      A great Michael Jackson video was filmed right here in the plaza. It looks the same as it does in the video (see attached).

      We visited three interesting churches. The Cathedral Basílica do Santíssimo Salvador (built by the Jesuits in 1654) in baroque style. Then we visited the Church of St Francis of Assisi (1774), a Franciscan church, which was very different with many beautiful tile murals made and brought from Portugal. The church had more gold than can be imagined, with some 1,800 pounds of gilded woodwork.

      From here, we continued on to the 18th century Basílica Santuário Senhor do Bonfim. The miracle room is where people leave their ribbon near a replica of the body part that needs healing and when it breaks your wish comes true (this is in addition to simply wearing it – but which will come sooner?). On the outside of the Church are a collection of ribbons people left for good luck.      Læs mere

      Salvador ist eine Stadt mit grossen Gegensätzen. Wir sind im Centro Storico untergebracht. Dort hat es Kirchen mit viel Gold, viele Galerien, viele Beizli und ebensoviele Touristen. Daneben als Kontrast gibt es Quartiere, die fast nur aus Ruinen bestehen und viele Leute, die auf der Strasse leben!
      Plötzlich auftretende Regenfälle zeigten uns, dass wir in den Tropen angekommen sind (gestern und heute wurden wir ziemlich nass...).
      Auf den Strassen im Zentrum gibt's überall laute Musik bis spät in die Nacht. Man merkt, dass 80% der Salvodianer afro-brasilianische Wurzeln haben.      Læs mere

      Salvador de Bahia, Brazil (Day 2)

      We didn’t change our minds!

      About what to do on our second day in Salvador de Bahia, that is. We remained on the ship even though with the slightest encouragement, I would have probably been willing to change my mind.

      With a high of 86F — and a feels like temperature of only 90F — today was slightly cooler. It’s all relative, isn’t it? 🤪 A bit of overcast in the morning and a breeze that picked up in the afternoon helped us to feel more comfortable. Nonetheless, similar temps are in the forecast for the next four days, so resting up today was the smart thing to do.

      Mui and I were both up around 6:00a. Originally, today was supposed to have been our only day in Salvador de Bahia. Thus, ship’s tours were leaving early. Which meant that the Terrace Café would be open at 6:30a. We took advantage of that to have an early breakfast on the outside deck.

      Then, we each went about our day-of-relaxation activities. For me, that was writing. For Mui, that was working on his new hobby in the Artist’s Loft … another contemporary piece. The new instructor was there to critique and offer pointers. Mom liked the picture I sent her of the piece, so she’s got first dibs on it.

      Overall, it was a quiet day. We had lunch and dinner both at the Terrace Café as well … the former with Sonia & Boris; the latter with Pat & Norm.

      We wrapped up the day at the show … headlining E. Sarah Carter, a fiddler, who performed “Celtic Rock” for us tonight … very high energy. She learned the Irish fiddle by ear in the Donegal tradition and was a solo fiddle player with Michael Flatley’s “Lord of the Dance.” She didn’t play many Irish tunes tonight, however … holding those for her St Patrick’s Day concert.

      We have a midday arrival at our next port of call, so a relaxing morning at sea awaits us tomorrow.      Læs mere

      6 Mars Salvador de Bahia

      Après une nuit de navigation nous arrivons à 09h00 à Salvador de Bahia. Ancienne capitale du Brésil la ville a été fondée en 1549., 40 à 45% des 2,5 millions d’habitants y vivent dans des favélas.
      Le centre ville ainsi que le marché ont été bien rénovés et sont bien bien plus propres que l’an passé

      C’est à Salvador qu’à été tourné le clip de Michael Jackson dont nous avons déjà parlé lors de la visite de la favéla de Santa Marta

      Nous faisons un petit tour au marché avant de rejoindre notre excursion pour
      Praia do Forte, une petite bourgade
      , à 70 Kms au nord de Salvador, qui a son origine abritait un fort avance de surveillance de la ville. C’est aujourd’hui une station balnéaire avec une très belle plage.
      Sur les 7 espèces de tortues marines, 5 viennent pondre au Brésil dont 3 dans l’état de Bahia.

      Le village de Praia do forte est charmant et très touristique avec de nombreux magasins et restaurants bordant la grande rue centrale. Après une visite très rapide au centre de protection des tortues, nous nous rendons sur la plage, une très belle plage tropicale bordée de cocotiers. L’eau extrêmement chaude sûrement au dessus de 32deg.
      Nous terminons notre visite par un peu de shopping avant de retourner au port.
      Pour clore cette belle journée nous faisons un tour en soirée au Pelourinho pour goûter les acaraje arrosé de caipirinha

