      Salzburg and Berchtesgaden

      13. mai 2023, Tyskland ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

After seeing the forecast, I set aside a few days to see the sights and do the things in and around Salzburg. I found a campsite in close proximity to two attractions. The campsite itself had a sauna, so I was more than happy to stay a couple rainy nights in a tent there. First the salt mines tour which was a highlight, from deep salty lakes to slides in a miner’s onesy. Next was the Eagles Nest. A specially equipped bus took me up to Hitlers mansion? Fortress? Castle? At roughly 6000 feet. Well worth the trip to get some cloudy views and a glance into the past. I can only imagine what it might look like on a clear day!Les mer

      Day trip to Germany!

      13. juni 2022, Tyskland ⋅ 🌧 63 °F

      Miles: 6.97 Steps: 16137
      Flights stairs: 17

We took a day trip out to an underground salt mine (Berchtesgaden Salt Mine) in the alps. We ended up actually crossing into Germany! It was fascinating taking the trip 165 meters underground to see how they mined in the past and are mining currently. It was also a new experience to be the only two English speaking people in the tour of 50! We had translating devices for the produced information, but when the guide spoke he did so in German, and then would run over to us and repeat himself in English. A few times before he did that, he would say something and the whole crowd would crack up laughing - we may have been unknowingly the butt of a joke or two.

In the evening we went up to Hohensalzburg Fortress. It was first built in 357 AD - and was altered and expanded on for hundreds of years. It also has the distinction of being a fortress that in all of history had never been conquered. Reaching it in the funicular you could see why - it was on such sheer cliffs and so high. During one battle the enemy had them pinned down for so long they almost ran out of food - they were down to a single cow. So they would paint the cow nightly different colors and parade it the next day where the enemy could see. They were fooled into thinking they had more food then they actually did, and gave up the fight and left.

I learned today that in WW2 over 46% of Salzburg was destroyed - coming from the US where modern wars haven’t been fought on our soil it’s hard to imagine losing so much.

      Flachau

      Day 129: Salzburg Salt Mines

      18. mai, Østerrike ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Unbelievably fun day touring the Hallein Salt Mine at Dürnnberg. Salinen Austria AG, the only remaining salt producer in Austria, runs 90 minute tours in the mines. We put on protective gear and watched an informative video on salt mining practices that started in early Stone Ages, improved to brine water lake mining in Enlightenment, and now modern practices with water pumps/tubes. The mines are still active today.

You ride a log cart deep into the mountain and are able to see modern equipment and the older methods including a salt brine lake. We got to taste the salty water which had 27% salinity (more than 6 times the ocean). We also saw aging whisky barrels for an “experiment” and could see salt crystallizing on the walls, wood, and rails.

Following the salt tour, we trained to Vienna, grabbed dinner, and prepared for a night out. It was finally time to hit proper European night clubs. We started at O der Club which didn’t open until 11PM. We were chilling on the couches in a hip hop dance room when an Austrian man sits down and asks if he can smoke. He invites his friends and it immediately turns into a party, but also drama between husbands, friends, and us just rolling with the events. He buys bottle service for our table and we eventually hideaway to other dance floors with disco and house.

After awhile, we decide it’s time to depart from this friend group and try to find more EDM style clubs. We metro at 2am to a club called Das Work and mistakenly walk into a different club called Grelle Forelle. Here they played DnB and techno; we dance for two hours before grabbing a kebab and walking 26 minutes home at 4am.

Eagles nest and dinner - Westin & Marina

      10. august 2023, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

We headed out to Eagle's nest since we had most of the day free. Eagle's Nest sits atop the Obersalzberg mountains in one of the most beautiful parts of Bavaria, overlooking the small town of Berchtesgaden. Unfortunately, there was some weather that day and the tops of the German Alps were partly covered in clouds. They would clear briefly and peak through. We found that this is a very popular site & was quite crowded. You buy a bus ticket and they take you up the mountain and drop you off where you walk through a long underground tunnel to an elevator used by the Nazi staff. The elevator takes you up into the Eagle's nest which was Hitler's mountain retreat. Adolf Hitler didn't really spend too much time there, but he did meet with other heads of state from other countries there.
After our tour of Eagles Nest, we headed back to have dinner with other family and close friends that had arrived and we all met up at Westin and Marinas home about 45 minutes from the place we stayed in Unterneukirchin. They have 6 bee hives and they are growing their own veges! The honey is the best I've ever tasted.

      Eagle's Nest

      12. oktober 2017, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

After we finished our toboggan run, we took a short 15 minute drive to the car park at the base of Eagle's Nest. In a highly efficient operation (we are in Germany after all), we were on one of many specially designed buses which can manage the narrow road going up. Once we get up, you then walk through a 124 metre tunnel, to get in a brass lift to go up 124 metres, which pops you out right inside Kehlsteinhaus. It has been operated as a restaurant since the 1930s, with all proceeds from the leasing and tourism venture going to charity.

The views across the Alps are incredible. The sun terrace where many of the famous photographs of Hitler and Braun were taken is now simply a corridor to another part of the restaurant, with information panels and archival photographs in place. This is the only reference to the Nazi Party that we saw at the actual site.

We ate lunch out on the terrace with splendid views. I admit though I was surprised as I had more of an idea of it having a large grassed slope behind it, but perhaps I am just mixing up various archival footage in my mind.

      Kehlsteinhaus

      24. september 2016, Tyskland ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C
