  • Haast Pass Lookout and Fantail Falls

    26 de enero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

For the next place, I had to walk up quite a steep hill for around 15 minutes to get a nice view over Haast Pass. On a clear day, it must be really nice.
I was unlucky to have two short rain showers on the way up. No longer than 5 min and after that, the sun was coming out again. It’s not to bad! The weather forecast was actually saying it could rain more during the day, so I am lucky.

After a short drive, I reached Fantail Falls. This is a nice short walk through the forest to come to the falls.
Nice falls and I know why they are called Fantail Falls, as they are spreading out wide as the tail from a Fantail!

  • Gates of Haast and Thunder Creek Falls

    26 de enero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

The first stop was just beside the road and I had to search for a path down to the river as the main track was closed. I found a very small path beside the bridge and was climbing down there to the river. It was definitely worth it to do it! The river is really wild here and so nice to look at.

Only a few kilometers further on the road was already the next waterfall, the Thunder Creek Falls. This one is a really big one! Also here it was only a short walk from the carpark to the waterfall.

This was a really nice forest I had to walk through to come to the river and the waterfall.
Many very old trees. Really nice!

  • Ships Creek, a lookout and Knights Point

    26 de enero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

The last stops for today are already on the west coast. The weather is still ok, but it gets a little bit colder now and more and more clouds are pushing in from the ocean.

First I stopped at Ships Creek, where you can climb up a tower for a nice view of the ocean and the area around. The ocean is really scary today!

The next two pictures I took beside the road! I think this is the best view you can have! 🤩

The last two pictures are from the Knights Point Lookout. Really nice spot as well, but the weather got worst and worst with every passing minute.
But that's ok, from here it was only a short drive to the campground where I will spend the night.
Hopefully, the weather forecast is right for tomorrow, that after tonight's rain it will get quite ok around early lunchtime and the afternoon so I can explore the glaciers as planned 🤞🏼

At 6.30 pm I arrived at the campground, pretty exhausted and tired from a long day.
A quick shower and some dinner, for more I didn't feel tonight. Q

  • Driving away from bad weather

    27 de enero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

It started to rain around 0 o’clock at night.
It was still raining at 8 am and not just a little bit. And unfortunately also into my car 😱😱
Oh my god, I noticed a little bit of water coming in already a few weeks ago but now it’s not a little bit anymore, it’s a lot 😱😬
And for now no end of the rain in sight 😅

Luckily there is like a carport in front of one of the cabins at the campground so I moved my car under the roof to skip some rain for the next 2 hours at least.
Yesterday’s weather forecast showed rain until 10-11 am and then the same like yesterday throughout today. But now the weather forecast is saying rain, a lot of rain for the whole day 😳
And the worst is, that the clouds are hanging so low so you can barely see something at all.

Well, I had breakfast and was then asking the owners of the campground if there is a mechanic in Fox Glacier. Luckily it is so I was driving there and was telling him, what my problem is but he was alone today and had more than enough to do already.
I was spending 30 min thinking about what I gonna do now, staying here or in Franz Josef and hope for better weather later in the afternoon and tomorrow or keep on going towards Hokitika.

I was ending up stopping at every mechanic on the way towards Hokitika but no one even had time to look at it... 😳
    And it was still raining...
I arrived in Hokitika at around 2.30 pm, actually by sunshine!! Shortly before Hokitika, it stopped raining and the sun came out!
And here I finally found a mechanic that could take a look at my car.
But he said this can be a huge effort to find out what’s wrong and expensive as well. He asked for how long I will stay and as it’s only 2 1-2 weeks left he recommended not to dig into the problem. He but some ducktape over the areas that are a problem and said, I should buy one on my own and keep on doing this until it’s time to give the car back and never mention the problem 🙈

Good is also, that I am traveling north towards good weather.
So after a quick stop to fuel up and buy something to eat I kept on driving north for some hours and was, in the end, deciding to stay in Murchison overnight.

I have been traveling this part of the Westcoast already last time I was here so I am not missing anything here.
I only missed the glaciers and Lake Matheson now, but I will anyway need to come back again 😉😊

In Murchison, the weather was really nice and warm. I arrived at 6.30 pm at the campground, quite tired after a long day on the road. So I wanted to get to bed early but was ending up talking to a family from Spain for some hours in the evening.

