      Le Mont-Saint-Michel 1/2

      An der Grenze der Normandie und der Bretagne gelegen, bezaubert der mehr als 1300 Jahre alte Klosterberg Mont-Saint-Michel uns.

      Der Legende nach wurde Mont-Saint-Michel im Jahr 708 n.Chr. von Bischof Aubert de Avranches errichtet, nachdem ihm mehrmals der Erzengel Michael erschienen war – nach diesem ist das Wunder im Wattenmeer also benannt. Über die Jahrhunderte entwickelte sich der Berg zu einem einzigartigen Mischwesen aus gewachsenem Fels und verschachtelten Baukörpern aus verschiedenen Epochen.

      Doch die Gezeiten haben die Bucht um den Berg fast gänzlich verlanden lassen. Das ist zunächst natürliche Sedimentation, begünstigt durch den Bau eines Dammes vom Festland zum Berg und die Ausdehnung der Salzgraswiesen.      Leggi altro

      Fahr Chica, fahr! Um möglichst lange etwas von der unglaublichen Stadt le Mont Saint Michel zu haben, nutzten wir heute einen unserer Autobahnjoker. Und was sollen wir sagen - es hat sich sowas von gelohnt! 😍 Vor uns erstreckte sich ein Städtchen wie aus einem Walt Disney Film!

      Während die Sonne so langsam unter ging konnten wir uns von diesem Anblick gar nicht satt sehen. Satt war auch das richtig Stichwort: Wir haben sowas von Hunger 🌮 Daher ging es direkt für uns in ein kleines schnuckliges Restaurant um richtig schön französisch zu essen. Beim 2-Gang Menü wurden wir erst mit leckeren Galettes verwöhnt und kamen dann beim Crêpes mit salted Caramel (We Love it) 🥰 so richtig ins schwärmen.

      Im Dunkeln ging es dann ziemlich windig die Treppen hoch zur beeindruckenden Kirche. Beim Anblick der hohen Steinmauern fühlten wir uns etwas wie Zauberschüler aus Hogwarts. Auf dem abenteuerlichen Rückweg am Fluss (komplett im Dunkeln) liefen wir dann in Pfadfindermanier den Weg zurück zu unserem Campingplatz. 🌕✨      Leggi altro

      Es nützt alles nichts, 6°C sind es heute morgen hier und eigentlich müssten hier Eiszapfen von der Decke hängen. Ich werfe die Heizung an, sonst hört das Zähneklappern gar nicht mehr auf.
      Ich bin am Mont-Saint-Michel. Es ist ja, genauso wie der Eifelturm, so etwas wie ein must see wenn man Frankreich ist. Ich stehe mit meinem Wohnmobil nicht in unmittelbarer Nähe, sondern muss einige Kilometer dorthin zurücklegen. Ich entscheide mich heute, statt mit Fahrrad, die Strecke zu Fuß zurückzulegen. Je näher ich meinem Ziel komme, desto mehr Menschen mit dem gleichen Ziel sehe ich. Wow, so viele Menschen, so ein Gewimmel. Da gerade Ebbe ist, lauf ich erst einmal um die Burg herum. Es ist ein toller Anblick. Jetzt kann ich es aber nun erwarten die Burg von innen kennenzulernen. Eigentlich Frauen singen laut vor dem Tor, African Feeling kommt in mir auf, meine Stimmung ist aller best. ich durchschreite das Tor und schon muss ich mich entscheiden, gerade aus oder links. Geradeaus, dann wieder rechts oder weiter geradeaus? Rechts, es geht steil eine Treppe hinauf. So geht es es eigentlich die ganze Zeit. Ich komme durch kleine Gassen, auf verschiedene Ebenen, die mit kleinen Parks daherkommen. Immer wieder habe ich einen tollen Ausblick und in der Ferne kann ich die englische Kanalinsel Jersey entdecken und denke an den tollen Silvesterurlaub den ich mit Linda dort verbracht habe zurück.
      Dann besichtige ich die Abby, heute ist der Eintritt frei, kostet son 11 Euro. Besonders eindrucksvoll ist der Kreuzgang und seine großen Glasfenster. Ich erfahre dass Mont-Saint-Michel immer noch ein Kloster ist. Dort leben getrennt und unabhängig von einander, eine Bruder- und eine Schwesterngemeinschaft in der Monastischen Gemeinschaft zu Jerusalem.
      Die Zeit vergeht wie im Fluge, für mich geht es jetzt wieder zurück, noch sieben Kilometer Fußmarsch habe ich noch vor mir. Puh, was für ein Tag, anstrengend, aber richtig schön. Ich freue mich hier gewesen zu sein.      Leggi altro

