring flourishing.

Once back home, we relaxed for the afternoon. Then Gabriel, Evelyn’s daughter and family came over and cooked Nanchos for dinner made by Dan, Gabriel’s husband, who is a cook 🧑‍🍳 😀 Lovely to meet them all.

    Leaving Evelyn’s onto Tracey’s

    March 10 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Up early, Carlos took us for a walk in the bush… I thought it would take a half hour but after two and a half hours, Carlos led us back to his home exhausted 😂 It was amazing though… such a wide variety of vegetation with creeks almost empty (but gets full in the rainy season and can hardly be crossed) but what impressed me most was the noise of the bird life. Just about caught a cockatoo on camera. Amazing.

When we got home, Adrian, Evelyn’s son, and family were waiting for us. What a lovely family! Angelica, with children, Julianne and Marcus. Such chatter as they all spoke fast speaking in Spanish. After a late breakfast, we packed to head on to Tracey’s, Fran’s daughter. Though we thought we would have company… the children didn’t want to get out of our Crib 😊

A half an hour down the road into the city to Birkenhead Quays. Richard (Tracey’s husband) was waiting for us to steer us into the downstairs car park. Up to 9th floor and a view to behold of the city… you can just see the flags on top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the distance. Lots of catching up as in every McPherson family we’ve stopped with. 😀🥰

I opened Abbie’s card she gave me for Mother’s Day (well, it was back home in Ireland, not here) and placed on the kitchen partition for all to see. Mustn’t forget to pack it when we leave 😄

Early to bed for me at 6pm (!)… jet lag continues to arrest me 🙄 while George talked on with Richard and Tracey.

    Trip to Blue Mountains

    March 11 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

    What a day!

View from the balcony at dawn and before we started out, a photo on the balcony of the four intrepid explorers. Early start to get a bus and then a 2 hour train to Katoomba passing the Queen Victoria building that is a shopping mall and a sign that said George Street 🙂.

On the train… recognition at last as we pass the Dr George Munro Bridge 😂. Arrived at Katoomba and walked through the town and saw a policeman on duty 😄

Once we got to the Blue Mountains, I’m glad to say I recognized the Three Sisters and the surrounding landscape having been driven there by Uncle Sammy and Aunt Emma 23 years ago, when Abbie, Ruth (my cousin from Perth) and I stayed with them. Richard asked an attendant about the various options to go down to the bush floor. We decided against the cost of $55 each for the cable car etc. when told it was only 1000 steps down, an hour’s walk to the next set of steps that were much easier to climb, so we should go the free way. Well, we paid for it in more ways than one. It was tough on our knees going down so much so the hour’s walk was tough too. Legs felt like jelly. So glad we brought water and food for wee breaks along the way though. Then for the climb up. Not as many steps but still as arduous. Rewarded by views of the Katoomba Falls (though not as spectacular as in the rainy season) and a lizard absolutely still on a log. We arrived at Echo Point 3 hours after we’d started, an hour longer than the attendant told us it would take. Methinks she’s never done it 😄… we were exhausted but relieved!

A bus, train and bus back to Drummoyne and a hearty meal did the trick to revive us. Though not me, I fell asleep while talking 🤣

    Leisurely morning

    March 12 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Out for an early morning swim in the swimming pool, having breakfast with Tracey before she went to work, editing photos and recording the trips’ log, packing and had some lunch before heading off up to Lakeside Park where we will be using the campervan for real… our first night sleeping in the crib!Read more

    Manly Beach

    March 12 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

On to Manly Beach where we parked for an hour so we could see the beach and then walk through the Corso with its wide variety of wee shops to Manly Harbour. I recognized the beach by its trees that line the esplanade. We had to paddle, of course, a stark difference in temperature to our sea this time of year!Read more

    Night out with the Hanna’s

    March 12 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

We can’t get used to the distance and all the traffic lights in Sydney! We ran late finding the camping site at Lakeside Park (it was fun even trying to find our allocated spot too). We had booked ahead and all the info we needed but their map wasn’t that good. We got the van prepared for sleeping for our first night in the campervan and changed. We eventually arrived at my Aunt Emma’s in Dee Why, only 10 minutes late. Spent time talking to Aunt Emma and showing her photos from an album I had printed for her and reminiscing.

Carol, my cousin, came home from work and then took us to Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club for a reunion with all the Hanna clan. It was great to see Ikuzwe, my niece, could join us too.

The evening was too short but it was lovely to see them all. ❤️

    North Narrabeen

    March 13 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We had a good night’s sleep in the campervan. The camp site had all the amenities needed. After showering and preparing the van for driving, we went to look at our surroundings at North Narrabeen, the nearby lake and headland with its beaches.

First stop was breakfast in the cafe across from the walkway into the camp site. Delicious food… so far I’m not doing enough exercise to compensate for the food I’m eating but I’m on my holidays 😂
