      Off to Chile - Paso Cristo Redentor

      We had an early morning start for the 3 hour drive to the border in order to beat the crowds and lengthy lines for immigration and customs clearance. As is the case for most border crossings between Argentina and Chile, they are at the top of a pass in the middle of the Andes. This is the main pass between the two countries, normally open 24 hours, and called Paso Cristo Redentor. At over 3,300m, it provided us with a good South American lesson - drizzle at 1,000m (Mendoza), is snow at 3,300m, even this early in the season. We were turned around at a road block 50km short of the border and waited for 2 days for the pass to be cleared. Second lesson - Argentina and Chile do have web sites that provide the status of border crossings. They’re just very hard to find, and they don’t get updated very often. We now know how to navigate them! When we were finally allowed to cross, a lot of the snow had disappeared, but we still experienced snow flurries and the temps were close to zero. More importantly, the scenery up to the pass was stunning and we got to see an armadillo.Read more

      Fine Dining

      Irgendwie komisch ohne dem MAN. Wir spazieren durch die Stadt und finden wieder die vielen Graffitis. Ich finde Mendoza ist eine schöne grüne Stadt. Hier kann ich mich schon wohl fühlen, wenn auch der Anlass nervt 😠.

      Abends gönnen wir uns dann ein Fine-Dining-Dinner. Seit kurzer Zeit werden in Südamerika auch Michelin Sterne vergeben. Das Restaurant auf dem Weingut Bodega Aleanna hat einen Stern ⭐️.
      Zuerst besichtigen wir die Bodega in Eigeninitiative, dann mit einem englischsprachigen Guide. Wir erfahren viel über den Weinanbau in der Wüstenlandschaft.
      Das Essen macht dann richtig Spaß. Den Michelin Stern ⭐️ muss man wohl ins Verhältnis Südamerika setzen. In Europa wäre noch viel Luft nach Oben. Bei einem 10-Gänge-Menü mit Weinbegleitung - auch 10 Weine - für umgerechnet 135,00 €, können wir nicht meckern. Zusätzlich können wir einen Wein aus Uspallata probieren, von einem der höchstgelegenen Weinregionen der Welt. Die Weinbegleitung wird dann noch mit einem ihrer beiden Top-Weine abgerundet, der mit 100 Parker Punkten bewertet ist.
      Es war tatsächlich viel Wein 🍷 ….

      Der doofe Uber-Fahrer versetzt uns dann bei der Abholung. Kein Problem, das Restaurant organisiert kurzfristig eine Limo 🚘, die uns zum Uber-Preis nach Mendoza (40 KM) zurückbringt.

      Salute desde Mendoza 🍷🏔️🌸

      Hallo ihr Lieben,
      Nachdem wir die Ostertage in Puerto Madryn verbracht haben, melden wir uns aus der Weinregion Mendoza, ca. 1000km weiter nördlich zurück. Hier wird es auch langsam wieder wärmer und die Parks der Stadt werden von vielen großen, alten Bäumen und Palmen geschmückt. Mit dem Fahrrad haben wir einige Weingüter besucht und genossen die verschiedenen Geschmäcker. Gerne hätten wir die ein oder andere Flasche mitgenommen, was jedoch die Kapazität unseres Rucksacks nicht zuließ… auch das Fass konnte Anne leider nicht einpacken.
      Einen Tagesausflug haben wir in den bergigen Ort „Uspallata“ gemacht, wo wir die Stille und Natur genießen konnten 🏔️. Zwei der Riesen sahen aus wie schlafende Dinosaurier und der Cerro Siete Colores hat uns mit seinen bunten Farben überrascht. Außerdem haben hier schon die Inka in ferner Vergangenheit Bildchen gemalt. Ansonsten war es recht trocken aber sehr schön. Am nächsten Tag gab es dann wieder eine Weintour mit dem Fahrrad und dieses Mal hat das Wetter dann auch mitgespielt. Wir reisen nun weiter nach Cordoba. Ciao y hasta pronto!      Read more

      Cacheuta Thermal Spa

      Today we spent a day relaxing in the far out thermal waters of the Andes mountains, within one of valleys were different levels of Thermal pools, from cold to hot and with a lazy river on the bottom tier. We had to catch a bus here from the centre of Mendoza which took around an hour. We missed the first bus so had some waiting to do, so grabbed 2nd breakfast at a market cafe around the corner... It goes without saying cake was on the menu and we had it... Yes dulce de leche as always! (might have to go on a diet soon with all this cake).
      After we spent the day lazying around at the pools, we grabbed abit of something to eat at a BBQ place near the spa. As the guy assumed we spoke Spanish after zach asked briefly in Spanish about the menu offers, we had apparently ordered food and drinks! We weren't quite sure what we'd get though... 😂🤔🙄😳 But turns out we ordered fried eggs with chips, some spreadable cheese and topped with chopped warmed hotdogs! 😂 Ermmm yes healthy, they love all the beige foods here!       Mendoza ist eines der grössten Weinanbaugebiete Argentiniens. Nach einer kleinen Stadtbesichtigung fahren wir in ein Weingut, dass
      !!! 9Millionen!!! Liter Wein jährlich produziert. Bei Ruedi waren es 25tausend.
      Auch hier wieder Essen & Wein aufeinander abgestimmt, sehr fein. Es war unser vorgezogenes Weihnachtsessen. Morgen fahren wir 520 km weiter, da bleibt keine Zeit für das Weihnachtsessen. Aber wir feiern noch! Am 25.12.      Read more

