      The Sun King and Versailles

      April 5, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Our afternoon saw us on a 45 minute bus ride out of Paris to the palace of Versailles where we spent an hour and a half wandering through the gardens. There are a variety of different garden areas scattered over many acres and we didn't even begin to scratch the surface of these vast and beautiful green spaces dotted with fountains, topiary and ponds before we had to return to our tour meeting point. We did learn in hindsight that there are golf carts for rent in the gardens that would have allowed us to see more in our allotted time.
After buying a Versailles magnet for our fridge, we re-joined our tour group and entered the Palace. We were told that Versailles started as a hunting lodge for the king and then was expanded into the huge palace and gardens later.
We toured through the ballroom, the King's chambers, the Queen's boudoir and the hall of mirrors. Everywhere we saw beautiful red and white marble, delicate plaster work and ceilings covered in paintings depicting the gods. Portraits of the Royal family members lined the walls and the splendor of the palace surrounded us and emphasized how different life was within these walls.
Crystal chandeliers hung in each room and would have provided so much sparkle as the beeswax candles flickered in the evenings. Adding to that dazzle were the mirrored walls and gold decorations of the Hall of Mirrors. That room lived up to its hype and would have impressed even the most critical of the Royal opponents. It was easy to hear the swish of silk ball gowns and the clink of long ago champagne flutes in this chamber that still echoes with the music of past dances if you listen just right...

      Versailles

      March 2 in France ⋅ 🌧 8 °C

We headed to the Metro near our place, and a very nice young woman at the ticket office figured out a route for us-- easier than the one I'd conjured. We went from Nation to Alma -Marcrau on the #9 Meto, then transferred to the train which took us to Versailles. We stopped at a little shop for croissants and bevs, and I found an umbrella for €7. Of course I had one in my luggage- and a rain jacket as well- but did I bring them with me?

We stood in a line and spoke with a nice couple from Belfast- and then found out we were in the wrong line.

That put us closer to the beginning of the line we were supposed to be in, and we waited in that one instead. When our turn came, we toured through the Chateau. So many portraits! I wonder how many gallons of paint and linseed oil, and how many miles of canvas.

After the Chateau, we took a stroll through the gardens- the drizzly day provided a view of what the Impressionists would truly have related to .

We returned to the area near the train station and picked up gloves, and Wayne got a cap. (Did I mention it was chilly?). Then back to the Madeleine Cafe where we had some sandwiches for lunch before boarding the train back to our place.

We found a Lidl down the block and around a corner and picked up some snacks. Then back to the room where we tried in vain to get the TV to work🤷‍♀️.

(Also- we figured out that our "apartment" had been a pest removal service.)

      Versailles Gardens

      October 27, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

The gardens around the Versailles Palace deserve a footprint of their own. Magnificent, unfortunately only had 1 hour to explore after seeing the palace and having lunch.

The first picture is the French version of a club fancy club sandwich. Dessert was a lovely citrus tart, and while it looks like it’s on a chocolate plate, unfortunately was plastic, although the leaf was icing.Read more

      The Gardens of Versailles

      July 28, 2023 in France ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

The gardens are magnificent. You could spend an entire day in them.

Louis XIV had the largest collection of exotic fruit trees in Europe. The trees were planted in planter boxes so that in winter they could be moved into the greenhouses!!

Due to time constraints, we visited the Orangery Parterre, Queen's Grove, Latona's Fountain and Parterre, Neptune Fountain and Water Theatre Grove.

      Versailles

      May 8, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Also stoppen wir in Mantes-la-jolie.
Danach wird nun wirklich zur Küste gefahren.

… und hatte einen netten kleinen Garten

      September 6, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

      This, madame, is Versailles

      May 30, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Wer mit „Marie Antoinette“ von der Regisseurin „Sofia Coppola“ vertraut ist, wird sich an folgenden Dialog erinnern:
      „This is ridiculous.“
      „This, Madame, is Versailles“.

      Versailles Palace and Gardens

      June 11, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

The next day, we had booked tickets for entry into the Palace at 10 am. The palace was is Baroque throughout; that was the style at the time of the French Revolution in 1789 . Notables were the Hercules Room, the Salon of Abundance with a painting of the Dauphin (young Louis XV) the Venus Room with a sculpture of Louis XIV as emperor, the Mercury Room where he slept. Bed commissioned by King Louis Phillip D Orleans, when the Palace was commissioned as a museum in 1833.Read more

      Chateau de Versailles

      July 2, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We got an early start to join the masses at the Chateau de Versailles for the day... But our arrival in Versailles was a step up from the regular visit because we were met at the train station by Catherine, a long-time friend of Holly's family. Catherine and her husband Michel live right by the train station, and following our visit at the palace we were heading to Normandy with them for a few days. After Catherine and Michel treated us to tea and pastries, we headed to the gilded castle. We wandered through the gardens, complete with musical fountains, took a quick peak of the Petit and Grand Trianon estates, picnicked on the grounds, then got our chance to visit the main palace. Going from the appartments of the dauphin and dauphines to the State Appartments and the Hall of Mirrors provided a glimpse into the history of the French monarchy and the artists that created the beautiful decor. Compared to the solitude of mountain roads, it was quite the contrast, with the crowds at some points along the visit feeling quite overwhelming. We caught our breath over a mid-afternoon snack, then headed back to Catherine and Michel's to load up the car for the 2-hour drive to Saint-Valery-en-Caux.Read more

A Toutes Les Gloires De La France

      July 28, 2023 in France ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

A really full-on day, so this is being written as we cruise along at 300km per hour on our way to Germany.

Up early and on the road to Versailles. We left our apartment at 7.30 and had to catch two metros and then the RER to reach our destination.

As we pulled into Chateau Versailles station it started raining and raining. Our first port of call was Macca's for coffee (shameful but it was the only option). Then off to add to our brolly collection as the two we had were never going to suffice.

From there it was a short walk of 10 mins to Versailles. Versailles is unreal. We had a really great guide take us through. She was very informative and also relayed some really funny anecdotes about the times of Louie xiv to Louie xvi, also known as Louie the sun (because he thought the sun shone out of him), Louie the fun (because he lived a life of affluence based on his father's grandiose ego), and then Louie the done as he lost his life in the French Revolution.

In 1677 Louis XIV made known his decision to make Versailles his principal residence. The Sun King, sovereign by divine right and with absolute power was intent on dazzling other nations....
