      Antiguas Hauptstadt Saint John`s

      Wir wollen auf Antigua uns natürlich auch die Hauptstadt anschauen. Hierfür segeln wir in die Bucht von Saint John's. Wir ankern allein neben den Anlegern für die großen Kreuzfahrtschiffe und treffen auf einen Delphin der an uns vorbei schwimmt. Hier am Hafen wurde extra eine kleine Shoppingmeile im Kolonialstil, mit dem Namen Heritage Quay, für die Kreuzfahrtgäste aufgebaut. Das macht erstmal ganz schön was her, wirkt aber etwas unecht. Nachdem wir die 300 m der Shoppingmeile abgelaufen sind, kommen wir in die eigentliche Hauptstadt. Hiervon sind wir ganz schön enttäuscht. Es gibt hier viele heruntergekommene Häuser, kleine Straßen mit kaputten Bürgersteigen und popelige Geschäften. Wir bewegen uns in die Richtung der von weitem sichtbaren Kirche bzw. Kathedrale. Als wir ankommen sind, sind wir abermals enttäuscht. Das Grundstück ist verschlossen und das Gotteshaus in einem maroden Zustand. Wir besuchen ein einfaches örtliches Restaurant und bestellen Bokits. Das ist so eine Art karibischer Döner. Eine Teigtasche mit Kartoffeln, Currysauce und Fleisch oder Fisch. Das ist sehr lecker! Anschließend schlendern wir noch etwas durch die recht belebten heruntergekommenen Straßen und kehren durch durch den schönen Heritage Quay zurück zur Enjoy.Baca selengkapnya

      Antigua

      Had a bit of a shock this morning when I rose out of bed, threw back the curtains and found the Queen Victoria parked right next to us. She does not look good. She needs urgently painting and there are clearly no passengers on board. A lot of furniture is piled up on the balconies. So why is she in Antigua? It probably confirms the rumour spread in Barbados that she is being used for another purpose, possibly as a hospital ship.

      Antigua had no Covid restrictions for our visit other than a temperature test and the need to wear masks everywhere.

      Very warm here but a bit drizzly but the forecast is better for later. Currently sitting in a bar drinking iced coffee with Jean, who dances with us on board. Already visited the local church, which badly needs repair and walked around the town of St John but not particularly interesting.

      A lot of speculation taking place as to how many passengers are currently in isolation suffering from Covid. We know that people who have danced on board are in isolation with the virus but the interesting thing is that yesterday, trying to access the rear of the ship we came across one of the security doors that secures the isolation areas at the rear but which a crew member had left open briefly and there were trays, which would have held meals, lying empty on the floor indicating that there were several people in isolation along that particular corridor. We are still testing ourselves twice a week with an antigen test and we continue to be negative.

      You can quickly start to see the changes and improvements after the hurricane. The bridge that was destroyed last time we were here was rebuilt. So passengers can easily get to the bar/café that we ate at last time.

      This time however I decided to give one of the beaches a try. Our assistant manager Caroline and I got a taxi and tried a new beach. Our taxi driver was hilarious, he said his name is Stress and his taxi service is called Stress-Free. There was also so much loyalty between the taxi drivers. They all say the exact same prices and don’t steal fairs from each other. We had arranged for Stress to pick us up when we were done at the beach and right before another driver backed into his taxi and scrapped up the back a little bit. When he were standing waiting for him we were surrounded by taxi drivers but none of them tried to get us to just go with them instead. Very different from back home.

      The beach was one Stress recommended based on how much time we had. It didn’t have tons of stuff around it except a Sandals resort which was about to re-open. So there was hardly anyone on the beach. Swimming in the water was weird. Is was the typical warm Caribbean water but it was full of fish. The water wasn’t clear enough to see them but whenever your feet stopped moving they swarmed your feet nibbling at them. It didn’t hurt it just felt like many little pokes all over your feet. I almost stepped on fish a few times. Caroline had googles with her so see would go down and look at my feet trying to see them. She caught glimpses of them a few times. Saying they were tiny little fish with a few bigger ones. It was a very odd feeling on your feet. I’m sure we have nice clean feet now though.

