    Im Hotel

    June 19 in France

Chaos.

Aside from being home to the incredible cathedral, Reims is also the centre of the Champagne region, famous for obvious reasons! The vineyards and manor houses here are also on the world heritage list, so we set off exploring!

There were a few large manor houses (home to champagne companies) just near us, so we took a few photos and videos before heading about 30 minutes south to the town of Epernay, where a lot of the actual vineyards are located.

Interested to discover that champagne is officially a blend - they mix up grapes from different vineyards and years before ageing them all in the bottle. It's also fermented a second time while in the bottle, and it's this that creates the bubbles.

The town was quite cute, and home to the abbey where a monk named Dom Perignon developed the art (though he wasn't the first, contrary to popular belief). Had a good look around the vineyards and the centre of town (centred around Rue de Champagne) before heading back to Reims.

We'd booked a tasting and tour at the Taittinger champagne house but that wasn't until 3:45, so we spent an hour or so just relaxing in our room. Unfortunately the internet wasn't that great so we had to pick and choose what work we were doing!

Eventually we went out for our tasting which was great. We got to go on an underground tour of the cellars where their most expensive selections are fermented. They use natural chalk caves common to the area, as it keeps the temperature and humidity consistent year-round. And of course we had a taste which was lovely as well!

Then back to our room where we spent the rest of the evening.

    Day 439: Eastwards to Reims

    April 29 in France

Early start today, heading back down to Orly airport to pick up our next car. A couple of metros across Paris, then a bus from the south of the city as there was a transport strike on the mainland train lines! There's actually been rolling strikes across most of the French rail network for the last month (and will continue for at least another month), but thankfully we'd already booked our car before that was announced.

This car is a gigantic station wagon, an Opel Astra. Should be fun trying to park this thing! Very smooth to drive though, and with lots of nice features.

We headed north-east out of Paris towards the city of Reims, where our WHS for today is the Cathedral. It's another of the medieval French Gothic cathedrals that were all designed and built around much the same time. This one is notable as being the coronation place of the French kings, and somewhere that Joan of Arc visited a couple of times as well. Very cool.

Also on the list is a nearby Archbishop's palace which we visited briefly, and another church as well which was the burial place of Saint Remy, who brought Christianity to France and inextricably linked it with the French monarchy. Cool stuff.

By now it was around 5pm and our Airbnb was ready, so we drove over there and checked in. It's basically in a student housing thing, just a small room with a bed, desk, bathroom, and micro kitchen. Nothing fancy, but fine for a couple of days. About the only thing open on a Sunday night was a random convenience store, so it was a loaf of bread with brie and cured meats for dinner!

    Reims, Hotel Crystal

    July 7, 2016 in France

Reims is a beautiful town - We´ve been there, when France played against France during the EM - it was just awesome to see the French celebrating after the game!

If you come to Reims - it is your duty to drink champagne! Reims is the center of the champagne - there are worse duties ;-)

    Reims

    August 4, 2016 in France

We decided to run away from rainy Paris and check out the wineyard landscape. Reims was our first stop on our champagne route. We were amazed by Cathedrale de Notre Dame in Reims💒 Gorgeous vitrages inside! Thor had to wait outside. No big deal though as he hates churches anyway 😁🐕

    Champaign country road tour

    September 15, 2017 in France

Started in Reims center. Notre Dame cathedral impressive - effort to maintain it is staggering

Did the Champaign road tour south from Reims ending
Up Beaune. Went through dozens of small villages and lots of grape country.
Lunch in a nice French family restaurant in a small village.

Beaune is really nice, lively, historic town - very nice to just wander around.
We are in a VERY historic hotel right in the city center.Read more