      Horse Riding at Sunset & BBQ at Ranch

      Today we had a walk around Mendoza centre, it's a big place! We stuck to a small route that took us past alot of Plazas where people where chilling with picnics, mate and wine 🍷 (mate as in the tea drink) but also with their mates 👍 We stopped off for lunch with buskers playing, while we people watched for a few hours. Around tea time we headed off to the ranch with Franco (our tour guide and also part time DJ) the ranch was based in Luján de Cuyo on one of the many vineyards, part owned by Francos company where they also kept the horses. We got partnered up with the horses, me with 'Salchicha' (meaning Sausage in English, he was a fast horse but seemed to have a angry grudge against Franco or his horse 😂 his ears went down everytime they approached and wasn't happy them passing us! No idea why! 😳 😂). Zach was partned with 'Rostillo' he was a slow horse for sure, and only sped up when he saw Franco looking at him haha, but he was the most experienced horse of the bunch 😂 After a short lesson we headed off to the hills overlooking the Andes mountains, Franco leading us. I was a beautiful trek that took an hour to the top, over rocky landscape, with cacti 🌵 everywhere! We reached the top just before sunset to watch the sun disappear behind the Andes, then we headed back down for a well deserved late night BBQ with alot of meat (best steak ever, I'm not a steak person but it was amazing 😋) wine and fruits for after. We even got a view of the last full moon of the year. After some good socialising, getting to know our small group we headed back to out hostel around 11.30. Best trip here so far!Read more

      Bodega Cecchin

      Das Weingut, das wir eigentlich besuchen wollten, hatte geschlossen. Zum Glück haben sie uns Bodega Cecchin empfohlen. Eine der wenigen biologischen Weingüter in und um Mendoza.

      Sie bemühen sich sehr um die Natur, nutzen wenig Sulfate und keine Pestizide (stattdessen werden eher Marienkäfer eingesetzt). Ebenso pflanzen sie in ihre Weinberge Obstbäume, die einer Vogelart als Snack dient, damit sie nicht an die Trauben gehen. Andere Weingüter gehen deutlich rabiater mit den Vögeln um.

      Sweet Sunday Wine Tasting Mendoza

      Rented a bike and visited two Bodegas. After the first wine and 6 glasses the cycling became a challenge. The second was a luch and another 4 glasses. Have to say that the white wine (Torrontes) with a specific grape from Argentina was spectacular.Read more

      Wir sind für eine Nacht in potreullios geblieben. Hier ist es sehr verschlafen aber es gibt einen wunderschönen See! Und wir haben einen Ausritt auf Pferden gemacht. Leider ist Luke zwischendurch die Hülle von seinem Fotoapparat runtergefallen und ich wollte sie totesmztig retten. Leider habe ich dabei mein Pferd losgelassen, welche die Chance gewittert hat und einfach weggalloppiert ist 😂😂😂 unser Gaucho musste es dann in einer wilden jagt wieder einfangen, die bestimmt 30 Minuten gedauert hat. Mein Pferd war danach komplett durchgeschwitzt und ist den restlichen Ausflug nur noch hinter den anderen hergeschlichen 😂😂😂😂😂Read more

      Day 19, More of Mendoza

      Mendoza was a surprise! I spent the day on a walking tour (Mark was taking a rest) and had not expected a city in the heart of a desert to be so green and leafy. Almost totally destroyed by an earthquake in 1861, it was rebuilt by a French-trained architect and has large squares, wide streets, and broad sidewalks. Lots of smaller parks also. Least ‘Spanish colonial’ city in Argentina. Very clean/no graffiti. Also one of the ‘11 great wine capitals’ of the world (and why we are here😎). My guide, Ignacio (Nacho) was a very enterprising young guy who decided at age nine to teach himself English and was fluent enough a couple of years later to win a scholarship to space camp in Huntsville. He is finishing up university while building a thriving tour business. Very impressive. We are staying in a little suburban town, Las Heras, with cute shops and restaurants (and wine stores🍷) and an outdoor market filled with jewelry and pottery. Hard to figure out the crazy economy with so many lovely consumer goods. But anyone with USDs is in luck.Read more
