Walking Tour of Dubrovnik

This was a fantastic tour of Dubrovnik. Our guide Vlaho is a long-term resident of the old town and fought in the defense of the town in 1991. He was excellent at covering huge amounts of history in succinct and interesting ways. If he decides to stop being a tour guide, he really ought to be a history professor.

We learned that we pretty much all pronounce Dubrovnik wrong, even people in other parts of Croatia. Natives to the area call it DUB-rove-nik.

There's a bit of old Latin graffiti from a monk to the boys who kept playing football in front of the monastery: Peace be with you, remember that you, playing with the ball, will die. I guess even monks lose their patience sometimes.

Dubrovnik's highest value is freedom, or "Libertas", which we saw everywhere. They managed to stay free for a long time by playing both sides or paying people off to be allowed to remain free. They were the only area in the region that was still allowed a great deal of autonomy under the Ottoman Empire. They even outlawed slavery in the 1400s.

Rectors only served for a month at a time and were completely cut off from anyone's that it could be no possibility of bribes to try to ensure that justice would be served and that they would not be able to use their position to help themselves.Read more

Split to Dubrovnik to Mostar

Today we travelled by bus to Dubrovnik to put some luggage in storage then got on another bus to travel back up to Mostar. We had 5 border crossings/passport stamping (switching between Croatia and Bosnia), spent 9 hours on the bus and only ended up about 150 km from where we started in Split! When we arrived in Dubrovnik we had to beg for a luggage storage service (because it’s the end of the season and everything closes over Winter) but we managed to strike a deal and we were very relieved that our long day of travelling was worth the drama.Read more

Nach kurzer Fahrt in Montenegro kam ich an die Grenze als alleiniger 'Gast', so ging es ganz schnell. Man wollte nur den Perso und den Kfz- schein sehen.
In Kroatien sind die Strassen in noch besserem Zustand und die Magistrale führt an der Steilküste entlang mit toller Sicht.
Dann nahm ich den lokalen Bus, um vom CP die 10km in die Stadt und retour zu fahren.
Die Stadt selbst ist einzig...

Old city

It’s been a while! Haven’t been posting because I haven’t been taking many photos. Yesterday consisted of touring the old city. Pretty amazing besides two things. The amount of people (can’t imagine what it would be like during the actual tourist season) and parking that cost €42 for 5 hours!
Food was yum yum and the weather was a nice 89 degrees with low low humidity.Read more

Dubrovnik

Wie so viele der Mittelmeerstädte ist auch Dubrovnik aus dem typischen Kalkstein erbaut, der sehr hart und langlebig ist. Das sieht man wunderbar an den glatt und glänzend gelaufenen Wegen. In Verbindung mit Regen werden sie allerdings zur ungeplanten Rutschpartie..

Durch die Serie Game of Thrones ist Dubrovnik noch bekannter geworden. Das merkt man deutlich an den Eintrittspreisen. Der Rundgang auf der 2 km langen Stadtmauer kostet 35 Euro pro Person. Alle Museen in Old City kosten noch mal extra.
Da lohnt sich schon das City Ticket für 35 Euro pro Person für 1 Tag (auch für 3 und 7 Tage). Das beinhaltet u.a. den Eintritt auf der Stadtmauer, die Museen und alle Busse in Dubrovnik.
Essen in der Altstadt ist ein sehr teures Vergnügen.
Als Beispiel: 0,5L Bier 7-8€, 0,1L Wein 7€, Pizza 30cm 17€ und Spaghetti nicht unter 19€.
Aber wir haben das Glück der Vorsaison. Es ist noch nicht all zu viel los, auf der Stadtmauer lässt es sich gut flanieren. Wenn erst täglich mehrere Kreuzfahrtschiffe hier ankern, sieht das wieder anders aus.Read more

