      Easter Saturday in Biarritz

      OMG just realised I haven’t written up the day, and it’s 10.40 and I’m showered and ready for bed…and there’s so much to say, but will try and make it concise!! First, I must elaborate about the wonderful dinner last night, rather than just the photos…it was at La Table de Sébastien Gravé, and a very special night. And for €49 a head it was pretty amazing, compared to our prices for the equivalent meal.

      Anyway, today we got the bus to Biarritz. Another beautiful day, and found it is as enchanting as ever. It is ritzy, but not formal and posh…in the front there is La Grande Plage (where today there was a surf carnival, sounded just like Manly with the loud speakers etc) then there are promenades each way, which lead to many other coves and beaches, and amazing rock formations. So beautiful…Carole and John were blown away I think, and tomorrow we all plan to return there for another day of relaxation.. Biarritz is between Bayonne and st Jean de Luz….bigger and it is where the airport is. So we had a light lunch in the little fishing village area, walked to the lighthouse, and eventually went to get the bus back at about 5 o’clock…

      Well that was the start of the craziness…we knew the jamon festival in Bayonne was a big thing, plus it’s Easter Saturday and a holiday, but we got the bus at the beginning of the journey back, and with the crowds waiting it was full to start…I managed to get a seat, but the others stood the whole way, as at each stop more people packed on…all about 20+ and obviously heading to Bayonne to rage! It was quite funny, and happy…like a party bus…and when we got back, Bayonne was crazy…crowds that you could hardly walk through…

      We wanted to find somewhere for dinner, but had doubts of the possibility…but happily found a creperie that had tables not yet full, and that was a good dinner..galettes with Basque jambon, cheese etc. (very like 4 Frogs!)…getting back to the hotel was a feat…Amr and I stayed out and tried to find somewhere to eat tomorrow night, but places were either closed or not taking bookings…so we’ll see…maybe a late lunch in Biarritz! And another funny thing, at the creperie, when Amr and I were waiting in line for the one toilet, we got talking to the couple in front of us and he was amazed we were Aussies and said he lived in Australia 10 years ago, and in Manly!! He couldn’t believe we lived in Manly, and thus developed a great friendship!!

      Easter Sunday, another trip to Biarritz

      Our last day in Bayonne - and we decided to go again to Biarritz…it is so easy on the bus (even if chaotic on the return journey!) and the lovely weather holds. So first we went to the aquarium which we had seen yesterday and planned to return to…Carole and John were very impressed and happy there, and we didn’t last as long as they did, but it was a good display, and we agreed to meet at the same fish restaurant as yesterday at 2pm, for a late lunch. We went by there earlier, and our waiter recognised us and said if we came at 2 it would be fine (the sign said finish lunch at 2, but we did see them seating people after that, a flexi schedule).

      So we met at 2 and had a lovely Easter feast. Not quite as frenetic as yesterday but all quite busy, and the bus coming back to Bayonne was as crowded as ever. After lunch we all went our separate ways. C and J went back to see the Basque Museum in Bayonne, and we wandered along the waterfront one last time, had a coffee and after more wandering had a drink at a very swish bar (the array of bottles was impressive).

      Now back, and getting ready to get the little train up to St Jean Pied de Port tomorrow morning. About to meet C and J for a drink, and maybe a very small snack (I am still full from lunch)…

      Back from our small eating…I just ordered cheese as couldn’t face an actual plate, even salad! Maybe it was because I ate all the mash they served with the fish! It was delicious, with a touch of nutmeg…tonight it was a plate of lots of cheese to share, so we have smuggled a supply out in a napkin to have tomorrow…but some cheese, bread and a glass of red was all I needed now…and an Easter egg from the hotel reception! Perfect. Walking back we noticed that the clouds are gathering…I think our perfect weather may be ending…can’t complain though, it has been so good.      Baca lagi

      An excursion to St Jean de Luz

      7 April 2023, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

      The weather is holding up beautifully and today we got the train (3 stops) to St Jean de Luz. Such as lovely place, as we discovered 18 months ago - a long line of beach with cliffs, a fishing port section, lovely Basque style houses…very much a summer resort.

      We walked the length of the beach, and up to the high point on one end from where you can look back and see the line of Pyrenees mountains coming right to the coast. We sat and had a light lunch (as we have a dinner reservation tonight at 8pm in a rather special restaurant we discovered last visit). We had intended to go back to the market where we had seen a man making paella - it looked and smelled wonderful, and he was in the process of adding a sack of mussels and then chorizo…but when we came back it was all gone!! Oh well, John had spotted a nice little place to eat and we were content. So we had a beautiful day of wandering the streets and coast. Sat and had a kindle time in a square before coming back about 5 o’clock. It actually got too hot sitting in the sun!! We knew that was the prediction and had layers to remove…it had been quite cold in the early morning.