  • Lake Rotoroa

    28 de enero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

After a nice breakfast with some bloody Sandflys, I left the campground shortly past 10 am and started to drive to Picton.

My first stop was Lake Rotoroa, one of the lakes in the Nelson Lakes National Park.

I passed here last time I was here but never stopped so now it was definitely time for that!
I took a short walk through the forest closed to the lake that was really nice, but the Sandflys here are really nasty so I didn’t stay so long.

  • Lake Rotoiti

    28 de enero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Just a short drive from Lake Rotoroa is Lake Rotoiti.
Here I stayed longer as the Sandflys are not so bad here and after a one hour walk beside the lake I had my lunch break here as well. Had to be on my watch all the time as some ducks got really interested in my sandwich 🙈😂

Then I was driving the last 1 1/2 hours to Picton where I arrived in the afternoon.
It was nice to have the rest of the afternoon free and not drive until the evening again today.
The weather is still really good, but it got a little bit cloudy during the evening.

  • Karaka Point

    29 de enero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

This morning I woke up to a lot of clouds but it’s still pretty warm.
I had a good breakfast and had then some hours left until I had to check in to the ferry to Wellington. So I went for a little drive around the area and was ending up at Karaka Point for a short walk.

After that, I stopped at the marina as well to take a look at all the boats and then I went to fuel up my car, it’s really cheap here!!! The cheapest fuel I found so far!

And then I found a little truck that was selling ice cream and frozen yogurts and I was ending up with a really good frozen yogurt before I had to go to the ferry terminal.
I checked in at 1 pm and had to wait until 1.40 pm to drive onto the ferry.
We actually left at 2 pm instead of 2.15 as we were already done so early with loading up!
It’s also not so full as it was on last time, so that’s really nice!

I got a nice place to sit at and as it was still so cloudy I was deciding that it’s not worth it to go outside and take pictures. At least it’s not blowing ad the sea conditions are really good!

It took 3 1/2 hours to reach Wellington and I was one of the last cars to leave the ferry.
I had around 1 1/2 hours of driving left informs of me, as I decided to stay in Carterton overnight, highly recommended from Lena 😉, on my way to the East coast!
I also got a new friend, according to some people here on the campground I got a new friend for my life 😉

  • Pekapeka Wetlands

    30 de enero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

I woke up from the rain dropping on my car 😬

But I must say, the tape is definitely helping and I could not see any water coming in 💪🏼
Ok, it was not raining soo much but I am happy anyway.
The weather forecast ist not to bad either, it should stop around early lunchtime.

So I had a good breakfast, of coarse my new friend the cat was around again 😉🥰
Cut little one and so in love with everyone that spends some time with her.

I then drove into the town to buy some more tape, better I have some around when I need it!
I also need my shopping and then left Carterton to drive to Hastings.

As it was still raining I didn’t stop in the beginning.
And so I was actually already almost in Hastings when I stopped for the first time.
The Pekapeka Wetlands was a nice little stop beside the roads.
I took a short walk here and then went actually straight to Te Awanga where I will spend the night.
It got pretty hot during the day and it’s over 30 degrees now, so I was just not feeling for more adventures.
I found an old but nice little campground here and as the owner could not change my 50$ note I got it even cheaper than the normal price.
So I paid 10$ instead of 15$. Sometimes you need to be lucky 😉

I got a spot right beside the beach and spend the rest of the day planning the next days.
Here are living a lot of cats and dogs so I got a lot of animals around me to pet what I really enjoyed!
I miss Snoopy really much and I am happy when I can borrow some other dogs for a little while.

When I came back from dinner I saw this amazing sunset over the ocean, so I just left my stuff in the car and went to the beach.

  • Te Mata Peak

    31 de enero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

I woke up early enough to check out the sunrise but it wasn’t as good as the sunset yesterday.
I tried to sleep a bit more but around 7 am it started to blow and it got quick to a storm.
So I got up around 8 in the end to get some breakfast. It just got worst and worst and I was wondering if I would be able to do anything today.

Luckily I don’t need to check out at 10 am here, I can stay as long as I want. So I decided to wait a little bit and see what’s going to happen as the weather forecast said it should get better around early lunchtime, but blowing throughout the whole day.

Around 11 am it was getting much better and I decided it’s time to leave now.

I went to Cape Kidnappers as I wanted to the cliffs up closed. But unfortunately, the track is closed at the moment because the cliff is not stabil. 😕

So the first real stop for today is at Te Mata Peak.