Walking On the Walls

Our guide Antonia took us on a 2 mile walk along the top of the wall surrounding the medieval city of Dubrovnik. The sites were spectacular as she explained the development of this city as a commercial trading post. Throughout history Dubrovnik has been blessed with wise negotiators who achieved diplomatic solutions to many of the state’s problems. When the French came under Napoleon in the early 19th century, the citizens here knew that they could not resist. Therefore they surrendered and accepted French rule. The advantage was that Napoleon granted them a stable government and many improvements in health and education. He destroyed no buildings and left the city walls built in the 11th century completely intact. On the other hand in 1991 when neighbor Serbia attacked Dubrovnik, it was clear that military resistance was the only option. After walking around the city we took a tramway to the top of a mountain overlooking the town. We had lunch at the top of a scenic mountain and then visited the adjacent museum inside a two-hundred-year-old fortress. Fort Imperial was built by Napoleon, but it was used in 1995 by the Croatian military to defend the town against Serbian attacks. On a single day 19 citizens were killed and 60 were wounded by Serbian aggressors. Now Fort Imperial houses a museum with photographs and equipment from what this nation calls the Homeland War.

After our foray on the mountain top, we returned to the streets of Dubrovnik. For an hour we simply walked around and hung out in the historic area. Completely surrounded by 11th and 12th century structures one can lose oneself in time. After exploring the streets and alleyways we reluctantly returned to the 21st-century and took the bus back to the ship.Read more

Day 13
Letzter Tag in Dubrovnik

Heute Abend fliegen wir zurück nach Hannover. Aber bis dahin huschten wir noch in Dubrovnik von Schatten zu Schatten, weil es sehr warm war. Wir entschieden uns gegen die Besteigung der Stadtmauern aufgrund des Preises (knapp 30 Euro p.P.!) und aufgrund der Hitze. Stattdessen saßen wir bei einem kühlen Getränk in einem Cafe bei der Revelinfestung und schauten über den alten Hafen.
Dann ließen wir uns von den Menschenmassen aus der Altstadt vertreiben und fuhren frühzeitig Richtung Lapad, wo unser Apartment lag. Dort konnten wir netterweise unser Gepäck zwischenlagern, bis wir mit Uber und Airportbus zum Flughafen fahren mussten. Im Bus wurde uns zum Abschied noch ein Blick über die Bucht von Dubrovnik bei Sonnenuntergang geboten.

Day 33
Dubrovnik Walls Part I

Pretty sure this has become my most favourite town EVER! We walked the wall today and had perfect weather with clear blue skies. It is the most number of photos we have taken in one day on our entire trip so far! And with good reason, the views were spectacular and got better with every turn. As a result this post will be spread over about 2-3 because I cannot choose my favourite 20 photos for one day.

We had the wall to ourselves for most of the time we were there and I cannot imagine what it would be like in summer when you would be sharing it with hundreds of others. Today is a day where I think it is 100% worth not being able to swim because the water is cold and most of the restaurants are closed because the trade-off is that we are experiencing something like the Dubrovnik walls without hoards of people.

We took a couple of hours walking the 1940m of wall. There were some quite steep stairs in sections. We were able to get views of various places we had already visited during the previous several days.

We spied a great looking setting for a restaurant which we later visited for lunch, met up with a cat we are sure was my lap warmer a few days before at Buza Bar, found a unique basketball court which is the result of a 700 year old wall gets in the way of your rectangular court requirements, found someone who had 28 pairs of white underwear hanging on their line and possibly the same number of white singlets to match, could peer into lots of backyards where the wall was part of their backyard (imagine!), and found a really spectacular vege patch with a load of citrus trees and grape vines with a great view. We also enjoyed bit of cat spotting including one white cat asleep in the most precarious spot you could imagine.