      Now downtime before dinner…..back from dinner…a real experience of fine dining! We had stumbled on this restaurant last time, and managed to get a booking for tonight, in the annex…the main part is very small, and so they have a room 2 doors up the street for about 30 more people. They run dishes to and fro on trays…lovely waiters, so busy running all night. Won’t describe each course, but you will see from the photos how special it was, and the tastes amazing.       Adieu Départment Landes

      Heute sende ich Euch regnerische, aber dennoch gut gelaunte Grüße aus einem Wald vor den Toren der Stadt Orthez. Vorgestern verließ ich das hässliche Mont-de-Marsan am späten Vormittag und beendete den Wandertag am Abend zwischen zwei Maisfeldern bei Horsarrieu. Gestern Abend erreichte ich wiederum das Département Pyrénées Atlantiques, das mir mit seiner hügeligen Vorpyrenäenlandschaft einen Vorgeschmack auf das Folgende gibt. -Ein echter Motivationsschub!
      Sofern sich kein vierzehnter bedauerlicher Einzelfall ereignet und ich von der Polizei erschossen werde, sollte ich schon sehr bald an den echten Bergen ankommen. Zunächst scheint der gerade wieder stärker werdende Regen aber mein größtes Problem darzustellen. Bis demnächst!      Baca lagi

      Perce les nuages avec maman 🤗

      Notre 6e étape de notre chemin, qui est en réalité la 37e sur 39 étapes du Camino de la Voie de Tours.
      Étape #37 Sordes-l’Abbaye à Arancou
      Kilomètres parcourus: 15,2 km
      Cumulatif : 174 km. , moy de : 26,5 km par jour.

      Aujourd’hui cette rando elle était pour maman. Elle m’a accompagnée pendant les montées que nous avons rencontrées.

      Nous étions 8 pèlerins à contempler les beaux paysages. Sur un cliché on aperçoit même les Pyrénées au loin. Ce fut une rando plus courte mais tellement agréable à l’image de maman. Elle était pour toi maman celle-là « I Love You ❤️ »      Baca lagi

      De Retour en France

      Heute gibt's wohl den bisher kürzesten Bericht. Es war ein reiner Fahrtag, der am frühen Abend in Frankreich, im kleinen Städtchen Benesse-Maremne, direkt neben der Kirche Église Saint-Martin endete. In Spanien wurde nochmal voll getankt und eingekauft. Mehr "Aktionen" waren bei dem vielen Regen ohnehin nicht drin.
      Wir hoffen auf baldige Wetterbesserung und genießen aber in jedem Fall die ebenfalls schöne französische Landschaft.

      Capbreton Surfer Hotspot

      Mittlerweile sind alle müde nach einem langen Tag am Strand in Capbreton.
      Sind ca 1,5 Stunden gefahren und nun an einem richtigen Surfer Hot Spot angelangt. Sehr schön anzusehen, wie sie mehr oder weniger geübt durch die Wellen reiten. Respekt. Die Wellen sind schon ziemlich cool und hoch und man würde am liebsten selber das Board schnappen, aber das lassen wir mal lieber 😁😁
      Stehen heute allerdings alles andere als alleine, gefühlt sind 100 Womos auf dem Platz. Vorzüglich Surfer oder Rentner mit Hund🫣      Baca lagi

      Bilbao - Capbreton

      Não podíamos deixar de visitar o Guggenheim e passar umas longas horas a pasmar com as exposições ali patentes ;)

      Depois seguimos ‘diretos’ para França e deixámos San Sebastian para uma estadia futura (quando nos Pirinéus houver menos gelo e der para andar de bike e fazermos umas caminhadas…).Baca lagi

      Capbreton

      ... ein kleines Örtchen am südlichen Zipfel der franz. Altantikküste mit einem gigantischen, wunderschönen Strand ist unser heutiges, vorerst letztes Ziel in Frankreich. Nur noch wenige Kilometer trennen uns hier von der spanischen Nordküste und dem baskischen San Sebastian, das wir von hier aus am Horizont sehen können.