      Le Mont-Saint-Michel bezocht. Jammer genoeg niet zo een goed weer, maar toch nog de zon gezien in de namiddag.

      Crowds at Le Mont Saint-Michel

      Arrived about midday to a vast car park and were directed towards a dedicated camper-van area which was about as far away as is possible to get. After a brew we started the long pilgrimage to the Mont. I had read advice not to come in the morning because there would be school trips and the afternoon would be a better time to visit. How wrong could they be!...it was absolutely heaving with people. All the way from the car park, an hours walk to mont saint michel there were so so many people. We went along anyway but in truth it wasn’t at all a pleasant experience, couldn’t see anything but people, we were packed together like sardines. If you know anything about Darren and I you’ll understand how this made us feel. I’m surprised Darren didn’t just flip out like Taz of Tasmania and send French folk flying from the buttresses in all directions. But beyond any expectation we both managed to keep our cool. So very proud of Bliss too who took it all in her stride.
      After a short while we left for the long walk back to the van feeling quite disappointed and mildly stressed out.
      But then Darren informed me that it was open 24hours as it’s basically a village, people actually live there. We decided to get up at dawn and go back then, hopefully it will be quieter and a much better experience right?
      Got to bed early and set the alarm for 5:30am… Will I actually get up?      Leggi altro

      Today did not disappoint! We went to the Mont-Saint-Michel, which is a magical island topped by a gravity-defying abbey. It is considered one of France’s most stunning sights. For centuries it had been one of Europe’s major pilgrimage destinations is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

      Mont Saint Michel

      Thommy muss drei Tage ein paar Sachen erledigen und ich nutze die Zeit, um Frankreichs vielleicht größte kulturelle Attraktion zu besuchen: den Mont Saint Michel
      Schon von Weitem prägt die wunderschöne Erhöhung die ansonsten flache Landschaft (vom Auto aus).
      Ein Kloster/ Burg gebaut auf eine recht hohe Granitinsel, nie erobert.
      Eine der großen architektonischen Meisterleistungen Frankreichs, unglaublich verwinkelt und schön.
      Wermutstropfen sind die vielen Menschen, die dieses Monument besuchen und die schlechte Anbindung dort hin zu kommen.
      Es hat sich aber mehr als gelohnt :)      Leggi altro

      Baie du Mont Saint-Michel - 30km

      C’est notre jour de pause ! Nous logeons dans une belle maison d’hôtes à 7km du Mont Saint-Michel, lit confortable et surtout un super petit déjeuner avec des crêpes et des confitures faites maison.
      Dès le matin, direction le Mont Saint-Michel pour éviter d’avoir trop de monde lors de la visite de l’abbaye. Nous avons de la chance, le temps est radieux et nous pouvons accéder directement au Mont à vélo.
      Nous gravissons les ruelles charmantes mais remplies de boutiques à touristes pour arriver jusqu’à l’abbaye. Nous visitons ce lieu spectaculaire construit avant l’an 1000 par les chrétiens et assiégé pendant plusieurs dizaines d’années lors de la guerre de 100 ans. Il y a peu de mobilier mais le bâtiment est impressionnant et les vues sur la baie époustouflantes.
      Pas de chance toutefois, nous allons rater la grande marée qui aura lieue le lendemain : c’est le moment où le Mont est entouré d’eau et cela se passe de rares fois par an.
      L’après-midi est plus calme, nous emmenons les vélos au car wash pour les laver et les entretenons l’après-midi pour mieux repartir le lendemain.
      Le soir on profite quand même de notre première crêperie avec du cidre breton (car oui le mont Saint Michel est en Normandie mais nous logeons en Bretagne).      Leggi altro

