      Dresden Day 1

      September 25, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 7 °C

The train journey from Decin to Dresden was very picturesque. We passed farms, orchards, vineyards, small towns with towering church spires and more rock formations.

Albertinum was our first gallery visit.
We had an excellent guided tour by a lovely man who said that there were no English tours, only German but because there were only us and one other also very nice lady who could understand English, he did the tour in English.

The Albertinum was an artillery storage that is now an art gallery for the works from late 1800 till now. It maps the change in styles from the early romanticism, impressionism expressionism, new objectivity to contemporary.

The guide pointed out some poignant parts of history that explained some of the works and made me aware that what I thought was blurred photos hanging as art were actually paintings done by Gerhard Richter. He also pointed out a tryptic done be Otto Dix titled The War that was symbolised the crucifixion without the resurrection. Very interesting gallery.

Next stop was a free concert at the Church of the Holy Cross. It was a concert that was both moving and professional. It was the 9 th interfaith peace concert.
There was an orchestra, a large choir and some soloist with mandolin, erhu, violin and clarinet.
There was some classical pieces, some Hebrew, Sufi, and a medley at the end with what sounded like a call to prayer, then finishing with Hebrew and Christian lyrics.

It was moving because it was lovely to see the religious tolerance displayed when a Jewish man conducted the Sufi and both Jewish and Muslim were the presenters. We think the concert was to promote religious harmony across all faith.

Our last stop was a lovely candlelit pub just a little away from aldsatdt that served really good marinated local fish in cream sauce and garlic pasta.

Total walk for the day was 14.2 km

      Dresden Day 2

      September 25, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Today we joined a walking tour that gave a little history in the time of Augustus the Strong, through to the GDR until current day restoration. The guide also elaborated on the destructions caused by the allied forces bombing of Dresden and what and how the buildings have been restored.

After the tour, we visited the Historical Green Vault to look at Augustus the Strong's collection of jewellery, furniture, and what he had on exhibition in the 1700.

We came back to the accommodation after being bedazzled by the exhibition and amazed at the historical sights around Dresden.

      Total walking distance 13.1 km

      Dresden - klassisch

      October 4, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Dresden Day 3 Old Masters

      September 26, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Today we started the day at the Zwinger art gallery of the Old Masters. We were there for 4 hours and could have been even longer if not for the organ recital that we had planned to go at 3pm. It was just a free 15 minute church pipe organ recital, and the beautiful sounds lulled Ruby and I to a restful nap.
The gallery was well laid out in sequences of periods of painters with an audio guide. Despite the 4 hours there, we had to still rush through the Flemish and Dutch Masters.

Included in our ticket was the visit to the porcelain and mathematics galleries. King Augustus the Strong was a great collector, he loved art, porcelain and clocks, globes, instruments and machines. We came back to the porcelain and mathematics galleries after the organ recital. The porcelain collection was interesting but the clocks and time pieces were truly beautiful.

The day was finished with a meal at Schmidt's, a Michelin star restaurant deep in the suburbs of Dresden, a half hour tram ride away. The food was divine, exquisite and most of all filling. As we had to do laundry, we were already late for our reservation when we got off the tram. We still had a 950m walk to the restaurant. We weren't sure if where Google was taking us so we asked a lady standing at the front of her house saying goodbye to someone. She seemed so helpful and welcomed us straight away into her home. This we thought to mean a short cut out the back of her house. Instead, she enthusiastically beckoned us to come in to see her Chinese antiques, which we gleaned was a collection that her father left her. Then we got the story of how her father went to China and became a professor of music there during GDR, whilst China was under Mao, and Dresden was part of East Germany. She then proceeded to take us down her street with her front door still slightly ajar, to show us the directions to Schmidt's. On the way she wanted us to see her "drawing" gallery and gestured pointing to her watch. We said sorry, but we were late for our reservation already pointing back to our watches. It was really opportune meeting her because she lead us to a short cut. We were almost half an hour late, but it table was still waiting for us. We call people like her our travel angels.

      Total distance walked 10.2km.