      After the beach we stopped for some wifi and ice cream before rushing back to the ship for showers before work.      Baca selengkapnya

      St John's Antigua

      After sailing through some pretty stormy seas after leaving La Coruna, by the time we sailed just south of the Azores, the weather had improved significantly and we were able to wander around the ship and attempt to find our sea legs. We arrived in Antigua to clear and sunny weather and a temperature of 25 degrees, expected to rise to 29 degrees. We found a taxi and headed off to Dickenson Bay and spent a good few hours swimming and just relaxing. We thought we would never get here. The taxi ride cost US$24 return and well worth it.Baca selengkapnya

      Another lovely day on another lovely island paradise. Our pack of hounds continues on its trek through the Caribbean. The Antigua H3 was very gracious in hosting us for a 7 km hash run through St Johns’ for a cultural tour of the capital city.

      We stopped at a few of the famous places like St Johns’ Church, the Antigua Recreation Ground (cricket pitch), public library, the hospital, an old drainage ditch, the fish market, and the meat market . . . with the on in back down to the port where over 100 beers were cooling off, ready for mass consumption.       We’re docked with 2 other large cruise ships today (adventure of the seas and celebrity summit). I had to do Gangway in the morning but now I’m off with another photog Marie. After walking around for a while we went to a café called Waterview Café and bar for some lunch and wifi. Both were disappointing. It was a nice view though. The café is normally just over a bridge from the ship but instead you have to go around the back. The bridge is still there but it’s destroyed. There was also lots of little fishing boats just off shore that were half under water. This is another port where you can still see some of the affects of the hurricane.
      We both however did still really need wifi so we are now having some ice cream for dessert. This time both the ice cream and the wifi are good.
      This is definitely not my favourite Caribbean port but it’s nice. You don’t need to walk far from the ship for anything.
      On the gangway this morning was a steel drum band. They had all the passengers dancing. Some pictures of them will be posted later.      Baca selengkapnya

      Antigua {St. John‘s}

      Antigua und Barbuda, zwei Inseln, ein Staat, mit der Währung EC$ (Ostkaribischer Dollar), die auf vielen westindischen Inseln Anwendung findet, neben US $ und auch €.
      Früher britisch, seit 1981 unabhängig, gehört aber zum Commonwealth.
      Vom Schiff aus gesehen war Antigua bisher die einladendste Insel.
      Keine Vorbereitungen für Unternehmungen an Land getroffen. Direkt am Steg buhlen Taxifahrer um die Gunst der Kunden. Es geht das Gerücht um, das sie die weiter entfernten Strände als schöner empfehlen um mehr Umsatz zu machen. Eine nette Dame von der Touristinformation hat uns dann eine Inselrundfahrt für 30$ pP empfohlen mit Strandaufenthalt. Mit einigen Mitreisenden haben wir uns dann einen Minibus geteilt.
      Fazit: eine gute Idee, wir haben viel gesehen, sind an vielen Kirchen vorbei gefahren (ich hätte gerne mal eine Lobpreis-Steel-Band gehört), haben Falmouth Harbor besucht und die Befestigungsanlagen der Engländer, die sich mit Kanonen gegen die einsegelnden Franzosen verteidigt haben.
      Dann ging es weiter über die Insel zum karibischen Traumstrand: Jelly Harbor. Nach 2 Stunden relaxen und schwimmen ging es mit dem Minibus wieder zurück zum Schiff.      Baca selengkapnya

      I deportati ad Antigua

      Cristoforo Colombo avvistò le isole di Antigua e Barbuda nel 1493 durante il suo secondo viaggio dando a quella più grande il nome di Santa Maria de la Antigua. L'Inghilterra riuscì a colonizzare le isole nel 1632, con Thomas Warner come primo governatore. Successivamente l'isola fu oggetto di una densa deportazione di galeotti, che trovarono il modo di scampare alle prigioni inglesi per coltivare tabacco, indaco, zenzero e canna da zucchero.
      Nel 2021, a seguito della pandemia diffusa in tutto il mondo, una nuova deportazione ebbe luogo ad Antigua. Protagonisti della deportazione furono i pensionati italiani, che furono tenuti sotto stretta sorveglianza all'interno delle navi sulle quali erano stati trasportati. Il 21 dicembre 2021, nel porto di Saint Johns si potevano contare ben 4 navi, delle quali ben 3 piene di deportati italiani in regime di semilibertà. Le navi furono attraccate una di fianco all'altra, così che i deportati, messi al corrente del loro comune destino, non muovessero una sollevazione popolare. In serata, poi, fu organizzata una cena di gala, nella quale, alla presenza del comandante, fu somministrato una cena di lusso tale da sedare gli animi      Baca selengkapnya
