      Leipzig

      4 oktober 2023, Duitsland ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Today was our first day with Rainer, our nephew, and his wife Olivia. We drove 2 hours from their apt. and spent the day in Leipzig. Leipzig was part of the former East Germany. I learned a lot about what life in the former East Germany was like and also about the uprisings that caused the wall to fall and the reunification of Germany.
The first pic is of the 4 of us in Leipzig. Pic 2, a painting on the side of a building expressed the frustration of the people. Some of the sayings: “we are the people” “freedom” “free elections” “freedom of the press” “ the wall has to go” “democracy”. (Unfortunately my pics are a little out of order..) Pic 7 is of Nikolai Kirche and pic 3 is the inside of the church. It all started at this church with prayers for freedom on Mondays at 5pm. That evolved into peaceful demonstrations in the streets of Leipzig that lead to the fall of East Germany. Stepping out of that church and walking along the streets suddenly took on new meaning today after I read the history of what had happened here.
Pics 4,5 & 6 are some of the buildings in the city.
Pic 8 is the university library and pic 9 is the “assembly hall and university church of St Paul” that is attached to the library.
The East Germans demolished the church in 1968. The church was rebuilt after the reunification but is now used sometimes as a church and sometimes as a lecture hall.
The last pic shows the contrast between the plain, functional architecture of the East German era and the historic building in background. We visited an exhibit titled East Germany: 1945 to the Reunification. Such an eye opening, thought provoking exhibit.

Highlight of the day: learning the history of Nikolai Kirche, Leipzig and East Germany

      RB Leipzig!

      1 april 2023, Duitsland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

      RB Leipzig!

Since the World Cup, the boys have been pretty obsessed with football. A premier match in Europe was a must. To afford tickets to a Chelsea game in London would have required us selling one of the boys, so the Bundesliga was a great option.

We managed to get some great tickets to a match in Leipzig, which is about an hours' train ride from Berlin. The atmosphere as you walk from the train station to any sporting event is exciting, and this was no exception.

Jack's spending money was burning a hole in his pocket, and he knew from the outset that his adopted team, RBL would be one place he'd spend it. A quick stop at the merchandise store and we looked like we'd be RBL fans for life. We then made our way into the 50,000 seat stadium and soaked up the chants, songs and pre-game hype.

The game, while high quality and exciting, did not go as planned for the home side. Mainz, the visiting underdog, got the job done with a goal in the first half, and two more by full time. A 3-0 defeat was not ideal, but the experience for the Bilkeys was fantastic. As always, purely for research, we needed to test out the food and beverage offerings and were not disappointed. The Wurst hotdogs were the best, and the beers were excellent. I needed a few to make sure. I can now confidently order 1, 2 or 3 of something from a menu. As I don't know the numbers 4, 5 or 6, it forces us to diversify in what we order...

On our walk back to the train station, Fred was pretty pleased to see that Germany accommodates for Fred sized people with their own doors. Either that or there are elves living in many of the buildings.

After a long day, the train ride home was pretty quiet, and as I'm sure we'll discover more and more, anywhere is a good place to have a nap.

      Zoo Leipzig

      18 mei, Duitsland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

      Football games

      Vandaag, Duitsland ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We have been to several football games so far:
      - Denmark v Slovenia in Stuttgart. An entertaining 1-1 draw in an impressive stadium (pics 1 and 2)
      - Spain v Italy in Gelsenkirchen. 1-0 to Spain. Italy offered little going forward. We had front-row seats however and appeared on TV! (Pics 3-5)
      - Germany v Hungary in Stuttgart. 2-0 to Germany. The hosts were expected to win this and did. I did not go to this one, just the others did.
      - France v Nederlands in Leipzig. 0-0. We were most excited for this game but, unfortunately, star player Kylian Mbappe picked up an injury in the previous game and was out. The atmosphere was great but the result less so. Our tickets were split up so I watched the first half from the Dutch end on my own (pic 6-7). Joe found me a space in the French end for the second half, so I moved there (Pic 8)

We have covered 1,800km in 6 days. We now have 4 days of camping in Leipzig. Everyone is glad for a rest.

      Day 22

      17 juni, Duitsland ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Even though I don’t have any plans in the mornings, I still keep waking early which is somewhat frustrating! I spent some time in my apartment typing up this blog before meeting Roman and his family in the main house for breakfast. Today I had plans to meet my friend Luise in Leipzig, so I had an easy 15 minute walk to the train station. Since the supermarkets weren’t open yesterday, I stopped there on the way to get some food and water before catching my train.

Since arriving in Germany, my 5G hasn’t been working which has caused a deal of frustration, but fortunately there was wifi on the train to Leipzig. After a quick connection at Südkreuz station, the train journey was about one and a half hours. One thing I noticed at the station was how I was the only person wearing shorts so maybe I stood out as a tourist.

Upon arrival in Leipzig, Luise met me at the station and it was so good to see her again after 7 years. Similarly, I haven’t been to Leipzig since 1997 so I’m pretty sure it has changed since then. Luise admitted she wasn’t a very good tour guide as she was unsure about most landmarks in Leipzig, but I didn’t mind since it was nice just to walk around the city.

We first went to a Konditerei for coffee and cake, which is one of my favourite activities in Germany. When Luise said she would like to take me to the zoo, I was somewhat confused as a zoo isn’t always the most common attraction. After spending the day there, I could totally understand - the zoo is amazing! The aquarium included a lot of tropical fish from the north of Australia, and the zoo itself even had koalas and kangaroos (although I only saw the latter) - so I felt like a part of home was there with me.

We had lunch in an outdoor restaurant at the zoo, where you could see some of the Patagonian Mara nearby. One of the highlights of the zoo was Gondwanaland, which was an enormous dome containing a huge rainforest, complete with a boat cruise and treetop suspension bridges. One interesting thing was how the three toed sloths have escaped from their enclosure, and could sometimes be seen hanging from the beams up on the roof of the dome.

Luise recommended a cafe in the zoo where we could have coffee and cake and, just like our lunch venue, there was plenty of animal spotting as giraffes and ostriches walked past while we enjoyed our cheesecake and coffee. Luise accompanied me back to the train station late afternoon, so we bid each other farewell until we meet next time.

The train back was just as quick as the morning one but, since I had taken so many photos at the zoo, my phone battery was almost dead. Upon arrival back at Teltow Stadt, I chose the wrong exit and after walking for a while, realised nothing looked familiar. I opened a map back to Roman’s house on my iPhone and quickly read the names of the streets where I’d need to turn before the phone died completely. Thank God I got back okay! Otherwise I would’ve been wandering the streets of Teltow clueless.

That night I had dinner with Roman and his family again, but I have offered to buy dinner tomorrow night since I haven’t contributed anything since my visit! Roman and Steffi thought sushi sounded like a good idea. Tomorrow I’ll be visiting my cousin Simone who has lived in Berlin for about 10 years as an an opera singer.

      kolossales Leipzig

      16 september 2023, Duitsland ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

      🌍Weida - Gera - Zeitz - Leipzig
      📈83km, 550Hm