Nice to be able to drive up to the top when it’s so hot 🙈
Yes today I am a little bit lazy.
But it’s getting really hot now, supposed to be 35 degrees today!! 🥵
The wind makes it easier to handle I can say.

The view from the top was awesome, the wind horrible. 🙈😂
So I didn’t stay too long up here and went back down.

  • Waimarama Beach and Maraetotara Falls

    31 de enero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

The next stop for today was at Waimarama Beach. Beautiful beach with a nice island in front of it!

I was thinking back and forward here, if I should go for a swim or not, but was deciding against it in the end as it's quite a rough sea with the wind and knew I can go and swim and a waterfall soon.
It also was a bit colder here at the beach, which was really nice!

So I didn't stay so long, had a quick lunch and then went to the Maraetotara Falls. It was just around 25 minutes to drive from the beach there.
It was a big problem to find a place to park the car. So many cars here already and such a small carpark. But I found a space where I could squeeze into.
It was a 10 minutes walk down to the river and the waterfall. And this one is definitely well known!
Many people here, a lot of families but also many dogs 🥰
I got a new friend, a black Labrador that was very happy and came to say hello a few times.

Well, I then went for a swim. Opps the water was muuuuch colder than expected 😱

I was not the only one that got shocked. 🙈😬
But I really wanted to cool down and go for a swim, I wanted it so desperately that I went in!!
It took me a while but I went in for a fast swim and ten I got out again!
It was cold but anyway really nice.

I was sitting down in the shade for a while to get dry, talked with a family, the owners of my new dog friend until it was time to get going again.

I then went to my next campground. It a little bit outside of Napier in a nice and quiet place 😊
It was so hot during the evening and never really cooled down. The wind stopped during the evening and had really hard to fall asleep, as it was so hot, so in the end, I had the windows all open and the truck as well 🙈😂
So I managed to fall asleep at least.

It was already or maybe I most say still pretty warm in the morning. I had my breakfast in the shadow as sitting outside in the sun is impossible!

I left around 10 am and was just hoping that the weather forecast for today is right and it's not getting hotter than 30 degrees 🤞🏼😅

The first stop for me on the way to Gisborne was at the Tongoio Walkway.

Here are two waterfalls within a few minutes of walking. The first one was very easy to reach and a famous swimming spot.

For the second one, I need to climb up a quite steep path for around 15-20 minutes to come to the lookout. A couple recommended walking to the redwood forest, only 30 minutes from the lookout so I did that. It was a really nice walk and the forest was beautiful. A lot of big and old trees and so many birds and also goats around!
Yes, goats! I was also surprised when there was suddenly a goat standing in front of me 😂😉

They are super scared and I was just seeing them max for one second until they were gone again in the bushes.

It started to get really warm now so I went back to the car to keep on going.

There I met another couple, from Rotorua and they have me some nice tips, where to go and what to do around here!

  • Road to Gisborne and Te Reinga Falls

    1 de febrero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

The road is a really scenic drive!
Unfortunately not so many possibilities to stop and take a picture as the landscape is so beautiful everywhere.

But I managed to stop a few times at least!

The last waterfall for today was the Y
Te Reinga Falls, just a short walk away from the road!
Super cool waterfalls but hard to get a nice view of them as you would need to climb over a fence to get a better view and picture, what I did. 🙊😅

No one was there, no one saw it! And it was worth it!

After that, I went straight to Gisborne as it already was quite late.
The first campground I passed looked already from the main road like a real hippie camp, and I was just not feeling for that today! 🙈😬

The next one was unfortunately already closed so I had only one left, the expensive one...
    Or the hippie camp.
No, no hippies today so I went to the top 10 campground right beside the beach! That's nice.

The rest of the evening was calm with a way to hot shower... 🥵
The temperature is fixed here and 42 degrees is way to hot for a shower when it's over 30 degrees outside!!!

This drive took a bit longer than expected and also the walk was longer than expected. It was standing it's a 2 hours return trip, but I heard from people it should only be 20 min one way.

Do be prepared for all, I had a little bit of lunch. Not so easy to eat something when it is so warm. Then I filled up my water bottle and packed down some crackers, just in case.

In the end, it took me 30 minutes to the waterfall and 25 minutes back. So pretty easy track, so steeper parts but nothing serious.

