    Cuidad de Itas

    October 18, 2017 in Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Cuidad de Itas in the Ghurini language means the city of the rocks. Its a place high up in the mountains made of natural rock formations. It was used by robbers to snatch bulls and cattle and hide them there. They used to multiply them there and butcher the older ones for bartering of goods with the villagers around the area.
The tour normally is combined with the Umajalanta cave tour that happens to be in the same direction. They can take max 6 people in a group.
We reached the tourist office by 7:30 am and started waiting for other people to show up so that we could divide the costs of the tour.
We waited more than 1.5 hrs. 3 groups of people came that were interested in the same tours, but all had formed their groups from before so nome of the them joined us nor could we join them.
In the end, around 9:15 am, we decided to do the tour on our own since no more people were expected to come and it was our last day in Toro Toro.
The tour cost a total of 576 b$ for the 2 of us.

Itas - The 1st cavernous formations

    October 18, 2017 in Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

From the top, we climbed down into the canyon. There were many catedral like cavernous formations beautiful carved out by thousands of years of erosion. The sunlight reflecting from the floor below gave it a very magical effect.

The Itas is basically a collection of natural stone carvations at the top of the hill
There are many interesting formations in the shape of caves and natural arches. From the start of the boulders to the emd of the trail is abou 1 kms. There is a small cave at the start of the trek but there were people inside there so we decided to go to the end first.
On the way, we saw some lovely flowers that had bloomed due to the rains in the last 2 evenings. Our guide Timoteo told is that these from the family of onions. On the way we saw some interesting stone shapes as well.

    Itas - The elephant formation

    October 18, 2017 in Bolivia ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Outside of the 2nd chamber, we saw a natural elephant formation made from erosion. Even the outer surface of the head amd the trunk looked exactly as the texture of an elephant's skin.
Further on, we saw some interesting passages and grottos.

    Itas - Cave paintings

    October 18, 2017 in Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

On the trek back, we saw some cave painting on a flat wall of a boulder. The painting was made most probably from the blood of a sacrificial animal. The guide told us the age of the paintings to be from 15000 BC. I'm not sure about that claim though.
A bit further, we reached the 3rd chamber.

    Itas - 3rd chamber

    October 18, 2017 in Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

The 3rd chamber looked small from outside but was huge inside. The was a beautiful ray of light falling right in the middle of the chamber making it into a magical place. There was also a bridge like stone formation at the top that the locals call Inca's dick.

    Itas - 6th chamber

    October 18, 2017 in Bolivia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

The 6th chamber nearby turned out to be a very small one. It was more like a grotto. But, the interesting thing about it was that the exit to all the formations was from in here via an extremely narrow passageway.

    Itas - The climb back

    October 18, 2017 in Bolivia ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

As we continued our walk back, the views were amazing bit there was one more surprise in store for us. The ladder climb up one of the bolder formations. The last part of these ladders didn't even have a support or a place to hold.
The views from the top were even better. We even saw a Viscacha (a rabbit like animal endemic to the Andes).Read more

    Ciudad de Itas

    December 24, 2017 in Bolivia ⋅ 🌙 14 °C
