      Feeding fish, stroking sharks

      We booked to go to Fraser Island on Monday, today is Sunday.

      We have a packed day of entertainment lined up. Live music and one market, then another market and then, this evening, more live music in a local theatre.

      Unfortunately the wind has become stronger than yesterday with the result that the powerboat racing has been cancelled, or was that because the two favourited crashed yesterday and one boat burnt to the water level? The markets have been cancelled because the stall holders’ insurance doesn’t cover winds of this strength. The live music this evening ... well, despite being advertised as “every Sunday”, it hasn’t been on for months; someone who does the campsite information sheets is just reproducing them without checking what’s on.

      What to do? Decided to go to the aquarium, good reviews and they use real sea water and natural light. Ayer that we will drop into a bar that does live music.

      The aquarium was great. Very small and only half a dozen tanks around the central large tank. At 2:30 the public can help feed the fish. The fish are enthusiastic and the public lose the odd finger and get wet, but a good time is had by everyone, Then we all went outside to feed the turtles and the sharks. Once they’ve been fed, you can stroke them. For the sharks we were advised not to stroke them until their teeth had gone past.

      The live music bar was lovely, but we were two of only four people in it. When the other couple left we felt duty bound to stay so that we didn’t leave the lone keyboard player/singer on his own. In the end we plucked up courage and left, leaving him to sing to an empty bar. So sad 🙁

      We hadn’t had an ice cream for a few days and came across a kiosk that sold proper ice creams. We were served up two humongous ice creams. Bun sensibly asked for hers in a pot, I had mine in a cone. By the time we’d taken a photo of the two impressive offerings, mine was dripping everywhere. I had to go back to the kiosk and ask for a tub to pour my now, almost, liquid ice cream into. They were so ridiculously large that we didn’t eat anything else that afternoon or evening. We went back to Bertha and packed to go to Fraser Island on Monday morning.      Read more

      Un peu de calme à Hervey Bay

      Nous avons conclu le workaway avec une session de 10h de bus, de jour pour une fois, et sous la pluie pour changer !🌦️
      PS: Finalement de nuit c'est mieux...

      Nous voilà donc à Hervey Bay, après 45min de marche pour rejoindre notre hostel. Bien décidé à se reposer un peu, nous avons choisi une petite auberge sympa, beaucoup moins bruyante que celles que nous avions faite auparavant !😴😴

      Au programme : Repos, piscine, soleil, balade jusqu'au pier, Fraser Island, et organisation de la suite du voyage !

      Comme un peu partout en Australie, les restaurants & bar ferment très tôt. Mais même en étant au courant, on a quand même été surpris de la fermeture des cuisines à 20h !
      Surtout quand les magasins de glaces sont encore ouverts à 22h!!🍨🍧

      Bref découverte intéressante pour Hervey Bay.
      Mais surtout FRASER ISLAND !😍      Read more

      Hervey Bay 🐠🎣

      Nach dem anstrengenden Tag gestern, sind wir es heute ein wenig entspannter angegangen. Als erstes haben wir uns aus dem Supermarkt wieder leckere Vanillepudding-Taschen zum Frühstück geholt. 🥮

      Dann ging es zum Koala Weekend Market, welcher sich mehr als Flohmarkt entpuppte. Fini ist trotzdem fündig geworden und hat ein paar Kerzen geschossen. 🕯️

      Den restlichen Vormittag haben wir dann im botanischen Garten verbracht. Neben Schildkröten und Leguanen haben wir wieder eine Vielzahl von verschieden Vögeln beobachten können. 🐢🦜🪶🦎

      Ein Highlight der Stadt, neben dem kilometerlangen Strand, ist der fast 1 Kilometer lange Steg, der ins offene Meer hineinragt. 🌊🐚 Auf dem Steg waren viele Leute beim Angeln und wir konnten sehen, wie ein junger Mann einen Rochen am Harken hatte. Nachdem sie diesen mithilfe eines größeren Harkens den bestimmt 4 Meter hohen Steg hochgezogen hatten, haben sie ihn aber wieder frei gelassen. Ziemlich brutal anzusehen. 🎣

      Neben duschen und einkaufen stand heute nicht mehr viel an. 🛒🚿

      Hervey Bay-Steg

      Nach dem unerwarteten Abendessen gestern mussten wir uns heute morgen zuerst ein wenig erholen. Kurz vor Mittag entschieden wir uns dann für einen Fussmarsch Richtung Shelly Beach, wo tatsächlich ziemlich viele Muscheln im Sand lagen. Danach ging es der Esplanade entlang und später dann auf den unendlich langen Steg „hinaus“ aufs offene Meer. Am Stegende angekommen kehrten wir relativ schnell wieder um, da uns der Wind dort mit einer unangenehmen Geschwindigkeit um die Ohren blies. Unser Weg führte uns dann wieder zurück zum Campingplatz, da wir vom vielen Laufen hungrig wurden. Wir hatten ja noch Pasta übrig und da die Portion Fish&Chips sehr gross war, gab es auch nochmals etwas Fisch. Den Rest vom Nachmittag verbrachten wir gemütlich auf dem Campingplatz mit Sachen planen und erholen.