The waterfall is so stunning! It's called the most beautiful waterfall in Hawkes Bay!

  • Waikanae Beach Gisborne

    2 de febrero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

If I thought it was hot the last couple of days, I was wrong!! Today was hot! Really hot! Impossible to be outside in the sun or to move too much.
So I was ending up on the beach, under some big trees for the whole day! 37 degrees today 😎🥵
I don't know, how many times I went for a swim in the ocean. It was often, as I really needed to cool down a bit all the time.
Around 3 pm I got a nice big ice cream. Bigger than expected 🙈😂
If I knew before how big their scopes are I would be more than happy with it one scope, but I got 2!
And luckily also an empty paper cup, because half of my ice cream was breaking off after only 2 minutes but I was luckily catching it with the cup!

I didn't even have a chance to take a picture from my enormous ice cream😂
It was really good ice cream as well so I really enjoyed it, but I had to eat it fast, it was just melting away.

After that, I went back to the beach for the rest of the afternoon!
I even managed to not get sunburned 🥳😉

During the day I tried to find someone who is given surf lessons today, but 2 out of 4 surf schools are not operating at the moment, one could never reach and the last one has lessons today but they are already full. So I could only watch them today.
So many people were out and surfing today.

But I gonna do it tomorrow instead. As they had no bookings at all, the owner of the surf school was offering me a private lesson, normally it costs 95$, for 75$ instead!
That was very kind and I am already very excited and looking forward to my surf lesson tomorrow 🤗😎🏄🏻‍♀️

In the evening I fixed my wash and had a horrible hot shower again.

Dinner was very late today as it was just to hot to eat something earlier.
At least here is a nice sea breeze and it's cooling down during the evening and night! So falling asleep was not a problem at all!

  • Surfing with Sarah

    3 de febrero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Lovely fresh morning today! So nice temperature!
I got up at 8 am to have the time for a nice and calm breakfast before it was time to leave for my surf lesson.
The meeting point is just a street away so I didn’t need to drive somewhere far away.
9.30 am I was supposed to meet my coach Nico at Roberts Road Carpark.
I was there a little bit too early but he was right on time!

The first thing to do was to sign a paper and pay and then I went back to the house to pick up a wetsuit and a board for me.
I got changed and then we went to the beach.

He explained to me, what I gonna need to do to get up on the board and how to stand on it right.
We made some test runs on the beach but after only a few minutes he said, ok that’s enough let’s go into the water, you gonna learn it better there!

That was the start of 2 hours of intense training!
I was actually standing up already on my second wave!
    That was amazing!!

I don’t know how many times I failed and went for a swim, it was a lot but I also was standing up many times and got a nice ride to the beach.
The waves today are really good, according to Nico!
Clear waves and if waves! Not the best condition for a beginner normally but he was helping me a lot so I felt confident all the time!
He knew which waves to take and which waves better not to take.
He put me up on a lot of unbroken waves as well, what was pretty cool!
Some of the waves were around 1,20m, most of them around 1m what is really much!

After two amazing hours, a super clean nose and way too much salt water in my stomach it was sadly time to finish my lesson. But I finished with a perfect ride on a perfect wave all the way down to the beach 🤗🏄🏻‍♀️

That was definitely not my last time on a surfboard! Good that I go to Australia next, where I can keep on practicing!!

After the lesson, we went back to the carpark. I took a shower there to get the saltwater of my skin and then it was time to leave hot Gissy and travel north!

Oh yeah, it’s really hot today, again. 🥵
I didn’t realize it on the water but it’s hot! Around 35 degrees I heard later!

I drove for around one and a half hours until I got quite hungry and stopped beside a river for a Picknick in the shadow!

This walk was a little bit steeper than I was expecting it to be and in the heat, it was getting really tough to walk up the hill.
So I was actually deciding that I am not going to to the whole walk once I was up on the first hill.

The view from here was amazing and an enjoyed it for a couple of minutes until I walked back to my car.
I found some blackberries on the way back that I totally missed on the way up. It's just a little bit to early jet to eat them.

Back in my car, I decided it's enough for today and wanted to go straight to my next campground in Whakatane.
It's just a 35 min drive from here.
As so often here, I anyway don't go a straightway t my destination as I always find something more to stop at.
Here it was Nukuhou Saltmarsh, last two pictures!
Luckily it was only a short walk to the two lookout points!