      Le Mont-Saint-Michel

      After the Eiffel Tower, Le Mont-Saint-Michel has to be one of France’s most recognised, and visited, sites. It stands a kilometre off shore in the tidal estuary of the Couesnon river. A causeway wasn’t built until the 1800’s.
      It is built on a small rocky island - apparently after the archangel Michel appeared to the Bishop of the neighbouring city in a dream in 708 (His skull remains in the nearby cathedral with a hole in it where the angel touched it! True!). What began as a sanctuary for pilgrims became a Benedictine abbey in the 10th C - by the 14th C it grew to occupy the entire island (and double it’s height). It became an impregnable stronghold in the Hundred Years war but after the French Revolution it was sacked and turned into a prison which remained until 1863 when Napoleon III restored it to a national monument and restoration has continued to this day.
      As you approach the tidal flats it suddenly appears like a mirage from a fantasy RPG computer game - it takes your breath away even though you’ve seen pictures of it before.
      The tide was going out when we arrived so the muddy quicksand was visible all around. The Abbey is enormous built on three levels with multiple halls,chapels and crypts but no decorations as they were removed by the revolutionaries. A very informative audio guide provided a fascinating walk through for several hours.
      We lucked upon a mass in progress in the main church with nuns singing - see videos. As always it’s difficult to show the magnitude and magnificence of such a structure in photos but I tried.      Leggi altro

      Welcome to St Malo. We are on an 8 hour optional Viking excursion to visit Mont-Saint-Michele Abbey.
      The Mont-Saint-Michel monks, during the first century of their institution, (around 710) venerated the archangel Michael. The Mont became a place of prayer and study, but the stability period, known as the Neustria, during the reign of Charlemagne ended when he died. As the rest of Gaule was fighting invasions, religion and science found some welcoming in the diocese of Avranches and at the Mont-Saint-Michel.
      When Richard 1st, son of William 1st, became duke of Normandy, he tried using his authority to return them to a more monastic life. After failing to do so, and with the approbation of pope John XIII and king Lothair, he decided to replace them with a monastery of the Benedict order, as mentioned in Introductio monachorum ("the installation of the monks"), a treaty written around 1080–1095 by a Mont-Saint-Michel monk trying to defend the independence of the monastery toward the state.
      In World War II, the abbey and its surrounding area came under German occupation starting on June 20, 1940. A cable car facility was installed but the abbey was otherwise kept intact, with the German Armistice Commission recognizing Mont-Saint-Michel's historical significance. During the German retreat after D-Day in 1944, no attempt was made to defend the area, which was clear by July 31.
      Mont Saint Michel as a whole and its bay were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979, and it was listed with criteria such as cultural, historical, and architectural significance, as well as human-created and natural beauty.
      It was beyond beautiful. The climb to the top was extremely strenuous and the elevation again tells how out of shape we are, but we made it. We walked the hilly streets through the shops and stopped for beers and cheese with Tom and Tammy before Tammy and Diana discovered a very small Church with great views.
      We had a late lunch at St Pierre restaurant and the wine flowed freely. Back to the bus and back to the ship. We attend our ship’s church service at 6:00.
      Myron performed tonight with the Viking Guest Choir. It was the farewell show with all the singers and a big thank you to the crew.
      Our trip is winding down but we do have a few more ports first.      Leggi altro