Many of the rooftops were destroyed by shelling during the Yugoslav Wars in 1991, and during the walk you could clearly see the difference between the original and new terracotta tiles. The walk also brought you up close to the various church bells.Read more

Dubrovnik

Frühes Frühstück, bergauf zur Kirche -knapp 30 Minuten, da der große Bus uns nur dort abholen kann. Nun ist der Kreislauf in Schwung gekommen. Die Fahrt dauert ca 3 Stunden. Tolle Blicke auf das Meer und die Inseln. Die Landschaft ist wirklich traumhaft schön.
Wir halten zum Foto-Stopp um die neue Brücke zu fotografieren, die den direkten Weg nach Dubrovnik ermöglicht, ohne Umweg über Bosnien Herzegowina.
In Dubrovnik erwartet uns unsere Stadtführerin, die uns dann durch die Altstadt führt. Enge Gassen und viele Touristen. Der Gang auf der Stadtmauer kostet inzwischen 35 €. Wir verzichten.

Wir haben 2 Std. Freizeit und ich gucke mal in die Läden für die Touris. Werfe einen Blick in die Kirche und den Palast und lasse mich treiben.
Auf dem Rückweg sehen wir wieder den fruchtbaren Teil des Landes und halten an einem Stand mit hier produzierten Produkten. Empfangen werden wir mit einem Sliwowitz. Ich kaufe sehr leckeres Olivenöl und Feigen .Read more

Das war ein Satz mit X und ...

... war wohl nix. Gestern trafen wir uns mit einem privaten Tour Guide. Peggy führte uns bei herrlichem Wetter 1 1/2 Stunden durch die Altstadt und gab uns gute Tipps mit auf den Weg, was wir in Dubrovnik noch unbedingt anschauen sollen. Sie empfahl uns einen Besuch der Insel Lokrum, einen 2 km langen Spaziergang über die Stadtmauer und einen kleinen Abstecher zur Burg. Wir entschieden uns daher, einen Tag länger als geplant zu bleiben und das Programm heute in Angriff zu nehmen.

Leider war das Wetter heute so richtig miserabel und das sollte sich auch den ganzen Tag nicht ändern 🙄. Wir fuhren trotzdem in die Stadt und stiegen bei strömendem Regen aus dem Taxi aus. Lustlos stapften wir umher und überlegten, was wir machen sollen. Ein Besuch der Insel Lokrum kam wegen der rauhen See nicht mehr in Betracht. Als der Regen eine Pause einlegte🌂, entschieden wir uns Tickets für die Stadtmauer zu kaufen. Die 54 € hierfür hätten wir allerdings genauso gut direkt aus dem Fenster schmeißen können 🤔 ...

Der 2 km lange Spaziergang über die Stadtmauer nimmt normalerweise mindestens 1 1/2 Stunden in Anspruch, da man dabei 1.111 Treppen überwinden muss. Es gibt nur zwei Zugänge und man kann die Tour auch nicht unterbrechen. Wir wussten, dass wir ein Risiko eingehen, aber dass bereits 5 Minuten nach Kauf der Tickets der Regen wieder einsetzte, war schon gemein. Dazu kam noch ein fieser Wind 🌧☔🌬. Unsere Laune war auf dem Nullpunkt und wurde nochmals deutlich schlechter, als aufgrund der schlechten Wetterbedingungen auch noch Höhenangst dazu kam. Normalerweise darf man die Mauer nur in eine Richtung begehen, aber bei diesem Sauwetter waren außer uns nur eine kleine Gruppe junger Männer unterwegs und so kehrten wir um. Für unser Ego war es gut, dass wir die Jungs kurz darauf in der Altstadt wiedersahen. Also nicht nur wir alten Säcke haben gekniffen 😜.

Nach einem guten Mittagessen, das uns etwas mit unserem ansonsten kläglich verlaufenen Dubrovnik Besuch versöhnte, verbringen wir nun den restlichen Tag im Wohnmobil. Ich könnte mir jetzt noch in den Hintern beißen, nicht schon gestern bei schönem Wetter die Stadtmauer besucht zu haben. Die Ausblicke von da oben sind schon toll.