      Después de la inesperada cena de ayer, teníamos que recuperarnos un poco esta mañana. Poco antes del mediodía, decidimos caminar hacia Shelly Beach, donde había bastantes conchas en la arena. Luego caminamos por la explanada y más tarde por el interminable embarcadero "hacia fuera" hasta el mar abierto. Cuando llegamos al final del embarcadero, nos volvimos relativamente rápido porque el viento soplaba alrededor de nuestros oídos a una velocidad incómoda. Nuestro camino nos llevó de vuelta al campamento, ya que nos estaba entrando hambre de tanto caminar.       Nach einer Pause mit LKW Reparatur durchs Esszimmerfenster legen wir noch einen kleinen Waschstopp für Bertha Benz ein, um die gröbsten Nationalparkspuren und das schlechte Gewissen etwas zu beseitigen.

      Dann geht es weiter zum heutigen Tagesziel: Hervey Bay.

      HERVEY BEACH & FRASER ISLAND

      Schon vorgestern haben wir über "Get Your Guide" eine Tagestour nach FRASER ISLAND gebucht. Gestern Abend aber eine Absage wegen eines Defekts am Boot bekommen. Gleiches passiert auch einem Paar aus Hennigsdorf. Wir könnten auf's WE umbuchen! So lange wollen wir denn hier nicht bleiben, der Badestrand ist nur mittelmäßig und der Ort eher wie ausgestorben. Nur in den Monaten Juli bis November werfen die Buckelwaale ihre Jungen, da ist hier Whale Watching angesagt...
      Wir sind am Morgen noch am 800 m langen Pier und lassen uns von Locals äTipps geben:

      Day 41

      Tag 40: Noosa,Hervey Bay & Australia Day

      Heute ist hier „Australia Day“, ein nationaler Feiertag. Wenn hier, so wie heute, der Feiertag auf einen Tag am Wochenende fällt, ist dafür dann der nächste Werktag (also Montag) automatisch frei. Tolle Regel - die hätte ich auch gern in Deutschland 😀

      Heute morgen ging es nach dem Kaffee direkt weiter nach Noosa. Wir haben vorher schon gelesen, dass es dort recht schön sein soll, und da wir auf dem Weg nach Hervey Bay quasi dran vorbei gefahren wären, habe wir kurzerhand unser Frühstück nach Noosa verlegt.
      Gut gestärkt haben wir Noosa im Anschluss zu Fuß erkundet. Wir sind erst die Promenade mit den ganzen Geschäften entlang gelaufen, dann am Strand und noch im Stadtinneren an der Lagune.
      Unser Fazit: eine kleine hübsche Stadt mit vielen Geschäften und tollen Cafés und Restaurants, die zum hinsetzen einladen. Schade, dass wir hier nicht die letzten 2 Tage verbracht haben, hier hätten wir uns wirklich wohl gefühlt.
      Aber gut, man kann nicht alles haben.

      Um die Mittagszeit ging es dann weiter nach Hervey Bay, wo wir unseren Mietwagen abgeben mussten. Hervey Bay selbst ist jetzt auch nicht gerade der Knaller, aber unser Ausgangspunkt für die nächste Ausflüge nach Fraser Island (die nächsten 2 Tage) sowie Lady Elliot.
      Um uns herum ist quasi nichts, also sind wir ca eine halbe Stunde weiter von unserem Hotel weg gelaufen in der Hoffnung, irgendwo noch etwas Leben zu finden. Aber so wirklich fündig geworden sind wir nicht. Dafür, dass Feiertag ist und überall Feste gefeiert werden sollte, war das ziemlich tote Hose. Vielleicht muss man in einer großen Stadt sein, um etwas davon mitzubekommen. Keine Ahnung. Wir sind zum Essen im örtlichen Bootsclub gelandet und haben beide den Altersdurchschnitt um einiges gesenkt 😂

      Rest Day ....

      Decided to change site, but stay in Hervey Bay. On our way to the first site we came across a market so ... change of plan, park up and walk around the market.

      It’s lovely to walk around in shorts and shirt. It was incongruous to find a young lad playing Christmas carols on a saxophone, wearing a Christmas hat,Christmas shirt and .... shorts. He played beautiful music as a learner, slowly and with plenty of wrong notes. He was great and made us smile.

      Many of the markets have small stages with live music being played. I guess the performers are not paid and they are of variable quality. One old couple sang 50s songs, probably not quite with the strength and range they once did. A duo sang a number of cover versions of more contemporary music really well.

      Went on to look for the camp site but came across another market ... deja vu.

      We left to find the campsite but when we came across it, it was jammed packed. The reason was due to the powerboat 🚤 racing taking place just off the beach. The campsite was almost on the beach so people had booked to camp there the weekend and could watch from their site.

      We went on to the next campsite, similar location next to the sea, but with a spare pitch. The pitch was front row, but had a bush in front of it so we couldn’t sit in the front and sea the sea, but we could see it either side of the bush. This wasn’t a problem as there was a stiff northerly wind coming straight off the sea and the bush gave us protection.