      Dresden, Germany (Days 1 & 2)

      October 11, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

      What we did:
      - Took what was supposed to be a 2:30-5pm train from Prague. The train was delayed leaving 30 mins later and then we actually sat for 45 mins or so at the Czech/German border. Cops boarded the train and took multiple guys off the train that were traveling alone, without a passport and appeared of middle eastern descent. Per research, Germany is having issues with all the migrants they took in and are really starting to crack down. A similar thing happened when we crossed from Italy into France.
      - We were tired so just grabbed a quick dinner, checked into the hotel and passed out early.
      - Woke up and took a 45 minute train to the “Saxon-Switzerland” national park, which is actually just a national park in Germany. No idea how they landed on that wildly confusing name! Consistently rated a top 5 national park in Europe, we enjoyed the two-three hour hike through the forests and intricate rock formations. The “Bastei Bridge” is a frequent photo cycled through our Windows laptop screensavers. Definitely worth coming!
      - After the hike we tried to find food at 6 different restaurants in the area, which were all closed or surprisingly very unfriendly to foreign tourists. One entirely ignored us. From Google reviews it seems that all the restaurants in this area essentially refuses foreigners and sometimes get openly hostile. WTF Germany
      - There is a barge that gets you across the 50ft wide river from the train station to the park. They pack it full to its max capacity of 320 people. There is no other way to describe it than this barge is a janky contraption. It has no motor and instead is just tied to a buoy in the river and they use some sort of pulley system with the river flow to move it across. Coming over it was only a 5minute experience, but on the way home they packed all 300+ of us onto it and made us sit there for almost an hour. People were losing it! Almost 80 degree heat in tight quarters - there were some elderly people really starting to struggle. I guess we had to wait for a window in which there were no boats or kayakers anywhere in sight before this floating piece of sh*t could cross. Build a damn bridge Germany! This Huckleberry Finn schtick isn’t cutting it. Starting to really question the “German Enginering” touted in the Volkswagon car commercials now.
      - We got back to Dresden and walked around Old Town and the river. Super cool and underrated city! The palace and old buildings are gorgeous and don’t have the tourist chaos of other areas. We grabbed beers at the “Augustusgarten” riverside biergarten.
      - Grabbed some dinner and headed back to the hotel by 10. Watched the 1st episode of the Netflix Beckham documentary on David and Victoria - definitely recommend!

      Where we ate -
      - Dinner of Poke at Hawaiin restaurant M’oolea. Delicious!
      - Train station coffees and croissants for breakfast. Trent ate a pretzel because hey we’re in Germany after all
      - Lunch at KFC. Yes that KFC - Colonel Sanders is a luxury food item over here.
      - Trent had 1st dinner of a pretzel and brat at biergarten. Brat was delicious and gave us faith in German brats again after the clunkers in Munich. Steph opted out of 1st dinner
      - 2nd dinner of Pho at a local Vietnamese place! Not as traditional as Salzburg but good enough for what we needed.

      Fun Facts -
      - Dresden was the old capitalist of Saxony and is surprisingly full of gorgeous old churches and impressive Palace items.
      - Dresden was basically leveled by the UK/US at the end of WW2. There were actually inquisitions for many years after to determine if they acted incorrectly in doing so as the war was nearly over and there were substantial civilian casualties from the resulting fires. Almost all of those old churches/palaces were damaged/destroyed and had to be refurbished/rebuilt afterwards to try and keep the old town vibes. To the untrained eye you couldn’t tell that they were not naturally so old.

    • Day 28

      Dresden

      August 9, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

A day trip to Dresden today. We caught an early train for the hour journey, arriving in a relatively quiet Dresden, as we would later become aware. The Old Town was extensively damaged in WWII bombing but has been amazingly restored. We first passed the Frauenkirche, which was restored using as many old bricks in their original location as possible. This led to a patchwork of blackened and bright bricks. Up on the Brühl's terrace, you can see the ministeries of state across the Elbe. The Fürstenzug (Parade of Princes) was very quiet and we had this 100m mural of all of the rulers of Saxony almost to ourselves.

The Theatreplatz was a little busier as the day woke up. It is surrounded by the castle, opera house and Zwinger, all gothic-restored buildings. Over the bridge across the Elbe was the Golden Rider, a golden statue of Fredrich August I. The whole old town is just a lovely place to walk around. Save for a few continuing restoration works however, there was little mention of the impact of the bombing of Dresden, which was odd given the other German towns and their determination to discuss history.

Back at the Frauenkirche, we grabbed some lunch and a beer, and discussed the plans for tomorrow. Walking back to the station, the town was far busier than when we arrived!

We visited an absolutely SUPERB museum back in Leipzig about the DDR 1945-present day. We spent over two hours there before it closed and it absolutely wasn't long enough (I got to 1985 before the 15 minute closing warning!). One of the absolutely best museums we've visited.