Of my god, this was sooo good!! 😋 I can eat ice cream for lunch every day 😉

Next, I went to the Te Rerekawau Falls.

Definitely fresh again and ready to get going again.
But first I had a good breakfast and then I left the campground.

I stopped at Avocado Place. It’s a place where you can buy fruits and vegetables!
They had some much stuff and so cheap so it was hard to decide what I want to buy!
I got some peppers, plums, and cucumbers! 😊

After that, I went to Waihi Beach. I have been here before but I like the place and it was just a short drive here so I wanted to spend some time at the beach here and watch the surfers and try to learn something from them!

After around 1 hour or maybe more, I drove to Owharoa Falls.
That’s definitely a busy spot here! So many families around.
That’s when I remember that it is Waitangi Day today! So many people are free from work and out with their family enjoying the good weather.

So I actually called the campground where I want to stay tonight if they still have some free places just to be sure, but it’s no problem at all!

As there was not so much more to see or do around I checked in early at the campground.

I had some lunch and then a nap from around 2 hours. I obviously really needed that!

  • Wof

    8 de febrero de 2020, Nueva Zelanda ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Having a neighbor at the campground in a tent has never been a problem for me, last night it was. I don't know what he did, but he was obviously moving around so much and making so many noises that even I woke up from it and had hard to fall asleep again...
So I was quite tired this morning. I had to get up in a good time as I need to be in Takanini at 11 am to meet with Steve, who wants to take a look at the car and I have to fix a new warrant of fitness, short Wof as well.

So after breakfast, I packed up my stuff and left the campground at 9.30 am.

Halfway to Auckland, I stopped at a picnic area as I was reminding that I haven't removed the duck tape jet, so I did that fast and then realized that I somehow need to get the glue away that was still stuck on the car. That was not easy at all and took quite some time, luckily I left so early!
I managed to get away the most of it!
And Steven didn't see the rest, or he at least was not saying anything about it. 😅

I arrived at 11 am at the VTNZ branch in Takanini and Steve came a few minutes later.
He took a look around the car and was pleased with what he saw. He explained to me, what I need to do to get the car checked and how we keep on going after this.

So I went to the waiting line, parked my car there, left the keys inside and went to the reception to sign in and pay.
It costs only 67$ here, so that is not much money!
I had to wait for like 45 minutes until I got called for a mechanic.
    My car failed 😳

I got the paper with the list of problems and 28 days to fix it!

So I went to a small parking area and called Steve to tell him this.
He then called his garage, and I could go there immediately.
They took a look at the paper and said, they can fix it. It's two new lamps in front and a howl in the muffler. I had to leave the car with them for an hour.
I was surprised how cheap it was. Only 120$, that's like 80€.

So after that, I went to the VTNZ Branche just across the road.
And I failed again, damn it...
It was still a problem with one light.
So back to the garage again, but now they had their lunch break. So they asked if I could come back at 3 pm again. No problem, I also needed some lunch, good that McDonald's was just a kilometer away 😉

Getting back to the garage one of the mechanics saw me driving in, he was like why are you back? Ad I gave him the paper and he was like, oh ok but why did they not fix it? It's just the focus that is not right, they could have done it by themselves.

Well, they didn't, so I drove in and they fixed it, for free!
Well do be honest, they should have checked this when they were putting it in in the first place.
Luckily the recheck is not coasting anything! It doesn't matter how many times you are going back. So I went one more time to the VTNZ and this time my car passed!!! 🥳🥳 Jippi!
    Finally!
It's just 4 pm now, so the whole thing took 5 hours.

Now I will probably end up in a big traffic jam leaving Auckland 😬

I found a cheap campground only 60 km north of here, where I want to stay for some days.
The traffic wasn't as bad as expected! It took me not even one hour there!

The campground might be old, but it's a super nice, quiet and peaceful place!
Super friendly and helpful owners and just what I need for the rest couple of days I have in front of me!

Steve wants me to go to two car fairs this weekend to try to sell the car there, but I can't do that. It's not feeling right to sell the car to other travelers with the water leak... And if I say it, I would either not be able to sell it or for super less many. And if I don't say it, I maybe get 500$ more than from Steve... Maybe... I don't even think so.
So I decided to not go, but not gonna tell him that.

I will give the car a nice clean in the next days from inside and outside and that's all!
He can deal with it then!
    It feels good like this!