      Welcome to Brazil

      Welcome to Brazil! One thing that I noticed right away is that Brazil is very colorful and full of music. My first stop on my Brazil adventure was Salvador da Bahia. Known for its amazing carneval in February and the colorful houses of the old town Pelourinho as well as lots of pretty beaches. I stayed in Salvador for 3 days.
      But.. Salvador is also known for pickpockets and the lack of security when you walk around! At all times I had to make sure I would not use my phone on the streets and be aware of all my valuables - even the uber driver that picked me up from the airport told me this right away.
      What I did not know about Salvador is that this city has more churches than days of the year, people hardly speak any english even at the airport and it is really difficult to buy SIM cards or bustickets without a cpf (tax identification number) which is apparently more important than the passport. Nevertheless, the people of Salvador despite the lack of english were just wonderful. Everyone was friendly, helpful and open - traits tourists from other parts of Brazil also mentioned. Salvador and Bahia (the region) in general has a strong african influence which you can definitely taste, see and feel.
      And even though I’m not able to experience the carneval here it definitely showed me how carnaval could be. Loud, colorful and full of music. Everywhere in the streets of the old town you could hear drums playing. And thanks to our wonderful „free walking tour“ guide we were even able to experience a true Brazilian futbol game. At the match you could truly feel the energy in the air. So much that you get the feeling that the people are only there for the music and not so much for the actual match! Definitely a great experience I will never forget. Can‘t wait to see what Brazil has to offer next!      Læs mere

      Bright City - Dark Past

      Ironically, the most brightly colored part of Salvador de Bahia has its darkest past. The Pelourinho neighborhood takes its name from the whipping post which once stood here.

      Until slavery was outlawed in 1888, this is where African slaves were bought, sold, and punished.

      Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, full of tourist shops.

      In 1996, Michael Jackson was filmed here for his song “They Don’t Really Care About Us.”

      Today, a cut out of “the King of Pop” still stands in the same balcony as he did in his music video.

      We didn’t go into the building, but it’s a popular photo stop for MJ fans. When I get back home, I plan to watch the video. It will be fun to see if we recognize any of the settings, since parts of the video were also filmed in Rio.      Læs mere

      Salvador

      In Salvador kommen wir am Nachmittag nach einem 1,5 h Flug von Recife und 30 min. Fahrt mit dem Taxi in der Altstadt im Hotel Casa do Amarelindo an. Hier haben wir von unserem Balkon einen netten Blick über die Stadt.
      Schnell wird klar, dass die Schere zwischen Armut und Reichtum hier sehr groß ist und man sich nur im geringen Radius sicher bewegen kann. Dies zeigt auch die Karte mit der gelben gesperrten Kennzeichnung, welche wir vom Hotel ausgehändigt bekommen.
      Wir spazieren daher auf Empfehlung zu den jeweiligen markierten Adressen und treffen einen freundlichen Künstler auf der Straße an, der mit uns direkt musiziert und die Grundlagen des Capoeira demonstriert. Hier kaufen wir ein für uns zuvor unbekanntes Musikinstrument, das Agogo.
      Anschließend gehen wir ins Restaurant Mariposa und essen zum ersten Mal Moqueca, ein traditionelles brasilianisches Nationalgericht, welches uns sehr gut schmeckt. Danach hören wir noch einige Künstler auf der Straße beim Trommeln zu und sind fasziniert über die brasilianische Musik.
      Nichts desto trotz fühlen wir uns aufgrund der großen Armut und der aufdringlichen, sehr ungepflegten Menschen nicht sicher und alles andere als Wohl. Daher beschließen wir statt der vorgesehenen zwei Nächte nur eine Nacht zu bleiben und vorzeitig abzureisen, um mehr Zeit in der friedlichen Natur in Morro de São Paulo auf der Insel Ilha de Tinharé zu verbringen.       Stadtbesichtigung Salvador: mit einem Uber zum Mercado Modelo, große Halle mit Souvenirshops zu günstigen Preisen. Im ersten Stock befinden sich saubere Toiletten. Mit dem Fahrstuhl zur kolonialen Altstadt (UNESCO Weltkulturerbe) in der Oberstadt. Hier wurden einige Häuser restauriert, andere zentral gelegenen Kirchen und ehemalige Prachtstück warten noch auf eine Renovierung.
      Das Video von Michael Jackson: They don't care about us (Brazil Version) wurde hier gedreht.
      Ein Uber bringt uns zum Leuchtturm Barra. Dee Sonnenuntergang soll von dort besonders schön sein. Hier gibt es schöne Strände zum Baden und man kann Sonnenschirme mieten. Allerdings ist es ziemlich überfüllt. Wir badet und probieren verschiedene Sachen zum Essen aus, die hier zahlreich angeboten werden. Keine Ahnung was das alles war, aber es hat gut geschmeckt. Da die Kriminalität in Salvador hoch ist, haben wir alle Wertsachen in der Unterkunft gelassen und in der Hosentaschen nur einzelne Geldscheine für die Ausgaben des Tages. Zum Sonnenuntergang nehmen zur Sicherheit wieder einen Uber.

      City tour of Salvador: take an Uber to the Mercado Modelo, a large hall with souvenir shops at reasonable prices. There are clean toilets on the first floor. Take the elevator to the colonial old town (UNESCO World Heritage Site) in the upper town. Some houses have been restored here, other centrally located churches and former gems are still waiting to be renovated.

      An Uber takes us to the Barra lighthouse. The sunset is said to be particularly beautiful from there. There are beautiful beaches for swimming and you can rent umbrellas. However, it is quite crowded. We swim and try out various things to eat, which are offered in abundance here. No idea what it was all about, but it tasted good. Since crime is high in Salvador, we left all valuables in the accommodation and only had a few banknotes in our pockets for the day's expenses. At sunset we take another Uber to be on the safe side.      Læs mere