      Unsere heutige Etappe umfasst 465km... und nach den gestrigen Strapazen sind wir froh, dass die Nationalstraßen es gut mit uns meinen. Vor Bordeaux fahren wir auf die Autobahn und kommen kurz nach Überquerung der imposanten Pont d'Aquitaine sogar noch für ein paar Minuten in den zweifelhaften Genuss, im Stau auf der von Streikenden blockierten Autobahn zu stehen. Wir haben noch Glück im Unglück, denn schon nach wenigen Minuten setzt sich ein Konvoi von Autos mit wehenden Fahnen in Polizeibegleitung in Bewegung. Es sieht exakt aus wie ein Safetycar-Einsatz bei einem Formel 1-Rennen. Nachdem die Fahrzeuge eine gewisse Geschwindigkeit erreicht haben, verlassen sie die Fahrspuren und lassen den langsam wieder anlaufenden Verkehr vorbeirollen.

      In Capbreton angekommen, richten wir uns auf dem einfachen, aber absolut sympathischen Stellplatz vor den Dünen des Atlantiks ein. Wir sind hier mit allem versorgt, sogar Strom ist mit in den 10,50€ enthalten, die der nette Platzwart gegen Abend kassieren kommt. Der Stellplatz ist gut gefüllt, was sicher den vielen Surfern zu verdanken ist... was für ein Kontrast zu den leeren Stellplätzen im Inland. Und es ist warm, erstaunlich warm für einen Märztag direkt am Atlantik.

      Wir genießen die tollen Stunden am Strand und sind uns schon jetzt sicher, dass wir wiederkommen werden.      Baca lagi

      Capbreton 🏖

      Gestern erlebten wir schon wieder einen Tag, den kein Mensch braucht. Es fing schon damit an, dass am Vorabend unsere Kerze beim Wegstellen runterfiel und das Kerzenwachs dabei auf 4 (!) Sitzpolster verspritzt wurde. Ich bin jetzt mal höflich und erwähne nicht, wer DER Schuldige war 🤪.

      Bei der Abfahrt vom Stellplatz in Domme ignorierten wir das Schild "Toutes directions" und schenkten unserem (LKW-) Navi Vertrauen. Das war ein riesengroßer Fehler. Die Straße wurde immer enger und enger und am Ende landeten wir auf einem Feldweg und mussten unter abenteuerlichen Bedingungen auf einem Privatanwesen mit einer Toreinfahrt wenden. Gut, dass unser Womo nicht 3 cm höher war. Sonst hätten wir über 1 km auf diesem Sträßchen rückwärts fahren müssen 😱. Langsam fange ich an, unser Navi zu hassen 😡.

      Nach über 100 km auf kleinen Landsträßchen war ich richtig froh, die Kreditkarte zücken zu müssen und dafür ab sofort auf komfortablen Straßen fahren zu dürfen 🙈.

      Nach über 5 Stunden Fahrt landeten wir in Capbreton und waren vom ersten Augenblick an absolut begeistert. Der Stellplatz liegt direkt hinter den Dünen eines fantastischen Strandes. Hier wollten wir den Sonnenuntergang verbringen, aber unsere Pechsträhne sollte für heute noch nicht zu Ende sein.

      Bevor wir losgingen, kümmerte ich mich noch schnell um die Entfernung der Wachsspritzer und war mit dem Ergebnis nur leidlich zufrieden 🥴. Aber jetzt stand erstmal der Sonnenuntergang im Mittelpunkt. Wir packten eine Bastmatte und Getränke ein. Am Strand verhielt sich diese Matte wie ein fliegender Teppich und beim Kampf mit ihr fiel unser Rucksack um und mein gesamter Wein lief aus. Thomas' Handy wurde dabei geflutet 🙈. Die Stimmung für den Sonnenuntergang war dann natürlich ruiniert. Dazu trug auch bei, dass die Sonne in Wolken statt im Meer versank 😭.

      Der heutige Tag dagegen war grandios. Wir hatten nun die Gewissheit, dass Thomas' Handy das Bad im Wein unbeschadet überlebt hat 🙏 und machten eine Radtour zum Plage du Penon mit vielen Zwischenstopps mit immer wieder fantastischen Ausblicken auf die Küste. Unser Glück war perfekt, als wir in der chilligen Strandbar "La Cabane du Penon" landeten und wir dort auch noch ganz unerwartet in den Genuss richtig leckerer Tapas kamen 😋.

      Außerdem wiederholten wir unser Abenteuer "Sonnenuntergang am Strand". Dieses Mal verlief alles perfekt und die Stimmung war super 💃❤🥳.      Baca lagi
